Edge detection is as great as ever. Really impressed

Only use it for a quick blast earlier but even from just a few early shots i am impressed, it is noticeably better than my Oneplus 7t.

Honestly no difference with my wife's pixel 4.
Bit nicer than my pixel 3xl

The minimum focus distance isn't suitable for macro, all you can do is crop the original image to get a macro'ish type of shot

1st picture taken in portrait mode, find it amazing!

Can someone please give me a heads-up with the camera settings. I'm new to pixel phones.
With regards to the ratio, would 4:3 be more optimum for portrait shots and when taking landscape shots I should switch to 16:9?
Can these also be pre-set or do I have to change it each time?
Is the leveling bar just informing you of how level your lens angle is, and when it hits "0", you are good to go?
thanks and forgive my noobery.

16:9 will be a cropped version of 4:3. If you want to manually crop the photos (because you have time for it) then I recommend 4:3.
Just remember where did you focused.
Personally for close ups I switch to 4:3 and for every day usage I go with 16:9.

Quite like it

Quality
Loving the look of the google processing

Liking the camera
Will do more camera testing next week

The HDR and HDR+ controls need to make a comeback though, some photos just look over processed rather than natural. More often that not though it nails it.

Did anyone noticed that ultra wide lens can't fous near area?
One example. I set focus point on green led (edge of monitor) but there is focus on back wall ...

The ultra wide doesn't have AF, it is a fixed focus lens and your monitor was just too close to be in focus.

Selfie cam terrible
I just got my Pixel 5 today here in the US. I have to say, in comparison to my Pixel 3 XL this selfie camera is terrible! Images seem blurry. I even stood in front of a window and turned on additional lighting. How have none of the reviewers noticed this?? Is this limited to my phone?

Quite impressed with low light performance. Took this at the weekend at the back on a dark cinema whilst waiting for the trailers to start. Auto mode, no flash, no editing.

Wow, that looks amazing. I just got the Note 8 too but I haven't had a chance to do low-light yet.
By far, the best camera I've ever owned.
Just need to find a big-ass spider so I can post some examples.

I'm aware that during low light the images will appear grainy or noisy, but I can see the grain even in medium light condition. Image is set at 4.3 ratio highest bit rate for pics.

How about wide color
So, what is the use of a wide color gamut capable display if the camera still shoots sRGB jpg?! I have not found any info on the color space profile of Note 8 jpegs and videos, can anyone chime in?

Google photos auto
Now, this is by far not the best *quality* photos, but it does show off the functionality quite well. I took this photo of a room in my apartment with absolutely no lights on other than some light leaking into the hallway behind me from a neighboring room, and a pure red heat lamp for a tank (pictured). I went full manual, mounted the camera with some objects on a table, and set it to a 10 second shutter, thinking that I wouldn't be able to pull off holding it by hand. Then I held it by hand. These are the two photos I got (one braced on a table, one by hand) with a 10 second shutter in a DARK room (the braced one is zoomed in).
Here's a shot of that same room from out in the hallway where there's a little light (so you can see about how dark it is).
What happened to the scalable function between 0-100% when using photo filters like Vignette and Stardust etfc? Gone?

Mine to even in really good lighting, using highest resolution.
Few observations after a month of use:
Picture quality overall is great, however the stock app tends to overblow the highlights in high contrast scenes. This is the effect of the small sensor size and it's prominent on all cellphones, however both Pixel 2 and iPhone X I've tested don't have that issue. However, installing and using the Google camera port helps the issue dramatically, so it's the HDR algorithm employed in the stock app, not the actual sensor.
Stock camera app is, however, both faster and more reliable in terms of snapping every day photos. Furthermore stock app has marginally less noise than Google Camera, but it also captures marginally less details. Stock camera also has less saturation and sharper gradients than Google Camera, likely a product of the algorithm as well.
The telephoto camera is decidedly worse than the wide angle one, even in bright light. You're trading off the dynamic range for zoom, and it's not just the difference in the lenses.
Lightroom HDR raw files (40mb 3.2MP image that contains 10 bit of colour) are mind-blowing. As an owner of full-frame Canon 6D I was blown away by the colour retention in Lightroom Camera app. On a DSLR you'd absolutely have to use bracketing to get those colours (although you'd get a 20 MP image), it's very impressive that a cellphone can do that. If only it shot out a 12 MP raw file.
Overall Note 8 has a very versatile camera with awesome picture quality, but certain scenes require he use of Google Camera for HDR+ algorithm to get the best results.

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the LG V30's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

I am coming from a Pixel 1 which had an excellant camera and so far I have not been let down at all. I wanted the manual controls and was pissed when the Pixel wouldn't let me keep the shutter open for more than a second, the v30 allows up to 30 seconds!!!
Here are some pictures I took tonight while at kings island. All the pictures were MUCH darker than what they look like here:

Most of the pictures show both the normal and wide camera. The ones on the table outside were at 9pm EST. It was pretty much pitch black out. And that's only at 20 second shutter speed. The garage shot is in complete darkness. The shots of Kings Island were on Auto

Pretty good 20 sec considering iso was at 800 but since aperture is 1.6 it's way to much light . I would lower iso to 50 and you could get away with even 10 sec exposure and cleaner photo . As for auto settings I only use it in broad day light . Once it gets dark you have to play with manual . It irritates me that people use auto mode at night and then complain how bad photos are . I don't care how much you paid for your camera ( Almost ) all cameras make bad decisions at night in auto mode .
I assume a tripod is mandatory with those extended shutter speeds. DIdnt even know this could be done on a phone. Nice!
I currently have the V20 and I am looking to upgrade to the V30, depending on how much the camera has improved. Manual mode which I love, is how I shoot all my shot. A tripod is required for even more than a second of shutter speeds. This was shot using the V20 with a stutter speed of 30 sec and a ND filter with a tripod.
Just took this low light photo at 1030 at night. You can easily see the Pleiades Cluster of stars right above the trees. 30 Second Shutter, 100 ISO (I believe, it might have been 50)
After doing some research I found out you can even see Andromeda Galaxy near the top center of the photo, it's the "blurry star"

That's pretty.... stellar! I couldn't help it. But really, that's amazing for coming from a cellphone camera. I'll have to give it a try. I have a photo idea on tap that needed a night sky shot. I was going to do it with a larger camera but I will have to try it with the phone so that I can have an all in phone shot.
So far, I've been extremely impressed with the main camera in low light most of the time. Once in a while there's a little bobble here and there but overall, really good stuff. I was able to shoot with it in an area I normally test larger cameras. The wide angle is far better than that on the V20. I even shot one shot in the museum that I later used for a composite. The V20 was a pretty good photo tool but the V30 is looking to be much better! I've already got a handful of shots with it that I really like.

The way I achieved it was the way most people with DSLR takes night photos. I had it propped up (Don't ever hand hold star photos) and took 7 pictures. I then used the free windows program Sequator which stacks the photos and compares the differences between the photos to remove noise. It only takes about 20 seconds to do it. Then WALA. The final picture came out about 22 meg in size and looked amazing. I want to go out to a place with less light bleed from the environment to take some but it might be a while

I might be able to test that tonight I'm heading into Joshua Tree to check out the meteor shower. I'll be doing most of my shooting on my DSLR but I'll grab a couple from the v30 as well. I don't have a cell phone tripod but I'll just lean it up against something.
I'll test both cameras. I'm expecting slightly better results from the wide angle than main camera just because the shorter focal length will allow for longer exposure without star trailing. but that f1.6 would let it some pretty decent light too. I'll try and update when I can with results, sometime this weekend!

Here's my V30 photos on Flickr so far:

EXIF info is open for viewing for each shot. Anything shot in the museum or a performance setting is low light. (There is a "duplicate" which is a concept I was working on with one rough three minute job and the other a little more worked over.)
can somebody do a camera comparison with note8 and google pixel 2 xl? I want to buy v30 but not sure if camera is good enough
@CHH2 thx @serhiopinkoli I'm also wondering **** one to those of those two. I heard that camera sensor is really little in v30 and pixel aren't big that could be complicated in LL conditions. Sometimes can get his shot, sometimes not - depend on scene and software correction, that's how I thing. It's more sure to get more with bidet pixels in sensor and better software, but less mpix rich is also not to good now I've got 19 mpix with pixel size as v30 has about 1,12 and in the dark outs terrible also because of poor software and dark camera glass f=2.0. But I like it with good light conditions . Shots has far more details than note 8. So this 16 mpix in v30 really make me confused, if note had some more mpix it wasn't even a question.
That's why I also wanted some real live pictures. It was the best to get comparison.

I was really worried about the smaller sensor also. So I was able to reach out to a contact at T-Mobile to arrange a no restocking fee purchase so I could test it out and if I didn't like it, return it. I was really worried it would be worse than the V20. Well, I'm keeping it. It's better than the V20. I still get a weird photo once in a while but a very large majority of the time, I'm really surprised at how well the V30 does. You won't be doing action shots at night. That's just not the realm of cellphones, that's why there are still massive DSLRs. I still have quite a bit of testing to do. I still want to shot a low light portrait as I'm looking for a certain characteristic that I've had to give up on DSLRs for smaller sensors still have.
@ CHH2,
WOW! Those V30 shots you have on Flickr are great. That pretty much put me in the 'Should I get the V30 camp", LOL, it seems a lot of people dont realize that LG offers a boat-load of camera options to use. I have looking around and wondering what cell phone to get and I love how the LG 30 looks as I dont really care for the Sammy thinner style at all. SO after seeing a lot of pros and negs reviews about the V30 I'm sure glad I saw your V30 photos, plus you know how to set up a camera so that helps too.
Finally on Oreo on yesterday, and while the camera was already good for low light, the new Bright Mode does an excellent job (IMO) - for those who do not want to fiddle around with Manual mode. Pretty much surprised, that a smaller sensor (than the competition), can pull off good low light pictures.
http://drtechnno.com/2018/05/10/lg-...e-camera-and-lg-v30-camera-app-in-oreo-build/
See my comparison with the Google camera app in Oreo. Hope it helps someone.

Really sucks!
Santa Monica pier from 300+ yards away you can leave your own thoughts. Mind you hand held no tripod or anything. Yes 100% daytime photos are better but still for what it is. Amazing. 2nd shot is using the pop out feature that I love.
Please note the 4 lane freeway sign is even decently clear.

Regardless of optical material, improved aperture, or better controls and software modes... The camera on this phone is terrible for this price point. Side by side, my LG G4 and LG G5 performs comparably (and even favorably) in most, if not all, conditions compared to the V30. The front face ING camera is especially terrible.
I really WANT to love this phone, but the terrible camera is INEXCUSABLE. My wife's Note 8 and my LG G5 (another hunk of junk that had a terrible screen and a body that destroys itself with the battery door under normal usage) both have better camera's than this thing, SPECIFICATIONS BE DAMNED.

Ive compared the pictures. Honestly, i see the distorition on XZ1 but i also see in Samsung too.
The only pic that is ridiculous for the XZ1 is the one of the wall. But the other ones are pretty much the same distortion... there are pics that the angle are also pretty much different comparing to samsung.

Wow, it looks pretty bad for XZ1. Even my Z1 and Z3 Compact have less distortion, especially on grass and trees.
Can anyone post some sample daylight shots at different ISO just to compare ISO performance.
I personally don't care about low light since low light is something you (at least pro users) never shoot in auto mode since you want to shoot in lower ISO to reduce noise. Which xperia camera fails to do with lack of OIS. Since it cannot lower shutter speed to compensate for low ISO.
I am impressed with the low-light performance of the camera in the XZ1. These shots was though snaped in Auto Mode.
What do you think?

No distortion and very good photo quality in any situations.
I don't know if people know how to take a photo?
I do not accept that xz1 gives bad photos from people who shoot photos and videos with their phone vertical!
Very nice pictures yours! I bought xz1 on Amazon and when it arrived to me I was so happy...but, after a week, I gave it back! Why? Camera quality. I didn't believe my eyes, in certain light conditions, no way to take a decent picture, nor in automatic neither in manual mode. Still now, it seems impossible to me, and I'm thinking that it was a faulty device... Should I buy another one, giving to xz1 a second chance?
P.S. it seemed that HDR wasn't working at all! For example, taking a picture of a white wall on a green grass, the wall was burned and the grass nearly black...with all my other smartphones, the picture taken was nice
Nice pictures from your shared album.
Are you willing to share camera settings? Thanks in advance.
Hello my friend, today I see your question.
I have disabled the object track to let me make photometry with tap.
Then I use the burst mode every time.
For example on low light I set 1/4 shutter I shoot many photos in burst mode so I can have one or two unshaked photos.
For hdr I use very often camera mx with hdr on .
I think that the key is the burst mode.
Day or night with people or not I shoot burst.
for amazing reasults on static themes try camera super pixel and offcourse a little edit after ,just for hight lights and shadows .
Camera super pixel is amazing!!!!

I came from the pixel 2xl and I agree, pixel camera is so much better, especially portrait ones.
My Opinion, coming from a oneplus 3T, There's just a huge photo quality overhaul, but I can compare it to a Huawei P20 Pro, and there's just a great difference on image sharpness and color saturation, Huawei pictures appear much more clear and better colored and detail defined. None the less, excellent photos for the casual photographer.
All of my photos are a litte bit blurred... What can i do? What are the best settings for the camera?

I have this problem with face/portrait photos. Looks like there is some heavy image processing when a face is detected. Gcam photos have lots more detail of the face....

did anyone noticed that when shooting in "auto mode", if you press the 2X, the phone doesn't use the telephoto? it's just a 2x zoom from the wide camera.
You can test that covering the telephoto lens with one finger and pressing the 2X.... it shows your finger for a fraction of a second and then it shows the zoomed wide camera.

This and some other Xiaomi phones have a skin blur effect that can't be disabled in the camera software. It's a shame because it's the only one that handles the telephoto lens nicely.
I had to give up on GCam because it would only take pictures in portrait mode, not in camera mode.
rear camera quality is awsome but the front has really werid boekh effect and blur
