Mi 9T and polarized sunglasses - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Questions & Answers

I am planning to buy a Mi 9T. Is the screen fully visible with polarized sunglasses, both in portrait and landscape mode?
I need to wear sunglasses whenever I go outside, so it would be a deal-breaker for me. Can someone confirm it for me, please?

Just tested. It's OK! Normal. I'm typing wearing them

Thanks! Have you checked landscape mode as well?

with my glasses, the polarizer goes black at 45 degrees angle, so vertical 0º and horizontal 90º works ok.

That's great to hear, thanks! I guess I'll be buying it soon.

You have to consider that not all sunglasses have the same polarized lenses. I own a Mi 9T and with my "all day" polarized sunglasses I see the screen black at 45° but OK at 0° and 90°. With my sports polarized sunglasses in landscape mode the screen is black.
Just for your information..

Thanks for the info. I ordered the phone already and will get it tomorrow. I hope it works, but if not, based on your info, I guess I can try to buy another pair of sunglasses that work well with it.

What I can tell you for sure is that in any case you will not be disappointed with the Mi 9t. The phone is a excellent device. I've been using it now for a year and never regretted the purchase.

Yeah, I've been thinking of buying it for months. My current phone is still completely fine. It's Mi A2. However it is polarized in portrait mode and I have to wear sunglasses for the next six months outside due to eye surgery, so it's unusable. I finally found an excuse to buy the 9T. It still seems the best value for money, even though it's a year old phone.

I got the phone, it is polarized at 45 degrees, so it's fine. Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah, the screen is fully visible. Only at a 45 degree angle on one side it gets dark.

One Screen in Landscape

OK so I love my One but I noticed something strange. If I'm wearing sunglasses and I turn the phone to landscape I can't see the screen anymore. It works perfect in portrait, its only in landscape. I've tried like 3 pairs of sunglasses. I know that polarized sunglasses can cause viewing issues on LCDs like my old iPad but I've never seen it like this. It doesn't really bother me its just really weird. Has anyone else noticed this? I fan barely read the screen in landscape. I will try to post pictures when I can.

Or rotate your sunglasses at the same time as your screen

I tried some random cheapo 3D polar filter glasses which you get in theaters and I can reproduce that. In my old HD2 (think it's a TN screen) it's much worse than on the One. Depending on from what angle you are looking at the screen (portrait/landscape), a white screen appears almost black. Barely readable. The One gives me rainbow colors. I can still read from it.
My laptop screen has the same.
With all this polarizing of light, this is how the LCD technology actually works and you can't do so much other than get an OLED phone.
I'm coming from a Note 2 that's prob why I don't remember having that problem.

The Z2 screen is polarized (can't be seen in landscape with polarized sunglasses)

So after some very confusing moments I just figured out that the Z2 screen is polarized so when holding the phone in landscape for example while taking a picture, you can't see the screen if you are wearing polarized sunglasses.
Here you can see it in a video I made:
http://youtu.be/kSWo7yLdfwU
This is the first time I see this in a smartphone, it's a little bit annoying, anyone knows the reason?, maybe the polarizing filter in the screen of the Z2 is what makes it a little bit dimmer than the competition?

pretty sure its to make the screen more visible under water... maybe.
edit: just googled, most phones have it now to stop glare from sun. thats it.
I know polarizing glasses stops water glare.. not sure how itd work under water though.
After seeing this first hand today it's a definite deal-breaker for me, as every pair of sunglasses I own are polarized, and I have no intention of changing that. I never had an issue before seeing the screen of my HTC One X & One M7 outside wearing sunglasses & taking photos in any orientation. Since the Z2 I received this week has a gap the size a credit card will fit into on the bottom left & both cameras are very off center I was going the exchange route but after noticing this today, no thanks. It's really a shame, maybe a future Xperia will be better though.
I found a review that mentions this issue on Pocket Lint: http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/128493-sony-xperia-z2-review
FWIW I have read elsewhere that the HTC One M8 shares this same issue too.
It is pretty daft considering most holiday snaps will be taken in landscape with the sunglasses on.

I guess Sony missed this one. Almost all LCD displays have a polarizing filter, but they are usually set to polarize at 45 degrees compared to sunglasses (or vice versa). You can try this by looking at an LCD display (not the Z2, obviously) or your digital watch through your sunglasses and then turning the glasses slowly.
BTW, my Google Nexus 7 tablet is also polarized at 90 degrees. I can see nothing in landscape view.
But my computer display and even the LCD in my car dash can be seen clearly. Unless I tilt my head 45 degrees.

Exactly! I've hated the camera on my M7 since day 1 and I was excited to finally upgrade to a phone with a high quality camera. Little did I know at the time the Z2 would also be useless on sunny days for taking photos

That's pretty interesting, I never really knew how that worked, thanks! I have noticed in some cars I couldn't see the nav screen with my sunglasses on, and I just thought it was a poor quality screen, luckily in my Jeep there's no problem at all though. Now I must find a phone with a legible screen for taking sunny day photos.

i wanna report this;
at first moment of using my XZ2 i tested this But Display was visible in all angles under polarized sunglasses.
compared by Note3 & Nexus5 >>
XZ2 is better than n5
but worse than note3 while wearing polarized sunglasses
i installed normal visible screen protector (comes with ultraFit Spigen Case)

Then your sunglasses aren't polarized, because the screen definitely is.
If you research LCD technology you will see a polarizing filter is required to make the screen work. If you then have polarizing glasses then you will have this issue. AMOLED technology is superior in this respect because it does not involve the use of polarized light.

Oh, this explains why I didn't have such a problem with Galaxy S4!..
Is it really that big of a deal to put your sunglasses on your head for the ten seconds it takes to snap a picture?

Well my polarised rayban does work with the phone when it's in horizontal orientation. It's just quite dim, but it's not completely dark like the one on YouTube.

The flaws you mentioned are present on almost all Z2's, so you aren't going to find one without flaws. Also if you are going to avoid a purchase of a phone strictly because you can't lift your glasses up for 3 seconds to snap a picture once or twice a month, then I wish you luck with your other life endevours lol From what I understand most phones with LCD's have polarized screens, so you may not be able to find one that doesn't have it. The Z2 is a great phone I wouldn't consider anything else.
Z2 is probably polarised for sunlight legibility. My tablet Z is also polarised in the opposite plane.

Heads up about display and polarized glasses.

Just a quick heads up. Polarized glasses (mine are prescription sunglasses) and the screen don't play well together. Rainbow effects over everything. I know this might not be a new occurrence to AMOLED screens, but just wanted to throw it out there as I just came from the Iphone 6 (IPS display) and I didn't even think to consider if my glasses would have any effect. :good: Just in case anyone else is coming from an LCD type display and didn't know.

With my g2 if I turned it sideways with polarized glasses its black. Its not the type of screen. Its the filter on the screen. And I know the iPhone 5s would rainbow too. I wouldn't know about the 6. I got rid of polarized lenses. Irritating lol

Yep I also had problems with polarised sunglasses looking at my Z3-C.
Pain in the arse really because I wear them while driving (prescription lenses otherwise I use regular glasses) and it makes it impossible.
That being said, it saves me from getting fines
It's better than my old M8, which was completely black in portrait mode while looking through polarized lenses.

Funny, I see rainbows and weird colors when looking at my wife's iPhone 6 through my Maui Jims. It depends on what glasses you have as well as what type of polarizer is used for the screen. AMOLED or IPS LCD doesn't matter as they both can have these issues depending on the glasses.
I have a pair of $200 Raybans that don't rainbow on anything really other than the displays on gas pumps

Moto G and polarised sunglasses

Hi everyone.
I've bought Moto G 2015 and today I wanted to use it as satnav in my car with TomTom installed.I have Rey-Ban polarised sunglasses and when phone is turned sideways it's almost impossible to see what's on the screen due to polarising effect.I have to use it only in portrait mode when I wear sunglasses. This wasn't an issue with 1gen Moto G and also I have no such problem when using iPhone.
Hope this info helps anyone.

This is an issue with 2014 model as well. Its the display used in the device.
That's why polarized shades are a waste of money. I've had this issue with a variety of smartphones over the years and stopped buying polarized glasses.

It's not just 2014 models, basically any IPS or LCD screen have this, I haven't encounter this issue with amoled screens. Bummer, since I do enjoy using polarized sunglasses

I've got an i9300, which has an AMOLED screen it to also emits polarised. Luckily with my sunglasses it's visible square on. 90 degree turn and its all black.
So for those with dark screens, try turning 90°, 180°.

Put a screen protector on it. They usually cancel out the 90 degree polarization effect.
Very good observation. Helped me

Hi, really a useful post. I had been trekking wearing a polaroid pair and was stunned to see the screen of Moto G3 go black when taking photos with the phone oriented with the length horizontal in the vertical plane.
Then i remembered reading your post...
No issues when the phone length is aligned up down in the vertical plane.
Thanks for such relevant posts.

Yeah...total waste of money, how they cut RIGHT THROUGH any sun glares on the surface of water, allowing you to see straight through it so you can spot rocks, logs, fish, and any other landscape features under the water. Boy is that a total load of crap, huh?

Screen polarization

I know this is a silly question, but... As I drive and will use the phone as GPS...
Anybody tested looking at the screen through polarized glasses? (any RayBan with "P").
For instance, my N5/N7 both black out completely if looked at horizontally through the glasses.
Guess it has to do with the way the light is polarized to pass through the panel.
Will this be an issue with AMOLED?
Just tried it out. Hold it portrait it is fine. Hold is landscape it is fine. Hold it at a 45° angle, well then you run into problems.
Thanks!!! Hope that's consistent across sunglasses brands (doubt all lenses have the same orientation, though)..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I'll try with my pair of Randolph Aviator this afternoon
I also wear polarized sunglasses and I have an observation and question:
On my Note 4, the polarizing filter on the screen is exactly 45 degrees, which is the way it should be, which means if you look at the screen at horizontal or vertical, you can see it at its most bright, non-polarized angle.
On the Nexus 6P, it looks like they "attempted" to put the polarizing filter at 45 degrees, but it is slightly off. So when viewing the screen at portrait, it's not quite at its brightest. The brightest point for mine is at a slight 15 to 20 degree tilt clockwise...
Can anyone else confirm if their polarizing filter is exactly at 45 degrees? I want to know if this is just the way they manufactured it (without attention to detail), or if this is a defect in my unit...
Thanks!
