Change File Permissions - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

I'm attempting to go through datrix's steps to get Hulu and Netflix videos working in Android auto. Since the system locale is read only I'm trying to work in the SD card. The issue I'm having is not being able to change Frida's (or any file's) permissions to 755 on the card. I'm using Root Explorer Pro and whenever I try the operation it tells me I can't change permissions in the SD card. Is there a way around this or am I stuck?

I have same problem. I use root explorer too, but i can't change permissions or do anything with my file (vendor/etc/wi-fi/...cfg.ini)
I install an magisk module that change this file (or replace it, idk) and after that i can change permissions on it to 7777.

Location of apps after app2sd?

With root explorer, i see that my apps are saved to something like '/system/sd/app,' but when I mount my G1, I can't find that folder. I can't even find the "system" folder. Anyone have any ideas?
Also, I pressed the "R/W" button on that folder in Root Explorer, but now I can't switch it back to R/O. It gives me an error saying, "Remount Failed: Device or resource busy."
what is it you want to do with the apps?
My gmail app is force closing, and I haven't found a way to reinstall it through market. I was going to try to replace the .apk.
I don't believe the gmail app is on the SD, it should be under /system/app/Gmail.apk
For the most part, the system apps install on the phone, the rest are on SD.
That still leads me to my first question, lol. I can't find the "system" folder after mounting my G1.
??
I don't know. I use the rooted file browser SUFBS and have never had a problem seeing the system folder.
Might have been associated with other changes you made to the system.
For me, if all else fails, I re-partition, wipe & re-flash.
Hopefully someone else can offer some better info.
I find it fine on my G1 via Root Explorer. It's just that I can't seem to locate it on my computer (i.e something like h:\system\app), after plugging my G1 in.
Sorry for any confusion.
You must be on a windows machine. You can not nativly see an ext partition under windows.
Look at the guides that tell you how to set up adb and adb push the application to the folder you want.

You can do these things right from recovery console, and probably terminal, I like recovery better though. place the file you want to use on the root of the SDcard. Since it is the Gmail.apk you want to replace you would go about it like this:
mount system
mount sdcard
cp /sdcard/Gmail.apk /system/app/Gmail.apk
reboot
thats pretty much it.

AdBlocker for ICS

Has anyone got a working AD-Blocker for the ICS Roms...?
I have tried to update the host file manually and this has not worked... as system is R/O
Tried setprop system.mount rw still no joy....
Just wondered if anyone had got anything working....
Thanks

You can change hosts file with rooted device. I suggest use Es File explorer for full access R/W file system. If you edit hosts file on windows, you must convert it using dos2unix before copy to A500.
ROOT WITH
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1546593
DO NOT INSTALL FACELOCK or ACER RING
then after you open your tablet.
1 - Launch A500 Remount
2 - Press /system (Full access in ICS LEAK)
reboot your tablet
redo 1 and 2
then
use root explorer, go to system and press r/w button to change to r/w that should work
1) Get root as mentioned earlier
2) download AdFree from the Play Store. It works with ICS
This is the easiest method

This is a good method, however I noticed some problems with links to sites with ad redirects not working with AdFree. ROM Toolbox on the Play Store has an ad blocking option built in that has some more options (such as blocking risky sites or porn) so you can tweak to your liking.
AdAway also works, plus it has quite good block lists (AdFree misses some ads for me).
Thanks guys... I have root access already but still cant get R/W....
I am going to flash another ROM via CM.....
I used to like it when the old flash able ZIP files work..
Thanks

Do you follow what I said or you just quick read..
the R/W you get it by doing what I said.
sometimes it's just weird, but reboot, and remount in RW then USE ONLY ROOT EXPLORER to mount R/W system/ others didn t make them work...
and command line neither...

[Q] Ics 4.0.3 rooted but unable to copy to system/fonts

Hello,
Thank you for helping me solve this problem. I am completely new to android.
I needed to install Indic fonts on acer a500. I used Blackthund3r's Easy tool to root ICS 4.0.3. But then when I try to copy the fonts into system/fonts on the device the copy always fails. I have tried Root Explorer, EZ File Browzer, etc.
What am I doing wrong? Ofcourse the rooting tool is successful in rooting the device... at least it says so. And I set the file system in the a500 root tool app to RW. But the copy still fails.
TIA.

You have root access but your system folder is still on read only. You need to set permissions to RW.
if using root explorer go to the folder you wanna copy from or to and click the grey box at the top saying "mount -rw" you will then be able to copy.
its like setting a windows file from read only to read, write, delete
Going from memory, but I think I remember reading that Blackthund3r only gives half root. You may not be able to mount the system folder as rw the usual way.
But Blackthund3r should have also installed an app called A500 Remount. If you have it, open and you will see an option to set system to mount r/w.
Then you should be able to paste what you need. After that, r/w permission will last until your next reboot. After reboot you'll need to use A500 Remount again if you need to access /system again.
Good luck...

i think ur sytem is protected try to disable it by using "wp_mod.ko" ...
Use wp mod.ko...I'm currently using it.....
Backup your cell before doing this
Do step by step very carefully....Or else, you'll have to flash the backup
Then try root uninstaller app

i already have done wp.ko method ... no profit.... it doesnt work... when i uninstall system app and reboot it come back again.... sdfix and root uninstaller is not working also........
after activating wp_mod.ko with insmod-command you have to do another command in terminal as su :
mount -o remount,rw /system
now the wp_mod.ko takes effect und you can edit /system (carefully)
after rebooting the device /system is writeprotected again and you have to renew the command
greetings

Do below steps for a permanent system write access
Do step by step very carefully. After this, install root uninstaller(Search Google play). If installed, uninstall & reinstall after this.
1 install TWRP
2 Boot into twrp
3. Select the "Mount" option on the main menu and tick system
4. Go back to the main menu and then go into the "Advanced" option. There will be a "File Manager" option
5. Navigate to the folder you saved the .ko file in and copy it (just touch the file and it will bring up the menu)
6. now navigate to /system/lib/modules and copy the file there by hitting the "select" button on the bottom right.
7. Navigate to /system/lib/modules and insure the file is there. Now touch it to bring up the menu. select "Chmod" option and enter in 644
8. reboot the device
9. Once booted fully open up Terminal emulator and type:
su
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
10. Once that's done open up a file manager app with root access and mount as r/w and navigate to /system/etc and look for the file install-recovery.sh*
11. edit the file using a text editor, adding the line insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko towards the bottom of the file
12. reboot and enjoy r/w on boot without running the command every time.

Thanks for the reply, man, but is there any tutorial I could follow those steps? I mean is there any videos or somehow? because this seems too much complicated to me, as I am still new to android world after getting addicted to Nokia mobiles..
Do games run smoothly on this phone since we're talking about moving the to SD?

Yeah, it runs smoothly epically. I didn't face any lag problems except for asphalt 8. It just lags on high graphics, but works fine for both medium and low..
Still waiting for someone to help me doing the up procedure. :/

Fist make your SD writable. Then install GL to SD.
Google for GL to SD tutorial.
Don't wait for anyone, Google is a good teacher.

Might just be bad luck for me, but my headphone jack stopped working, my sim card slot broke, and my SIM card spring broke. Also I didn't like the limited storage and awkward buttom placement.

storage/emulated need to make rrw but cant. I have root.

I am on android 7 and have an issue with the emulated folder. by default it is not readable or writable. the problem that i am facing is that when I am in an app and going back threw folders to access a removable flash drive, I cant get out of the emulated folder and into the parent folder (storage).
In a file explorer if i view /storage/emulated permissions, it is not readable or writable by anything other than root. If i try to change permissions, I get an error access denied.
I havent tried it through shell yet. What would that look like?
anyways, anyone got a fix for this? I want to make the folder rrw or fully rw
Hmmm what apps are you using. Name your file explorer and it's version.
What did you use to root, what package from what source?.
Personally i flashed supersu from supersu.com/download which is systemless root.
Some apps and file explorers may not be compatible with systemless root.
For example i use es file explorer v3.2.5.5 and i had to copy paste the content of /su/bin to /system/xbin in order to recognize root and enable rw permissions.

I will look into that. I think I have system root though and using esfileexplorer pro.
Emulator apps are my issue though. I try to navigate to my flash drive to set up sons and save. Storage is fine but storage/emulated though is tricky.. Some apps will just recognize that it don't have access but still let it up folder to /storage/ where I can then select flash drive...
Other apps will get hung on the emulated folder.. Not letting me folder up further.
Its a pain.. And to solve, I would just like full access to emulated

Thing is that you need to get a popup to grant permissions to the root of the extrrnal storage you want to use, then a windows will open where you can select your device and then hit select button.
You're not getting that.
So i suggest to change to systemless root which is proven to work and test by yourself.
I do not have AndroidTV installed but full Android Nougat yet that basic feature if i remember correctly is available even without rooting because i backup my stuff to my external USB flash drive before flashing custom firmware and i never rooted while in AndroidTV.
Now, i use Hyperspin with Retroarch and all my hyperspin folder with system, roms, etc is in my external USB 3.0 flash drive and works great no issues with those apps recognizing the external storage. Same goes for writing to my microsd with other apps
