God Mode? (solved)

How can I activate God Mode on a rooted XOOM? I want to nullify some stock apps, but Root Explorer is saying they are read only.

What do you mean by god mode. You already have root. That's all you should need.

That might not be the correct term, and it may require a custom rom. Not sure, but on Project Elite for the OG Droid, there's an option under General>System called God Mode that gives you full access to files on the system. That may just be what Actngrezy calls it in PE.
I just want to rename some of the apps that were included on the XOOM. Specifically, I want to nullify the Quick Office apk so I can install the NI Adam version. When I navigate to the apk in Root Explorer, I get an error telling me it's a read only file. I never got that error with the Droid. I can change whatever I want to on that device.

Did you click on mount r/w in root explorer

Did you install superuser? if so make sure you have allowed root explorer in it. Then on the top left hand side in root explorer hit mount r/w

Im just visiting the forum to steal a few files to compare with atrix , how ever if i read your cleverly phrased question correctly and you are trying to remove/freeze some apps that came on the Xoom and you are getting read only error its because to modify anything in the /system dir you need to
1. back up anything you might remove via adb pull or via adb shell cp
2. adb shell
3.su
4. mount -o rw,remount (what ever the path to zoom block is i dont know cause i dont have one ) exp /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
from there you can remove what ever you want out of system dir
5. exp. rm /system/app/quickoffice.apk

you can also get a system uninstaller in the market that will do it for you just the same, I usually use that in case there is more included than just the apk file

I thought about the uninstaller thing, but I'd rather not uninstall anything that came on the XOOM just in case. I just add an extra .null at the end of the apk (and associated files, which are easy to find) in case I need to restore them.
For instance, the NI Quick Office app force closes when you just breathe on the freaking tablet, so I had to restore the default one.

Cannot for the life of me get system r/w permissions

I've been running cm7 nightlies and now stable 7.0 for some time now. I have the new radio, ladios' kernel, and the sdcard read fix flashed.
I installed super manager and successfully deleted some of the stock cm7 media off my phone last week. Today, I came across the new GPS.conf files and wanted to try them.
Super manager couldn't switch the system to r/w despite saying "ok"
When I try to delete or write in the system with EStrongs file explorer, ghost commander, or android mate, they all give strange errors. The deleted files disappear but reappear after reboot. If I try to paste a file in system/etc I only get an error.
Superuser is successfully allowing permissions. I have the latest busybox. I have r/w enabled in each file manager.
I even tried an adb push test which first said "system is r/o only". The next try was "successful" but didn't do anything.
I'm still new with adb so I probably did something wrong. I typed in that r/w command, mount now shows: /dev/block/mtdblock3 on /system type yaffs2 (rw,relatime)
I can't figure out what changed and what I need to do to get r/w permissions. My only theory is that i had uninstalled and reinstalled super manager earlier and that somehow messed with my permissions.

You cannot permanently modify the system partition while the phone is booted into Android. The only way is to use adb while the phone is in recovery mode. Any changes you make while the phone is booted will be lost after a reboot.
Go check on those media files you thought you deleted. I bet you'll find they are still there.

I also thought that root managers advertising r/w capability would make permanent changes.
Next question:
Can I add and remove files from the cm7 zip before flashing it? Do I have to rezip it in any special or can windows 7 manage it fine?

Those programs will work on some phones but not the Aria.
Next question:
Can I add and remove files from the cm7 zip before flashing it? Do I have to rezip it in any special or can windows 7 manage it fine?

It really is as simple as adding or removing a few files from the zip file if you want to modify it.

Help with ADB/Ad Hoc on ICS

Hi!
I'm trying to enable Ad Hoc mode on an Acer A500 running OTA ICS. I installed the Acer USB drivers; rooted it with blackthund3r_ICS_Root 6.0; checked it with Root Checker Basic; installed ADB on my Win7 PC; and checked that "ADB devices" reponds with a device ID; and obtained the WPA_supplicant file mentioned in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625962
Every time I try to copy the new WPA_supplicant file to /system/bin, it fails. Also, copying WPA_supplicant with Root Explorer fails, even with the partition mounted RW.
Help! What am I missing?

You're not missing anything. The root method, does not give you true 100% System R-W access. Not with the stock bootloader. What you can try,
Copy your wpa file to the internal memory (remember where it is) (also long press and select copy)
Then run the included app "a500 Remounter" and select the System R-W option. (this was installed when you rooted) Then quickly go to your file manager, and set /System to R-W and try to paste your wpa file there.
You;ll have to play with this to get it going. Might have to do it a couple of times. This was a big pain, as I had to be very quick when doing things, as the R-W went away quickly.
I know you tried this a couple of times, but try it again. Also, make sure you;re using his version6 root app. It's a little better.
It's the reason why I moved to the ver3 hacked bootloader&kernel combo.
Your R-W usually goes away after you close the file manager app.

But here's a tip for others: Es File Explorer, in spite of claiming otherwise, doesn't seem to allow changing file permissions.

Yeah, another one that doesn't work well with the stock bootloader/root method is File Explorer HD. It just plain refuses. (hadn't used ES FE in a long time, so completely forgot about that one). Root Explorer is a little more reliable.
Glad you got it changed.
Also, when I was running stock and ver2 bootloader, I noticed I had to run the root program again to get R-W. Doesn't hurt anything, just had to run it again. But with ver3 bootloader w/altered boot.img, no problems. All explorer programs seem to work like they should.

Hmm I'd never had to rush to get remounted rw and having to press it in root explorer is a bug in RE. If you remount rw from cold THEN load Root Explorer it will show /system as already mounted rw

Maybe on some systems it does. I brought this up a few weeks ago. Maybe it's tablet specific.
After a week or so, the Remounter failed to change System to R-W. It claimed it did, but Root explorer still showed R-O. You couldn't change it. No other changes were made to the OS.
Ver6 did the same under ver2 bootloader with stock kernel. You had to be quick to do the changes, as the other user said. It's not a fluke.
Other known oddities,,,
File Explored HD would not recognize it. Failed to change System to R-W, Updating to Ver3 BL and kernel fixed this.
Of course it's a damn fine tool. It works well for most people. And we're thankful you take a part in development. Wish more would get involved.

[Q] Ics 4.0.3 rooted but unable to copy to system/fonts

Thank you for helping me solve this problem. I am completely new to android.
I needed to install Indic fonts on acer a500. I used Blackthund3r's Easy tool to root ICS 4.0.3. But then when I try to copy the fonts into system/fonts on the device the copy always fails. I have tried Root Explorer, EZ File Browzer, etc.
What am I doing wrong? Ofcourse the rooting tool is successful in rooting the device... at least it says so. And I set the file system in the a500 root tool app to RW. But the copy still fails.

You have root access but your system folder is still on read only. You need to set permissions to RW.

if using root explorer go to the folder you wanna copy from or to and click the grey box at the top saying "mount -rw" you will then be able to copy.
its like setting a windows file from read only to read,write,delete

Going from memory, but I think I remember reading that Blackthund3r only gives half root. You may not be able to mount the system folder as rw the usual way.
But Blackthund3r should have also installed an app called A500 Remount. If you have it, open and you will see an option to set system to mount r/w.
Then you should be able to paste what you need. After that, r/w permission will last until your next reboot. After reboot you'll need to use A500 Remount again if you need to access /system again.

(EASY ROOT) Z982 via QFIL or TWRP B20_Modified SYSRW 4/8/19

I have here, two packages.
The twrp one is meant for those who have already flashed twrp, the other is for first time root via EDL.
Both flash System RW, updated TWRP and magisk.
TWRP package will not wipe Data, You will loose no data
NOTE - You may have to mount the system RW.
NOTE - The above will be fixed via a future custom rom.
Without further ado, here are the instructions.
Initial Root Instructions
Prep: You must have a Pin screen lock set on your device to prevent data loss.
On your phone go to
Settings>Security>Screen Lock>PIN
and set a pin.
USB Debugging and OEM Unlocking have to be enabled to make this work.
On Your phone go to
Setting>About phone
Then tap on build number 10 time to unlock Developer Settings
Now go to
Settings>Developer Options
Then toggle usb debugging and oem unlocking.
1. Download this package B20 Via QFIL
2. Unzip the file to your desktop.
3. Right click on RunasAdmin_TestSignON.bat and run as administrator.
4. Let your machine reboot.
5. Run Run This.bat
6. Install everything it tells you to install.
NOTE Select WWAN-DHCP when asked
7. RTFM and flash (All the files your need for qfil are in the B20 Folder!!!!)
8. Profit
Then
9.Press and hold Vol+ and Power
10.Once the ZTE screen shows, let go of power while continuing to hold vol+
This will get you into twrp
11.Plug you phone into your computer and from your adb directory, run these commands.
12.adb shell
13.setenforce 0
14.exit
Now on your phone, in twrp
15.Swipe to allow midification
16.Tap Backup
17.check data
18.tap select storage
19.Select microsdcard
20.tap ok
21.Swipe to backup
22.Tap home
23.Tap wipe
24.Tap Format Data
25.Enter yes and tap the blue checkmark
26.Tap home
27.Tap Power off
28.Turn your phone on.
For those who have TWRP already on their device, follow these instructions.
1. Download this package. B20 via TWRP
2. Extract it to your desktop
3. Run "Flash full B25.bat"
4. Profit

Appreciate the update, same problem as before though RO /system and a mount -o rw,remount /system command results in the phone freezing and then restarting.

thought I was the only one, I just stopped trying, if I need to go mount rw, i just use root explorer . Even that freezes sometimes though smh. Some people just got it better than we do

I use ES File Explorer. Open the app, wait for su to grant it access, then change the system to RW. I've noticed that the phone will freeze if I tried to switch to RW before the File Explorer was granted su access.

I noticed that too. I also tried to see if root explorer would mount rw after I used es to mount rw, and it turns out that u still have to mount system separately in both file managers. Bummer because I was looking for a way to always have my system mounted as rw between both file managers.

I'm guessing once a custom rom is available, the whole system RW situation will be situated. Is there an advantage of root explorer over es explorer?

I personally use root explor to chmod files, I dont think es can do it, however es has its own perks as well, so I just keep both just in case

Lol, actually you can put init.d scripts in /sbin/.magisk/img/.core/service.d/ and they will do it on boot.
