Hello
i want to clean my german rom to the shortest size. I would like to remove the windows live messenger the transcriber and the office.
Then i want to flash the rom to my device the programm told me that the size of the nbh is wrong. It happens every time if the size goes under 50MB.
Any Ideas?
The file/ROM size can not be les then 51,200 mb. or 52.428.800 bytes
Does anyone know what limits it and how to get around that limiter if possible?
it's a common misconception that a smaller rom result in more storage
the part of the flash which is used for rom will be left empty and unused if
the rom is smaller
it will never be map'd to storage

It seems you still can flash small ROM, but from memory card.
To make more storage you should remove everytin but the OS files and follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332863

On the Herald, the Storage size is determined by the size of the os.nb. It resizes it until it hits 51,200k. If I padd the file with blanks, it can flash smaller files, but the storage doesn't get formatted past that one point.

That's what I've done, but my device will not format the storage past the 51,200kb limit... If you pad the file, it makes it that size... actually... I haven't tested it with a larger pad to see if it's the physical size or just the 51,200kb limit...
I bought a 4gb a while ago and it was detected and everything was working fine. It was when I hit the 2gb mark that I started having problems. Every time I stored more than 2gb into my card, put it in my wizard, it would delete everything new I had placed and just display 1.9gb used.
I tried placing dummy files to make it 3gb used but it would still delete everything after 2gb. My computer detects all files correctly, its when I put it into my wizard it deletes stuff.
Also, the phone even says 3755.31 MB storage available. and Used memory displays 1900 MB in use, I cant pass this mark.
I am using TNT's latest rom. Do I need to do anything to make my wizard be able to store more than 2gb?
I tried to partition the card so ill have less than 2gb in each partition but only the first partition was being displayed on the phone. and since I am using Windows XP, I cannot access the second partition on my card reader.
Sounds strange

But men? Why to try a 4gb sd?
all we know it has problem with this cards
maybe a reflash is needed
try to reflas the rom
or make a hard reset
Yeah but since it WAS showing up, I thought id give it a try. I tried a hard reset and even flashed the rom again.
Are you G4?
I think that the NonHC miniSD that you have needs to be formated in a desktop PC... or read a little about downgrade again to official wm5 if you are G4, cause i have read that you need to remove the hardSPL first or something... is better to read more hahaha
BTW if you are G3 so downgrade to an Official rom then retry the custom rom again... whatever you need to do is the final two hopes...
Good luck men.
I have just got a 16gb sd card which is recognised by my HD2 but copying my files straight to the card from both the pc and via pc cable meant that I have several issues with programs installed, such as jwmd icon changer, my icons all return back to the old ones...
I have formatted the sd card several times...
as soon as I replace the sd card and soft reset it works fine... just not with the 16gb card.
any suggestions?
Thanks
I have searched and tried the suggestions on a couple of the threads...

When you copy the files from the 8gb card, select on your pc to show all files (enable hidden files) from the maps that are in the 8gb card.
Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I had already done that....
I'm wondering if the card is faulty...
I am currently in the middle of a full format rather than a quick format...

Maybe you can test your card with H2testw to see if it's faulty.
I'll try that, thanks
The full format didnt make any difference........
to test the 16gb sandisk I got from a foreign seller on ebay, I used dd under linux, wrote several 4GB size files filled with zeroes, until it was full, and then copied them back to the HD.
Write and read operations went fine, so I suppose the card works alright, and is really a 16GB card (14.83GB really on it due to difference between GB and GiB), and I tested it for max 7.5MB/s write speed, and 7MB/s read speed.
So you could do the same write/read tests to see if all the data put on the card is really there, or if it's a fake/damaged 16GB card
Make Sure to also uncheck 'Hide Protected operationg system files' before copying
Er, I may be missing something here, but, all previously installed app associations will be unusable when you change mem card and you will need to reinstall everything.
My advice would be to install everything you can to phone mem and it will run more quickly and be more stable into the bargain, use less battery and run cooler!

I thought this maybe the case, but having read other threads, other people seem to have been able to do it... also, with previous other phones I have done it...
Hi. have you tested a clone software like DriveSnaphot. Thats the best method.

well... no problem here, I've switched from 8 to 16gb sd on my previous ipaq, simply mirrored the file structure, and all the .lnk files in the menu worked alright.... I do not really see the reason why those shortcuts shouldn't work anymore.

how did you do it? I tried the snap shot idea... no luck.....
I just had a look at the copied folders on the 16gb sd card via my pc, at the top level they seem ok, but once I look into each folder they all have crazy symbols instead of folder names.... this is obviously the problem... but what is causing it?
They are all normal on the original 8gb
Juat to add that they are ok on the 16gb card also until i put them into the hd2....

test the files.
It may be possible that the card is a fake 16gb or defective.
Copy 15gb to it from PC (prferably movies), then copy them back to hard disk on another folder. See if you can still watch all 15gb of movies. If you get errors, card is defective/fake.
There's no reason why a snapshot shouldn't work otherwise.

It's not a matter that they shouldn't work. It's that they often don't.
Some will have no problem and some will. Especially when attempting usage after a flash of ROM or any alteration of registry (dirrectly or indirrectly).
The OS knows the location of associated files and when a straight copy of files is made from one card to another there can be no certainty that the integrity of the file system will be maintained.
You wouldn't rely on your PC to acknowledge a new second Hard drive in exactly the same way as an older one was just by copying the files. There's fat and boot sector implications.
I'm currently testing the sd card with a program called h2testw which writes data to the card to test the capacity etc to see if its been hacked to show a fake capacity... its going to take 90 mins...so fingers crossed its not fake....

ehm, I'm sorry, but that doesn't make much sense
We are talking about file paths here, and nothing more; as long as the memory card is still named "Storage Card" in the device, you just need to copy the file structure over, everything will work. Or maybe everything except those registered programs that check the idenitification number of the memory card to see if they are installed on the correct media.
And in fact, if you mirror your hard drive to another, bigger one, you will have a copy of your previous system...
If you experienced something different, please make an example. Did you mirror the file structure from an old microsd to a new microsd and the system didn't work?
The other user here was having a problem with the file structure being corrupted, that makes sense, but just that...
This was the result.... can anyone tell me what this actually means?...

43MB ok, and 15.5GB of LOST data?
8.85MB/s of read speed against 3MB/s of write speed?
faaaaaaaaaaaake!
Sue your vendor, he probably sold you a very small microsd card which has been hacked to look like it's a 16gb one.
Either that, or the card is severely defective; anyway, sue your vendor
I got it on ebay for £10... but got the £10 refunded by paypal as it hadnt arrived... then a few weeks later it arrived... so its no loss... just annoying!
Greetings.
Does a larger data.img hamper performance by comparison to a smaller one or is it just boot up time that suffers?
Thanks
Gus

Boot up for me takes about, complete from turning phone off, 20 seconds. I read that going over 2 gigs does screw with Android.

Gents.
I searched this form without an exact description about the file data.img.
when installing Android in my HD2 I have options of data.img.
256MB, 512MB, 1GB ....etc.
My questions are:
What is the data.img for?
What is the difference between different sizes of this file?
Really appreciate your help.
The data.img file is what is used to replace the 'internal memory' a native android phone has. The 'internal memory' of your HD2 stores Windows Mobile, so we use the SD card. The Android OS and the user's apps are stored in the data.img file and loaded into the RAM memory when needed.
edit: Oh and, the bigger the file, the bigger your virtual internal memory is, the more apps you can install on it. I'd recommend going for a 512 mb since most ROMs (with Froyo) support moving Apps to the 'actual sd', so the same place the data.img resides in.

Check my signature for a link or go to my thread and you'll see the "Data.img maker". Go up to 2 gigs for use with storage.

Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Now I understand what ti is for. Noobie-me...
why does my tablet only display or use a small portion of my total storage space?
I have reformatted again and now I'm down to 1.8 GB of total hard drive capacity. I've tried clearing cash and I have literally no apps on it.

Thank you very much It worked... Well sort of... It is back to 32 GB but for some unknown reason I have 11 GB used coming off of a complete reformat I have nothing in any of the folders and I've deleted as much of the bloatware that I can get my fingers on... There might be a little something else on here but certainly not 11 GB

I do a lot of installs on a Tab A. After installing a new ROM - fresh install - you will have a little over 21GB free. This is normal.
