32gb tablet only showing 8 gb of total storage space - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

why does my tablet only display or use a small portion of my total storage space?

I have reformatted again and now I'm down to 1.8 GB of total hard drive capacity. I've tried clearing cash and I have literally no apps on it.

Thank you very much It worked... Well sort of... It is back to 32 GB but for some unknown reason I have 11 GB used coming off of a complete reformat I have nothing in any of the folders and I've deleted as much of the bloatware that I can get my fingers on... There might be a little something else on here but certainly not 11 GB

I do a lot of installs on a Tab A. After installing a new ROM - fresh install - you will have a little over 21GB free. This is normal.

memory card ?

sorry for this question but i've just got this amazing phone but i've put some apps on the sd card and can't find the sd card on the phone ? even googled this but to no avail ! please help a newbie , thanks !
you mean the physical location of the SD Card? Its under the back cover. You need to remove the battery to get it out.
Also, apps are not stored on the SD card, but rather on the internal memory of the phone.
A couple of things. First you need to set up the phone for non market applications. This is done thru Menu>>settings>>applications and check the box that says Unknown Sources.
Next, if you use Astro or some other file manager, you can go to /sdcard and whatever folder you keep your apps in.
I use EOEAppsinstaller to do this. It searches the whole SD card to find any APK files. Works great.

Yes and no. You can put apk's that you find on the net so you can put them on the SD card so you can install them but as for installing them so they run off the SD card that won't happen until you root the phone.

+1 for Astro File Manager! It also has a built in apk installer AND task killer. I love multitasking apps.
your movie should appear in the Gallery

another yes and no. Due to a bug both RAM AND ROM are limited to ~230MB ...all are waiting for the next update.

The 512MB Flash ROM is shared between the OS and your installed apps. The amount left over for your installed apps after the system reserves space for the OS, scratch, recovery, and update partitions is around 190MB or so. Google mentioned that they are working on allowing us to store installed apps on the SD card so the size of this partition should not matter eventually.
The 512MB RAM is not used for storing the apps, it is used for running them and is a different set of memory. In 2.1 there is a kernel limitation that prevents them from using all 512MB just yet, but the next version of the Android Linux kernel will remove that restriction and we should see another 100 to 150 MB of memory available for use. That improvement won't have any impact on how many apps you can install, just on how many apps you can run at the same time and how much work they can do before they elbow other apps out of the way.

Even more importantly - there would be no more disincentive for developers to start creating more interesting media-rich applications.
As it stands now, if you put a 10MB app on the market very few are going to be willing to waste that much space on their phone to download it. So, you wouldn't make much money on it. So, you are likely not going to bother developing it.
With relaxed storage restrictions will come nicer (looking, at least) apps...

Let's see if I have better luck getting a reply here :-/ I was running into problems with my vibrant I'm using a custom rom Vibrant_AOSPish_JK2_v1.1 I'm loving the rom but for some strange reason! I was able to transfer 900 songs to my phone's internal memory, all of a sudden an error popped out and it wouldn't let me transfer anymore, I thought well maybe there's a 900 limit so I removed them all and tried again and still it wouldn't let me. I then went and formated the vibrant's internal drive and my phone isn't malfunctioning or anything but all my 14 gigs I had are gone! now I only have 2 gigs I don't know what I did...
How'd you format the internal drive?

Never format from Windows. If you want to wipe the filesystem and start over, learn to use Odin.

I had this error with my first 2.2 flash but what I did to solve it was format the phone's SD card using the option through the phone itself. It wipes the card but I backed it up before I did that.
My problem was that I couldn't copy files TO the card but I could copy files from the card and I could create files on the card itself using the right click > new context menus. Weird, but formatting it fixed it for me.

New HTC HD2 user again :)

Hi I just wanted to say thank you to all of your hard work on this site. Both admin and developers. I didn't expect much when I bought this phone, I got very good price and it was brand new, so why not. Just got it 4 days ago.
Than I did some youtube and saw some pretty cool stuff, and here I am
Anyway, I tested out Android on SD and it was cool, I like it better than WM6.5 but camera could have been better. Feels like WM6.5 camera is better.
Now today I decided to try out Nand version. Omg it took me like 4-5hours, I know lots of information is already there, so I study, study and study. Decided to go with
[28 MAR][CWM ZIP]★★★★★HyperDroid-CM7-v1.0.4[a2sd+][CyanogenMod7 2.3.3][Tytung_R8.3]
Everything went smooth, except that I almost killed myself, it was not easy but it was fun. Lots of reboot on HD2 thou.
Anyway everything seems to be running fine and it feel smooth and good. About Ram I saw it list 411 but I guess it's correct because system use the rest.
Anyway sorry for making this long, I have one question. I tried to edit build.prop but without success. I tried and copy to memory and than to pc and edit there to make icon bigger. But when I tried to copy it over to root/system it fail. Same thing when I download text editor from Market and edit on phone, it can't save. How can I make icon bigger if I can't save the file?
Thanks for a wonderful site.
for editing build.prop you should get root explorer from the market or the internet.
then in root explorer go to /stystem and there is you build.prop
then click open in text editor and you should be fine

if you need any help with anything.. feel free to ask btw, try typhoon's gingerbread rom, no reboot issue
You need to make system R/W,its prolly in read only mode so you need to change it to read&write.
Thanks guys, I will play some more with the phone, haven't got time today. Just testing out some games. Since WM6.5 had very bad Market and barely any games. I tried not to ask to much, but do some research for my own, there's already so much written in forum. But sometimes it's kinda difficult to find the answer.
[email protected] Thanks, gonna try root explorer tonight.
Cheers!
PS: Have been having some issue, like sometimes I press back and phone freeze and stop responding. Suddenly it reboot itself. Happens 2 times.
Root Explorer works like charm!
Btw I see that Internal Storage is kinda small, it's like what 200mb or something?
Feels like some stuff that install, can't be remove to SD card. Wont this be a issue? I had a message told me that I have almost no space left :/
And btw games that I have for Android, like Angry Birds. Where does save games go? on SD card? Because I am receiving a new SD card on Friday and would love to use that one but don't wanna loose all save for my games.

I got 32GB Kingston yesterday, I copy all from my old card to PC, and than copy it over to new one. I had some problem at beginning, files wont install. But than I took new one out and reformat with SDFormatter, it seems to works fine now.
But unfortunately my saves files don't seems to work. I re-install Angry Birds but I have to start all over again.
Btw when you click on Apps button on homepage you get lots of apps/games, and you can make a new folder, and than customize it. But can you delete a folder call "All"

By the way when I flash to newest version of Hyperdroid do I need to make new partition so it work with APP2SD+ to work with exern patition?
Guys I just change Rom to:
[12.Apr.11][CWM ZIP]★★★★★HyperDroidGBX-v12[GRI54-2.3.3][a2sd+][TytR8.3][INSANE SPEED]
And I did the same in clockwork I made 1gb partition and install Rom. But it doesn't seems to work
I install games and they seems to be on phone only, but not before when I use other rom. What did I do wrong?
Not quite sure what you're getting at. When you make a partition, the phone recognizes that partition as additional space, or just available space the phone has. In other words, partition space is phone space according to the rom. So your apps when installed to the partition should say they are installed to phone. Correct me if this is not what you wanted or trying to get at.

Sorry if I didn't explain correctly. What I want is the extra extern space. As you know HD2 have small intern storage. And on my last Rom I did partition 1gb before I install the Rom. And when I install apps/games they all went to that extern instead of phone's intern.
But I did exactly same thing with this Rom, but it seems that games/apps that I used on last Rom, they went on phone's intern instead of that partition I made. Is there anyway I can make sure there's a extern partition? Any program that I can check with?
HD2 rules!
This week I bought my 3rd hd2 (I bought them and sold them in the past) like you study a lot and finally flashed the nandroid and finally feel android running as it deserves
BTW for density I recomend using 217, its the natural dpis for our scren size & resolution.

Some ROM's you have to turn on auto moving to SD card in the settings. Check there. Anything currently on your phone will have to be moved to the SD card via application manager.
You run any Linux? Easiest way to work with your SD card.

settings -> cyanogenmod settings -> application
That's where you turn on auto moving. Anything already installed will need moved manually via settings -> applications -> manage applications. Click on a program and choose "move to SD card".
Easy partition creation:
Reformat the whole thing in Win7 using default allocation size.
Boot into MAGLDR -> AD Recovery to enter CWM Recovery Mode
Once in CWM choose advanced, then choose Partition SD card, then choose the size of the partition (Maximum of 1024M recommended)
The choose 0 for the swap and partition away.
*Edit*
I saw you already did the partition trick with CWM. If you did that before installing HyperdroidGBX it all should work.

And yes to the partitioning. That's how I did mine. Not sure if the ROM need reinstalled as I've always had my card partitioned before the install.

[Q] Internal Storage Size 19505

Hello
I've recently flashed [Rom]Google Edition galaxy S4 rom for i9505 [27 June] [Pure Nexus Experience] onto my S4. After following all the instructions it's working fine. Except the internal storage size is still 9.25GB with 8.18GB allocated. I would have thought that removing the stock ROM would have freed the internal storage space?
Cheers.

I think you answered your own question, "allocated" means "reserved" so in other words even if you
did not have any rom flashed/installed at all the phone would still allocate/reserve the 8.18GB space
which cannot be used for normal storage.
Good luck!
Thanks for your reply. It's a bit of a bummer though, is there no way to release the total storage size of the phones internal memory for user allocation ? Would it be something the developers could work on. But then I guess it comes back to the old saying, just get an SD Card.

I doubt that any of the devs could increase the user usable space on the internal sdcard.
But even if they increased it by 1GB or 2GB no one including you would be satisfied with
that for more than a few minutes anyway.
The external sdcards are really not that expensive and spending $20-30 bucks on
32GB sdcard for a device which cost over $650 is not that big of a deal.
I would think the actual GS4GE has a different pit file.
actually i thought it would free up internal storage after flashing cm10.1...
I already flashed and indeed its still the same space as TW.. puzzling..

People have answered this many times. The size of storage you get will not increase unless Samsung changes the partition size.
repartition
isn't possible to re-partition. I am sure samsung had a good reason to book 6 GB for OS. but stock edition will not need all this space! i would say maybe not more than 3.
so cant we repartition the reserved to achieve usuable of 13GB?

Yes you can but its very risky. See below
Skipjacks said:
In order to partition that internal memory you have to wipe it. And that means everything. System, recovery, download mode, boot loader, everything.
The connection with Odin or adb at this point would be totally housed in RAM. It would need to maintain that connection in order to complete the task of adding the new partition, adding the download mode back, adding recovery, and finally the ROM itself.
If the phone lost its connection during that process or lost power or the update process got pushed out of ram for any reason the phone would be hard bricked as there would be no way to reestablish communication with it to restart the process. You couldn't power it on or boot it to anything. It would be a $600 paper weight.
Meanwhile the alternative option is to just go buy an $8 external 16gb SD card or a $20 external 32gb SD card. That carries no risk whatsoever and expands your phone's storage well beyond the original 9gb of usable space you started with.

thanks for the info. but i dont see why i would lost power during the process or anything like that. is it the same risk as flashing a rom via odin?
Is this why I am only able to use about three gigs of my internal storage space? I see 3 or so are partitioned off for the ROM (See second attachment from within TiB), then I have 10 gigs, but 7 are full of something I can't locate - either from within my phone or through my computer (See first attachment from within ES File Explorer).
I've got to assume this is just something going on with my phone. I think everyone would be pretty upset if their 16 gig phone only gave them 3 gigs...
I wish we had something like DTa2SD for the S4! That would be great...

When everything goes well you are right, you will probably reflash the partition 1000 times without having any issues... the problem is if you were to be unlucky
No the risk is not the same as flashing a rom. If the process of flashing a rom is interrupted you just wouldn't be able to reboot your phone normally but you could always reboot in recovery or download mode to retry flashing the rom.

No you should have 8/9 Gb free on your Internal SD. The space you lose are the 2.19Gb in the system partition, but you have definitely something that is occupying your Internal SD.
Well crap. Any idea how to get rid of whatever it is? I can't get my phone to go into mass transfer mode at all (even with the SG USB Mass Transfer app) so the only thing I can do is browse on my phone through file explorers and nothing can see it.

24BG instead of 32

On my redmy 4 prime on settings>storage I see only 24 GB tots instead of 32. I've even tried to wipe all stuffs from twrp but nothing changes. How can I fix it? I'm on LOS13
The remaining 8GB is used for system/os data. A phone with 32GB/64GB/128GB or any size of ROM storage doesn't mean that you can access all of its storage size for your own data without any deducted space for system. Same goes for PC as well.
Yes, I already know that, but 8GB even if the rom I downloaded is only 450MB? And system applications use up the 24GB
Oh silly boy.
Yes. That's TOTALLY NORMAL. Enjoy your phone.
OK :/ thank you

An Android ROM is 450/500 MB right, but a Custom ROM haven't all files Inside, some files are only on your smartphone.
