Anti-aliasing around icons - Google Pixel 4 Questions & Answers

Hi. Has anyone else noticed that around the icons, particularly white icons, the graphics are not completely smooth. There is pixelation around the edge of the icons and it looks a little rough.
Is this a common thing among pixel 4 owners? I recently came from an iPhone xs where the display and everything is just so clear and smooth, it's a bit of a jump to notice the difference here.
Thanks for your help.

smooth scrolling?

what's the reason that our phones don't have smooth scrolling across the home screens like the iPhone does? even the way the scrolling is in the weather /news app would be perfect
I think you might want to send your phone away to be replaced
uhm... looks pretty smooth to me are you using the stock rom? maybe try a factory reset?
This is a documented thing. It is smoother than the droid, but compared to the iPhone it is choppy, hopefully it is a software thing that can be fixed.
Try helixlauncher
I know what you mean. The iPhone is smooth and Nexus is occationally choppy & sometimes stutters - its simply not as smooth.
The best way I can describe this to persons not familiar with iPhone is screen scrolling on the iphone looks like an animation with about 25~30fps, the nexus one looks like an animation with about 5~15fps. While not the end of the world, it certainly annoys me (and others)!
I have noticed also that the appearance of this less than smooth side scolling is further visible with live backgrounds & lighter wallpapers (where as a pretty much black wallpaper seems to reduce the visible stuttering).
Does the iPhone use OPENGL thoughout its OS - I seem to remember reading something like this. Perhaps if launcher was redone for OPENGL...?
This annoys the hell out of me. what annoys me more is that our phones are capable of silky smooth scrolling. It seems that the gpu downclocks itself most of the time and just refuses to display more than 5-10 fps. it's certainly not a limitation of the hardware since reducing the graphics load by using a stationary wallpaper (one that doesn't even slide side to side like the stock picture wallpaper does) or just black still results in the horrid framerates.
i've found a workaround however. using a live wallpaper which demands a high framerate such as silhouette or my current favorite: unixseb's bootanimation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5697670&postcount=28. with either of these wallpapers running our phones seem to kick it up a notch and give >30fps silkyness :-D
this is all with helixlauncher2 btw
it drives me daft as well everytime it happens i think to myself this never happened on the iphone ,it just stutters before it moves and when imputting phone numbers in ,there just seams just a slight delay and considering this has a faster processer it should be lightning fast no stutter ,and if you cant see it your lying to yourself ,or you have never had an iphone, slower processer but the ui is just much quicker, but dont get me wrong i wouldnt go back to the the 3gs from my n1 but i will probably move to the iphone 4g

Because the iPhone is a nasty black screen with nothing but icons but the Nexus One has Live Wallpapers / normal wallpapers, interactive & updating Widgets, and a screen with 2.5 times the resolution?

That is no excuse, Sense has this and more; and the scrolling is quite silky. It obviously just isn't a smooth, Launcher2 I mean.
Notice that Helix Launcher2 is the Nexus Launcher2 but it is 10x more smooth as that standard unchanged home. Obviously Google just didn't do something right, the scrolling is down right pitiful on the Home screen - where it could have been easily as smooth as the iPhone.
I get what you mean though, the iPhone doesn't have much to slow it down. Therefore no reason to be not smooth.

Basically, this. The resolution thing in particular is a huge factor. We aren't just talking about merely double the resolution, here.
Try something, guys. Dig up your oldest, ****tiest laptop/PC. Increase resolution to the highest it will support and see if your performance suffers. Or try this with a game, for that matter, and compare the framerate of 800*600 with 1920*1200.
from what I've read, apple uses a different physics engine than android.
I have to say that indeed the iphone has such a better swiping/scrolling experience than my N1 (even w/ an overclocked desire ROM). The N1, despite it's less powerful GPU as compared to the iphone's is supposed to compensate with its snapdragon cpu. It would be interesting to see how the samsung with the a better cpu and gpu will perform.
from: http://androidandme.com/2010/03/new...bird-chip-to-have-3x-gpu-power-of-snapdragon/
Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:
Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7-14 million(?) triangles/sec
Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec
iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 million triangles/sec
Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec
And for comparison a few consoles:
PS3: 250 million triangles/sec
Xbox 360: 500 million triangles/sec

has nothing really to do with resolution in this case it have everything to do with the launcher. If resolution was the factor then home replacements like pandahome would not but insanely smooth on my N1.
Have a Touch and a N1 and can't really tell any real difference between scrolling on both
Sometimes I wonder in N1 users are just more anal that most
has nothing to do with being anal but some people just notice smaller details than others. fact is that the scrolling has a low framerate like what everyone else on here is saying. if ur on cyanogen mod try scrolling from one home screen to the other as slow as possible and see how it stutters its way across and if you do it on an iphone it will go across perfectly smooth
Sense on htc desire is very fast and smooth for why on nexus no ???? for why im perturbed
this is one of the worst things about android for me as well - just a small thing like this has so much of an effect on the user experience, and it's why people always will say the touch screen is 'better' on an iphone than an android phone (especially stock) when they're side to side.
i think it's basically to do with the fact the gpu isn't used. there's a link here about it where people with a lot more knowledge than me shed some light on the subject as well.
also i seem to remember it having something to do with obtaining licences from the cpu manufacturers or something to get access to the gpu code or something or other. although i cant find the link to where i read that and i dont fully understand what i said lol so take it with a pinch of salt.
://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6914
(add http in front of the link above btw)
either way i think this is definitely something google needs to address.
but I was just comparing this to an iPhone 3g yesterday and they both seemed the same to me. scrolling between homescreens was equally choppy (or lack there of, imo). or is the iPhone 3gs improved over the 3g? either way I think its a rather small complaint.

well the 3gs is almost twice as fast as the 3g (if im not mistaken). so there is a difference between the two. i used to compare my 3gs to my moms 3g and would tell her she needs to upgrade. LOL
and the 3gs is smoother than both n1 and 3g scrolling wise. Im sure itll be a software fix down the line.

Galaxy note displaying small fonts? Crisp or not?

Upgraded my iPhone 4 and got a Samsung Skyrocket. I love the screen constrast, but that's it. When reading the screen gives me the impression of being smaller than a 3.5" iPhone, if that's possible. I keep zooming in and out and side to side at every website I load. With the iPhone, bam, I was there, or two clicks away from the correct way to read something.
Love the phone, except the screen. I tried to tweak the density after rooting, but I can't fabricate pixels. Text looks coarse and it's hard to find a correct zoom size. Maybe it's a fonts issue?
Although I'm 41 I'm pretty good at reading small fonts, but the small fonts on the iPhone 4 screen were great, while on the Skyrocket it's a mess. I have to increase the zoon to a point where I'm scrolling websites left to right, which I hate. I could get full width on the iPhone 4 even reading forums (so I like to see the nick name on the left and other info, not only the post)...not so on the Skyrocket (before you think my eyes are a freak exception I must add that, OTOH, I am myopic, so far from perfect!)
So what I want from a review is this: will the Galaxy note and/or the Skyrocket HD give me the same crisp sense I got with the iPhone 4 when reading? That's all I care about when it comes to resolutions CRISP TEXT!
Thanks!
You can calculate the pixel density (dpi) yourself. iPhone 4 has the highest DPI due to its retina display nature (326 dpi). Galaxy Nexus is very close (316 dpi) IIRC. And GNote will be slightly lower due to larger screen. They all should be much better than the WVGA resolution on a 4.3" or 4.5" screen, e.g. GS2 or Skyrocket. So text readability should be better. BTW, iPhone 4 screen has the lowest contrast ratio among other phone screens.

I can't comment on the Skyrocket HD and can't make a comparison to the iPhone 4, but the text on the Note is as clear and crisp as I've ever seen. I came from an Infuse and an GS2 and marvel every day at how much better the screen is. I still play with my GS2 on occasion but after using the Note for a month now I could never go back to it for daily use.
My desktop and laptop are gathering dust as I find myself using the Note more and more for browsing and reading online.

If you are used to iPhone retina. Do not buy an SAMOLED display.
Its the worst kind of display ever made. Maybe look for a SAMOLED plus device. (But I do not like AMOLED in general. In this stage its just bad...)
But for sure not the old Pentile matrix. No matter how much you try, it will never look like an S-LCD, retina etc.
And no its not crisp. Nothing you were used to on iPhone.
I have both. Note and iPhone
(Also still Galaxy S)
You can pretty much google non biased pages about the SAMOLED technology explained.
And the SAMOLED HD is still a pentile matrix.
As I was getting it I was hoping due to its size I wont see the difference like I seen it on the SGS. But no.. Full page view my not possible due the fonts becoming not readable. Despite the advertising or ppl telling you how crisp it is.
Just go to a shop and try to browse a bit with it. And look on the small fonts.
Also memory effect and the "lines" on the SAMOLED is still a problem and more so seen on the Note.
I would not recommend this phone to ppl with "good" eyes (looking for sharp, smooth fonts) or coming from decent DPI displays.

I think this is the best article for this http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1319022037
It has 315 ppi (pixels per inch), which is slightly lower than the Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, which has a pixel density of 326 ppi. One would imagine that this qualifies as a "Retina Display" (because it is over 300 ppi and viewed from 10-12 inches) but actually it does not.
Because we are talking about a Super AMOLED display and not a Super AMOLED Plus, the display is based on a so-called PenTile pixel structure, where pixels share subpixels.
And if you calculate the real pixel density you will find that the Galaxy Nexus is actually closer to a “real” ppi value of 200, which is just slightly higher than on the Galaxy S II (that uses a Super AMOLED Plus with RGB pixel structure). Some claim that a PenTile panel needs around 420 ppi to qualify as a Retina display and that is probably also the reason why Retina is nowhere to be found on the specs sheets of neither Galaxy Note nor Galaxy Nexus.

Thanks all for the useful input. I was this close to buy one now on the Expansys website, but now I'm worried.
I sold my iP4 already, and I'm stuck with the Skyrocket for now. I would buy the Note and sell the skyrocket on ebay, but now I don't know.
Back to research. I wonder what store would sell the note here in the bay area (so that I can see one with my own eyes).

No, it is not as smooth as it is compared to the IP4, I can easily see the jagged edges/feathering on the text. Maybe you need to wait for an HD SAMOLED Plus.
Also if you care about the screen quality in all aspects you might find the HD SAMOLED lacking in quality control if you dont get lucky with the panel lottery.
Ok here is your answer:
My wife is also myopic she reads very small letters by simply removing her eye glasses.
So what I did is that on the Opera Mobile I went to the the XDA website and zoomed it All the way out so that the entire page was visible and handed my GNote to her to read it without zooming in,she could very easily read it since the letters were very crisp, please keep in mind that she uses an Iphone4 and in her opinion the reading experience is at least as good on the GNote as well, however you should know that the text in both stock browser and Dolphin are much larger even I can read it without zooming in.
Hope this helps.
Jack
You guys make it seem horrible and unusable. I dont have the greatest eyes buy i can read pages witjout zooming. Small text is not as crisp as ip4 but not that far behind.

The OP is asking if its the "same" the answer is only yes or no and nothing in between.
From what I can tell nobody is making it sound like its unusable, infact you see more of the website on the Galaxy Note as compared to the IP4 due to the higher resolution but the crisp text feeling is not the same.
At least he only cares for text quality and is not concerned about brightness uniformity on whites or if they are pure or yellowish whites.
That is the worst example i've seen You can at least upload a screenshot with the full resolution. Don't use the S-Pen method, but do the swipe. That way you'll get the correct size.
And don't upload it with the XDA app. It compresses the image even more

There's quite a bit of FUD here.
The size of the characters is a function of screen resolution, screen size and zoom level. The Galaxy Note has a resolution of 1280x800 which is similar to many 12" laptops, but is crammed into a 5.3" display. Hence text will appear tiny when a normal webpage is displayed at native resolution without any zoom.
Having said that, due to the screen size and resolution, it's very easy to view an entire webpage and zooming into a section you want to read is a matter of a couple of touches, just like an iPhone.
@RipplingHurst: Try alternate browsers like Opera, Dolphin, Firefox to compare how well the page reflows when zoomed in. I believe that is the real crux of your issue.

Sure, those 3 factors are what influence the size of the characters, but that's only one factor in legibility. The pentile display makes for a significantly worse reading experience, there's no two ways about it. Particularly in greyscale.
And as the previous replies stated, it all depends on what you're used to. I'm used to working on high-end IPS monitors, which probably makes it worse for me.
But I agree with you that no matter how good/bad the display is, the browser still makes the biggest difference. And on the iPhone, the browser is very, very good at zooming in.
I recently noticed that the stock Note browser (most likely on all Android stock browsers), it uses static dithering when you zoom in... which is just ridiculous when you consider the power it's got!
Very interesting points all. I should definitely try other browsers. i think playing with apps like lcd density is not productive to what im trying to accomplish. To the one who pointed how the wife reads well in the note being myopic like me, that really helped me and tilted me back to trading my skyrocket for the note. will see what happens.
i'm really used to read in bed with my phone very close to me, and I l'd like to quickly find a zooming that I like no matter what page. Apple stock browser is really good at zooming and deciding what to render together with text, as it was pointed above.
Now movies are not that important to me and I think the skyrocket does a much better job than the iPhone at that. Im sure I wouldn't be disapointed with the Note. I've read about the white tint and I can live with that, no problem.
But I really wish web browser had all the rendering power needed to display smooth text. For me that's the big deal about high resolutions in tiny screens.

Ok me trying again. Despite I wrote you all up. Even with the links and all.
If you want quality and smooth fonts especially the small ones. The PenTile is not physically able to do that. Just to some extent of size. Has really not much to do with the browser... that rendering can really do only this much when it comes to small letters.
If you take out the rendering and the browser out of the equation when it comes down to it the SAMOLED will loose against SLCD , or IPS or how they are all called.
I never said its unusable and sincerely there is no competition for that res and screen for the next 2 months I guess or more. If it was unusable I would already sell it. But I would rather wait for an LCD with that res phone.
Am I just telling you. You will see thats not smooth.
Especially now that many ppl told you. And you using the phone on your nose.

It wold be better if you can try the device for your self and decide. Im very particular about the screen and i easily get bothered about the yellowish whites that my replacement screen has.. and in dont like to crack up the brightness when im in bed using my phone but thats personal preference.
Movies on the galaxy note is borked for now theres a thread about it and this is the major deal breaker for me and the source of my decision to get a refund.
The screen quality/technology is the major factor on how great your text will appear. The really high ppi the ip4 makes it hard to beat in text smoothness when zoomed out. But it doesnt mean the galaxy note is bad you just dont get that jagged free text or thst safari goodness in text reflow.

Guys, no one said you cant use the Note....
But the OP is in particular out for smoothness.
No font, rendering etc cant help the physical build of PenTile. Its the hardware thats bad or that I am not get crucified, lets say not perfect... (far from perfect )
Please read something about it before you jump to advices. Look closely to your display. You really had to be blind to not see that the fonts, object anything is not smooth.
The other faults of the SAMOLED that the OP will notice particularly on brown or grey background I wont even start to talk about .

One of the great joys of the note is that due to its large screen you don't need to hold it so close... Even though the dpi is less than the iphone, the fact that you can hold it further away should make up for it.. If you showed the same amount of text on the note and the iphone, does anyone really say it reads easier on the iphone?

Display Qualität

Fresh owner of a TF300T coming from an Ipad, since both are IPS Panels im kind of disappointed with the Transformers.
The colours are pretty much washed out and the white is dominating the contrast, its quite a difference to the Ipad.
Can anybody confirm that this is by design, or is it just my personal perception?! Or maybe I've got a faulty device?
I don't notice this issue my angry birds looks as good as the ipad or iPhone. I have a fairly subdued color scheme otherwise though.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk 2
I'll need some more time with the device to be able to say something thoughtful about it, though perhaps I can hook up a colorimeter and give you a scientific measurement..
I have noticed a "washed out" effect on mine as well, but only in two circumstances:
1) When setting the tab to "Power Saving" mode
2) When using Splashtop, either the built-in version or THD
I own both a TF300 and a TF101 and the display on the TF300 does appear a little washed out compared to my TF101.
Totally agree, display quality seems below tf101 and way below the new ipad. highly noticeable. While is not terrible, it's pretty disappointing specially coming from a $400 device($550 total spent w/ dock plus taxes), same as tf101 when was released. tf101 blows away the tf300t regarding quality construction, including the "IPS" screen.
add those cons to the tf300t browser issues, some game compatibility issues with tegra 3 SoC, unexpected app and games shutdowns, occasional flickering on some games and what you got?
Exactly ...the display color on mine is very washed out as well...You Tube Videos and CNN Videos which I just tried today are dismal...Im very dissapointed...I wanted to compare to the 201...but none in the Best Buy...or anywhere else for that matter...Im goin back to compare to other tablets to see the difference...Might go for the 201...I can do an exchange in 30 days...Unless there is a way to adjust these colors...I luv basically everything else about it...Only had it for two days...So we'll see...
Some of the Primes also have washed out colors, especially if you get a warm tone one. The last one I had was cool tone and had excellent colors.

What do you guys mean by washed out colours? Is it very noticeable? Thanks

Yep very noticeable...Like I said my CNN and You Tube Videos...Are blurred and washed out...
I didn't catch this in the Store...Picked it up Monday ...started playin around with it yesterday and today...Never had a Tablet before...Just Smartphones and of course Laptops and PC's...But the colors on my Samsung Epic 4g Touch pop...That screen is amazin...So far very let down with this screen...as far as Color Display...
Takin it back on the weekend and have them show me a few more to see if this is just a bad one or not...I don't want the Ipad or Acer...But I watched Smackdowns on YT between the 300,201 and the Acer 500 and there wasn't a real bad complaint from anyone about the color on the 300 just the brightness...Im satisfied with the brightness on this one but color ...Forgetabout it...
Im hopin its a bad one...the 700 won't be out to June...Didn't really want to wait...This looked like a good deal...Ill just have to wait and see what happens on the weekend...Their (BB) return policy is great
This thread and other comments about the TF300's display piqued my curiosity, so I stopped in at Best Buy to check it out. This BB had a TF300 and a TF101 side by side, so it was easy to do a comparison to the 101, which I already own and am familiar with.
I set the brightness to max on both tablets and loaded the same websites on each, showing a mix of text and color graphics. The display on the 101 looked exactly as I would expect. The difference was that the 101 was notably brighter than the 300, and probably for that same reason the white background to the text was whiter and the colors a bit more pronounced. I'm not sure how much of an issue that would be if I were looking only at the TF300, since it's still a nice screen, but seeing them side by side I would personally prefer the screen on the 101.

Reds aren't really red, kind of washed out orangey red, blues are pale. It's especially noticable with Asus tree wallpaper, the clouds kind of blend into the sky. It's almost like water colors but not quite that bad.
The 300 i'm on now has very nice colors, almost perfect to real life, took some pictures and held my 300 next to the object and it was pretty close to what I saw in real life.
My panel is also cool in color tone, so all the ones I've seen with warm screens are kind of washed out, the ones with the cool tone panels have better color IMO.
All seems good on my end...

Thanx for the replies...Went back to BB yesterday...Finally got to see the 201 in the flesh...when compared to the 300 that was next to it, It blew it away for pic quality and video quality...I definitley saw the difference...I like the 300 don't get me wrong...But my 300 had a problem with display in my opinion...Now the 300 I saw there looked better than mine but not better than the 201...Just my opinion...So I returned mine forked over the $127 more countin tax...and Im a Happy Camper...
I guess I got to go over to the 201 Forums...It was a nice visit here although it was short...
Tonite Installin Root Custom Rom and Overclockin..........

Screen calibration improved in Lollipop?

I hadn't been paying a whole lot of attention since upgrading the other day but then I laid the phone next to my wife's S5 and maybe I'm imagining things but the screen on the Moto X feels a lot less warm than it did a week ago when compared to the much cooler toned Galaxy S5. Am I wrong here?

I just saw a display unit at a verizon store and my thoughts were exactly the same as yours !?!? I saw the same display units at the same verizon store a month or so ago with kitkat and the super saturated screen was the first thought that came to my mind - this was the first time I checked it out and that was a deal breaker for me.
But this second visit has gotten me thinking, so much so that I googled it up and came across your post. Have you had a chance to compare/analyze it more ? I had to open the play store on the moto x AND Htc One to reconfirm the saturation ! But definitely looked less saturated as compared to the Nexus 6 I recently saw.
Anybody else - any feedback ?
Sure has. The colors seem a lot more contrasty and punchy! Whites are also slightly better. It closely matches the nexus 6 screen now, looks wonderful!

I was actually suggesting the opposite - the Nexus 6 is super saturated ~ poor screen calibration. The Moto X was similar but as @WilliamRBR also suggested it seems the screen calibration may have been tweaked in the lollipop update thus resulting in less of the super saturated unreal colors and more closer to the Note 4 calibration ~ which is quiet good.
Screen calibration is better on lollipop, a lot less saturated.

Fantastic ! So its just not me then Hopefully more users can chime in
It's so good I'm just loving it
Glad to hear this!
I didn't notice any difference.
Serious? It's more than noticeable! Just open the play store and look at the red, green etc... No more flashy.
For me it's still oversaturated and incorrectly calibrated, especially when comparing to Nexus 5.
I have owned this device for about two months now. To be honest, I did notice that, a few days before the Lollipop update (wich happened last week to me), the colors seemed more satured than the usual. I concluded (wrongly?) it had to do with the ageing of the screen.
But even after the update I feel the colors are still as satured as they were in KK (wich I find pretty nice).
Or maybe my eyes are not so great anymore.
Quiet a mixed bag here, maybe M8 is the way to go given the comparable cameras but with extra battery and nicer screen. Thank you all for sharing your inputs here though.
I actually really like the "oversaturated" colors, and would prefer it to at least be an option to set the saturation/calibration level. The main reason I love OLED so much is because of this, and I hope they wouldn't force a change like that in the update. Something like the Samsung calibration menu would be nice.

oh yeah if motorola had display options like samsung provides - essentially different levels of saturation - THAT WOULD BE AWESOME !!! Everyone of us can have their desired levels of oomph and punch or the lack of
It looks exactly the same, but is a beautiful screen regardless.
Mine is too warm... That is the only issue that I have with it and have to use calibration app to make it cooler

Which app?
Does the camera autofocus correctly during video capture in the Lollipop?
My Moto X 2 has Kitkat and doesn't autofocus during video captures. It acts same like fixed focus came of Moto E, though autofocus works perfectly fine during photo capture. I have tried lot of third party camera apps, cleared cache as suggested by moto care but still no solution
Now I am badly missing my old and gold Atrix 2 badly, thankfully that is still at home but no more mine.

Anyone coming from samsung galaxy note 10 plus?

anyone coming from note 10 plus? What are your thoughts, impressions and any regrets please?
I'd check on Reddit, noticed a few already made the switch.
I have a Samsung note 10 note and I love it! Nothing to say
I came from S10e which is for the comparision itself a better equivalent because Note 10 Plus is a bit more unique to be fair. But to respond your question. I am 100 % happy with ma choice to go for the P4. I just love it. And I am honestly impressed by the battery. Ain't super but good enough for me to manage all day long having evyrything turned on (90Hz display always on, Motion Gestures that work awesome e.g. with Spotify etc.). Futhermore having qi chargers in ma office, at home, in the car. So I couldn't care less for SOT. Anyways, a perfect phone - for me
I came from s10+ and I have no regrets. Forgot how much more polished and smooth the pixel line is. Battery is ok. I make it over 24+ hours almost every charge.
Hello, abit late, I came on p4 after 5 months with N10 plus. No regrets at all. I found pixel 4 better. Smoother. Battery in standby is better than note. I turned off AOD motion sense and assistant, I never use them. I get like 2-3 % battery per night. Screen is better calibrated. I miss Dolby Atmos. That was really nice. Apart that is amazing.
I came from an S10+.
Not entirely by choice, since I slammed my 1yr old S10+ (without even a scratch on it) in my trunk and killed it (with 11 more payments left). I had saved up to pay it off and get a Pixel 5 XL later this year, but had to get a phone NOW and found a killer deal on a Pixel 4.
I've had Nexus phones in the past, and forgot how much better "Google" phones were than other, higher end, manufacturer phones were.
The Pixel is so much smoother and responsive. I don't miss the larger screen as much as I though I would either, but I do miss the extra battery insurance (last longer between charges), but the Pixel 4 is getting better since getting it almost a week ago.
Coming from S10e and Note10, there isn't much of a difference in the overall speed of my new Pixel 4 (just a few days old).
I'm not a fan of the Pixel launcher just because the icons are too small. No option to resize and unable to change the grid size.
I want to use the stock navigation gestures and there's still compatibility issues with 3rd party launchers like Nova so it's a no go for me.
Font style is INCONSISTENT throughout the UI as sub-menus have different font styles (ex. go to Display > Colors. The font style is different from the one you have chosen from the launcher).
I'd say the overall look of Samsung One UI is way way better than the "stock" Google Pixel phone UI.
The read/write speed is also slow. Take note I still have my S10e with me and both are using UFS 2.1. Loading of pictures from Photos is noticeably slower and deleting pictures from TRASH in Google Photos takes AGES in my Pixel 4 (say, I have 10 photos in there). And no, I am not connected to the cloud so these are all local files.
I never had this issue from a Samsung or even my Motorola.
I also encountered a weird lag/stutter when playing a game (Mobile Legends). This is after some 20-minute game. I was about to navigate out of the app but I couldn't because of the stuttering (it doesn't response to the touch and it seems like the phone underclocked itself). The only way is to bring up the pill and force stop the app.
All the these minor quirks make me think how the Google employees performed their testing. (I'm a software tester by profession).
As for the camera, we all know how good it is so I won't talk about that anymore.
