Fresh owner of a TF300T coming from an Ipad, since both are IPS Panels im kind of disappointed with the Transformers.
The colours are pretty much washed out and the white is dominating the contrast, its quite a difference to the Ipad.
Can anybody confirm that this is by design, or is it just my personal perception?! Or maybe I've got a faulty device?
I don't notice this issue my angry birds looks as good as the ipad or iPhone. I have a fairly subdued color scheme otherwise though.

I'll need some more time with the device to be able to say something thoughtful about it, though perhaps I can hook up a colorimeter and give you a scientific measurement..
I have noticed a "washed out" effect on mine as well, but only in two circumstances:
1) When setting the tab to "Power Saving" mode
2) When using Splashtop, either the built-in version or THD
I own both a TF300 and a TF101 and the display on the TF300 does appear a little washed out compared to my TF101.
Totally agree, display quality seems below tf101 and way below the new ipad. highly noticeable. While is not terrible, it's pretty disappointing specially coming from a $400 device($550 total spent w/ dock plus taxes), same as tf101 when was released. tf101 blows away the tf300t regarding quality construction, including the "IPS" screen.
add those cons to the tf300t browser issues, some game compatibility issues with tegra 3 SoC, unexpected app and games shutdowns, occasional flickering on some games and what you got?
Exactly ...the display color on mine is very washed out as well...You Tube Videos and CNN Videos which I just tried today are dismal...Im very dissapointed...I wanted to compare to the 201...but none in the Best Buy...or anywhere else for that matter...Im goin back to compare to other tablets to see the difference...Might go for the 201...I can do an exchange in 30 days...Unless there is a way to adjust these colors...I luv basically everything else about it...Only had it for two days...So we'll see...
Some of the Primes also have washed out colors, especially if you get a warm tone one. The last one I had was cool tone and had excellent colors.

Oh...so theres cool tone ones...Somthin I didn't know ...Back to the BB and have them open a few to see the difference...I definitley want the 300...just not one with colors that suck...Thats why I wanted to compare it to a 201...Saw the videos on You Tube...with side by side comparison ...But you can't really tell much when watchin it on a PC...
What do you guys mean by washed out colours? Is it very noticeable? Thanks

Yep very noticeable...Like I said my CNN and You Tube Videos...Are blurred and washed out...
I didn't catch this in the Store...Picked it up Monday ...started playin around with it yesterday and today...Never had a Tablet before...Just Smartphones and of course Laptops and PC's...But the colors on my Samsung Epic 4g Touch pop...That screen is amazin...So far very let down with this screen...as far as Color Display...
Takin it back on the weekend and have them show me a few more to see if this is just a bad one or not...I don't want the Ipad or Acer...But I watched Smackdowns on YT between the 300,201 and the Acer 500 and there wasn't a real bad complaint from anyone about the color on the 300 just the brightness...Im satisfied with the brightness on this one but color ...Forgetabout it...
Im hopin its a bad one...the 700 won't be out to June...Didn't really want to wait...This looked like a good deal...Ill just have to wait and see what happens on the weekend...Their (BB) return policy is great
This thread and other comments about the TF300's display piqued my curiosity, so I stopped in at Best Buy to check it out. This BB had a TF300 and a TF101 side by side, so it was easy to do a comparison to the 101, which I already own and am familiar with.
I set the brightness to max on both tablets and loaded the same websites on each, showing a mix of text and color graphics. The display on the 101 looked exactly as I would expect. The difference was that the 101 was notably brighter than the 300, and probably for that same reason the white background to the text was whiter and the colors a bit more pronounced. I'm not sure how much of an issue that would be if I were looking only at the TF300, since it's still a nice screen, but seeing them side by side I would personally prefer the screen on the 101.

Reds aren't really red, kind of washed out orangey red, blues are pale. It's especially noticable with Asus tree wallpaper, the clouds kind of blend into the sky. It's almost like water colors but not quite that bad.
The 300 i'm on now has very nice colors, almost perfect to real life, took some pictures and held my 300 next to the object and it was pretty close to what I saw in real life.
My panel is also cool in color tone, so all the ones I've seen with warm screens are kind of washed out, the ones with the cool tone panels have better color IMO.
All seems good on my end...

Thanx for the replies...Went back to BB yesterday...Finally got to see the 201 in the flesh...when compared to the 300 that was next to it, It blew it away for pic quality and video quality...I definitley saw the difference...I like the 300 don't get me wrong...But my 300 had a problem with display in my opinion...Now the 300 I saw there looked better than mine but not better than the 201...Just my opinion...So I returned mine forked over the $127 more countin tax...and Im a Happy Camper...
I guess I got to go over to the 201 Forums...It was a nice visit here although it was short...

Im sooooooo excited! I have been waiting for the extra $ since the TF was talked about and was finally able to get it today at Toys R Us!
Its charging now so don't want to play with it till its fully charged.
Question is:
What do you recommend I do the first few hours after is being charged? Any particular applications I should try? Should I root right away? If so what Rom should I install? What defects should I be aware of/check?
Any other suggestions will be appreciated ;-)
I know its a silly post, but I kinda got overwhelmed/intimidated the first 10mimutes after I turned it on!
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
You would be wise to never root until you are SURE that you have a good unit.
Check the speaker balance.
Go into a dark room and put on a total black jpeg and this will allow you to look for major light bleeding or white "blobs" in the middle of the screen.
Update to the newest Honeycomb ( 3.1 UNROOTED FOR NOW )
The play with it for a few days. If you are happy THEN AND ONLY THEN should you root and heap the full benefits of the Asus Transformer.
1. Look for dust under screen, light bleed (particularly on corners and the lower left) and dead or stuck pixels. Make sure you ramp up brightness to the max before checking.
2. You might also want to note sound quality (is one speaker louder than another) and overall volume before applying any updates.
3. Now go and check if there are any updates using the Check for Updates option in the Settings.
4. Afterwards, check sound again. Note any changes to overall volume and balance.
5. If by this point you've hit none of the issues so far, I guess someone else will have to help you as to what you should do next. I haven't gotten this far since I had to send mine in to get it butchered within the same week I got it.
If however you find any of the issues above, cry and keep it to yourself or bring it to TRU and hope they do an exchange. Some fanatics on here will tell you QC issues don't exist and you're part of a conspiracy to pressure Asus into adopting better QC.

There are certainly issues with every product out there, including the Transfomer, but I think sometimes they get overblown a bit. Like the light bleed, mine has just a little, but is it enough to bother me? Nope. In fact, from what I can tell almost all IPS screens suffer from some amount of it (look at the iPad 2), it's just the way it is. Mine has been awesome, and I haven't had any major issues, maybe I just took more time out to "smell the roses"

I can accept light bleed if it was about a 2-3mm line of gray on a black background on the edges of the screen but in my case the band was inches, not mm. That's not overblowing it, that's reality. I don't overblow things, I call it as it is. Inches of gray screen on a black background is bull****! It kills the image quality and ruins dark movies.
If you haven't had that you wouldn't understand and of course the people who do have massive light bleeding look like crazies to the people who don't who think they're seeing the same thing we're seeing. I assure you it's different. How do I know? I have a friends unit to use as reference and the level of bleeding on his pales in comparison to mine.

I've compared it to several iPad's as well, it definitely looks great in comparison, and we have all the extra goodies like HDMI out, MicroSD Slot and the Keyboard Dock I have to wonder if the light bleed is similar for all for the IPS Screens, but it just happens to bother some more than others, though I'm sure some did escape the factory with bad screens, like all hi tech devices the more complicated they get the more chance for mistakes. I have the Keyboard Dock and this is my laptop, in fact I sold my laptop to help pay for this, and I haven't looked back, this is just more fun to use PLUS I can leave the keyboard when I don't need it or the extra ports, try doing that with a laptop
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!
Couple of questions:
I have MIUI as my daily Rom on my DInc and really got used to organizing my apps in different folders. Does honeycomb offers such feature? If not, how do you manage to organize your apps?
Also, im looking for defects on my TF and so far i cannot notice any light bleeds. How do i see whether one speaker is louder than the other? They both seem ok, but cant tell for sure.
Thanks!

To be fair the speaker being unbalanced is a software issue (additional zero was added) not hardware. This can be fixed by rooting.

This is something I wanted to bring up for quite some time. Comparing the TF's IPS display to that of a GTab 10.1 or an iPad, the colors on the TF display clearly seem washed out. Since we have the kernel source right now, is it possible for developers to include an option to calibrate the color saturation on the display ?
I see many such color calibration apps for other Android phones, but was just wondering if the kernel source itself is enough to do this for the TF ?
Appreciate other comments on this issue.
tried to use the universal one here but it just forceclosed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745248
I recall supercurio's voodoo kernels incorporated some kind of color fix for galaxy s phones. Maybe we will see something similar coming to the transformer soon?
Is this just an issue with random tf's? I ask cause my screen is beautiful. Watching futurama in HD on my Tf is beautiful. I can't even imagine a better display.

mine is fine as well, i just wanted to mess around with the color calibration, but since my screen is pretty much alright im not that worried about getting the app to work. The tab 10.1 over saturates the color to unrealistic levels. The TF is actually very well calibrated as far as color accuracy, being a photographer i appreciate the TF's more realistic color.

I fully agree with you. I had the 10.1 and the Transfomer together for a couple days. The colors are more natural on the Transformer. At ~90% brightness the TF is a better looking display to me.
my asus transformer prime has a yellowish tint screen
Hi,
I have craved for an asus transformer prime tablet since it was released, i had to save a lot just to finally buy it.
But i feel very disappointed becuase from the day i bought it, i realised its screen has a more yellowish tint, which doesnot match up all the reviews on the TFP i read on major sites like CNET and Engadget.
Please help me out ( what can i do to adjust the hue or is there a software update that can fix it), so that i can enjoy the prime as many others do.
I was surprised mine came already packed with ICS V 9.4.2.21-20120323

As far as the OG transformer, I'll look into it, but I don't know how it'd be done.
Just sold my Acer A500 32gb and bought an Acer TF with 16gb and the kb dock (paying $100 extra in the process). Reasons:
- SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN, I mean wtf, the color depth and fidelity were terrible. Pale, washed out... and while I can cope with that, I couldn't stand looking at the pixel granulation, individual pixels were easy to notice, they looked big and arranged in small squares. I simply wasn't able to tolerate that.
- Battery life..., with what I consider average use I got like 5hours tops even less.
Rest was fine with the tablet, I didn't have problems with the extra weight compared to other tables in the market.
The Asus's offering is way better all things taken into account.
-
Samsung's upcoming 7.7" and 5.3" though with 1280x800 and Amoled will take the cake once they become available.
-
Sounds like a defective tab.... Mine does none of that, has a great screen and amazing battery life.
My Iconia is awesome as well very gorgeous all around. Just like me
Just out of curiosity, what rom were you using, Stock 3.01, Stock 3.1, Stock 3.2 or a Custom? (which custom if so)
I see what you mean about the pixelation, though mine seems a tolerable quality, what really gets me is how you can easily see the capacitive layers of the screen.
All i had before my iconia was a htc desire and the amoled screen on that is quite different to the iconia. the desire screen is obviously nicer im still very happy with my iconia .
I used to use the latest stock OTA update, don't remember was it 3.2 or 3.1.
The tab wasn't defective, one reason might be that there are different batches of lcd panels used but, the pixels on mine were arranged in such a manner that I could see them...check Engadget's screenshots as well, you can notice them there too. Color fidelity, colors, saturation, everything was worse than my first LCD panels from years ago.
I loved the camera, the build, the feel of the tablet, but saving $ on the screen is just ridiculous move by Acer.
*yawn*
Thanks for sharing. Bye.
no need to be rude. devices dont suit everyone equally. they settled with a transformer, its not like they changed to an ipad, that alone is enough reason to not be rude, dont u agree

The battery life seems a bit strange... I get heaps of life out of mine. At least you have a product that works for you now though The TF should serve you well. I was tempted by it, but for me I think the Acer is the better fit, until kal-el tablets start arriving on the scene

Yes, OP is right.

Isn't the Desire HD sporting an AMOLED screen? That's not really a fair comparison.
I don't get it.
Apple Ipad 2 screen resolution: 1024x768
Acer Iconia a500 screen resolution: 1280x800
Many of my friends use the Apple IPad - they all notice that my a500's screen looks a *lot* better when displaying hd video.
Either obvious troll is obvious, or OP does not realize higher resolution = smaller pixels = better image quality.
Or perhaps I am missing something here?
OP's battery life
I have my Iconia running overclocked (1500MhZ vs 1000MhZ stock). Woke up for work at 2:45am today with a full battery, ran system a full hour for music while i got ready for work, battery down to 96%. Hour drive time to work, a500 playing a couple podcasts i wanted to catch up on. Battery at 89% when i arrive at work.
Go on break at 9am, use system at full brightness while on break for a hour. Battery at 80% after this.
Leave work at noon (streaming podcast all the way home. Hit traffic. 2 hours drive time - battery at 70% when i get home (Finally!))
Arrived home at 2 pm - been using my tab for 2 hours solid, screen at max brightness- battery at 66%.
Total: 3 hours heavy use with max brightness set and wifi up. 4 hours use with screen off playing music or podcasts.
If you are only getting 5 hours use either:
A) You have some app installed that is using some insane battery
Or
B) You have a defective unit.
At the end of this post, max brightness set - I am holding a 64% charge. And remember, i am overclocked and at a higher voltage then stock.

I mean, compared to Galaxy Tab or even Asus EEPad ( I also have them for testing !!!). But Iconia feels more solid, and its very responsive - a big plus !! So much faster than the Galaxy Tab.
Is there any custom fix for the screen.........like a kernel fix or something that improves gamma or something like that....
Thanks !
You can't compare A500's color with Transformer or Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Transformer is IPS screen while the Galaxy Tab is AMOLED screen, both are completely different technology from the A500... and as you found out, both of these technologies do offer nicer color than A500's TN technology.

Uh.. just because they're different technologies doesn't mean they can't be compared. In fact, it allows them to be compared.

what I meant is IPS and AMOLED is known to produce richer colors than TN screen, that is a fact - so don't waste time to verify the facts, I haven't seen any TN screens that can beat IPS/AMOLED, no matter how you tweak it.

Hate to burst bubbles, but the Galaxy Tab 10 does not at all have an OLED screen... it's an LCD... they have a 7 inch tablet coming out with Super AMOLED, but Samsung isn't even producing 10" OLED screens yet. It's just a much brighter, more colorful screen, but the colors almost seem unnaturally bright. I kinda like the more natural tones on my A500's screen.

So is trade xoom for note10.1 a good choice?

Sry for my extremely bad English . I really need some suggestion

Its no alternatives to xoom right mow, imho
One thing that caught my eye is that aside from the Quad core processor, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is running on 2 GB of ram!

Same here, thats really awesome.
Somemore there r floating keyboard, s note calculation , floating video player etc, all these are really amazing features
I might pick one up just for the helluvit. I really like my sg note and my xoom, but I've also really gotten attached to the s-pen.
If Motorola doesn't get in gear and release a kick ass tablet to replace the xoom, I think its going to be hard for them to get back into the game.
EOS3 N130 @ MZ604 [XDA HD]
Stock ICS @ SGH-i717R [XDA Premium]
Just saw that the n8000 makes calls. Thia is a killer feature I've been waiting for on a 10.1 tablet. Maybe eos guys can pick one up in a bounty.... hint hint.
If kc, brd or solz gets one, I'm there too.

Originally I was dead set on replacing my Xoom with a Note 10.1, because some of the features sound really useful (such as side-by-side apps, pressure sensitive notes taking, etc).
But after reading the reviews yesterday... well it sounds really disappointing So I am going to wait for the coming software updates and price drops, before re-considering it.
The only thing about the Note that I like is stylus. The rest is pretty meh.
I'll wait another year before considering replacement. The Xoom has plenty of life left in it.
Mine arrives tomorrow... will test over the weekend and report back. I have and still do love my xoom and use it daily, but my GNote has convinced me of the value of the wacom digitizer technology. Should know by Monday whether its a realistic xoom replacement.

Waiting for ur report n pls tell us if the device is suitable for gaming.. in pics the corner of the device looks toothick to hold for gaming
what's this about being too thick... its bezel on the flanks is a bit wider, but that's for the speakers. And its around ~200grams lighter than our xoom.

Just opened the box so haven't even turned it on, yet... but does this pic of the corner edge (beside the xoom corner edge) help you?
Initial impression in the hand is pretty good. Not the tank that my xoom is (have always felt I could use it for personal protection if necessary), but not cheap-feeling either. A bit lighter and thinner than our xoom, but the bezel around the screen is larger meaning the entire device is a little taller and wider than our xoom despite the same functional screen size. I do think the weight loss and less sharp edges will make long sessions more comfortable.

Here is a shot of both from the front. It is a bit larger, but not much.
Early use has been positive. I was a little worried about the screen at first but then realized the autobrightness is darker than my taste in low-light settings. Setting brightness manually, the note's screen is brighter & clearer than the XOOM. It is also a warmer screen than XOOM. I never disliked XOOM's screen, but colors do seem truer on Note whereas they all had a coder bluish tint on XOOM'
The note is quite snappy ... I'm impressed. I've been running EOS JB on my XOOM, so wasn't thrilled about going back to ICS, but this HW makes ICS seem better than I remember it I suspect it will really prove itself on JB,or if we can get Eos on the case.
The coolest thing is that I've written this entire post with my S-pen. I have awful handwriting that meanders from print to cursive & back, but Note had almost no problems translating
Will have more time to put this thing through its paces tomorrow -buta good 1st impression!

tq very much =)
The note 10.1 will be awesome once custom ROMs like cm10 go on there to unleash the true power. Sucks that the s-pen is only fully compatible with Samsung based apps, hopefully app developers will make equivalents that support it.

Well, didnt get as much time to play on it today and dont have but a few minutes to update this thread - will try to add more detail tomorrow.
In summary, though, I am thoroughly impressed with this tablet. Notwithstanding that the EOS JB experience on my Xoom was unbelievably smooth and this ia a (hopefully short-term) step back to ICS, the Note makes it remarkably snappy and smooth.
S-pen functionality is great, and multitasking windows works well... little to no lag.
Battery life has been phenomenal (approaching 40 hrs with 7 screen on)... Ive posted a few screenshots of battery life. No problems with deep sleep.
Hopefully more tomorrow or Tuesday, but the short recommendation is to go get one.
