Has anyone noticed this? Wherever there's something to scroll, web pages, menus etc., the motion is sort of stuttering as long as you keep your finger on the screen. When you release your finger and "throw" the page, it goes smooth. This makes me think that it's not a graphic performance issue, but it's more like if the resolution of the capacitive touch screen was lower than the actual display. I hope I'm wrong and it's software related...
Software related, doesn't always do this.
Edit-
On second thought I am not sure, sometimes it does this really badly and other times it is completely smooth. If we didn't have full resolution touch you would notice it on a multi touch test app.

I think I have found the cause.
Cpu scaling!
Lock setcpu to 1 ghz and it is much smoother.
What is happening is the cpu speed keeps throttling and jumping back to full speed causing problems

Actually...still unsure...ideas anyone?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
"Problems" with CPU speed jumping up and down? Those are not problems but a design decision (jury is still out on whether the implementation is done right) to save energy.
Of course you can crank everything up to the max and never put peripherals or the CPU to sleep, but please don't start complaining when your battery runs flat before the day is done.
They set the ramp down cpu speed timer far too short. This can be modded in a kernel anyway.
Using a multi touch test we have at minimum 600x300 touch resolution, way more then enough to have lag free scrolling.
There's an acer android phone out with only about 32x 24 touch resolution. They manage
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I don't think it's related. I'm experiencing this even with the cpu locked in performance mode. On the other hand, using a multitouch test app, I was able to move a pointer pixel by pixel at what seemed to be the screen's full resolution, so touch res is not the cause.
It's quite annoying cause even if you want to launch a fast scroll of, say, your contact list, you get that initial ugly small stutter... when browsing the internet this ruins the experience even more, since you are likely to keep your fingertip on the screen more.
Dunno about you guys but uninstalling Gesture Search by Google fixed it for me.
Never had that on my phone...

Could be, I had a HTC HD2 and it suffered from that problem alot. numerous videos have been posted on youtube because of it as well.
One possible way of minimizing the problem is to electrically discharge your screen, by putting an electric conductor, such as metal on it to remove and negative/postive ions still hanging around. Read that up somewhere and it somewhat helped my HD2.
Personally i have only experienced once on my Sgs and have not been able to replicate it since.
If you have big fingers that could also be a problem as the touch sensor can't decide on where to locate your finger...
Thank you for your answer! The electrical conductor you mentioned should go somewhere to discharge though... I can't walk around with a ground wire hanging from my phone all the time Plus, I really believe it's software. I know it always goes there but... iPhones have similar technology but they always scroll smooth. maybe it's interpolation we're missing here.
Btw I have particularly small hands!
Discharging it only has to be done only when the problem seems to be worsening. just try not to place your entire thumb on it but rather use the tips of yours fingers, that way it doesnt jerk.
I have to say this problem is pretty consistent, hence not worsening (or improving) whatsoever in any circumstances. It's just not fluid, ah my Touch HD used to be, but that was because of poor GPU (driver); we know that can't possibly be the case here, and as a matter of fact, regardless of load, stuff in the background etc, it's there all the time.
But as soon as you release the fingertip, the "inertial" part of the scrolling just goes as smooth as possible.
So I'd dismiss the electrostatic explanation, it seems like it was a non-interpolated low touch resolution... except that it's not...
Hi Folks, I have noticed the same problem running eclair 2.1 with Ryan's one click lag fix applied (the lag fix did speed it up quite a bit too!). It seems to do it after coming out of 'sleep' mode i.e when I wake it up from blank 'screen saver'. After a few scrolls or taps it starts to smoothen out a bit, but still not as I would like it to be.... Just my observations and sorry I can't offer up any Solutions... Any word if 2.2 update will make things better? Also, does anyone know when the update will hit Australia?
Welcome to android world, iphone users.
The world where not everything is super-smooth.
Actually it might be related to smoothing of touch input. Btw my scrolling is quite ok, but I come from Sybian world, world of lag.

'smoothing of touch input'? could you please expand on this?
BTW - I Never owned an iFone, and don't really go for it's comunistic ways... (although some people take comfort in it! )
Hm, touchscreen sends raw data to driver (noisy, with peaks) to driver. Driver cleans and interprets them.. (unless its done in TS firmware)
I think that more cleaning and smoothing at this stage would result in smother scrolling, but not-so-precise tracking (when drawing, etc).
I'm just speculating here, because I have no real knowledge about this.
OK... Although it seems like there is a delay in reloading to short term memory when coming out of hibernation? Would this sound like a place to start looking? if so, anyone have any ideas on how to manipulate this function?
I saw a review on YouTube in which the reviewer mentions that OP5 has some kind of jitter when scrolling compared to the other Snapdragon 835 powered phone, in this case, the HTC U11. I searched the OP3/3T forums and saw that it is an old problem.
Do you happen to notice something familiar on your OP5 when scrolling thru different apps?

Yes it does and to be honest it's annoying, sometimes it's like a shaking jello effect when scrolling and sometimes there's awful jerkiness and stuttering when scrolling through certain web pages in chrome, have to say this should not happen out the box, i hope the scrolling issue gets resolved or I'm sending mine back.
Got the same, sadly. Hope something can be done about it. The hardware is awesome, but the stuttering is very annoying. I'd expect the experience to be smoother... :-\

It's like the refresh rate is set at 45fps for eg instead of 60fps like a flagship should be, there's a jelly shaking effect everywhere you scroll but some apps chrome for eg sometimes hitches and stutters, not acceptable for this kind of hardware tbh.
I've not had an android phone that hasn't stuttered to some extent in Chrome.
I can say though that mine has improved over the day or so since I've had the phone and currently is very smooth.
Does anyone have an example of a website that is more prone to lag? I'll try it out.

Forcing gpu rendering didn't work for me still the same, open the app drawer and scroll up and down fairly fast you'll see a shimmering effect, also even scrolling up and down in these forums sometimes when the square adverts pop it's stutters like ****, it reminds me of having vsync disabled on my pc that kind off effect, it's like OP have disabled vsync because with it enabled it stuttering even worse like it can't keep up to 60fps, which i find really strange with this kind of hardware, it needs to get sorted fairly quickly, it doesn't do this on my huawei mate 9 or my Nexus 6p, also there's touch latency issues, remember hearing carl pei going on about it in the launch on tuesday, saying they've improved latency when in fact they haven't, if you scroll up and down fast sometimes it's not picking up your touches and skips and just scrolls the last way it detected, I'm very suspicious they new about this problem when they were on about touch latency in the launch.

I have no scroll latency or lag on my phone. Everything is buttery smooth. I didn't change any settings.
I used the oneplus 3t for a while and initially I thought the phone was fast and lag free. However I always used to have a strange feeling that all wasn't as great as it seemed. I use talon for twitter a lot and with the oneplus 3t it was hit and miss at times it would be smooth when scrawling and other times it would lag and stutter. I kinda blamed the app and even sent a few messages to the developer of the app (he never replied lol). I decided to move back to my note 7 (yes it's a fire hog but I love it lol),and well well it was way smother and lag free than the 3t. Am sure you can eventually tweak the oneplus do to what you want and improve lags etc but I just never had the time. Saying that I will keep an eye on this thread as I intend to buy it.
Cant say much about the lag since I havent got my phone yet, but could somebody give an idea of me a try? If I remember correctly, there used to be some accessability settings in Android, some installed Apps where enabled there by default and caused jitter/lag for me, back on my Nexus 5. Can someone test if this could be the cause? (if this setting still exists, no Idea on what Android version this happened to me) - Either way, im scared now that I wont be to happy with the device, lets hope there will be a fix soon.

Yes!!! You see it to. I posted this on Reddit. Everyone check this bull**** out:
Noticed this as soon as I setup the phone. I don't think I've ever seen an AMOLED panel do this. It's almost like it's refreshing each line of pixels too slowly/unevenly during a single frame?
Here's an album of images and video captured from 240 FPS video. View them one after another. The screen refreshes by starting in the bottom left corner and finishes the frame in the top right corner... the icons and text on each line of apps goes out of alignment as I scroll.
Text and elements on the screen stretches out when scrolling down, and smushes together when scrolling up. Straight lines look wavy when scrolling left or right as well!

The people that can't see it are stubborn to it or don't have the eyesight, it's awful, never seen this problem on any screen in the last 4 years or so, as much as i love the phone i can't put up with one of the main features which you need to navigate your phone, it's shimmering like burning sausage, imo crap.

You must have a golden sample then, one thing is for sure it is NOT buttery smooth, the only place this phone is smooth to my eyes is when side scrolling left and right, the rest is a mess to blunt, there's a guy who did a YouTube vid showing the problem...
Here's another quote from someone in the one plus forums with the same issue.
"Some outlets have reported on a "jello effect" on the OnePlus 5 when scrolling through apps, and I have noticed this myself as well. Right now I just noticed that in horizontally scrolling apps (Snapchat in my case) I get a rolling shutter effect, where the bottom of the screen updates the image faster than the top, amplifying this jello effect. V-Sync of course makes display response time slower, but also ensures that the image never gets cut In half. Can anyone else comment on this? I will try to get it on video whenever I'm home from Copenhagen. It can be quite noticable when you know it and think about it" if vsync has been disabled because they have installed a slow touch response screen or something mines going back.
Ok, I see it too. It's very subtle but there is a stretching compression going on when stopping scrolling.
Doesn't bother me in the slightest but here it is in slow-mo. Most obvious on the final scroll-down at the end of the video.
https://goo.gl/photos/mgD8zT3TAYBxmy3Q6
mine is butter
Mine is too. In fact if I showed you it in person, I don't think you'd see it. It's that subtle and I think you really have to look for it.
Can you see it in the video? It's not the jitter as that is just the result of slowing a video down from 240fps. It's a slight wave as it stops.
If anyone is reading these threads and thinks there's a problem with the OP5 - there's not. We all have the same phones here and some people can't even see the effect that is being described.

I did notice it right away. But I was in an impression that it's an animation. Various ROMs lets you set your render animation. Isnt this just it?

I tried multiple apps included and I couldn't duplicate that scroll lag. I saw the video and mine definitely doesn't do that.
Okay, I've done some observations on the scroll lag issues and here's what I know.
- It persists on 8.1 ROMs too
- It mostly affects custom ROMs
- Switching kernels does not fix it
- Max CPU and GPU does not fix it (even OC)
Here's my suspected causes:
- Our touchscreen driver is bad
- Our touchscreen panel is bad
- Included screen protector is bad (anyone have scroll lag without it?)
Tell me if you notice this too, but when I scroll with my finger in the top right edge, I get almost 0 lag when scrolling. Is it possible its the display sensitivity that isn't stable? Do you feel this too? Maybe its other areas of the screen too.
Please share your ideas and thoughts. We really want to fix this issue as the phone would be so amazing if it didn't lag EVERYWHERE.
I think it's a combination of both : bad touchscreen and bad driver's as it seems to affect both stock, Caf and Los . I did a test with an old Samsung note 4 an iPhone 5s and a Huawei p20 Pro and it seems that there are certain "gaps" in the panel that when in usage register touches with a certain latency . This and also the sub par refresh rate. Even the old iPhone/note had better touch accuracy under heavy load.
I guess this is the price you pay for a 150 euro phone. Some corner's will be cut.

Sorry for late reply. Not really hot spots or you could call them hot spots but the are in a H pattern across the display. Also touch accuracy is abysmal.
Now I've installed Flyme OS the problem still persists that and the screen becoming tottaly unresponsive. But the proximity sensor bug it's gone, so altleast that is a good thing.
If they don't fix altleast some of the bugs in 8.1 I'm goona smash this crap phone into a wall

You can replicate this lag 100% of the times with this "method", at least for me. Use your thumb with as much flesh touching the screen and then slowly drag your finger. You can notice the scroll lag in every direction.
Same with me, firstly, I thought it is bug of xiaomi rom, may be this will be fix with custom kernel and custom rom. But when custom rom came to mia1, try so many rom but laggy still there, really disapointed.
It is awkward that seem mia1 is the only xiaomi face with this issue. Redmi 5a - lowest price phone of Xiaomi is fine and MI5x same spec with mia1 doesn't have any complain about laggy scroll.

I discovered that if you have two fingers on the screen there's no lag. So use one finger and hold it, then start scrolling with your other thumb. 0 lag. It's gotta be a driver thing. I've been working on micro optimizing it but its gotta be something with the scanning frequency when there's only one finger. But frequency is a firmware thing and I dont think we can gen a firmware blob without a manufacturer tool. It's also possible it's a voltage thing (which I can set in the driver). I'll keep working on it but I think its definitely fixable.
Hey guys i dont know this problem, just bought one, does it easily notice?, how can i check it?

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Xiaomi Poco F1 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Is it just me, or the scrolling is pretty sluggish on Poco f1?
It doesn't lag or freeze but the latency is pretty high. When I scroll up and down fast, finger moves and the icons or the text on the webpage lags behind by 1-2 cm before it catches up the finger position.
Is it normal. I think it wasn't the case with my previous phone, nexus 5.

For sure they have to optimize their firmware/OS as its not even par with OnePlus 5T smoothness yet. Hope to see a solid update for performance and quality soon from Poco developers / Xiaomi Team!

I think that is mostly due to the Animation Scale set to 1x by default. Turn that completely off in developer settings and give it a try.
This might help-
- Go to Settings
- Go to About Phone
- Keep tapping on MIUI version(For Poco) till it gives you developer rights
- Go back to settings main menu
- Scroll to System & Device sub-menu and tap on Additional settings
- Scroll to the end and tap on Developer settings
- Scroll down to Drawing sub-menu and make the following changes
- Set Window animation scale to OFF
- Set Transition animation scale to OFF
- Set Animator duration scale to 1x

Are u talking about some kind of motion blur during scrolling? It could be because of the displays that xiaomi uses but I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere. Their older phones also had this problem and it is noticeable if u came from a more expensive phone or have one side by side to compare it with. Try having the same page on both and scrolling at the same time. For some people it isn't that noticeable and I was wondering if it's also a problem in this newer phone because that would make sense as one of the reasons why it's cheap. It won't affect how fast things load and I don't think it's a software problem. There are some people talking about it if u do a Google search and it happens on different models. Hard to believe xiaomi would do it paired with a snapdragon 845 though. Makes more sense for weaker processors
Turn off MIUI Optimization, Change value from 1 to 0,5 and wait for newer updates to get my Pocophone F1 smoother then
is about hertz ,the touch display
For SD845 device scrolling performance is definitely terrible i don't know if it's software or poor quality of display but scrolling is no where near my 4 year old Nexus 5
Touch response is very poor. When I swipe left it works as swipe up or down. Sometimes swipe down or up and works as swipe left or right. Very disappointed..you can try it.. Just swipe down the notification bar and remove the notifications one by one and see the action.
Sometimes I didn't touch an area of the display, actually my fingers went over these portion of the display and it works as touch click. Very disappointed.
Is it software or hardware(touch display) bug?

We don't know (yet). All I know is no update has fixed it so far. Tbh, I lost hope it's ever gonna be fixed. 50$ phones have better touch response than this "flagship killer killer". Scrolling and swiping is infuriating on Pocophone... Sometimes when I swipe left it goes right. So yeah... I think everyone has this issue but not everyone can notice it. I just don't know why some people say 'update to MIUI 10, it fixed it for me'. Or 'the latest stable update fixes it' when it CLEARLY DOESN'T.

You have a faulty phone
For me, scrolling through things like settings or my Spotify playlist was very smooth and responsive but especially when scrolling through a WhatsApp chat it felt very sluggish (when I swiped down within a chat, let it scroll by itself and then put my finger down to stop at a specific point. The latency between my finger touching the display and the chat stopping scrolling always felt very high).
This improved a little by going from 9.6.14.0 (i think) to 9.6.22.0 and then quite a lot by disabling MIUI Optimizations.
I still keep MIUI Optimizations on since it makes the UI scale better.
I have high hopes that this is a software problem and will be gone at last with the Android Pie, MIUI 10 upgrade.
Well after installing the custom RoMs , touch is stilla pathetic. I don't feel the smoothness which I used to feel in my one plus 5. so does that mean its hardware fault..?

I think it is most likely hardware problem. Refresh rate is probably listed normally the same as other phones that don't have this problem so it's hard to know for sure

NO!
Just got my OP6T yesterday and I'm getting lots of lag. Mostly scrolling lag when I'm scrolling slow through the app drawer, play store, etc. (fast scrolling is always smooth) I've also experienced lag in general while using the launcher and just doing normal functions. This is my first OnePlus device and I've always heard they are super smooth with no lag and so far this has not been the case for me.
Is my device defective? Is there some known issue I can fix? I don't want to have to return it but I don't want a laggy phone either.
(UPDATE) The cause for the lag seems to be gesture navigation and also immersive mode via a third party app (immersive mode is not a feature within the device but can be accessed by apps even without root). I've been using gesture navigation since I bought the phone and have had scrolling lag the whole time. I switched to the traditional 3 button nav last night and the lag was gone. Another user reported they are having terrible lag issues while using immersive mode but once they disable it the lag is completely gone.
Did you install any apps yet? Note most 3rd party apps are not fully well versed on Android 9.
Try updating to 9.0.5 and see if the problem persist. When I received the phone, I turned animation scale off. You can try that and see if you still notice lag.
You may have a defective one. Mine is extremely smooth. Dare I say it might be the smoothest Android experience I've ever had.

Yes, I've installed my normal apps which is only like 30. I'm not a big app user so don't have tons and all those I use have worked good on pie for some time. I also have a Pixel 2XL and have been on Pie since the second beta last spring.

I updated to 9.0.5 as soon as I got the phone yesterday. I don't want to turn off animations because they are pretty ;'(
Not the lag.. but I definitely see drop frames and jankiness coming from smooth pixel 2 xl

I also have a Pixel 2XL and didn't notice the lags I'm getting on the OP6T. I'm currently troubleshooting to see if I can find a solution.
I have not experienced one time lag as I can remember last days. I updated to latest firmware straight away
I'm on 9.0.4 - not done anything at all with it, and it's as fast as anything. If it's like that out of the box then it sounds like you've got a defective device.
I'm also getting stuttery scrolling on most apps. Came from Pixel 2xl and it was smoother than this. Should I be concerned I have a faulty device? My first one plus phone as well. It's not bad enough to bail on device but is definitely noticable and annoying.
Omg what's goin on in here, i came straight from pixel 2 xl and 6t feeeeels far more smooth than pixel, its blazing fast,
Who is your carrier? Maybe it's something specific to them?

Don't get me wrong. This thing is way faster than the p2xl. Its just when I'm scrolling slowly reading on different apps, it misses here and there. Stuttery scrolling. It seems a little better after the update. I was scrolling on Zedge and it was like it was 10 fps..

I installed ElementalX kernel and so far it seems to have fixed the stutter while scrolling. I'm paying close attention and if it keeps up I'll be returning it for another device. The only reason I'm stressing it so much is one of the main reasons I bought it is because for years the OnePlus devices have been praised for being super smooth, fast, with no UI lag. Lag, frame drops, stutter, and UI faults of any sort bother me greatly. My Pixel2XL has had a bit of lag here and there but overall it's been smooth and pleasant to use so I can't handle anything less.

This is exactly the issue I've experienced. It's only during slow scrolling. I've also had lag in other areas like opening folders and closing apps but it's mostly been while scrolling -- but like I said so far the ElementalX kernel seems to have fixed it.

Just flashed elemental kernal. Will test for a bit and post back.
Did you change any of the settings or all defaults?

I changed all the cpu cores to their max frequency but left the governors default. That is it. Battery life seems the same.
I will say also that I noticed within EX Kernel Manager that the CPU cores were running very low frequencies by default which makes me wonder if for some reason my device had drastically underclocked cores. The max frequency I was seeing on any cores was 1.7GHz.

Yea, I think that's the problem since the cpu is designed to go to 2.8GHz on the main cores. For whatever reason mine were never going above 1.7. I'm hoping some custom ROMs and kernels will resolve this issue.
