Looking for Stock w/o Ads - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi team, I currently have Lineage OS 14.x on my Fire HD 8 Tablet. I noticed that headphones are not working. I'm not sure if it's been fixed in the latest version. Looking for suggestions to get it working. I was thinking of going back to stock rom and removing the ads. Or is there a stock rom w/o the ads?
I searched around the site, but I couldn't easily find a stock rom w/o Ads.
Thanks for your help!

There's a headphone fix on Los14.1 thread that you can flash in TWRP

And for stock, you just download it from Amazon site, it will be with .bin extension, just rename it to .zip and flash in TWRP, if ads persist just use Amazon Toolbox

Or reach out to Amazon and say the ads are offensive to you and your family. Most agents will immediately disable them without a fuss or attempt to impose the $15 USD ransom (charge). Toolbox works best if you have root; otherwise ads will rematerialize over time.

That's a method too, but only if you bought the Fire from account you have access to, for my case it was gift to me from my friend so I couldn't disable ads and I just flashed lineage

Yep - flashing a custom ROM (assuming device is unlocked) is a sure fire way to kill 'dem pesky Amazon ads. Not to mention additional feature/functionality including easy access to the Google Play Store and related apps. I typically run AOSP or Lineage on my Android gizmos but keep a few Amazon devices on (rooted) FireOS that perform dedicated functions (eg: streaming) and will run sideload apps w/o issue.

** No, Root does not allow us to unlock the bootloader. They are entirely different. I personally have not heard of anyone working on that. Most knowledgeable people I have heard say it would require a leak of the keys from Verizon. **

Did you install SU before or after rooting? Or had that problem, stupid me in the antisapation of having root I installed SU last night and after rooting just now could not for the life of me get it to update SU, after multiple reboots I finally uninstalled it after clearing the cache and app settings in app manager, rebooted then reinstalled, then ran root checker, it failed then it asked for root, granted, rechecked, and it passed!

logically, you should avoid any vzw updates. SU may fail, but it still works. try running a rooted app. it will ask you to grant permission. I just removed over 12 apps that vzw forced on my phone.

chainfire needs to update app before well b able to update it.. it still has root and works so be patient.. we cant keep vzw/samsung from patching it on future devices but it will take them a bit of time so id imagine later updates and newer phones yet to come out would be patched.. now we enjoy root until someone down the road (hopefully) gets us custom recovery for custom roms but lets not jump the gun here, we just got root so let the devs enjoy that feat lol

Rename SDM.apk and SDM.odex. to .bak files and VZW can't use the OTA updater anymore. The software updater in settings will be gone too. You will need a file explorer like fx and the root add on for this, it's free.
EDIT: SDM.apk is in the system/app driectory.
Safestrap is next: you'll be able to run custom ROMs but not custom kernels, so TW builds but not AOSP (unless the S5 GPE is built on a TW kernel, as the original 4.2.2 S4 GPE ROM was). I wouldn't actually delete any APKs from your device; just freeze them with Titanium.

Sure, but I cannot guarantee you won't have any issues. I managed to remove a decent amount of bloat apps and rebooted successfully. I will list them below.
- Google +
- Google Books
- Google Play Music
- Audible
- VZW protection
- Messaging +
- Amazon
- Kindle
- Amazon Appstore
- IMDB
- VZW ringtones
- VZW protection and support
- Isis Wallet
and a few more that I cannot remember. I hope this helps.

Two of the more useful features (I believe) are:
1) native tethering -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2768837
2) download booster -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2719582
There's no concept of recovery, so it would involve uploading the files via adb or some other means and running the scripts via terminal emulator/adb
(1) involves replacing framework-res.apk with the packaged copy -- last time I tried to attempt something like that with a live filesystem I ended up with a bootloop I couldn't resolve and had to reflash the stock ODIN, which I don't want to do at this time.
You can also enable the hidden menus via the phone dialer after root -- change /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu to ON

I have not. From the updater script on the 2.1 ODEX zip file on that thread it's replacing these files:
/system/framework/services.jar
/system/framework/services.odex
/system/priv-app/SecSettings.apk
/system/priv-app/SecSettings.odex
I briefly looked through the thread and I don't believe the author of the mod specifically mentioned what the changes he did are. I'd prefer getting the original files from my own phone, extracting/decompiling the contents, making the relevant changes, packaging them back up and replacing them on the phone (after making backups). I'm also lazy, so i'll probably leave that to someone else.

Apparently xposed framework with X Tether module will do it, according to some replies on the thread I linked to above in post #12.

Please help! Too much ads!

Please help! I currently have an Amazon Fire HD 8 6th generation tablet running OS 5.4.0.1. with Google PlayStore and other Google apps downloaded on it. I like it but I also hate it at the same time. When I would download an app I would be bombarded with intrusive ads within apps I would use.
-- Is there a way to permanently disable or delete ads like using Adaway or some other way??
-- Is there a working root for Fire OS version 5.4.0.1?
-- Is there a working way to downgrade and revert to an older rootable OS version? If so is there a link?
--How do I get rid of the Amazon home screen theme?
I know some people were talking about using Twrp/CWM. How do I do that? Is there a link?
If your able to help thanks it's much appreciated.

Newer Android version for Fire HD

Are there any plans from Amazon or from an XDA developer to develop a newer OS running the latest (or at least not the 3 year old version the Amazon insist on running)?
thanks in advanced.

I have answered this exact question before. This is my opinon:
NO
Amazon has no incentive at all to change the base OS, as fireos for them is simply an interface to their tablets to sell more product and services. It would cost them money to update fireos to a newer version and yet would not benefit them in selling more of the products and services. So there is no incentive for amazon to change anything on these tablets.
As far as developers, these tablets all have locked bootloaders, this means there is no way to load a custom recovery like twrp at all. Without a custom recovery it would be extremely difficult to have any kind of custom rom for this device at all.... so again...
NO
You have to remember for amazon this is not a tablet they are selling its a highly customized sales device and interface. We are really EXTREMELY lucky to be able to load google playstore and in the case of the hd10 to have root. Not only wont you get a newer OS more then likely but I am sure amazon will continue to lock down these devices so that you will be forced to stay in the amazon eco-system.
Thanks, that sucks

The problem is any "decent" android tablets are overpriced and used units from 2-3 years ago tech wise. All my research before I got my fire hd 10 led me to the following conclusions:
The tablet market is pretty much dead. It is impossible to find a decent tablet now a days unless you
A) buy an older overpriced used one
B) buy apple (so HUGELY overpriced)
C) Make due with an hd 10 that is rooted and running google playstore
Wanna guess which choice I picked since I am in the fire hd forums?

Newer end devices, most probably the newer HD 8 and HD 10 will get 6.0 or 7.0 (whichever one Amazon confirmed a year or so ago, newer devices will get sometime whenever). Don't expect anything else, tablet wise, to get anything newer than 5.1.
The base OS is Android and it is customized or butchered as I like to call it. They can't block the install of apks without blocking their own apps. Even if they did block sideloading (i don't think you can), it won't stop you from using Silk to download one off apk mirror and installing it through the documents UI. I'm sure they are well aware people but these to use Google apps more than Amazon apps. For them its a silent selling point because you already bought it. Most buyers are already Amazon members and customers. Remember they lose nothing by allowing us to some of the things we can do, even without root. You'll be back to buy something from them again. They pretty much make pure profit off these things.

Yes thats the root method I used but as I said I was on 5600 when I rooted. 5620 is extremely new and I have very little info on it personally though have seen a few posts of people having issues with rooting and also with using nova launcher and widgets.
ONE THING I AM SURE OF NEVER EVER EVER EVER try and downgrade to an older version as if you do it will likely perma brick. As far as the rest if/when you get it rooted I loaded the image from retyre (search for link). This image us loaded via a product called flashfire. I loaded the image that way for 2 reasons:
1) My bootloader is still at 5600 level as flashfire does NOT change the bootloader only boot and system
2) The image was pre-rooted, has xposed built in and got me to the the latest version (5610) WITHOUT having to upgrade my bootloader.
A side benefit of the image I used was it was automatically setup to block all ota updates from amazon. Why, cause once again if the bootloader is updated to 5610 or newer you can not downgrade without perma brick. Thus I wanted to make sure my bootloader NEVER got updated.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/development/tips-tricks-root-t3310569 Have this bookmarked from when I got my tablet, although that's applicable for 5.6.0 and 5.6.1 (iirc). I know they just started pushing out a new FW so make sure you do the offline root method. Hopefully they'll slip up on one of these updates and leave a hole for someone to pop in a bootloader, although I'm not holding my breath.

Good. I have my work cut out for me once I get some free time. Also, someone else responded to my post with the following which contained a link to the same thread that you used - note that this was the 55th posting in that thread. So this gives me some hope that my OS version (5.6.2.0) may be rootable.

All I want to do is root the tablet and put on any version of android or any rom because I want to be able to use google family and can not get it to work in any form with it as a stock amazon fire.
I am comfortable running through all the steps to get xposed and everything else on it but don't want to yet if no other version of android exist for them ATM.

I am running Google Play Store, YouTube, Whatsapp etc on my stock 2018 Fire HD 8. No root, only unlocked bootloader. Search this Forum. There is even a method to root it via Linux.

My First Fire HD 10 (11th Gen) Can It Be Rooted?

Just bought this yesterday and updated it to the latest firmware. I checked around here and couldn't find much on the newer version of this tablet. I see there are custom roms for Fire tablets. I've used the Fire Toolbox already but I would love to root my device and install both twrp and a custom rom on it, is this possible on this table running the latest firmware?
Can any one help point me in the right direction please? Thanks for the help and time.
No current roms, but you can do a lot fir Fire Toolkit to make it as straight Android as possible. Currently though, you're screwed if you let it update to the newest Fire OS version, as you can no longer disable OTA updates and you can't install a custom launcher. If I were you, I'd return it and get a new one. Don't connect it to wifi, and skip initial setup. Then immediately disable updates with Fire Toolkit and install Nova Launcher or another 3rd party launcher.
I was recently in the same boat. Accidentally let it my new HD10 update since it automatically connected to my home wifi (damn Amazon saving my wifi passwords even though I tell them no on every device!). I returned it and got a new one. Made sure to turn off my home wifi before booting up the tablet. At that point, click any wifi network, then cancel when it asks for a password. You can then skip setup and begin setting it up with Fire Toolkit. I firstly disable lock screen ads (which also turns off updates), then register the device to my Amazon account, then complete the other tasks in Toolkit.
Does anybody know if there is work being done on rooting the current Fire HD 10 Plus?
I am thinking about buying one for travelling and Home Automation, but if it cannot be rooted it will probably not be worth buying.

No, you cannot root it due to Fire OS 7.3.

Eventually it will be however for the moment, using Firetool box is the next best thing and so easy to get up and running that IMO beats rooting for how easy it is to use.
How about hard resetting your tablet to its default OS version, install a non-root firewall, block OTA updates and related processes then customize with fire toolbox to have an almost true android experience.. anybody know which files to block? And would this actually worK?

How would you go about hard-ressetting it?
I have several Amazon Fire HD 8s and HD 10's that are exhibiting the issue of not being able to display some webpages due to the out of date Android System Webview. I tried installing the latest version which is 95 but the version that Fully Kiosk reports is 59 (which is out of date). My fire OS is verion 5. How can I overcome this issue?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Noroot firewall from playstore will block all amazon communication including OTA updates. Just allow your browser through the firewall and block the rest except perhaps google play and you will have no further problem.
Just got a fire hd10 and it came with 7.3.something, and quickly did a factory reset so that it doesn't do the updates.
Can I install custom rom on this or not?
