Overall, my S5 is working pretty well, but it has started doing something strange. A few times each day, I get a "Unfortunately, _____ has stopped" message. A few times, I've noticed that "travel wallpaper" is the app that has stopped. I've never tried to use that (whatever it is). I'm pretty sure "Google news stand" or something like that was the app sometimes, as well as other apps.
For a couple months, I've been rooted and use Titanium Backup to freeze some of the bloatware that I felt pretty sure I don't want (all from a list of "safe to remove" apps). I use Greenify on a few apps, but not the ones that are showing up in the error messages.
A week or so before I noticed these errors, I had installed a bad .apk. It seemed sketchy, so I quickly uninstalled it. I ran Clean Master and it found nothing bad. But I'm still thinking I might want to wipe my device. I'd kind of like to go through the process just to do it. I've been doing regular backups with Titanium and I can't think of anything on the phone that I can't restore from scratch.
Is there a best method for wiping and using Titanium Backup to restore?
Edit: "Wi-Fi Direct share" is another app that gets the error message.
Edit: I used Safestrap to backup immediately after I rooted. The phone was stable at that point and for a month after.

Before you wipe your phone may I suggest that you unfreeze everything first, then see if you get the "Unfortunately...." message. If you stop getting that message then it is a pretty good chance that you have something frozen that an app or system needs to use. Wiping your phone and getting a fresh install of apps is always a good idea...if you have the time and inclination to do those type things. Installing apps from a backup is handy, but if you have a bad download/app install you will only be replicating the problem by installing from a back up. This is usually not a problem, but you never know. If you wipe, and have the time, try downloading the apps you want from Play Store to make sure you have the latest/fresh app. Yeah it is a PITA but you can be assured that the apps on your phone are the latest versions.

I'll probably do that when I have a chance. Is there a particular method of wiping that is recommended?
I would like to restore my Nova Launcher home screen settings, Wanam settings, and any other customizations like that if possible.

Doing a Factory Reset is a good way to wipe your phone without touching your system apps. Or, if you have a custom recovery on your phone, you can do a full or partial wipe through recovery. I've used both methods and don't know if one way is any better than the other. You can save your current Nova setting to your SD card and restore after you have wiped. I don't use Wanam so I don't know about that app's settings and restore capability.
Immediately after I rooted, I made a backup with Safestrap. Titanium Backup has been backing up my apps and data.
Should I try to install the Safestrap recovery backup I made a couple months ago?
I did a lot of research before rooting, and so many people said how easy it was, etc. While using towelroot was super easy, learning how to correctly use Safestrap, etc. was not - especially since there were a couple error messages along the way and it didn't work quite how the info I gathered said it would (even the video from the Safestrap app page was not how most people set it up).
Regardless of what restore method you recommend, any info and helpful tips would be appreciated. I'm moving all my photos, videos, etc. to my computer, so there shouldn't be anything on the phone that I could not restore.
I saved my settings in Nova Launcher and Wanam. Hopefully, most of my customizations will restore from those settings - but I obviously all the icons won't return because some of the apps were not installed before the Safestrap backup.

SafeStrap is the only recovery available for a retail S5. You have essentially two options: Do a factory reset which will not remove your firmware or ROM, it will only remove apps and associated cache and data. Many times that is all one needs to "clean-up their phone" and getting back to operating like new. Or, option 2, wipe data, cache, delvek cache, factory reset and flash your backup, if you trust it. If you don't trust your current backup make another one and flash that backup then restore your apps. I personally would do option 2. Make a new backup in Safestrap, then do a factory reset and flash the backup. That will accomplish what you want. You can always replace apps. The most important thing is to make sure you have a backup of your current ROM before you do anything.

Hmm, why is the ROM backup important? Because it's more difficult to get root back otherwise? I was more concerned about restoring my customizations for launcher, etc.

Maybe I misunderstand what it is you're trying to accomplish. Just a reminder-- RULE #1: if you're going to hack a phone (and you already have done that by rooting and installing SafeStrap) always, always have a backup.
Refresh for me what it is you're trying to accomplish. I haven't used SafeStrap in a couple of years, I have a Developer Edition. However, I'll try to help you accomplish what you want without bricking your phone, that is priority one. Even if you loose root, you can always use towelroot again to re-root. If you brick your phone, well, that is another story.

That's the kind of reason I posted this.
I made a Safestrap backup immediately after rooting. Everything was stable then (and for a month or so after).
Basically, I've tried a lot of apps, and one that seemed sketchy recently. My phone started throwing up the "___ has stopped" errors regularly, so something seems wrong. I want to go back to a stable state. I might even not freeze any apps with Titanium Backup for a while to see how it run. There are some apps that are currently on my phone that I won't bother reinstalling. Otherwise, I don't really want to change anything.

Ok, I understand...again, LOL. Yes, first unfreeze anything you have frozen and see if the error message goes away. If it does then you had something frozen that an app or system needed. The trick is going to be discovering what you had frozen that was causing the error. Uninstall (using the stock apps manager) any apps that you no longer use or want.
If the error has not returned, then freeze a few apps at a time and see if the error returns. If it does then you have narrowed the problem down to a few apps. Sorry, there is no better way to go through the "freezing" process. Sometimes it is just trial and error. By the way, what error(app) was stopping. That might help identify what you Don't want to freeze.
To avoid a Factory Reset, you can go into recovery and wipe cache and delvek cache. Do not select/wipe data, system or anything else. Then select reboot phone from within SafeStrap. When your phone re-boots Android will build (optimizing apps) delvek cache. This will not brick your phone, but it will clean it up and get rid of potential problems left over from uninstalled apps. And, you will not loose root.

There are a variety of apps that get the stop error - a lot of different apps. It's not consistent and seems to happen randomly (often apps I've never used). Because of that, I'm tempted to try to go back to a previous state. If you think it's sufficient to clear those caches and uninstall any apps I'm unsure of, then I might try it. However, I'd probably still worry that something bad was still installed somewhere. Maybe the only way to remove all doubt would be to factory reset. Or would my Safestrap backup be a certain way to put my phone back to its state before the sketchy app was installed?
I might try your method first to see how it goes.
If I wanted to use the Safestrap backup, I'm not sure exactly how. Do I open Safestrap and "install recovery"?
I really appreciate all the info. I'm learning a lot here.

No problem, glad to help.
Ok, lets try the safest process first and progress from there.
1. Remove all unwanted and/or not used apps
2. Unfreeze everything and see if any errors occur
3. If no error then you have something frozen causing the problem. If the error still occurs then go to 4.
4. Enter recovery and clean cache and delvek...reboot phone and see what happens
5. If errors continue to occur then do a factory reset
6. If errors continue to occur after Factory Reset then wipe phone and flash your backup
How to flash backup: Go into recovery (SafeStrap), select Wipe and wipe (cache, delvek, data), and do a factory reset. Then, while still in recovery, go to Restore and select your backup and swipe to install the backup. After the install, select reboot.

I defrosted everything and still got errors.
I entered recovery, selected Wipe, then Advanced Wipe. That gives me options for "Dalvik Cache", "Cache", and a few others.
You said "delvek" where Safestrap Advanced Wipe says "Dalvik". I don't want to risk anything. Can you confirm that I should wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache?
Yes, wipe cache and dalvek cache

Disclaimer: this has nothing to do with the quality of the program i was working with and everything to do with MY lack of knowledge of android systems and what I am doing.
purchesed: 8/23.2014
my att gs870a
rooted: towelroot
xposed module: donkeyguard
the last few things that i had done was to install ABP for android and then downloaded donkeyguard. i checked the box in modules for Xposed installer and it required a reboot. i rebooted device and it starts booting up and gets to att screen and stops.
boot loader is set to freeze most of the automatic updates including KNOX
i have root cloaker in place
Xposed privacy guard in place
i can reboot into manual holding up arrow, home and power keys
from there i dont know what to select: restore factory defaults?
please help
i can try to provide any extra information that you may require and i have more rooted updates on device. please take pity on a NOOB. i dont claim anything other than sometimes a little knowledge is dangerous.
thanks

sorry that this is my first post. i have learned alot form this forum. this is my first android device. i had been on using BB 9930 up to now.
hi again
here is what i was able to work thru. hard boot holding vol/home/power into manual. at this point i was able to get kies3 to read device. reset to factory options and reinstalled last backup. phone is back up and running/rooted and reloaded with the exception of a couple of the last programs i had installed. now for the question:
it seems to be running slower than it was before. used TB to refreeze a number of apps and i was hoping it would show me if there were dup's. i am thinking this could be causing the slower operation. have used Antutu to check it against prior to brick. any thoughts on what might be causing it?
thanks in advance

My problem is simula to pjciii, after install the donkey guard and phone gets brick but I just only need to reset cache partition and reinstall the xposed, I just simply don't use donkey guard, voila, nothing happened to me again
So I think I may have gotten maleware from trying to update my pornhub app. Yea yea I know I know but its that time of the month for my wife and well the rest isnt needed lol. Honestly im not even sure if thats what caused it as ive had the app for about a year now and never had a problem. I did download some new keyboard & themes before all this started so those might be the culprit though I doubt it. Now all of a sudden the phone is installing so many random apps, multiple lock screens, is resetting itself, freezing, and acting all types of weird. Its not just porn related stuff its installing either im getting stuff for clash of clans, travelocity, money something, solitaire, etc. I was able to get it hooked up to my computer to try and manually remove stuff but im not finding certain apps like the travelocity & solitaire and going through phones app manager doesnt allow me to uninstall them even though they are present. I am also seeing little android icons next to some things which are named pornclub which is what makes me think it was the pornhub app.
Please for the love of everything help me get my phone back to working normally. Would flashing the phone work since a factory reset did nothing? I did put the phone in safe mode and was able to clear the cache of some of the apps which seemed to have taken them out but it did nothing for others even though there were no uninstall options.
Did you reset using stock recovery? Sometimes, stock recovery is needed to wipe data, cache.

Use the odin tool to reflash every thing. If it is a virus I'm 99% sure that'll get it.
Flashing with Odin will not always wipe the data partition; therefore, it is a good idea to perform a factory reset before booting the newly-installed rom for the first time.

Usually, partitioning is required if Odin can't pull the partition table from the phone.
Which bootloader is on the i337? Is the phone the att version of the s4?
Did you delete the folders on your phone's internal storage before you did a factory reset? Sometimes it doesn't delete everything.
I'd start by plugging the phone back into the computer, delete all the folders and files on the internal storage and do the factory reset again. See if that helps. I'd also make sure to not have the phone restore apps when you do the initial startup.

Hi! I have too such problem. Only I don't know that my children set. The only way to get rid of a virus it to reinstall completely the Android. You need to pass in a subject about your phone and to esteem as to reinstall the Android.
Hi all,
First time poster, so please excuse me if this is not the correct section.
I got the S7 Edge, absolutely love the thing. As a semi-experienced smartphone user, i have used a load of devices, and this one is my favourite!
Unfortunately, on Tuesday past it developed an issue. I receive an error that says "Unfortunately, <app> has stopped". Now the <app> can be Google Play Services, Camera, WhatsApp. You name it, any third party or system app, i get this message one after the other and then the phone reboots.
I proceeded with a factory restore, on the first screen of setup where i select my language, the errors started again. I noticed you could clear the cache from the boot screen so i done that, restored again, same problem.
I am now getting a replacement device, but i cannot for the life of me figure out what is causing this? Is it a corrupt memory module? Is this an issue experienced quite commonly? I'm really not sure, so i am here for expert advice.
Thanks,
Skyco
Yeah, questions go in the Help section. Not a big deal--a mod will move it there shortly.
Did you do the factory reset in settings or recovery? It shouldn't matter since either way should wipe the cache partition.

I performed a factory reset through both ways, first i selected the factory restore options through settings. The second time, after i wiped the cache partition i booted the phone up and manually selected the factory restore.
The next thing I'd try is using Odin to re-flash the stock ROM, but that won't be necessary since you're getting a replacement device.

First, go to http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and get the firmware for your device and region. Dial *#1234# to find the firmware/CSC you're currently on.
Download Odin here and follow the instructions for flashing the ROM.
Since the ROM is made for your phone, there are no risks flashing it. If you try to flash the wrong ROM or do something wrong, it will simply fail.
Moto G4 xt1622 retgb unlocked and rooted with several root apps like twrp, TiBu, File Manager, terminal etc.
Every time I select 'Settings/Apps', Settings force closes with the error in the title. If you google this error most answers tell you to open settings/apps and clear cache for various programs - a bit of a problem for me because opening settings/apps is impossible. However I have tried many things - clearing cache files from within TiBu, wiping the cache partition from twrp, reinstalling anything to do with 'Settings' from Tibu, flashing two different backups from twrp, one of which was taken of the stock phone as soon as I got twrp working , I have even tried a full factory reset - nothing works, the error is always there.
I don't know when this started, so I can't tell you what I was doing at the time, and if it is of any interest although settings/apps doesn't work, 'App Info' still does. Also every other section within 'Settings' works normally, no errors whatsoever, it is only 'Apps' that causes the force close.
Is there anything else I can try?
Edit. Forgot to say, it is stock marshmallow 6.0.1, no custom roms.

Good call, but unfortunately I have already tried that - safe mode won't start, it just gets to the Moto logo screen and no further.
Thanks anyway.
Managed to solve this problem for myself. Mainly thanks to chainfire (for producing flashfire) and no thanks to the originator of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/help/xt1622-uk-sim-free-stock-firmware-oem-t3448913 who suggested that it is safe to delete third party apps from the /root/oem/app folder (even though these are apps are not even remotely relevant to my locale). I am not blaming the originator of course, it is my fault for listening to him (especially since he no longer owns the phone in question). But let me warn everyone that you CANNOT delete files from this source - however irrelevant they seem to be - without consequences.
Why didn't reinstalling a TWRP backup solve the problem?
Because TWRP does not backup the /root/oem partition. Luckily flashfire does, so a simple reinstall of that partition and 'Settings/Apps' came back like magic.
I am now off to add my thoughts to the thread in question and to do another flashfire backup.

So you restored a backup that you luckily made with Flashfire before your settings/apps stopped working? That doesn't really solve the issue if someone doesn't have a Flashfire backup, does it?
