Hi,
I'm considering buying an SPV M500 (HTC Magician) and I need to know how many ways the small central button is ? I had a short playin a shop and it seems to move in all directions, but I need to know how many distinct direction notification messages WinCE receives for this button so I can determine which direction it moved in ? Basically 4-ways is not enough I need it to have 8-Ways.
Also, can anyone tell me what button-press notification messages are associated with this button ? (The button I am talking about is the small joystick-like affair central to the 4-way rocker at the bottom of the M500)
Thanks for your time,
Mike
it looks like 4 buttons to me - produces a normal wm_keydown.

Does this mean there's no access to diagonal movements ?
Thanks,
Mike

I meant to say in my last post that you don't get Joystick notifications unless you call joySetCature() first, were you doing this when you tried the diagonal movements ?
Sorry to pester you like this...

Its not really a joystick. There is a 4-way rocker and then that central part is separate and it goes down to confirm selections.
I don't get any diagonal whatsoever on the rocker. Just 4 ways.

Oh, I didn't understand that - I thought the central part was a joystick but from what you say it's just a simple button.
Thanks,
Mike
Nope, just 4 way switches with a separate nipple action button in the middle.

It works on my Vairo...
If you blow IE up to full screen, the volume buttons allow you to scroll up and down the screen

Strangley enough I keep for getting about that .....
That been said I did find ( before I knew about this function ) that my thumb wanted to go up and down when surfing just like when I use a mouse.... so I guess you have the choice now - ergonomically this seems a little easier to use.

I'm a fan of the d-pad especially when browsing in landscape (which is most of the time). It just seems natural to use your right thumb to scroll up and down. I rember someone posted on HoFo (i think) that it was un-natural to have the keyboard slide from the left and not the right. But now having the device in hand I think it would be much more awkward having it the other way.
Does anyone know how to change the increments that the volume changes by when using the volume buttons. They increase/decrease too much for me (increments too large). I know you can use the screen but when using the buttons you don't get this granularity/smaller step in volume

i moaned about this a while back, it's dumb, but no one seemed to agree
Use your finger ? lol
You can also change to the "sense music volume slider" (the green one with smaller steps) by reading a little here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=616917
(it doesn't work in all applications though, but most!)
I have to agree, the steps are to large. I allways have to take my phone up and use the finger to adjust it to where i want it. I know ppl say "use ur finger etc" but since the buttons are there it should't be necessary to use ur finger.

exactly, i've used my finger to bring the volume up, why do i then have to use another finger to adjust it, its balls is what it is, balls lol
Folks, I looked at the posting that was provided and it offers another screen control for the volume. What I find strange is that with all the expertise on this forum all the great Roms, Cabs, and other ingenious registry tweaks etc nobody has found a way to modify the increments (which are obviously there) to be made available to the physical volume controls.
I suspect this is because it hasn't been investigated by many as it has not been seen as something in demand. However I would like to say that it is in demand and I'll give you my reason for its request. I have my device in the car in a phone holder and when driving I wear headphones (not HTC headphones). I often need a more granular ability to change the volume through the physical controls without looking at the screen so I can keep my eyes on the road.
I am sure there are many more instances such as this where people need this.
So if there is anyone out there that can help I am sure there would be many more people than on this thread that would give thanks once such a method is discovered.
hmmm...nobody any idea how to get the volume steps smaller?

I agree that the steps are also too large! I cant' seem to change it to smaller increments.
Bump. +1
Just seen this. I often use the volume rocker when my phone is in my pocket, or when I cannot look at the screen. 1 bar increments please!
please.. we really need this..
Bumpation. This would be extremely helpful, especially when listening to music.Or ever.
... +1!
+1. Still no one found it out

Have any of you actually tried it?
The lack of trackball/D-Pad is IMO one of bigger cons of X10. Maybe one could use the volume key to scrolling the menus and webpages? I think, it could be possible... For exemple, FBReader, installed on X10, does use this key to scrolling pages. Do you think is it any possibility to do it?
dolphin browser uses vol keys to scroll up and down...
What is wrong with using your finger to scroll?
Those trackballs, joystick, dpads, etc are just another point of failure in a device.
The less buttons, the better.

Is there any way to remove the magnification buttons in the lower right hand corner of the browser?
I never use them... 2 finger zoom is much better. The buttons cover things up that you sometimes need to click. It's especially annoying when the thing you need to click is all the way at the bottom of the page.

I know that Cyananogen's mod removed it on the G1. I don't know if there's a way to do that with the Samsung's browser. but you may want to check out Dolphin HD. Amongst the first apps I downloaded after getting the Vibrant.
