Strangley enough I keep for getting about that .....
That been said I did find ( before I knew about this function ) that my thumb wanted to go up and down when surfing just like when I use a mouse.... so I guess you have the choice now - ergonomically this seems a little easier to use.
Terran

I'm a fan of the d-pad especially when browsing in landscape (which is most of the time). It just seems natural to use your right thumb to scroll up and down. I rember someone posted on HoFo (i think) that it was un-natural to have the keyboard slide from the left and not the right. But now having the device in hand I think it would be much more awkward having it the other way.

Left hand scroll bar in IE?!

Does anyone know if there's a setting to change the scroll bar from right to left in IE? I looked around but no joy. Thanks lads.
Other than using the unit upside down, I dont think this is possible! I am assuming that you are left handed ?
Nigel
It would be a nice option, not just for Universal, but for Win Mobile in general. I am left-handed, and the vertical scrolling is a PITA. I can not see where I am scrollling to because my left hand is covering the screen, and sometimes even accidentally touching it & activating links.
Same problem here Bill. Anyway, maybe someday Microsoft will make something for us the left handed ones. And thanks for the great tip veletron. lol (I can actually do more or less the same things with both hands but fot this I rather use the left.)
Couldn't you use the scroll buttons instead?
I'm working on something that could be hacked into assisting this, but it'd be a bit of a cludge.
If there's a need shout out and I'll see if I can get around to it.

I have tried using the scroll buttons, but they don't really scroll, rather they jump from link to link (in PIE) which resulsts in very jerky screen movements, and that is not very useful for me.
Then I tried a registry hack mentioned on another forum to make the button do real screen scrolling, but when I tried to use it, the device froze, and sent me to Hard Reset H*ll.
Ideal for me would be in PIE would be scroll bars on the left and buttons that really scrolled. Actually scroll bars on the left would be nice in every application.
It is not a necesity for me, but the bar on the right is an inconvenience --mainly in PIE.
Lefty here as well dude. Would be great to have a less discriminatory device
The worst thing is, that when you use the scroll bar with your left hand, you can't really see when to stop since your hand is covering most of the screen.

Remap F11 Key

There is no F11 key on the Shift, which is very annoying for full screen browser operation - can anybody suggest the best way to fix this please?
I use firefox, and there are several plugins for use with smaller screens, which shrink or remove the menus and give you an onscreen icon to switch to fullscreen.
More info on remapping keyboard layouts via the registry here -

Thanks, I use FF too, with LittleFox and FullerScreen addons. There is no on-screen button for full screen though as far as I can see?
Fullerscreen gives me a small icon at the bottom right of the browser window, which switches to full screen when clicked.

I understand your pain.. FF is so bad in full screen ... but there is a button in IE to go full screen without using the F11 key ! you just need to press "tools" and then "full screen" and it's ok ..isn't it ?

Yes that's true, but what about coming back from full screen?
Move the cursor to the bottom of the screen, the toolbar pops up again.

It's not that easy.
With my fingers I cannot get there. So I need the pen.
And even with the pen in the upper corner it does not always work nicely.

Realize that, with such a small screen, you continuously switch from full to normal IE screen.
F10 would be great for me.

you know... when I will have the shift .. I will keep IE in full screen and use alt+tab (or flip 3D) to switch between windows.. and never come back to non-full screen.
why do you need to come back in normal screen ? alt-tab and flip3D are not enough ?

Maybe that's not such a bad idea at all.
You know. Working with normal screens, I am not so much used to shortcuts. I use to click the toolbar down there to select other things.
And now... Alt Tab...

X1 vrs Diamond: real-world issues

It´s been a month since I "upgraded" from Diamond to the X1
Overall I am very pleased with the X1, BUT:
1.- I miss the smooth (flat) screen edges!! Corners are difficult to reach with my thumbs in the X1 because the screen is depressed from the chassis. The diamond's screen was flat with the chassis, thus making it very easy to press/touch icons in the corners
2.- The VOLUME keys should be located at the left, not the right (IMHO)
3.- I miss the circular touch control from the diamond: it let me zoom/pan very fast in excel and opera (circular finger movement around the central button). At least a "jog dial (p800-esque?) would have been nice...
4.- It's easy to press the "panel" button (wrongly) to answer a phone call !!
5.- Having a hardware "back" button was a plus in the diamond
6.- The "power" button is too hidden.
7.- The mini-USB connector is located at the natural left finger position. It should be ergonomically positioned down the phone ??
8.- Regarding the HW keyboard, I miss a couple of extra keys from the TyTN (dedicated CTRL key, windows context menu key, those two "softkeys" up there... etc) and I find the first row of keys too close to the phone body, making it difficult to type in the upper row
9.- Sony's standard panel is cool but dull, TouchFlo 3D was VERY USEFUL and practical... I got so used to doing everything with my THUMBS instead of the stylus...
Anybody else has noticed/missed these hardware/design issues ??
I know this is Sony's FIRST WM PDA phone
Hope any Sony engineer is reading this post
ad 1. We discussed this topic before. A few users are with you opinion and a few users (including me) like the recessed screen because it protects the screen from scratches and I haven't got any problems with pressing anything until now.
ad 2. I never had a phone with the volume keys on the left. I think they are okay where they are. Good to reach, either you hold the phone in the left or the right hand.
ad 3. I don't know the circular touch, but it sounds interesting.
ad 4. What thumbs do you have?
ad 5. The touch button is okay for me. If not, you have the two buttons below the screens to configurate.
ad 6. The power button is perfect, because it wakes up the phone and therefore it has to be hidden. It shall not be pressed unintentional while the phone is in my pocket.
ad 7. Then the phone could not be charged while it is in a carholder. Most carholders are closed on the bottom so I'm very happy with the layout while navigating with the X1.
ad 8. A bigger keyboard would make the writing easier but the phone bigger. It's a good compromise in my opinion. I got used to the keyboard and now writing's very fast.
ad 9. That's a matter of taste, really! Let me quote myself:
The panels are great. With the SE-Panel you have everything you need in one panel -calender, messaging, weather, shortcuts aso...
You don't need to change pages like with the touchflothing. TouchFlo is one of the reasons for me not to buy a HTC phone.
I now have the SE Desktop Panel with everything I need, additionally a fullscreen weather panel if I want to know more about forecast, windspeeds and whatelse, one panel for everything that's multimedia and one panel is for the navigation software TomTom which works great with with the internal GPS

Sorry to say that, but I like these "issues" and, as you can see, I have my reasons. But each user has its own pros and cons so the "perfect" phone is not going to happen
I too moved from a diamond to an x1 nearly a month ago, overall I think i prefer the X1.
my previous windows mobiles all had some kind of hardware keyboard, be that a full qwerty or dialpad,
(SPV c500, C550, C600, HTC wizard, HTC TYTN)
I really struggled at first without the keyboard,
I then got really annoyed with how dirty the diamond touch screen got from typing,
it also got VERY scratched because of the flat touchscreen, which i never experienced with previous phones,
yes the X1 has its little quirks, but I got to say its either equal to or better than any HTC device i know of, even htc never get it 100% right...
cheers
Steve

Panels sux (actually) just like touchflo.
I've used touchflo in other devices and always end disabling it.
anyways, at least with panels we have a nice facebook one... let's hope more come soon.
10: I always cover the loudspeaker with my fingers while holding the X1. Would have been better position on the back- or downside of the device. But maybe i could just drill a hole....
Ah and
11: First touch resonse works on the Diamond, the X1 just brigthens the screenlight and you have to click again.
1. The screen design on the X1 is better, its too exposed on the Diamond.
2. Not true.
3. I like the joystic on the X1 better than the "wheel"
4. I have mapped my program launcher to the panel button + I dont have fat fingers
5. Not in my opinion, I found it rather useless. HW softkeys are much more usefull
6. No way, its better than in Diamond
7. USB connector is located in little bit weird place, but use your phone on landscape while connected, how does it sit now?
8. What you mean TyTN had CTRL, you mean you had Touch Pro not Diamond or TyTN? CTRL missing from the keyboard is disadvantage. Coming from TP I found the upper row to be close to screen at first, but now I do not experience this problem anymore, probably got used to it
9. I dont even have panels installed, or even TF3D
As you see most of these are just opinions...
One thing you did not mention is the magnetic stylus holder in the Diamond and Touch Pro... But you also did not write any of the pro's that X1 has over those devices...
I had Diamond and Touch Pro and I do prefer X1 over them... Only big thing we are missing is a stable and tweaked rom... Dutty's comingggggggggggggggggggg.....
What people seem to be forgetting is that you couldn't make a phone with a flush screen and a metal housing.
The Diamond / TP does a little vibrate when someone picks up your call, am i right? (I'm not a Diamond user)
That is a VERY handy feature in my opinion. Would've been great if that would be possible on the X1.
I have a Polaris/Touch Cruise/Orbit 02, and also got an X1 a couple of weeks ago. I really miss the scroll wheel from the Polaris as well as the Cube/touchflo. Navigation for me was much simpler. Maybe it's just the usual case of configuring Window Mobile to personal preferences. I've installed HTC Home flike I had on the Polaris and this has made things easier.
I Also find the non-flush keyboard a problem, especially when typing on the screen keyboard. On full qwerty keyboard I find it difficult hitting the keys on the left or right edge of the screen.
I remember when I got the Polaris (after having a Hermes) I had to change settings/software until I was happy with it's operation/navigation. Hopefully, it'll be the same with the X1.

A dedicated weather panel ?? Sounds great. I'm searching for it right now
And yes you're right: matter of taste (and use).
Don't get me wrong: I am writing my oppinions to make this phone EVEN better. As I stated before: I am overall please with the phone, I've have them all ("near" all ) and the Xperia is my best phone ever.
Matter of choices and tastes of course, but I wanted to know if somebody shared my thoughts about that minor "issues".
Regarding panels, I think it is a fresh new idea with great potential.
1.- A "camera" panel would be OK (how about a panel that turns your phone into a full Sony Cybershot digicam?? )
2.- A GPS panel would be OK too
3.- More customization options for the strandard Sony panels would be even better !!
I would have preferred the screen flat too, it doesn't need more protection as I keep it in a soft pouch. Besides I find overall its LESS protected as the dirt that gets stuck in the recessed screen is more likely to get wiped across the surface repeatedly before you actually get it removed. It also makes the grease buildup extremely hard to clean off.
My other gripe is the keyboard. I had wished the whole phone had been a little bit wider so that they keyboard was more like my Wizard. Sure you get used to the screen being so close to the top row but it does slow you down. When I go back to my Wizard I can ALWAYS type easier and quicker because the keyboard is more spaced out.
The rest listed are none issues for me. I may even like the panels in the end as I am going to play with the SDK.
haha the funny thing is that the x1 is made by HTC
What's so funny about that?
There has always been a difference between one HTC device and another. In all other respects the Wizard was rather underpowered compared to other HTC devices at the time and it was/is rather chunky. Also technically I own a T-Mobile MDA Vario, its just from visiting these forums I learnt about updating the ROM to WM6 and that its a HTC Wizard (WIZA200 actually) in a T-Mobile branded shell.

The X1 has been designed by sony ericsson, build in cooperation with htc and produce by htc.
so it's not a made by htc . Sony got an idea and ask one of the most experienced winmo company to make it. And they are not so pleased with htc they have stopped their partnership with them. Seems they reproach htc to have underpowered x1 software and got a lot of production problem with them.

N1 Major complaint

Power button to wake up then slide to unlock, this is horrible, not intuitive and actually very difficult for me to do in my good hand (left, m righty) and near impossible to do in right hand. Man i miss MT3G duoble click menu, anyone know if I can set A double trackball click? (putting it to sleep sucks too, hope the "proximity sensor" works)
Second complaint (existed with MT3g before cyan) home screen no landscape
Third (lol) I miss the app drawer
Fourth (man I know) can we get a full screen (home screen) widget that is phone dialer a la iphone so I can quick swipe to it since there is no phone button.
I look the phone and performance but honestly at this point I will probably get drawed until so of these can get fixed, I am going to stick it out and see if I can get used to it, but its been 9 hours now and not fond the "ergo"
Let me know if you have ideas, solutions or are willing to make an app hehehhe
Hahaha, I think I like every function you mentioned. To each his own I suppose...
My only problem (if it can really be called a problem) is with the push the top power button to wake the phone. It feels awkward to me. I wonder if the unlock function can be remapped to the trackball?
Yeah to each his own, the Iphone button to wake (which would be similar to trackball) can easily be done with the index/thumb hold the power button requires a cradling and sadly its difficult to contort my hand that way.
The app drawer, i dont know, i was much faster to scroll in before and the new 3d thing has a bounce back (ie it locks to 4x4 icons never halfway at top) throws off the quick flick and click for me at least.
I would love the left most home screen to just be the dialer screen flicking with thumb across screen is easier then finding icon and clicking for me at least
MMMV lol but i think others may like these things too
david, me too, actually that's my only "major" issue the rest were nits i had to pick.
lol also, the new app thing is jolting to the user experience, the rest of the home is swipe, swipe down for notifications, swipe sideways for home screens then click for apps. its weird, maybe i was only one that dragged the old draw up and down instead of clicking the tab....
The real problem with the top button is its lack of feedback. It doesn't "click". Still works though
1. I gotta admit... I don't like where the power button is. I usually hold the phone with my left hand while I use my right to swipe or press. The power button is right where I would normally hold on to the top of the phone. Its taking a conscience effort to change the way I hold it, so eventually it won't be a big deal.
2. I also agree about the homescreen. I use handcent, and if I am on the home screen when I recieve a popup, I can't turn the phone to landscape to use the bigger keyboard to post a quick reply. That is frustrating to me.
3. The button works fine for me. I kinda like it.
4. I don't care either way for a widget that lets you dial. I mean, hitting the phone button seems to work pretty well for me ( I haven't used an Iphone to know what you mean by this).
Overall, the speed is more then enough to make up for any shortcomings. The power button issue is one that has actually really bothered me. The oversaturation of colors, especially on apps like The Weather Channel has slightly bothered me. Other then that, I really like the dialer on the phone. As much as I liked wysie's contacts, the new dialer is freakin great. But I can't really complain. Its been a nice phone to have so far. Really nice. I just wish the Polar live wallpaper actually worked.
You will always be able to nitpick, but right now I'm sort of reveling in the fact that I now own the best phone the world. I didn't like the iPhone this much when I got it around launch.
maybe a 1x2 icon for dialer like the same icon from the dial pad the big green phone as a widget? lol

Yeah, this is a BIG beef for me. I find the new app menu klunky as all get out. The label text on several rows of my menu are overlapping/corrupt, and I find it realyl tricky to scroll to the end of the menu quickly due to the way it "snaps" onto rows. Again, I hope Cyan'd firmware will revert this to sanity.

I don't use widgets, but I for one don't miss the phone buttons. Why should the phone app get preferential treatment with it's own hardkeys. *
][
* Yes, yes, I know the smarta$$ answer is "because it's a phone".
well i did a little messing around with remapping keys and wasn't able to cut my phone off, but i did make my power button into a trackball pressed button lmao.
right now, from the way it is looking, there is not an incredibly easy to make the trackball pressed (DPAD_CENTER) wake the phone up without sacrificing a fair amount of usability I will try and play with it some more later.
The files I was changing were both in /system/usr/keylayout/
mahimahi-keypad.kl and
qwerty.kl
I had to make changes to each of the 2 for it to stick. Maybe someone can take this info and run with it. I also had to reboot after pushing the files for it to take place.
The only thing that really bothers me is that one has to remove the battery to remove the SD card.
That is unlike all the other Android phones I know of. (T-mobile anyway.)

Never had an iphone, but I rather like the setup. Assures me that I'm not wasting battery life with it on in my pocket. If the touchscreen woke up on press, sure it might not unlock but it'll still be lighting up all the time.
On earlier hardware, other than the END button (which I suppose became the sleep/wake button), you could press menu (which would take you to the lock-combination screen, or the home screen if you didn't have a lock-combo) and the back button would also serve to wake the phone, you still had to use the END button to sleep.
Has any of you tested if menu or back will wake the phone?
they are touch sensitive on the nexus, so they are definitely a no-go

I sort of agree that the power button placement is awkward but I like the slide to unlock screen to help avoid pocket dials. It would be nice if there was an option to turn it off for those who are bothered by it.

That is actually a good idea.

Stupidities revolving the s7 keyboard

Hi guys, I just got a tab s7 recently, I've had some time testing around , especially the keyboard, for which I can tell, is a whole disaster!!! There are SO SO SO MANY problems about this things:
- Cant play games without keyboard mapping apps (I know, android limits, but it still sucks)
- No uses other than typing (cant pause, forward, backward, bla bla bla in ytb and other vid playing app, so annoying)
- Screen flashing when using the arrow keys to choose elements on home screen ( is this some sort of feature or something?)
- Stupid trackpad which is laggy af
- No F rows, so instead of Alt+F4 to exit, now it must be Alt+Fn+F4!!
- One more stupid thing about this is the screenshot button, which I find it another annoyance, and I accidentally press it not once, BUT SO MANY TIMES!!!
THEY SHOULD REALLY HAVE SOME SOFTWARE TO CONTROL THIS KEYBOARD'S BEHAVIOUR!!!
I just got the keyboard cover yesterday and on the whole I like it but I do agree it could be a lot better. The touchpad is not what I had hoped for and does lag pretty badly. I also wish that I could reverse the scrol direction on it and that it had more geatures, it seems odly limited for such an expensive accessory!
you can always return it.
the s7+ keyboard cover is much better in quality than the s6's one. the fact i dont have to worry about "sticking" the back part on the tablet is a big difference. the keybed feels nicer and so does the trackpad.
i wish I could buy the back without the keyboard. Love the kickstand, hated the keyboard and the price.
I think Samsung should be ashamed of releasing this accesory at this price point.
I used Microsoft Type Covers for years. It has better touchpad, backlit keys, the keyboard can be lifted towards the tablet to give you a more comfortable typing posture, and it costs way less than Samsung's keyboard cover.
I have the S7+ with the Keyboard Cover and it doesn't even closes well (the cover slips down when it is in an standing position, causing the screen to wake unintentionally), It lacks backlight, the touchpad only clicks towards the bottom (clicking at the top of the pad takes a lot of force) and dosen't provide a way to lift the back side to inprove the typing position. This is a really bad designed product and, of course, it lacks the quality for the price tag.
That said, it is almost woth it just for the back cover with the stand and the pen holder.
I really don't reccomend it as a keyboard.
I have no issues you're describing. Works fine for me...

Most games a touch optimized. Has nothing to do with the keyboard...

Not sure, the keyboard has all these shortcuts on the "F" keys... Volume, Forward/Backward, etc

That's strange... For me F keys are set by default. I need to press FN to actually trigger the extra features blow F keys.

That's true. At the same time, it's a function I use a lot when composing an email... So eventually you'll get used to it.
IDK, for me it's a great keyboard cover.
I returned mine for one reason. For that price it needs to be backlit. Otherwise it was fine
Can only partly agree on the OP. I also have the S7 with the keyboard cover.
Yes it lacks the F#-bar, same for the multimedia short cuts, but all the other issues I cannot replicate.
What I really hate about the keyboard is the language button - I always press it instead of the space bar. The screenshot button I also wanted to being mapped to s.th. else. For the latter I prefer the spen gesture, as editing the screenshot is quite convenient with the spen.
Back light would be great, I also miss the charging option the iPad pro magic keyboard offers, and a bluetooth connectivity option would also be great (typing while having the tab disconnected) .. but well: it is what it is for the money it costs.
The rest: well - It's super slim and tiny - and respecting the size, typing is rather good. The touch pad is not laggy at all - but Android is not made for mices and so are the apps - and no: DEX for me is still too far away to offer a laptop usability. The keyboard is ok for typing, while convenient to always carrying it around. Good enough to do the job if needed. But definitely far behind my laptop.
I guess some here expect a full blown laptop replacement. If so, you should go for a surface book, with the cost of compactness, battery, and being more expensive.
Btw.: What remapping software you are talking about?
Would be great I easily could deactivate the language button. That's really the annoying part for me...
i'd also love to switch off or remap the sceenshot button, but alas, no luck it seems...

Well While I still wish it had backlight, Best buy has the keyboard 50% off tonight and I had a 100 dollar gift card burning ahole in my wallet. I picked one up today for 115. For the Kick stand alone i'ts almosty worth it and the keyboard is a bonus.

Well I also didn't like the feel of the keyboard. The one I have came with a folio style case so I can stand it up & the keyboard is backlit & has a touchpad. The only downside is the keyboard plastic is the cheap scratchy kind but for 45 bucks I can just get it wrapped of something.
How did you change it so you don't press the FN key for media controls? Cause mine I hate having to press FN to use the media controls.
