[Q] Browser Magnification Button - Vibrant General

Is there any way to remove the magnification buttons in the lower right hand corner of the browser?
I never use them... 2 finger zoom is much better. The buttons cover things up that you sometimes need to click. It's especially annoying when the thing you need to click is all the way at the bottom of the page.

I know that Cyananogen's mod removed it on the G1. I don't know if there's a way to do that with the Samsung's browser. but you may want to check out Dolphin HD. Amongst the first apps I downloaded after getting the Vibrant.

Additional use for the Hardware volume buttons & IE

It works on my Vairo...
If you blow IE up to full screen, the volume buttons allow you to scroll up and down the screen

Strangley enough I keep for getting about that .....
That been said I did find ( before I knew about this function ) that my thumb wanted to go up and down when surfing just like when I use a mouse.... so I guess you have the choice now - ergonomically this seems a little easier to use.
Terran
I'm a fan of the d-pad especially when browsing in landscape (which is most of the time). It just seems natural to use your right thumb to scroll up and down. I rember someone posted on HoFo (i think) that it was un-natural to have the keyboard slide from the left and not the right. But now having the device in hand I think it would be much more awkward having it the other way.

Left hand scroll bar in IE?!

Does anyone know if there's a setting to change the scroll bar from right to left in IE? I looked around but no joy. Thanks lads.
Other than using the unit upside down, I dont think this is possible! I am assuming that you are left handed ?
Nigel
It would be a nice option, not just for Universal, but for Win Mobile in general. I am left-handed, and the vertical scrolling is a PITA. I can not see where I am scrollling to because my left hand is covering the screen, and sometimes even accidentally touching it & activating links.
Same problem here Bill. Anyway, maybe someday Microsoft will make something for us the left handed ones. And thanks for the great tip veletron. lol (I can actually do more or less the same things with both hands but fot this I rather use the left.)
Couldn't you use the scroll buttons instead?
I'm working on something that could be hacked into assisting this, but it'd be a bit of a cludge.
If there's a need shout out and I'll see if I can get around to it.

I have tried using the scroll buttons, but they don't really scroll, rather they jump from link to link (in PIE) which resulsts in very jerky screen movements, and that is not very useful for me.
Then I tried a registry hack mentioned on another forum to make the button do real screen scrolling, but when I tried to use it, the device froze, and sent me to Hard Reset H*ll.
Ideal for me would be in PIE would be scroll bars on the left and buttons that really scrolled. Actually scroll bars on the left would be nice in every application.
It is not a necesity for me, but the bar on the right is an inconvenience --mainly in PIE.
Lefty here as well dude. Would be great to have a less discriminatory device
The worst thing is, that when you use the scroll bar with your left hand, you can't really see when to stop since your hand is covering most of the screen.

rotating home screen

is it possible for home screen to tilt when phone is tilted.
also how come browser only tilts left not right upside down etc
thanks
No & no.
The home screen (So i have read) cannot be tilted because of how the widgets were made and they dont allow it to be repositioned into landscape.
Browser does not tilt the other way (also, from what i have read and gathered) is because Android was built firstly on the G1 and that had a keyboard which slided one way. Did not make sense to make it rotate the other way, and so now that we have moved away from the Keyboard slide, it might be possible in the near future?
DO correct me if i am wrong anyone....this is just from what knowledge i have gathered from reading up these issues.

This is so the trackball can be used (by right-handers) with landscape mode.

Broswer: Quick jump to top of screen?

On the iPhone you touch the top of the browser screen and it takes you to the very top. Does android's browser do that? Thanks
Why don't you try it and find out.
I did and it doesn't do it. Maybe there is some other Waugh without having to scroll all the way up?
.......no.

Double tap to zoom out and flick the screen hard
Learn to flick the screen appropriately. Android's kinetic scrolling goes REALLY far once you learn how to use it, much much more than the iPhone I believe.
If you want it to fly to the top, do a fast flick from the very top of the readable page to the very bottom. This will/should take you to the top in no time!
Zoom out and fast flick does it for me as well.
If your purpose is to type out the website you wanna go to, just hit the menu button. From there, just type out the webpage. I used to try and scroll all the way up but then what's the point? Ü

Samsung secret features D-Pad and Screen

I just wanted to point a few things about the Samsung Vibrant everyone is complaining about how this phone does not have a D-Pad and i just wanted to clear this up.
In fact this phone has a d-pad, select the samsung keyboard if not already in use hold down the key on the keyboard that is use to select numbers and symbols you will see a d-pad appear with copy, past select text options.
Also to easily dim your screen or to brighten your screen, slide your finger across the top of the screen where the notification bar is and you will notice your screen brighten or darken according to which way you slide your finger. (Note you may need to disable auto brightness for this function to be activated.
Heres a pic of the dpad
The Swype keyboard also has a really nice d-pad. Just swype from the tutorial icon right to the SYM key and it will show up.

Thank you very much for the brightness slide tip!!!
Anyone else accidentally changing the brightness a lot? I swipe the bar with my left thumb, and if it's too angled of a swipe, my screen brightness goes to 11. I never thought I'd complain about a screen being too bright, lol.
can we activate the d-pad when not in a text entry field? I used the trackball on my G1 to select html anchors to get at small links or hovering elements
Wow I did not know this thanks for the info.

It can be used on a web page, but I've only gotten it to come up by hitting a text box first. For that, even the addresses bar works.

yes all you have to do is hold down the menu key they keyboard will pop up and then you just have to do the process up top..
What about when you need to see text in a menu selection that is truncated to the side?
For example, if you go to Market -> Apps, under Finance and Health, you can see there are text that runs off to the right edge you can't read. In my old phone MyTouch, if I highlight Finance, the text will scroll across so I can read the rest of the line. Can't do this right now with the Vibrant.

I'm not seeing that option since holding down menu opens the url bar which can't be closed independently of the keyboard.

Awesome post, thanks.
Anyone figure out a better way to auto-fit text on the browser? I find tilting my phone to change the orientation and tilting it back makes it auto-fit. Phones like the Incredible do it as you're doing pinch to zoom--no need to flip the phone around.

excellent! I didn't realize that was a d pad lol.. i always thought of a d pad being like a trackball or flat button like on the blackberry bold 9700
thanks to you and the original poster for the tip. I found out about the swipe for screen brightness by John on droiddog dot com
very nice but in swype you can do the same thing just swype from the swype key at the bottom left to the SYM key right beside it and you get arrows and some other goodies.
Oh wow! This was my biggest complaint about the Vibrant. Thank you very much.

I hit the - or + buttons back and forth to get the text to wrap, yeah it's a bummer they don't wrap using the pinch zoom. Also you can double tap the screen to initiate zoom, that method also auto-fits the text.
