Roughly 50% of the time when I suspend (sleep, via the Shift's power slider switch) Vista it fails - the screen goes off but then comes on again with Windows rebooting from scratch. I can't find an obvious pattern to it yet. My Vista install is standard, just updated with Windows Update patches (not SP1). Anybody else seen this yet? Any ideas for a solution please?
Thanks,
Andy
I haven't been able to duplicate this problem - I have the power switch set to hibernate, but I do sometimes use standy via the keyboard shortcut.
It always works fine for me.
normaly it's an application running on vista, Outlook 2007 is a real pain regarding this issue.
try to close all applications and see if the problem is still there, if not find out what app. it is by closing one at the time (antivirus etc.)
I have the same problem. I even reinstalled Vista to be sure it was not caused by some software I installed but it's still the same. The problem occurs when I try to enter sleep or hibernate mode.
same here. I havent found a pattern too...... I am running vista sp1. And some times when I resume I see the window you see after bad shutdown, this is, "press x to safe mode, press y to safe mode with network, ", etc
No doubt I'm speaking too soon, but since installing Vista SP1 today I haven't had the suspend problem.
Same issue here.. It thought it had something to do with the hybrid sleep I enabled. Disabling didn't solve it.
Windows reboots and tells it has recovered from a unexpected error, and you can click to determine what caused the reboot. Windows then analyses that the issue has been caused by 'Vista' made by 'Microsoft'.
So I think it's a bug in Vista not fixed in SP1. It's actually very anoying because I like hybernating my device to spare battery.

This is really becoming very annoying especially because of the short battery life. Sleep and hibernation mode are the only ways to survive a working day on 2 batteries. If I leave Vista on while I'm working in WM6 then Vista crashes after 10 to 15 minutes 2 out of 3 times. We need to find a solution for this problem the sooner the better or I will have to return to my Everun with an extended battery that works for more than 7 hours on one charge.
I don't mean to rub it in, but I'm not having any of these problems. Sleep, hibernate, using WinMo for hours while Vista is running, all working fine.
I've not installed SP1 yet, or the graphics driver update that windows update offered me - don't know if that's relevant.
I haven't installed the graphics driver either so I don't think it's that. I'd love to know what though, I've tried endlessly to find a pattern. It can do it with no applications running just as likely as if I have a few running. Also it is now happening again with SP1. It can happen after a completely clean reboot too - i.e. Vista boots, I log on and try and suspend, and it barfs.
And not mention the HTC Control panel now crashes after SP1 and I found out that the audio out driver is gone after SP1.
I find all of this rather dissapointing it's almost a virgin Vista installation. I have not tweaked it or did strange things to it.
I'm going to reinstall it see if that sets me back to a working installation.

I didn't have these problems.
Out of the box I made a ghost image and then I installed SP1 directly after that.
Sound is perfect, HTC control panel works perfect. No problem with SP1. It's even beter with it (faster. I installed a shift for a customer and I compared the SP1 with the non SP1, so I know where I'm talking about )
I've now restored Vista from the recovery partition and, so far at least, I've had no problems with suspend or hibernate.
Sort it out
I solved all my suspend problems by restoring to VISTA...
Then cancelling the origami install on first boot.
Then installed SP1 before doing anything else.
This seemed to have sorted out the problems.

So you think it's Origami that's causing the problems?
Hi,
I had no hibernate problems with my shift also none after SP1.
I did have to reinstall Shagctr (vista commanager) and that fixed the sound too.
Also I removerd Origami after my second boot. It is useless anyway...

No hibernate problems on loader or using "balanced"?
Now, first: I am not a technical guy like you guys but ...
--I have the idea that it always hibernates and resumes correctly when on the battery charger.
On battery only:
--That it hibernates/resumes correctly when setting the battery powerplan to "balanced"
--That it always hibernates wrong when the powerplan is set to "power saver"
So somewhere the Power Saver settings are causing the problem?
I will keep testing. It's a boaring Easter anyway.
PLs could you guys check if that is also the case in your situtation?

It has been a long time ago that I bought a new toy with so many problems as this little b**&^^rd.
Now, already three times, I did not have any sound at all.
I do not remeber what complains there were (No driver installed? No sound card?) And I do not feel the energy to find out.
After a restart (which is always quickly done in maximum 4 minutes and I am becoming quite good in finding other things to do when waiting for this and that) the sound is back.
Till now my disappointment only consists of:
1. This sound problem
2. Resume problems in low power settings
3 SD card not being recognized, randomly
4. Shift control centre sometimes crashing, or not working at all.
5. Origami crashing, or not working, or only partionally.
6. Bad performance of my VLC player
7. And whatever anybody can find on this forum.
Anyway.. I am trying to transfer info from my MacBook into my new Macbook Air and that also hangs all the time, resetting the connection etc etc.
So it's not only Vista that makes me alcoholic

Sounds familiar (forgive the pun). Not had your problems but I'm reaching the end of a bottle of wine that I opened 45 minutes ago whileunistalling SP1 which caused me endless troubles. Did you install SP1?
trend micro the culprit
If you did the vista sp1 upgrade you must uninstall trend micro antivirus from your system. It is not compatible with sp1 and breaks all of the items you mentioned.
I had the same problem - uninstalled and rebooted, all fixed.

display quirk?
Display quirk?
I recognized that the brightness of the start screen of Snapvue is irregular. Shouldn't it be pitch black? But across the screen I have got sort of a big grayish egg. Or: a big oval part is much lighter than the rest of the start screen in Snapvue. If I go into a menu which is basically white then the irregularity disappears.
Is this a common thing? Or is it just a quirk of my Shift?
Can I change the start screen having liberated the Shift (first steps), not changing to Realvga, I don't know if I have the courage to do that.
Thanks!

1: I am not using WM. But as far as I can see Snapvue working OK. No SIM card however. The sound not working occurs absolutely randomly, but I suspect a little bit the interaction between Origami and WMP. Could be the powerplan, but still....
2. I know, that's solved ( more or less but no more use of low power possible = shorter battery life).
3. I do not know what you mean, and what the realtion is between Vista and WM, I thought the SD card is not recognized by WM at all. I am talking about the SD card randomly dissappering when in Vista. Sometimes after suspend. etc. See that thread.
4. I cannot force this problem with Shift control centre. So no idea when.
5. Different powerplans. I combine them. I will do new research wit Origami only using the fastes power plan. ( If I have time)
6. I tried everything with VLC. It is not a huge problem and also randomly. But in full screen it plays irregularely. I know VLC is not the fastest of all, but still.
I suspect it is Vista doing all kind of things ( Indexing I shut of from the first day) randomly, preventing VLC to play correctly.
When I let it rest for a long time VLC performs better.
VLC working flawlessly or not, is not related to any powerplan or battery use. Tested all combinations. So, when it is working nice, I pull the power supply; put it on low power, and it keeps working nice.
It is all quite disappointing, and I am not an easy complainer.

Strange... I do not see any difference after updating.
But my VLC is doing reasonably well, only in full screen it sometimes gets hickups.

hey The sound bug is easily fixed, just open the device manager on the vista side of course, go to sound and on the plugin window it will say that it works but it didnt in my case, all I did was disable it wait a couple of minutes and then enable it again... hope it works for you

I have a problem, when I turn Wi-Fi on the whole unit becomes unresponsive. I cannot open almost any program, the DVP runs slow and freezes.
If I turnt it off is back to normal.
Anyone else is having this issue?
I got 2 units, one of them has ths problem, the other one does not.
They are both 16gb.
I am not getting as many issues as you but the WiFi does seem a bit more problematic than the WiFi on the HD7. The only lockups that I have seen have been when I am on WiFi. Also the Venue Pro seems to have a harder time staying connected to the WiFi than the HD7 on the same network.

I compared the 2 units I have and they are all identical software versions.
Do both phones have the same build date? You can find it on the box.

Yes, both have the same date 12/14/2010.

Mine was built 12/17 (16GB) and is exhibiting the freezing while on WiFi. I don't think it's a batch issue. Perhaps it's the encryption type. I use WPA2 and I have the WiFi-freezing-the-phone problem.

Yes indeed. still no go.
I noticed yesterday while Wi-Fi is enabled, and music is playing through your speakers (haven't tried via headphones), the music skips for a second then continues playing. This happens repeatedly if you're listening to music for awhile.

This is way out there, but could the freezes be related to subpar SDCARD performance ? I had one instance where I shut down the phone, and when I turned it back on the first run setup wizard came on. All the apps I had downloaded were gone. Has not happened again, but evidently, downloads go directly to SD, and apps execute directly from SD. Large downloads seem to Freeze the phone, the browser in conjunction with the marketplace, etc. I don't know, just throwing it out there. Could be Dell be using different SD card models or manufacturers and affecting performance ? I know it's crazy, just want to hear your opinion.

That is what I suspected as well. Maybe it's crashing because the SD card is being taxed more by the faster WiFi data (vs. cell data).
I wonder if those who have freezing have more apps or data installed and now the phone is using the SD card instead of the internal memory? As pointed out in another thread, there's about 1GB of internal memory.

Just froze for me (first time today as I hadn't used it save for a phone call and email) while downloading an app in the background while browsing a webpage.
Seemed to do it on command-- as soon as I opened up the browser and went to a page, it stopped, I pressed the Windows key and it sent me to the tile page where it was frozen with the whole people tile filled up with faces.
Long press of power button needed to reboot.
And yes, this was while on WiFi.
My 16GB (don't have the build date) and mine is doing the same thing. I am at a location where I don't have great service and have had to connect to WiFI all weekend. When I go to a rich website or the marketplace the phone will just freeze.
Dell is sending out a new one this week. Hopefully this will fix the issue.

The center and right part of back start to heating after several minutes all of the phone gets hot.
Mostly chatting or web surfing and some times gaming but the problem is ,it gets hot even listening music or other light works.
that could be very bad.
that's where all the power management and usb related chips are located.
it might require a new motherboard.
I was kinda hoping you had the same problem as me, which is heating just below the camera which is caused by "wifi scanning" going haywire(Wi-Fi toggles blinking on/off while Wi-Fi is off)

Google for the button combination.
Clear system cache is found on the boot menu.
A hard reset is sometimes called a soft reset and stimulates pulling the battery. On many Androids it's done by holding the power button down for 20-30 seconds until it reboots.
I've never seen a memory leak on an Android and once on an Apple app. More common on Window machines. The ram usage will kept creeping up until it runs out of ram and reboots.
The app causing it will show it in its memory usage in Developer options. Pretty easy to spot.
A poorly coded 3rd party app is usually the cause.

I already did clear system cache which was successful and I gave it a day to see if it worked out but it didn't. It's still rebooting random every 6 hours especially when I'm not on it.

Does it happen in safe mode?
If so either the firmware is corrupted or it's a hardware failure. How old is the battery, it's current capacity? Did you check for a memory leak?

I haven't set it on Safe mode.
How old is the battery? I got it off Amazon one month ago. The battery is just good and the battery life lasted so good and it never drains. I never used the tablet while it's charging.

Oh yes, my S5e would stay up to about 11 hours until it restarted itself randomly.
And sometimes it restarts suddenly for like every 2 hours.
So I've switched it to the safe mode to see if it happened in Safe Mode or not but unfortunately, that tablet was up for 5 hours during Safe mode until it restarted itself again.
