S8 says it's charging but won't actually charge - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello.
I just want to preface this by saying I have no knowledge regarding the inner workings of a phone, so please forgive me if I use any terminology incorrectly.
A few weeks ago my S8 wouldn't charge, although I thought said it was doing just that. I don't have a habit of leaving the phone for overnight charging but I do use fast-charging a lot. One evening, I left it to charge for about an hour and came back to find it hadn't gone up in percentage. I thought the issue was with the charging cable (the cable and adapter are the original ones) so I purchased a new one. It also gave the same issue, even when I tried it with a new adaptor. Eventually, my battery drained and the phone was unusable. I don't have warranty for this phone so I had it checked by someone who said the battery was dead and I got it replaced. I assumed that was the end of it but the issue persisted. The phone would say "Charging" or "Fast Charging" but the percentage wouldn't go up. Even when powered off it wouldn't charge. As of right now I'm still in the dark as to what the problem is and how it can be repaired. Someone said the problem is with the "charging IC" or something along those lines. Is this a highly unusual problem or are there some likely explanations as to what the issue is and how I can resolve it?
Thanks in advance!

if the issue resides in the IC (integrated circuit) , then youre going to have to have the charge port replaced which isnt going to be cheap. Teh part itself is, but the labor will make the overall cost around $70 to $100 (guesstimate at the very best). At this point, you have to ask yourself how much the phone is worth to you. I just got a S9 from cricket by "porting in" a new line. I was already a cricket customer, so i bought a "phone number" off ebay with an account and pin number and "ported" that number. I use quotes because there wasnt a tangible number to port, it was just to trigger the sale on the phone. Anyways, you have to buy a $50 service plan and the phone for $275. $325 for a S9 isnt bad especially when you consider that you can unlock it for around $20 online and flash the U1 firmware to unbrand it. The phone number cost be $7, so all in i have a S9 for 352 bucks, and it would be even cheaper if i legit ported my number and didnt need to unlock it outside of crickets unlock policy

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately, I'm not in the US and therefore don't have those options you mentioned. At this rate, repairing the phone is my best bet and probably the most feasible outcome, even with the estimated cost. If the charging port is the issue, could I get away with only using wireless charging?

Rooted G1 Won't Power On - HTC Support Conversation

UPDATE : HTC was kind enough to replace the motherboard! Issue resolved! Thanks HTC and everyone who helped me here....
I have dealt with Apple support and they have excellent support, never had to pay for shipping.
Situation : I have a rooted G1 with Cyanogen's 4.0.1 ROM. I was listening to music and stopped the music app. After 3 hours, the G1 won't power on - no LEDs nor backlight nor the vibration. It just lays dead.
Steps taken : Tried pushing the power button to no avail. Removed the battery. Left the phone charging overnight. No dice!
Further steps (HTC Support) : This is where it gets interesting! The guy was more than happy to setup a repair.
REPAIR DISCLOSURE
1. All units will be charged a triage fee of $39.00 or less. This includes
technical assessment and diagnosis.
2. Rooted G1's - minimum of $379 to repair!
3. I should pay for shipping (incoming HTC).
Frankly, these phones are not worth $400 anymore. Any suggestions are really appreciated. Should I consider getting it repaired via HTC?
Thanks in advance! I have been on XDA_Dev Forums for years, never faced such an issue (Windows Mobiles...) but Android device (G1) is posing issues. Please help guys!
Are you still under warranty? If so they'll fix it for free at least that's what I've experienced the last 2 times I mailed mine in. They told me about the 39.00 thing but never charged me. If you aren't under warranty it'll be cheaper to buy a used G1 if they want to charge you 379 to repair.
Or I would unroot the phone
jigdagod : Yes, I am still under warranty. The guy @ HTC says all G1's should still be under warranty. HTC's repair process sounds kinda shady - atleast the way he dealt with me on the phone call. So, my question is : Will they be able to determine that my phone is rooted even though the display doesn't turn on?
nolimit78 : I would love to unroot but since the phone doesn't respond at all (no lights, no nothing!), there is little I could do when it comes to modifying the software in the current situation.
Thanks for the help guys, any more HTC rooted G1 experiences?
I was able to unroot mine before sending it back, but mine was very obviously opened, void sticker removed, and plastics broken. It was ugly. Inside, the fabric tape and kapton tape were gone. They covered everything under warranty. I dont know why they would care if it was rooted- so long as rooting it was not the cause of the damage. And honestly, if it doesnt boot, then they dont know. Just dont tell em. Worst case scenario they charge you the "$39 or less" triage fee, and send it back to you still broken, you will not be out the $380 at any point.
Out of curiosity, you say you let it charge overnight...was the LED normal (orange/green) during the charge? Maybe you killed the battery? It will not boot with a bad battery plugged in or not...I tried! LOL
No LED lights at all. Absolutely no form of light can be seen on the device.
Question : If I take the battery off and then charge the phone without battey, should the phone charge normally?
I hate spending $39 for diagnosis alone. I am spoilt with Apple support! They are lot better IMO!

How did you unroot your G1 when it doesn't power on? They serviced a phone with warranty seal broken??
Thank you!
Mine powered on, it had a problem waking up. But yes, it was obviously tampered with. I told them I bought it off Craigslist (which I did) and they took care of it.
I suspect the battery due to how it died- it may (MAY) be that it drained too far, and the protection circuitry is keeping it from charging now. Find someone with a G1 and borrow their battery. Craigslist is your friend! Or eBay, can probably get one to your door for $5 Where are you located?

You can't charge the phone lol.... you can charge the battery only. What I found is that you cannot turn on the G1 with it plugged into the charger w/o a battery. If the battery is damaged in anyway, it will not boot. However, you can easily replace it for ~$10 on ebay (I don't remember how much the OEM batteries are, but they are not very expensive)
Do what gospeed.racer says and get a friends G1 battery and test to see if it works (or take it to a T-mo store and ask them if they can check the battery for free)
Tmo store...thats an even better idea! They are everywhere and always seem to have half-charged batteries laying around. Plus they may be able to put in the call for you to get a replacement under warranty
I don't think they can tell at least they didn't say anything to me about it being rooted.
Thanks for clearing it out guys. So, we won't be able to turn it on without a battery (by the charger alone).. That's good to know!
TMo store - I'm hoping they would help. They are not always friendly. Will post my results here. Thanks everyone
If there is no light when it is charging, then another possibility is that the usb port on the phone has loosened from the main board. Stick in the cable and try moving the end around to see you can get the light to come back on.
I also got word from Drizzy that when I sent my phone to HTC they installed "breaker board" mainly a lock board that won't cause interceptions like flashing certain stuff. He said he only read about it he's not 100%. Which to me might be correct because I can only install up to H 6.01 ROM. I tried Hero and other and it won't work at all. Just more info to think about before sending it i to HTC.
I have Hero on mine that was returned from HTC, and they did replace both boards. Just a FYI, more of a YMMV I guess.
Had same problem
Had same problem here
Phone didnt power up ,no lights when charging, nothing
then i just used the AC Charger (Motorola one) instead of using computer usb
and then like magic i see an orange led ,then after like 5min i power up it
i guess sometimes usb volts is problematic
tell me if this helps ya bro
@LowTek : I used different chargers to no avail Thanks for the tip though!
@ gospeed.racer : I visited T-Mo store, tried another battery to no avail! Lucky you! They replaced even though it had Hero on it?! Do you know anyone who works there or what is the trick? Or were you being just lucky
@ jigdagod : Hmmm, breaker board sounds scary! But I will be selling it off if they made it work. Not so impressed with the quality. Might invest in a HTC Hero with 850/1900 bands or worst case, HTC Magic just so that I can test ATT's 3G speeds and post reviews on my blog. I am hoping Google will come up with a solid reason to leave the iPhone at bay!
@ badbob001 : Tried that to but nada
I will be sending it to HTC and hoping that they won't charge me any fee! Thanks a ton guys and I will keep you guys posted for documentation purposes just in case someone goes through the same phase!

ok, again I will tell the story. It HAD hero but had a problem waking up. Not all the time, only when sleeping. If I never let it sleep, it was never a problem. I was able to unroot, put it back to rc29, and send it in. It looked stock and was stock. When I got it back, I didnt even boot their rom. I put hero back on it, and no problems there either. Since then I have put many roms on it without any issues.
Thanks all! HTC replaced the motherboard and sent it back! I never expected this from HTC cos' I rooted G1 and put Hero on it. They either ignored the fact or they couldn't figure it out! All in all - a fantastic experience. Now I am off to selling it, haven't even used it for more than 5 days in total. I wish they come out with ATT 3G frequencies, HTC Hero hopefully!

[Q] Bricked or peice of poop right out of the box

Hello, Im stumped I just bought a brand new phone from ebay sealed in the box its a tmobile htc hd2. upon opening it from the box and turning it on the phone would get stuck at the stick together screen. never did fully boot once. then after about 10 min of waiting i pulled the battery and put it back in. Then the phone would only light up the keys and nothing else. once again took the battery out and put it back in. Now NOTHING, wont respond to any type of reset and wont do nothing. wont charge wont connect to pc did I just get a dud RIGHT out of the box? i did nothing to make this happen i didnt even get to the main screen urgh $450 later one month in shipping to receive what looks like a dud. Checked battery voltage its at 3.75 volts fully charged. wtf?
bump bump bump
That's not impossible.
Try to hardreset it, hold down both volume buttons and power on.
If it doesn't work, do you have the phone's warranty? Get it to HTC and they'll fix it / give you another one.
If not... try checking the eBay warranty that gives you the money back, don't know exactly how it works but i know there's something like this.
If all this doesn't help... then i'm sorry.
Not sure if you're in the United States, but at a T-Mobile store, a brand new HD2 will go for ~$450, and come with a one year warranty.
Hope all works out well.
Hey guys. No I live in Calgary Canada and I ordered this phone to work with our WIND mobile service provider. I tried everything... it wouldnt respond at all... funny though even though it didnt show any signs of life it was charging the batter PAST its rated 3.7 volts. At one point I read 4.2 volts at the battery while out of the phone which is strange to start with. Thinking it was the battery I hard wired the phone to a spliced USB cord to see if it would power up and still it did nothing. I then said this is ridiculous and called tmobile and htc. all I have to say is WOW. Tmobile is serious about customer service even for me not being a client of thiers. Same goes for HTC. both offered to repair or replace the phone as it was brand new and they could see from imei.t-mobile even offered to refund my money which i didnt even pay to them in the first place. Wish we had customer service like that up here in calgary where the city is run on oil money and oil hungry people.. not cool. Anyways I talked to my seller off ebay because I didnt want to wait and he agreed to send me a new one overnight express with fedex and i will get it saturday. I sent this one back already forget trying to fix a problem matic phone. Oh yeah this next one was tested before shipment BUT I did read there is alot of people with this problem and no one has an answer still...............
thanks anyway guys
The battery's supposed to go to 4.26V. And it's good that you're getting another.

Warranty service issue.

Has anyone have problem with warranty service, since I have sent my phone for repair over 3 weeks now, haven't had received my phone back yet and customer service runs me in circle with incorrect answers.
communication is a problem but they eventually get it done.
Thanks for reply, yes you were right on that, I finally got my replacement phone back.

You only hope is contacting the vendor that you bought it from and pursue them for the guaranteed 1 yr warranty exchange or service. I did this recently with Mailstop.
Just a few days ago , I read that these phones are selling extremely well. The problem is that they lost face in China and investors avoid them like the plague. Although Letv did pay off $15 million in debt just a few days ago. Next, they filed partial bankruptcy in China...not full. So who knows?
Good Luck,
FYI There are parts available and services available ( In India, Russian and Italy) that may be able to repair the phone if you can't get it exchanged.

Before you consider exchange, try another usb cable, most of the time simply getting another cable is all you need to do.
Yes, Amazon/MailStop replaced the phone with a brand new one.
Mine came with faulty usb cable that fried the usb card. Unfortunately this has happened on many Leeco phones, and it happens on many phones that never had any other OS installed other than the stock EUI.
I believe Amazon has changed their cell phone return policy. But, it they advertised the warranty when you bought the phone they will honor the warranty. Just call Amazon, be polite, explain that the phone will no longer charge, probably due to a faulty usb cable or low quality battery.
They will create a case, where they contact the vendor and give the vendor 2 days to reach you. Mail-stop responds quickly by sending a shipping label. Return the phone in the box in came in with everything that came with the phone, headphones, CDLA adapter etc.
They will send a brand new phone in exchange.
Worst case, if you cannot get a warranty exchange for some reason. Just buy another battery on eBay X720 and X727 have cross compatible parts.

My phone has always been stock emu. At first I had to restart phone or turn off to charge. Then a day later the port got hot and smoked and the connector was melted in the charging port. Luckily I was nearby. After removing the connector from the port with a pair of channel locks the phone worked just fine. I foolishly tried to charge again and burned another cord up. The phone still functions fine but port is dangerous and destroyed.

Charger port

Hello community.
I have a recently purchased 6t. Upon arrival of my new phone, I have noticed that when I plug in the oem charger, there is fair play (wobble) in the port. Everything works fine etc. Charging, it clicks in.
This concerns me because I am very anal about charger ports wearing down in the long term future and am always careful when handling my phone while charging.
Does any one else phone do this? Is it normal?
It makes me worry connecting the headphones to the port if I want too and putting the phone in my pocket which I haven't done yet because of this issue.
I have contacted oneplus but it appears they are ignoring me as I never heard back from them.
I have to add that I am a little upset with their customer support.
Hey, I actually noticed this problem on my 6T too, but honestly, I've gotten used to it. I have also noticed that it tends to be a bit loose.....which means that sometimes, not all the time, a little pull can take off the charging cable. The same goes with the dongle. It gets annoying, but I'm certain that it was a manufacturer defect. I haven't emailed or talked to OP in any way yet, but if we get a larger group of people complaining about this, maybe we can get something done.
PS. Let me know if your type C connector is a bit crooked when it's plugged in.
Mine was bought off eBay (I know, I know) .. it was my second purchase.. the first one was purchased from eBay and worked great until I had realized its IMEI was bad.. and I dont have time to try to go into fixing that. But I can replace a flex port charger cable. I could tell the different right away. I made sure there was no excess debris, etc.. but I cannot FIND A REPLACEMENT ANYWHERE except for in China, which would take a month if I used normal shipping for the 5-10 dollars that it should cost. If I want something that'll supposedly come quicker, it would at least be shipped in the US or Canada or even the U.K. China takes months to ship for whatever reason.. they want $30 just for fedex. There's another youtube guide about replacing it that seems to be a bit cheaper and honest about pricing, but still over the stop.. something with eBay. I can't find it anywhere. I'm literally just about to return the phone and give up on the OnePlus 6T ... since it isn't an LG or a Samsung Galaxy Swhateverthe****, replacement parts seem rare and very hard to come by.
If anyone knows anything, please don't hesitate to at least post in this thread. I'd like to get a charger that isn't chipped and barely working. If a file is transferring and I move the phone the slightest inch, you might as well forget it. For me it's not that it's loose.. it's just straight up defective. I wrote it off for awhile but I tried to recently contact the eBay seller about getting a replacement and haven't gotten a response. I was hoping he'd just have one he could swap out or even one he could send to me and that do me enough justice, so long that it works. Shipping from China is basically like asking for a bad cable all over again unless you use a major shipping outlet i..e Fedex, UPS, etc..
ANYTHING on this would be appreciated. This is technically still under the vendor's warranty but I doubt he has many of these. It's a Worldphone, dual-sim, unlocked.. I'm trying to keep this one.. even though I could do the same thing to my T-Mobile and grab a simple dual-sim tray.
Don't know much about this site so do your homework 1st before buying.

Warranty support for my Pixel 2 XL is the worst I've ever experienced...

I love my Pixel (and Nexus before it) phones, but based on my most recent experience with the Google "customer support" I think this will sadly be my last.
Like so many others my USB-C port has failed. At this point I can get no data across it and 90% of the time I try charging the phone it either starts cycling charging/not charging or just crashes. Oddly it is able to charge (slowly) when it's off. Needless to say it's been a battle keeping it charged and the inability to use Android Auto sucks.
I opened a case with Google support (July 15th) where I got bounced around 4 times and had to keep explaining the problem to each person. Finally the case was "escalated" to an engineer to determine if the phone should be replaced under warranty. Unfortunately it's not possible to talk to anyone in that department by voice or chat, my only contact has been with "Shane" from google support via Email. I haven't heard back from him in 8 days now and "he" just ignores all my emails.
Amusingly I did receive a support survey yesterday asking how my service experience was... I wasn't exactly nice on it.
BTW, I did buy into the "Preferred Care" scam when I bought the phone (at full retail), but now I'm told that in order to use that I will have to pay the deductible to have my poorly built phone replaced...
</vent>
I should mention that yes, I cleaned the connector. I used 91% isopropyl alcohol and a dental brush to clean it extensively (tried multiple times now).

Wow, sorry to read that. Hope something gets resolved.
Luckily over here in my country there is a authorised physical repair shop. Had touch issues with my 2xl.
Sent the phone in on Friday 7pm, got it back fixed on Saturday 12noon. Don't even need to go thru Google web support
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I had the same problem a year in and brought it back to the Telus store. They ended up giving me a new one instead of replacing the port. Apparently it was still covered under the manufacturer's warranty.
I could charge fine but couldn't transfer files or connect to the computer. Strangely I could still use a type c thumb drive and flash ROMs no problem.
I recently RMA'd my phone under the standard 2-year warranty. After the July update, my phone would not charge of the official charger and when plugged in to it, it would turn off the phone. Tried various plugs/cable combos and finally got an old LG plug and cable to charge it. Had to be off and took 8 hours to fully charge.
Used the support option on the phone for a callback. Tried the usual, safe mode, factory reset. Twenty minutes later I received an email with label and details on how to return the phone. The process was easy and they were great about it.
It may be worth talking about how all this started after the July update, there might be something in that to get them to swap it.

I think it's too late for that, I already told them it started after getting my phone a tiny bit wet... Even though it's supposed to be IP67 rated and I made sure it was dry and waited ~8 hours before trying to charge it!
I have had the exact same problem as you. It was just weird that my USB c to headphone jack didn't work, so I just chalked it up to it being something wrong with the connector. but I plugged it into my Samsung Galaxy note 9 and it worked fine. I then had an issue with the charging, I had it plugged in the whole time and look at it a little bit later and it's completely black. I have to hold the power button down for 20 seconds or so and eventually it would power back up but the battery would be dead. So I assumed it was a bad cable so I replaced the cable and even started using the one that came with it. Well after upgrading to Android q I noticed that I could see a little bit of burn in. So I read some of the forums about people who are getting replacements for that issue. I went to my pixel 2 XL, went to the settings, and opened up the chat from there. I spoke to someone, and told them that I had a Verizon pixel 2 XL that had burn in and I have never dropped it or had it in water. She had me send a picture of the front and back of it which I did. She asked me where I purchased it. I'm almost positive I purchased it at the Verizon store, but I was not sure so I told her I think it was Best buy but I wasn't sure. She said she needed the IMEI, and once I gave it to her she said the warranty was up in November of 2019. And that she would do a exchange with me. So I got the RMA information and I'm going to send it off. She said 5 to 10 business days is the usual turn around. But I'm in Texas and where I'm sending it to is in Texas as well so hopefully it shouldn't be that long. Hopefully I will get a Google refurbished and not even Verizon one. I just thought I would let you know that you're not the only one having that problem. I just happened to try my luck with that chat portion on the pixel 2 XL and it worked. I'll post back and let everyone know if I got the Google refurb or Verizon
I called Assurant directly on a Friday afternoon. I had a new to me phone on Monday and it was Google's version, not vzw. If it's refurbished, I'm surprised at the packaging it was shipped in.
I had s completely different experience. I was having a problem with one of my speakers not working. I chatted with support and they escalated it. Twenty minutes later I had an email with the RMA information. They put a hold on my credit card for the price of a new phone and overnighted my replacement. When they received my defective one the hold was dropped. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Quick question: what happens if Google has to replace the phone but doesn't have a new one (or even refurbished)? Are they going to throw a 3aXL at you and call it an equivalent replacement? I'm just curious if anybody has encountered a similar issue...

You'll get the safe model back. The parts for any device are produced past the end of life of devices so they can be repaired/refurbished. Warranties cover same for same, insurances cover replacement of same/similar device.
I just got my 2 XL replaced for the same reason. My USB port stopped working properly. Issues with charging, data connections, etc. That was actually quite easy to do through the Google Store. After a few minutes of chatting i had a new one on the way and a hold placed on my card until they receive my replacement. What I'm unhappy about is Google sent me a replacement device that 3 months older based on its manufacture date. Basically a first run item. Also my display is not as good as my original which was flawless. The new one is much cooler in color temp.
