I am liking stock OOS and not a big fan of custom ROMs but reading the posts in some of custom kernel threads, I start to wonder if rooting is worth it just for the sake of flashing a custom kernel.
Performance is already great on stock so the question becomes whether battery life is that much better on a custom kernel compared to stock?
Depends on the Kernel. If you choose Omega, then Yes. Battery life is definitely better. Also if you root you can also use Root Apps to change Themes, get a System-Wide AMOLED Black Dark Mode and change the Fingerprint Animation. Custom Kernels are an added benefit.

Well mostly what the title says. What am I missing from those roms using stock+gravitybox?
Performance!
Yes i had this question too, I tried both Stock and Custom, the main reason of flashing a Custom Rom is performance + Battery Life that you don't get much on Stock.
Just for curiosity, I have a stock nexus and my lasts phones I usually rooted to actualize with new rom, because always them was behind. Our phone is been actualized stock software until now, and I want to know from who rooted their nexus which benefits can u see of root our nexus 4?
P.s: if moderators not see that is a relevant post , can delete, just let know me first.
Thanx

Benefits are the same. After rooting you can install cutom roms. You get better battery life, USB fast charger, App opps, UI customization etc. But you will not get direct updates from Google.
So I just flashed stock image 5.1.1 and my battery life really took a hit. What custom rom has the best battery life these days? I am definitely not a power user, I just want long battery life.

Almost agree except for "After rooting you can install cutom roms". Rooting has nothing to do with custom roms. In order to flash a custom rom you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader
Back to topic, I root my device to get my freedom. There are noumerous apps (wich I use) that require a rooted device. So, for me no root, no joy.
cheers

You can try SimpleAOSP Rom by snakeater. Install Hellscore Kernel or modified Semaphore kernel by Snakeater. Use conservative governer with touch boost to get better battery life.
This is the very first time in Nexus history that more people are running stock roms rather than custom roms. So let's settle it, shall we ?
custom because im lazy
stock
PureNexus user checking in. I've always enjoyed flashing ROMs and there seems to be a lot of thought put into this one - not to mention overwhelming community support and usage. Android, to me, has always been about third party development and I love to have that perspective represented on my device.
Just got it today so stock...... For now?
Still on stock. Not even rooted yet.
Stock here.
I'm not even rooted either.

Entirely stock, but downgraded back to 6.0 since i was suffering from weird LTE issues. Otherwise stock and unrooted.
Stock and with no root. Its the first phone wich i havent rooted
Stock is way smoother than any other custom ROM, I miss the features like unlink ringtone and notification from custom roms, but the smoothness of stock is unparalleled.
Stock..unrooted

Rooted all the way baby. Stock is nice but I can't live without xposed framework and custome governor profiles
If you guys ever root try this set up and never look back.
Custom Room (xTraFactory is what I am running)
ElementalX Custom Kernel (with DarkSpice profile)
Xposed Framework ( look at pictures bellow)
Cataclysm Mod
AdAway
Naptime App ( on aggressive mode)
Crazy Battery and insanely smooth. Use my phone without worrying about anything
Stock rooted with a custom kernel (franco at the moment) and xposed is perfect.
I used to check out different ROMs on all my previous devices but 6P with all that stated above is perfect.
For those that say stock is smoother than a custom rom ...must be a placebo lol

Could always stay stock, root and take advantage of Xposed?
That's I am using now, stock plus Xposed, but that slows down the phone a bit, and I get a force closed every now and then.
Stock, rooted, running xposed

Stock, no root - for the 1st time ever
Ubermallow or bust... There's literally no comparison.
Darkspice?

hey im using elementalX kernel but would you tell me how to get this darkspice profile working?
Thx
I want to flash a debloated ROM, and hoping to get a better performance, less stutter. Don't get me wrong its a great device, but sometime the UI lag is noticeable.
Do custom roms help with this? do all the debloated deknoxed roms actually improve anything?
Thanks

Well that's the whole point of custom ROMs. If they didn't improve anything then there would be no such thing as custom roms.
yes, they help for most part but there are some disadvantages to flashing custom roms.
First of all knox will be permanently lost as it trips the efuse (hardware).
You can not receive updates.
It is upto you decide if it worth it. Everyone has different uses on their phone.
Hello everyone,
I was a Samsung user for many years, until I changed my mind after looking at the OP specs and amazing features.
I bought it two days ago and it's really impressive, fast and smooth OS, clean and fluid, it also has a great battery life.
But I was wondering, if I should root it to get the maximum of the performance and battery improvements, I saw a couple of kernels and some of the users' comments on how they improved the experience.
So all I'm asking, is it worth rooting the device only to flash ROMs and kernels for better experience?
Thank you!
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have the 12GB RAM (256GB) version
I think it is worth for custom kernels at least for me. I personally use a lot of Magisk modules for charging, ad blocking and so on and I'd never want an unrooted device
This is the first phone ive ever had which I've not rooted or even unlocked the bootloader. It's on my to-do list, was waiting for a fully functional TWRP. But I think that times soon.
The benefits to rooting and installing a custom ROM are huge, it's a great phone for development so yes I would recommend it..
Personally I don't usually go with custom kernels as I tend to find stock kernels more stable, but that also depends.

Yeah same, but I'm not planning to flash any custom ROMs, I'll use only custom kernels because some of them are promising and tend to improve the overall experience.
