Zoom whilst video recording..... - OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi all, I've seen a few comments in some other threads around this but nothing recently, can people still confirm this isn't working in the latest updates or has anyone heard anything about it coming in the near future (I've done plenty of searching with no luck) ?
I had the P30 Pro previously which could use any of the zoom modes for video which was awesome for concerts and sports. I hate curved screens hence the move to the Reno 10x.
I have my handset (8/256 variant) arriving in the UK tomorrow from Carphone Warehouse so assume this is the Global Version.

I have mine from carphone warehouse and it's the global version. Haven't had any issues with the zoom while recording.

Video only uses primary camera lens.

This is the only big drawback of the Reno 10x. It can only use the main lens for video and only a 2x zoom is available (which is only a crop in the 48 MP lens).
Altough pinch to zoom is available in video mode, it is only a digital zoom with bad quality.
I have no idea if there is any hardware limitation for why the other two lenses can not be used but I guess there is some major limitation, otherwise Oppo had already turned this feature on with a simple update.
I wish Oppo would tell us the reason why the other lenses are not used for video.

Totally agree, this is a real disappointment, surely it's just a software thing that they need to spend a little time on developing (but then i read that Oppo doesn't really develop for existing products). The P30 Pro video capture isn't that great (processor limitation it seems) but at least it makes use of all the lenses.

Where did you buy it from? Can you send it back?
Thanks for the great review! Very helpful.
I really am incredibly tempted by this phone, after hovering with my finger on the checkout button for a couple of days I decided to hold off.
1. The Mi Note 2 due to be announced in 5 days is shaping up very interestingly and may not be too different a price point
2. There's still no TWRP. The standard 5s had a port in a few days but the delay and lack of outrage makes me cautious there's not going to be much active development outside of MIUI and coming from a Redmi Note 2 I wouldn't mind a change.

Got it from honorbuy.com
Not sure if I can send back as there's no manufacturing defect with the phone it's just that camera sucks.
Bought it for camera but noisy and no bokeh is a deal breaker
Samples below.
HDR, auto and stereo mode in that order. I have to say HDR is very slow. If you shake during the photo process you'll have blurred picture. You'll notice auto is noisy!
I am thinking to change g4 (bootloop issue) with one of Xiaomi phones. Was very tempted to buy 5s plus or 5s but will settle with MI5 Pro....
Why you getting mi5 pro?

- reduced price since "S" has been launched
- there is a very little difference between S820 and 821
- memory is the same
- screen is the same
- camera is not that good at all on "S"- no OIS, artifacts in some reviews in video, focus issues...

The EIS isn't that bad. I'm guessing the camera can improve with updates. The Google Pixel has the same sensor and its a very good camera

prying open a phone to replace cameras is not fun (at least not for me) and there is a very little guarantee that it would work as firmware needs to be adapted. Better live with it or get phone you love (tested Huawai Honor phones and they have awesome dual cameras) than getting stuck with one you dont like
Ther's an app compatible with this camera? The stock can't Save raw photo..

Someone told it can't have Bokeh because one of the captor is monochrome but now the Huawei mate 9 is out and it has Bokeh with a monochrome captor so maybe Bokeh will come in a software update?! I want that too.
Has anybody seen Meizu Pro 6 capabilities in real life?

No not exactly. I wasn't referring to actually talk about Meizu Pro 6 device but as others have been talking about DOF bokeh etc. I just wanted to point people at checking how they've done it on the Pro 6 device. The DOF seems to be so very good that you'd feel you've got a DSLR with f2.0 lens. At least it seems so impressive. I'm not sure about bokeh in such situation. Wehther they've simulated round diaphragm or any other shape. I suppose a completely round one would be the simplest and would also look best and most professional as more expensive pro lenses use diphragms with many more blades than cheap ones (5 or 6). And these become apparent in bokeh situation.

Mate 8 camera performance on nougat?

Hello everyone, I'm a hairs breadth from ordering a mate 8 as my Christmas present to myself but I have a question before I do.
Having (possibly) read all the reviews there are for this phone I can see people often grumbling about the camera quality. Now I'm sure that as it is it'll be at least as good as the one on my LG G PRO 2, but my query is this. Now that several people have nougat installed, is the camera better than it was on marshmallow? Would it be possible for people to try replicating pics from before the update but on nougat now to post their thoughts?
I'm likely to order one tonight either way, but I'm sure this would be of interest to buyers who have put it off until now.

I've been taking photos since I was a kid in the 60's. In the early 80's, I was into film SLR's. In the early 2000's, I switched to dSLR.
I'm kind of picky. Using the default camera app, it's "ok", but if you switch to Camera FV-5, you'll have a lot more control over the
sensitivity of the camera sensor.
Under normal lighting conditions, it's not a bad camera, but you have to take into consideration, the sensor is still tens of times
SMALLER than even a APS-C camera sensor, as are all phone sensors.
signal to noise ratio, crosstalk, it's just hard to get around, when you pack megapixels worth of sensors, on such a small substrate.
Great suggestion on the camera app - I think I've seen it suggested elsewhere too. I was really wondering if anyone who has updated their phone to 7 on the betas had noticed an improvement in the camera app, but as it should be with me in about ten days and the official update should be fairly close I'll be able to make comparisons myself!

I've got it, and the camera is indeed better than on my previous LG G PRO 2. I just did a shoot-out with a Pixel this morning looking through the office window and I have to say that there wasn't a huge amount of difference from what i could see on screen.. Hopefully I have managed to upload a stock Mate 8 camera shot and the same taken with the Pixel. There is more detail in the Pixel shot, but not enough to not be happy with the Mate. As to what will happen with the camera capabilities once on Nougat, I have no idea, but I'm happy with the results i'm getting at the moment! The Pixel shot is darker, but that maybe due to it having hdr+ on and the light balance difference from aiming higher into the sky.

Thanks for the comparison! That's very encouraging. I'll be looking forward to any updates with the camera software with the upgrade to EMUI 5.0 and Nougat.
Maybe next update (EMUI 5.0 and Nougat) bring to us some improvements from Mate 9 camera.
"Aside from the latest security patch, the update also includes several other changes, including 10x digital zoom option in the camera as well as some performance related improvements."
http://www.gsmarena.com/december_security_update_hitting_huawei_mate_9-news-22331.php
With latest Nougat (I'm not sure whether it was there before or not), it allows to save raw pictures (in pro mode).
I know camera is 1000% much better than on emui 4.1 on 4.0 is good but on Nougat is really good

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the Huawei P20 Pro come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Having trouble with autofocus on the P20 pro in videos. It seems to effectively render the zoom unuseable. Am I doing something wrong? Do I Have a faulty handset?

What kind of trouble exactly? I'd be happy to test if you can give me a scenario.
One thing I have noticed on my end is that slow-mo at x8 and x32 seems to experience some form of "snow" effect on the video, it's not noise in the sense of grain or low video resolution, but actual white / blue pixels scattered throughout the video. In x4 mode this doesn't happen....and I'm pretty sure prior to the 107 upgrade this wasn't present.
Can anyone confirm?

On the one hand as terrible as it is, and don't get me wrong, it really is!
I'm glad that:
1) I've not gone mad
2) I'm not the only one
Clearly it's a software change that has caused the issue, so I hope they can resolve it. I think I'm going to look to find a means of sending this feedback.
Working in the software field myself, and prior to that QA and customer facing fields, I'm well aware that these things can happen. It's just such a shame that when the one thing the phone is touted for seems to be suffering massively
If anyone can post their thoughts, or even workarounds should they find them it'd be massively appreciated.

I was told do hardreset the phone by Huawei which didn't solve the probs with slow-mow (x8 and x32) entirely. There's some kind of little visible improvement but it's still disappointing, especially regarding the price & hype of the phone.
Now, Customer Support asked for my IMEI in order to forward the issue to R&D. (Hm, that firmware-bug depends to/on my IMEI? Prolly not. Just wondering.)

Hmm ok that's interesting...i mean bad batch could be explained if you had the issues on the older firmware. But these issues only appeared when i was updated to the new firmware on my end.
I've not heard back from them yet, might chase again because again hardware defect I'd expect to manifest itself in other shooting modes not just a specific case x8 and x32

Regarding the bad batch possibility, slow-mo in x4 should be affected also, shouldn't it?
Does anyone know if Huawei plans on putting out an update that adds stabilization to 4k video? Kind of like what OnePlus did with the OP5?

I've not had a chance to hard reset I'm afraid.
I honestly believe batch issues, i.e. hardware, would be affected in other camera modes and all slowmo speeds. The camera is fine for everything but two settings in slowmo video, that to me sounds more like a firmware bug than anything.

Hi bouyhy,
Why is very bad video? I know that 4K don't have stabilization. Is there any other bad thing?
I have S8 and im planning to sell it an buy P20 Pro. I just try P20 Pro in store, for a shot time and I like vide, video is much more sharpness then S8 what is better for me. But how I say I try It for very short time. Please can you tell me what was other bad things in video? For stabilization I have DJi Osmo Mobile, I think that will help me a lot.
I had the s8 for almost a year and sell for tge s9 plus and i guarantee you that the s8 is way way better than this p20 pro on video shooting, stabilization sharpness quality dynamic range everything, i own the p20 pro for about 4 weeks now and tried everything the video shooting is too bad, i prefer galaxy s6 or even s5 videos, but if huawe8 cares about his customers they xill push updraes o fux that with selfie shooter too, but for now they did nothing. Personally if you care about videos keep your s8 or go for the pixel 2 or wait for htc u12

I have both. I have tried every possible tweak to the video on the P30 Pro. The camera (for still photos) is much better on the P30 and I don't think anyone can argue differently. However, if video is important there simply isn't a competition. The S10 produced fantastic video and 4K on the front facing camera is nice as well. The P30 Pro has a very difficult time with lighting changes and it throws off color badly. There are times when panning to different scenes will completely change the color palette on the P30. What was brown becomes almost red and there is a lot of oversaturation at times. There is also some stutter to video at times. I have other complaints as well. I'd say if still photos are most important keep it. If the screen quality and video are high on your list the S10 blows it away on both levels. FYI... The microphone is also terrible on the P30 Pro. I use an external mic which solves it - but the built in mic on the S10 is far better.

Appreciate the help.
P30 Pro 256gb Aurora Power
P30 for still photos and for speed I think according to some benchmarks and for battery life according to some users,
S10 for video and screen and much much more refined and better UI really the one ui is amazing ,
Also frankly the s10 gets very good photos and the weak areas in the Samsung camera app is covered by the Gcam port :good:

Video is the dealbreaker for me. 30fps in 2019? Come on!
The Exynos version of the S10+ is capable of 8K 30 capture, for example!

If video is your priority it's pretty cut and dry. S10.
Sent from my SM-G975U1 using Tapatalk
I had both of them at the same time and I took the same photos and videos at the same time.
I bought the p30 pro because I got convinced by "authoritative" websites and reviewers, luckily thanks to these I managed to sell it without losing too much money.
The dynamic range is poor, the indoor photos go yellow and the outdoor ones tend to purple, a clear blue sky becomes lilac, the ryyb sensor is not so bright, the photos are even darker than the s10plus, the night mode alters the scene and creates a lot of noise, the photos are too compressed.
The only good thing is the 5x zoom.
The gap on the videos is huge.
I understand fashion, I understand sponsorships and collaborations, I understand that youtubers need to make views but I felt cheated.
The p30pro has a good Huawey style camera but not yet like other competitors.
This is my experience.
The reviews of this device were different than the user experience. More so than usual I believe.

4K 150fps 10bit or 8K 30fps is what it's capable of according to Samsung. Of course (software) always dictates what the user experience is. Since the Exynos version will be rooted and soon after development starts, these hardware capabilities will be explored shortly thereafter. That's the chief reason why to pick the "underdog" so to speak.
What's the best place to get a P30 pro on a good deal?
I want to give it a try, if anyone is looking to offload one please let me know
Besides video recording here some advantages of the s10+:
-Better qhd screen
-Better UI
-Unlockable bootloader
-gcam ports
I have both and long story short, the perfect phone will be the front of the s10 including the screen design camera fingerprint and second speaker , the back of the p30 pro design color camera faster wireless charger and battery running oneUI powered by the sd855
Both are good. There are more negatives about the p30pro which can be easily specially yellowish photos can be fixed with snapseed ... that's the price to pay for if u want this marvelous night mode camera and zoom.
If making photos (low-light and possibly zoomed) is your primary focus --> P30+
For just about anything else --> S10+
I have the S10+ and the camera and zoom would be my only reason to switch to the P30+, but just about everything else is better on the S10+ I believe... screen, software, speakers, video.
Batterylife, I can only say I have no issues at all with the S10+ (though I DID specifically go for the 10+ for battery life) and can easily manage 1 day and with some minor effort I'd say 2. Not sure about the P30 Pro, though I heard it's great in that aspect.
The P30 Pro has been proven to phone home to Chinese servers. If you have to use a VPN or special hosts blocker on a phone for security concerns, then I'd never consider it in the first place.

Where is the proof?
I did a quick search and all I found was a guy who went to a chinese website and was surprised that it was accessing chinese servers.

There is no evidence of any links to Chinese servers, only the potential, and iOS and other Google phones have the same potential... Nor is there any evidence of a single piece of classified data being moved via Huawei, its just a bid by Trump and US to get a better trade deal with China, even last week Trump said that the ban on Huawei could be lifted as part of a new trade deal... so one can see its not a security issue but a business one. See here the quote from Trump https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/23/trump-huawei-trade-deal.html
USA is the only country where iPhone sales are strong, 47% use iPhones vs 16% globally. So with Huawei making big inroads (now no.2 after Samsung) Trump needed to protect that 47% (imagine if the iPhone user base in the USA fell by 30% odd..)

Yep and let's not forgot the $200 Huawei phones. I don't think there is anything in that price range that is as feature rich.

Not about specs.
Its about software updates and value of phone. I will personally go for s10+.
And in many countries (like mine - Singapore), shops do not accept huawei phones as trade in anymore.

Camera Update (Autofocus issues etc.)

Hello,
since there are problems with the camera software, I am opening this thread to discuss your experiences and software update news.
I got my S20U Exynos variant today and straight out of the box there was an OTA (430MB) available which stated that the camera experience has been improved. It got better because I have tested it before the update but the autofocus is still "jumpy" and has problems with objects that are near to the phone. Even if i turn on the setting to adapt autofocus to the selected object in the viewer, it still jumps
EDIT: I did some tests today with my own face using the main sensor and the oversharpening / skin smoothing is gone. I tested it with HDR turned off and on.
EDIT 23.03.2020:
Look at this video guys. Focus hunting is gone. Sorry, I have orange blinds and the sun was shining directly on those.

Did the update bring any changes to the over sharpening / skin smoothing with the man lens?

I have just tested it with my own face at work in bureau using the main sensor and the oversharpening / skin smoothing is gone. I tested it with HDR turned off and on.
Plz keep us updated on the auto focus issue

I'm thinking the update you got, is the same as all of us. What's the sw#.
Here are the details for the one with camera improvements

I just did a little research and it should be the ATC2, right? The one that we all have also fixed the face photos with main camera.

Yes, that one. Hopefully it comes before my return period. If not, I'm sending it back.
ATC2 is already out in South Korea. Should be in the US in a few days or about a week the most

Lets hope so!!
As has been stated, ATBM is the one that everyone already has and it definitely did nothing for the camera.
Specific to the S20 Ultra, what about subjects' edge blurriness issue due to narrow Plane of Focus? - it can only minimally get resolved or may not at all..?
For reference, attaching pics taken from YT:
MKBHD(at 9:31) and Danny Winget(at 1:41). Marques explained it pretty well on why it might not!
Edit: S20 Ultra users with the OTA updates( "ATBR" & "ATC2") installed can check and report..
so in Germany i got a Day1 update but it seems to be only the March security patch. the update was a Little less than 500mb.
the autofocus is kinda slow in compare to the s10+
and the autofocus has some Trouble tu Focus with zoom 5+ and distance lower than 5 meters
update:
in the patchnotes
- better cam perf.
- enhanced security 4 the device
Version G99BXXU1ATBM
431.19 MB
so hopefully there will be another update to improve the cam

I think that this update fixed the problems with the main camera when capturing photos with a recognizable face. I have tested it yesterday and it does not change the colour of my face or make it smoother.

I have already read some feedback from gsmarena who stated: According to TizenHelp, users are reporting improved function of both autofocus and manual focusing on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.
- It is nice to hear that but we need to wait for some comparisons or a wider update push. I have also watched how Marques explained the narrow point of focus on the Ultra and he might be right but that hardware masterpiece has other sensors to help the main one with information so maybe it can be fixed with software update. I have already asked German Samsung support about when the update is going to roll out because the camera is almost useless and that I am very disappointed about it. Of course I also wrote that if it does not happen before the return window closes, they will get that hardware back, simple.
EDIT: They just answered that they do not know when the update is going to roll out. They also did not respond to me being disappointed so I asked for Tier 2 Support or Customer Relations response.
EDIT2: This was already a Tier 2 answer and they do not know on their own when it is going to arrive because it is being rolled out without properly informing all Samsung Sites.

Autofocus/manual focusing improved, but I think let's not mix it up with the Plane of Focus limitation i.e. after the object is in focus, clicked, the pic is sharp on few places but blurry elsewhere on the same object.
As for Samsung support(customer support?) about Samsung, I will rather ask my Pets about it..

I know that support from such big companies is mostly not helpful but if they throw a voucher for something, then there is at least something useful you get if they cannot help. As I have written before, the other lenses could help with the Plane of Focus. Maybe Samsung will figure it out. Samsung integrated Google Duo so let Google guys improve the camera software :silly:
They're not going to be able to fix the narrow focus depth of close up images. Have you ever noticed that "fast" zoom lenses with constant aperture for cameras are invariably heavy and expensive? That's because they cram in several aspherical lens in there to be able to maintain the wide aperture. But on a camera lens, you can adjust the aperture if you want to increase the focus plane. The Ultra has a variable zoom with fixed aperture, so it's a trade off. They may be able to improve the focus hunting issues but I doubt it will ever match the speed and precision of the dpaf of their cheaper siblings.
For this reason I changed my pre-order at the last minute to the s20 plus. My subjects are typically closer range shots that are moving (my kids), so auto focus performance is important.

That's an artifact of the sensor size, the only way to fix it would be artifical sharpening or taking multiple photos and combining them.

That!
It's a feature, not a bug.
The culprit is fixed aperture.
