Can't install any kernel - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I really tried everything
But i can't seem to make any kernel on a custom rom to work on my V20
I got an LG V20 H910 with former H910PR firmware (From AliExpress)
I managed to unlock the bootloader and root it using:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/root-h910-v10m-t3664500 (great job btw, thank you so much) Now I've installed LOS 16
I updated my TWRP only until 3.2.2-1 cuz the latest won't boot, it goes to fastboot instead
My previous issue was TWRP not installing anything unless i remove "assert" or "getprop" in every ROM or zip i install (it shows "this device is .") But i managed to fix it by updating TWRP
Now I'm getting annoyed by this dreaded screen retention and i want to install a kernel
I tried both LOS 15.1 and 16 (currently using LOS 16) by installing the correct kernels (Either H910 or US996) but they all just boot to fastboot after installation
With the guide above i noticed that the provided stock rom has a custom kernel (mk2000) and it managed to work
But on custom roms i can't make Gamma kernel to work
Is there something wrong I'm doing here? Or is there any way to fix this?
I tried to go to both the thread of the kernels but no one doesn't want to respond :crying:

Los has it's own kernel with the rom, however if you you want use gamma ask for assistance in the appropriate gamma kernel thread

So does that mean i can't just straight up install the kernel with TWRP?
i did try to chat in the official threads but no one seemed to respond, that's why i put this the general Q&A instead

if the kernel won't install via twrp then try a different version of twrp. If that doesn't work then maybe there's a problem with how you unlocked the bootloader and or the firmware you loaded on the phone.

Well the kernel was successfully installed on twrp, and 3.2.2-1 is as far as i can go, but the system just won't boot after that, it just does to fastboot. The kernel was considered compatible because twrp did accepted it
But i am still looking for other ways to at least just install this

Problems flashing kernels AND

So i just bought my Lg G2 a few days ago, i instantely rooted it and installed Vanir, things have been great minus a few small bugs...but being i am a crack flasher i tried a few other roms such as Omni, Beanstalk and more but when i try these other roms i have no issues except that they always boot themselves on when you charge them..you can turn the rom off, plug it in and surely enough it automatically boots itself up, i've tried plugging it in then turning it off and the results are the same. the only rom that will charge while off and remain off is Vanir but i have experienced a few small bugs on then
ANYWAY the main resaon I started this thread is because every and any kernel i try to flash doesnt flash, they all fail...can anyone shed some light as to why all the kenels are failing on me?
Which kernels are you flashing? Which variant are they for? Erich variant do you have?

If you are using TWRP, flash Philz touch recovery (see android original development). It may be a recovery issue.

Bump
Does anyone have any idea why I can flash majority of the roms available but I cannot flash one single custom kernel?
I've tried the latest TWRP. an earlier version and i've tried Philz touch...none of which will allow me to flash any of these custom kernels available for my VS980....and yes the kernels are meant for said device. There is also maybe one or two roms that won't flash either
sorry to bump this again but i still cannot get any kernels to flash
I am certainly rooted as i have flashed multiple roms but are there any other steps or processes i need to do in order to flash a kernel on this phone? i've owned about 9 android phones and every time i've rooted and unlocked the bootloader, installed a custom recovery i was able to flash roms and kernels with ease...as i've mentioned i've tried different versions of recoveries and everythng and no mattter what every kernel i try to flash fails...its not the end of the world but i would really like to try some of these custom kernels out and dunno how to do it...
am i missing something?

[Q] Unable to boot Stock based ROMS [D800]

Hey everyone, sorry if this question has been answered already. I have sifted through pages and pages in this forum and haven't found a solution for my D800.
My G2 is rooted, with TWRP installed. I was successful in flashing Paranoid Android v4 beta 4, and 5. The problem arises when I try to flash LG Stock based ROMS. After TWRP says flashing was successful and I try to reboot, the screen shows LG logo for a second and turns blank!! That's it just a clear black screen, and the ROM doesn't boot at all.
The ROMs I tried and failed to boot:
1. Aeon
2. Korean stock based rom
3. Scott's CleanROM
4. Rayglobe 3.2
5. Rayglobe Flex ROM v4
Now, I know that sometime ROMs take time to boot on the first run, so I even tried leaving it at the blank screen for 15-20 mins with no result. Since it has been the same result for multiple ROMs, it definitely isn't a bad install or a bad ROM download either. I hope not
Is there anything I am missing in the steps? All ROMs were installed after factory resetting through TWRP (no dirty flash). I am baffled with this, please let me know if I need to revert to software version "d" for these ROMs to work?
TIA

Did you factory reset after as well? If I recall correctly Paranoid Android is AOSP. What kernel are you running?
sounds like you are onn the 10o update. You will need to flash back to stock 10d with lg flash tool and then root and install recovery again. Then you should be good to go on flashing roms. I know that some of the newest versions of TWRP and Philz have issues flashing some roms too so that may also be the cause. If you downgrade the recovery you have to the version right before it may fix your issue also

Exactly, AOSP ROMs are booting up fine but not the Stock based ones.. I am not flashing any kernels, just the ROM, so I'm assuming it will run on either the stock kernel or the kernel included in the ROM zip?
Have you been successful in installing such ROMs? Am I missing something in the wiping part? Only been doing the factory reset in TWRP before installing any ROM.
Check m
And make sure that you are running the stock kernel. Are you on the 10o update?

Yes I am on 10o.. Does it have issues with installing other Stock ROMs? If yes, I'll try to follow the thread on using LGFlash tools, I've never done that before. Hopefully its not much difficult to follow the instructions.
That is one of the easiest guides to follow. Be sure to follow the correct set of instructions(depends on carrier) and download the the 10d version.

I'm stuck in the process! Can't change the com port number to 41. The guide is pretty easy to understand. But when I put my phone is download mode and try to change the com port number, it says I don't have the write privileges for this device's setting. I've tried it on both Win 7 and Win 8 laptops, with LG mobility drivers installed.
Is there something in the phone settings I need to enable so that I get the write privileges to change com port number?

Yay!!! Finally did it!
Issue 1: If faced with write privileges for com port (tried successfully in Win 8)
Solution: After going in to com port properties, click "change settings" and there is the option to change com port number.
Issue 2: Once the port number was changed to 41, rest of the instructions are easy to follow on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633150
Once on D80010d, I rooted with ioroot22, and installed recovery using FreeGee. Just installed Rayglobe 3.2 minutes ago, and it finally booted up!!!
So, the bottomline is that go back to D80010d if you wanna play with Stock based ROMs! I flashed with TWRP 2.6.3.3, so the fault is not with the recovery. That much I can confirm
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Thread solved I guess.
Great. Glad to hear it.

Thanks for the input. Before I flashed back to D80010d today, I installed older versions of Philz and TWRP but neither helped. So downgrading was sort of a compulsion, in my case at least.
and the moral of the story is, unless you are getting an android version upgrade in the update, do not take the update.

Need Help Flashing Custom ROMS

Hi guys,
I'm a newbie in this rooting world. So please bear with me. I know this forum will help me solve my problems and answer my questions so here goes.
The problem is I can't flash any rom. I'm having this error
"E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/Download/CM12/CM-12-20150802-NIGHTLY-D802.zip"
What I did was
-Rooted my phone
-Install AutoRec to install TWRP Recovery
-Install quickboot
-Reboot into recovery
_Update my TWRP recovery to 2.8.7.1 bumped
-Backed up my everything
-Wipe everything (except Internal Storage)
-Install CM12 alongside with GAPPS
Now everytime I flash a rom I end up with that error.
My device is
LG G2 D802 Rooted Running on 5.0.2 Stock ROM.
Can somebody help me please? It will be much appreciated.
Thanks XDA Members.
Can you also suggest some good ROMS compatible with my device?
Thank you.
I got exactly the same message on my d802.
Unfortunately, I wiped my system and it rebooted with a "security error" message. I had to restore a stock LP ROM using LG's Mobile Support Tool program.
@audit13 and @markl098 official cm12 might be still using the old loki method of installing so it will need the jellybean bootloader. Most of the times if you get that error you are using a rom which is using loki on a kitkat bootloader. I suggest to use nevax bootloader changer and flash the rom. You might also need another modem for it. Search it on the forum which modem you need for the official cm12, you probably need kitkat aosp modem from dr87.
I also suggest to look for the newer roms in the forum here in xda as most of them are all using new caf sourcecode and running on lollipop bootstack with bump. (Ofcourse kitkat bootloader)
Audit13 the security error probably happend because you wiped the system but the boot.img remained and loki isn't signing the boot.img with an lg key so it will result on kitkat bootloader in an security error. With bump that problem is fixed as the kernels are getting signed with an lg key. I hope you guys can flash now happy further with no probs

Thank you so much for your answer. I can't find much info on that regard. Things becoming more clear now. Can I ask one more question?
I was on stock, decide to try SlimSaber, which is quite nice by the way. So, I rooted my D800 and got TWRP. Then flashed Loki's lollipop bootstack (bootstack-d800-LP_30d-loki-signed.zip) recommended by OP and ROM and GAPPS. Everything works perfect. Now if I want go for 4.4.2 based stock ROM for example I should flash K.K bootstack before? I found this file - bootstack-d800-KK_20y-v1.1-blastagator-signed.zip. So is this mandatory always flash bootstack before upgrading downgrading, right? I can't find any detailed info on this in XDA unfortunately.
Thank you for your time.
Greetings.

Ehhm. You can try it. The reason why is because the use of bootstacks became more since lollipop. You can try it. Perhaps it works else you could always autorec and then folllow the guide on how to flash. I can test it perhaps also for you later. Ofc with my d802 version but I am still underway from heading back so I can test jt only from wednesday
@audit13 no problem. :good: enjoy

LG v20 (Verizon Help)

So I just bought a verizon LG v20 which has 8.0.0 on it. Simple question. Can I still downgrade using upercut and LGUP and then use dirty santa. I found the correct Firmware on lg-drivers and have it all ready and set. Some posts are saying that you can some people say you can't downgrade. I am just trying to figure out which is right. YES I searched multiple posts...
1. Can I downgrade when the phone arrives?
2. Can I still use dirty santa when I downgrade?
3. Why do some say patched and some say not? Is that because some models firmware are non-downgradeable?

Yes you can downgrade, probably only need to use the regular LG up, downgrade to a security patch prior to Dec 2016, follow the dirty santa instructions, flash updated twrp, within twrp standard wipe, format data, flash rom, flash magisk

Its that easy?
Yes. But I'll suggest before hand updating to the firmware version of your choice, and dumping it with LGUP (same tool you use to flash firmware packages). There's a lack of flashable stock ROMs for the v20 variants, so you'll be stuck on an ancient firmware version after rooting. Once you've flashed the DirtySanta engineering bootloader, you can flash back part of the dump (minus aboot and recovery), allowing you to keep TWRP/Engineering Bootloader while still having the system version of your choice.

Yea, but those updated stock custom build also pack a bunch of other crap you may or may not want. Its much better to start from fresh, do your own debloating, then pick and choose what you want. There's also the side benefit of not having to deal with AFH's godawful download speed. The VS995 has stock KDZ so restoring from stock isn't a big problem, but having your own dump on hand let you get back to the latest (or close to latest) system update and skip 2-3gb of OTAs

I just want a rom like Lineage OS or something that allows custom sets for my device. I am getting confused? just flash this rom with lg up, then use dirty santa, then install the rom correct? I haven't rooted since my nexus 6p since vzw locks the pixel and pixel 2 xl bootloaders -_- ... attached a screenshot of the rom.. its got 3k downloads and is marked 2016-12-24 3691(downloads) SO I assume I flash this first. then do the dirtsanta exploit? My last question is how do I install roms with these newer devices? Do I format everything(I got an sd card) and just keep the sd card clean? Would love some info!
Heres the link to the screenshot I tried adding. https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-vs995-firmwares/#tab=firmwares

You have to install Magisk/SuperSu to keep TWRP, otherwise the system will replace it with stock recovery everytime it boots. If you already have the Engineering Bootloader installed by following DirtySanta up to Step 3, just reboot into fastboot (hold volume down while phone is off, plug cable) and reflash TWRP with fastboot.

Well, if you want to try old nougat roms, search for deluxe rom 7.0 or elite rom 7.0 (that was the name iirc), but whatever old version you use, be sure that your bootloader version and modem versions are the same (in case rom installs modem too- like in alexndr's devbase), if they aren't same then you will get no signals and baseband unknown.. Good luck
Warning : some old roms caused imei unknown/efs corruption (i.e : superman rom iirc)

You can't install custom roms through odin, custom roms can only be flashed in twrp.
You can only flash stock roms (having the same bootloader version as one already installed on your phone or higher) in odin.

I'm trying to return, already have installed with success twrp and tested some roms from xda (tks a lot for then, all of them are awesome) but I want to put in use this phone to my grandson play pokemon go and the game don't run on rooted phone's, I install a rom apparently official but still showing phone have non authorized software ( I guess is twrp). I'm almost giving up, too much headache for a game. Think I can't revert.

I don't play games on phone lol, but pokemon go shouldn't be detecting magisk's system-less root.. ofcourse I'm not updated on it though.
For a fully non-rooted or system-less rooted, and debloated rom, use alexndr's devbase for max compatibility and stability. You need to clean flash stock rom (with matching bootloader version as already in your phone or higher) in odin first. Then reboot phone in download mode again to flash twrp in odin, then boot directly into twrp from dl mode (DON'T ACCEPT SYSYEM MODIFICATIONS PROMPT IN TWRP !! AND TICK DON'T ASK AGAIN) and format data > type yes under wipe option. And stay in twrp..
Then go to alexndr's devbase thread and download the devbase rom zip from the androidfilehost page CORRESPONDING TO YOUR CURRENT BOOTLOADER VERSION and flash it in twrp. Then flash latest magisk in twrp.. and boot into system ..
After that you should have a systemlessly rooted debloated stock rom. Any game or software that doesn't checks hardware knox tripping status should work per my knowledge. If you follow the exact steps above and still that game/app isn't working that means its either checking knox hardware status or bypassing magisk's safetynet protection.

You need to restart because twrp may not be in systemless root mode.
Also, to see your bootloader binary version, go to download mode and it will say alongside it in like
B:6 K:7 S;7
Where B is the bootloader version number. Good luck.
