Multitasking/RAM - Google Pixel 4 XL Real Life Review

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Changes apps very quickly.

if you keep swapping apps it just reloads the apps it looks like they dont keep apps open in ram

I occasionally get 1 app to reload, nothing dramatic.

But how long ago was the last time you went to that app when it reloaded? And how many apps did you go through before going back to it? I haven't noticed any reloading for relatively recently used apps like within the hour or within 9 apps.

At least it's much improved over the 3 XL. I know it's not the exact same speed test but there was over a minute difference between the 3 XL and iPhone XS. This time it was only 26 seconds.

Just saw another speed test / RAM management test.

This does show some harsh RAM management.

I still have my 3XL and this is night and day.
The 3XL got much better with the Android 10 update but I have no problems with the 4XL

got twice message. memory running low, close background apps, and few times notifications from gmail freeze when expanded and cant retract back for 2 couple seconds

I'm really enjoying the 4XL, coming from the original Pixel XL. But tonight I got an onscreen message about "memory running low, close background apps." This was while I was using the camera to scan a check for a banking deposit.
I don't remember ever seeing a message like that before on any of my Android phones. Weird.

How's this comparing to P3XL?
On the latter, it's driving me nuts, even with all disabled and on gaming
Can't even hold 3-4 chrome tabs

Maybe the RAM enchantments might help for those getting that message. I have yet to see one in my usage.

Agreed. Same going from a 2XL to the 4XL. RAM management is way better. I've yet to have a single problem.

Noticeably better for me. I had a pixel 3 non-xl. Using a custom kernel with slmk improved memory management for me.

Anyone Else Switching from Pixel to OP5?

I'm scheduled to get my new OP5 on Friday, 6/23. I'm very excited. I'm itching to get a new phone and hope it is better than my Pixel XL.
Anyone else in the same shoes? Any concerns?
For me is the camera. I can care less about the video issues but I do need a solid camera.

I didnt switch per se, i still have my Pixel and plan to keep it as my main Android device, but the OP5 been really solid for me so im almost at the point of switching it over to being my main. This is from someone that hated OP2, 3 and 3T. This phone is pretty damn good!

Same, I'm not switching but I'm going to try it as my daily driver for a couple weeks and see how much I like it. I'm hoping it's the phone that breaks me away from my Pixel XL, the LG G6 and the S8/S8+ couldn't do it. I love my Pixel but should have known better than to get the 32gb model. Hopefully I'll love the OP5 as much!
I have an XL - interesting to see so many of us here.
My biggest concern is downgrading to 1080p. Luckily my contact lenses make my near sightedness slightly less sharp, so hopefully I don't notice the difference. I pretty much guarantee the camera is not going to touch the Pixel. Maybe get close in very bright conditions in terms of detail, but probably not HDR or low light. It also sucks that there's no 4K video stabilization. I expect the OP5 to perform even better than the Pixel does as far as using the phone goes, and it'll be nice to have capacitive keys to get some more screen real estate and not have to worry about burn in as much. Dash charge is also amazing. I'll be pissed if they don't crank out Android O in a hurry though.

I have a Pixel XL too thinking of picking a 5 up loved my OP3. OP5 seems an upgrade in every area :good:
Been playing with the OP5 for a few hours. It's a tough call. The display on the Pixel XL is noticeably better in terms of sharpness. The camera on the Pixel is somewhat better too - not dramatically if you use the correct modes on the OP5, plus the OP5 has the zoom lens and portrait mode. UI fluidity is actually a bit better on the Pixel, but it's a splitting hair's difference. The OP5 might need some more RAM management optimization, because it wasn't keeping every single app in memory like I expected it to - performed about as well as the Pixel did when swapping between apps (not games) on the phone. Dash charge is something to love though, as are the built-in OS features, and the insanely fast fingerprint reader.
Only real issue I'm having is the display seems poorly tuned. My eyes are noticing a jello/wave effect when scrolling icons and text whereas my S8+, Pixel XL, and every other device I've used recently have not done that.
Overall feels more like a sidegrade than anything.

Returning it isn't ideal - 15% restocking fee. If I don't end up keeping it, I'll just resell it. I really want to like this phone, but the biggest complaint I'm having right now is the damn screen scrolling. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this, so either I'm hyper-sensitive to it, or something is up with mine.

It's the 835 which is the big improvement on the OP5 over the pixel. The rest of the hardware (screen, camera etc) are going to be better on the Pixel. You'll also have up to date android on the pixel for a couple years at least. OP forget about their old phones pretty quickly.
I wouldn't upgrade a pixel to a OP5. In fact if they were the same price I would have bought a Pixel.

At the end of the day, I preferred my Pixel over S8. The curved screen was annoying to me and so was fingerprint scanner placement. I also prefer stock Android over TouchWiz. Pixel is hands down a smoother experience.
Again, all preference. Nothing really wrong with S8.

I have switched from HTC 10. I didn't like the camera on HTC 10. However it is better than OnePlus 5. Didn't notice any performance difference as compare to HTC 10. I am missing Audio capabilities of HTC 10. I would like to take my statement back, after oxygen 4.5.2 update, phone is running really smoothly. I would say it is crazy fast.. Super duper fast far better than HTC 10. Truly amazing.

Overall speed

Would you say that the Google Pixel 3 XL is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Google Pixel 3 XL exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Yes! Compared to the Samsung S9, the Google Pixel 3 XL gives the impression that it is faster. I think this is because the native Android system used by Google Pixel 3 XL! At the same time, I played my friend's iPhone x before, but I feel that iphone x is faster. Recently I was thinking about whether I should buy an iPhone xs max.
pixel 3 xl isnt out yet...

Same here. Thought about the max but the limitations of iPhones are brutal. Eitherway , handsdown apple destroys Google in optimizations.

Fast enough in real life?
Of course, it´s a 845 Chip, blazing fast though
So I'm already noticing choppy animations sometimes when opening apps. This is really not good and unacceptable.
since /data uses F2FS
im curious to know if anyone has formatted it to EXT4 and observed a difference?
i remember using F2FS on the oneplus phones caused slowdowns and latency issues.

The animations were getting choppy, everytime I unlock the phone. I sent it back to Google for a replacement. If this issue presists, I'm just gonna return the phone.
Been using mine since day one, and it's kind of funny to me. I thought lately it was slowing down, but it's only because I'm used to it now. I played around with my Moto E4 Plus that I came from, and wow, that thing was a snail. I thought that phone was fast when I got it, and thought it was on par with much more expensive phones all the way up until I got the 3XL, but once I tried it after using the 3XL, it was night and day. I then went back to the 3XL, and boom, it was like the first day I turned it on. Blazing fast, and not one stutter or jank. It's amazing how using it 12 hours a day make you get used to the speed and smoothness. Try your old phone, and then come back. You won't take it for granted anymore like I did.

Oneplus 6t from pixel 2 xl

Hi I'm looking to change my pixel 2 xl cause of performance issues alot of lag and delay
I was thinking of Mate Pro 20 but I changed my mind after reading honest review on XDA-Developers
Is it better choice to get one plus 6t instead
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I got a 2xl and waiting for my 6t, which will be delivered tomorrow. Considered the pixel 3 but it's just a rerocked 2
I'm coming from a pixel 2xl. I was looking for something new because i started to feel apps were closing out too fast and reloading too often.
I started adding more apps. Mostly security camera and home automation apps. I wanted to see if having more RAM would help. I didn't even have any interest in the pixel 3 since they didn't upgrade the RAM
So far I've been pleased. Apps stay open longer but it seems it takes awhile for the phone to know which apps you use the most.
Battery life has been noticeably better but not by much
In screen fingerprint scanner isn't as fast as the pixel but the face unlock on the op6t is blazing.
I miss AOD and I'm surprised how often i use the squeeze for Google Assistant.
OnePlus gestures blows away both of Android navigation options. I'm happy to have the extra screen space.
Surprised how well the OnePlus screen compares to the pixel. There are more color options to adjust for your liking and the OnePlus seems to get a tad brighter. The pixel looks sharper on higher res content but barely and only if you stare.
OnePlus camera is okay. I'm not a huge picture person so the OnePlus is passable for me.
Pixel feels lighter and is easier to hold. Less fingerprints because of the material on the back of the pixel.
Right now I've factory reset the pixel to see if i can recover the performance. I bet it will be smooth again.
Hope this helps

Coming from the pixel 2xl. The 3xls notch is disgusting compared with the price of the 3xl brining not a whole lot of new things make the 3xl a definite pass. It's unfortunate that this was the fastest phone I've ever had but in a year I've reset it 4 times due to extreme lagging and slowdown recently. Battery life dropped by almost half as well. The only redeeming quality is the camera but I am willing to give that up for the time being.

Yes. It's just a repost of the one from the 6 subforum.
Functionality is the same on the 6. Same things work, and same things don't work.
We can only use the 6.1 mods. Older 5.x versions won't connect to the camera on our phones.

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the OnePlus 7 Pro under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
For those who have a pixel 3 XL and this phone, has the Oneplus 7 Pro reached the fluidity and smoothness levels of Pixel? I know in the past, Oneplus phones have had problems with stuttery scrolling or just not being as smooth as Pixel phones. Is this different with the 7 pro bc of the 90 hz display? Specifically is there an improvement in profile gpu rendering?
It is perfect. I really cannot see any stuttering. And I am veeery picky about that.
I came to this phone from a Razer phone which had a 120hz variable screen.
This screen is great! Best of both worlds, smoothness of 90hz and coloura and brightness of OLED.
It's been the smoothest phone I've seen honestly.
I currently have Pixel 3XL, Samsung s10+ and OnePlus 7 Pro. This 90 refresh rate works wonders.

Easily the smoothest phone I've seen, even compared to the mighty S10. Oxygen OS is seemingly a great version of Android that I'm loving.
This a dream come true...Smooth as Silk!
I've owned every Pixel phone out and this is my first OnePlus device. Honestly, I'd say that OnePlus knocked the stock android experience out of the park. It's as smooth as my Pixel 3 XL, but with 8gb of RAM, there is no stutter or delay. Even when having multiple apps open in the background, then opening the camera to snap a quick photo. I've had my Pixel 3XL straight up take around 8 to 12 seconds to open up the camera app when I attempted to either take a photo or record a video. One time, I had actually started recording a video of a friends surprise birthday party and the video was around 20 seconds in when the camera app just decided to closed out completely, while I was recording, and when I opened it back up, it never saved the video. Needless to say I was pissed. The the overall OS is better than the Pixel. You have native screen recording, scrolling screenshot (something Google claimed could not be implemented in Android Q so it would be put in Android R), and extreme customization options. Honestly the ONLY things that I miss from my Pixel 3 XL are the camera, the smart replies, and the dark themed Google App on the left home screen. the camera alone, is the reason why I keep my P3XL in my work bag. Also, since my OnePlus is the T-Mobile variant, I even have "Chat" functionality in the stock messages app, something that I'm still waiting for to roll out to my Pixel device.
totally. This 90 Hz screen wipes the floor with my Pixel 3 its insane. The experience is way smoother than on a Pixel.

While that's true. Let's not forget its a next gen phone compared to the pixel.
I've had all Pixel and OnePlus phones over the last few years. Let's not forget the Pixel is beast when it works right witch I'll say for me has been just part time. As for OnePlus I haven't had that problem. I've always regretted giving up my OnePlus phone when the Pixel comes out. I can't say the same for going to OnePlus. I have to be fair and say that Pixel camera though? when it works right
Oops I forgot I didn't own the Oneplus 5 or 5T. I also didn't own the smaller Pi El devices just the XLs

In my experience OnePlus phones have kept their performance way past the Pixel phones. Hardware has held up great compared. I can't tell you the frustrations I've had with bugs and returning phones. If you read up in many forums you'll see what I'm talking about. OnePlus lack of a great camera pales in comparison to my frustrations with the Pixel series. I have no brand loyalty either by the way. I've had most flagships including iPhones. Shoot I have the iPad pro and sold my XS Max and Pixel 3 XL recently.
@Reuben_skelz92
yeah, the newer soc probably helps, but I think the 90 Hz screen contributes the most to the buttery smooth scrolling experience. I hope there are more devices in the future with this refresh rate and that they are soon be able to build smaller screens with this tech.

Without the 90Hz i Take it over the #XL or even the 4. Google hasnt shown that their phones are beyond beta projects. I had almost every single phone from them Nexus line- Pixel. as far as I'm concerned Google hardware exists to make other phone manufacturers raise their game.
Hmmm dastest updates but takes forever n a day to address major bugs and to me has more than most others. How can the people that make the OS and do the least modifications be so bad at it. You would think they would run laps around everyone. I think they get a pass in the public because of camera and the fact that reviews go up before these major problems pop up. **** theres been major crap with the cameras going back to the original XL. I.d rather have relaible overall than when it worls right half of the time. It sucks but ill take a crappy camera over that.

I wish I could say the same. I know it's not everyone but to me it's enough people and I've been knee deep in tech before the smartphone boom. You see this from so many people like me and the YouTubers/tech people so many tune into. You don't get a rep for no reason. I never thought I'd be so accepting of a crappy ass camera having 4 kids. Google hasn't given me reason enough to stick with them after a decade of support. I think OnePlus will fix their cameras before Google gets a clue. We will see. I've had over 60 flagships and don't want to keep switching anymore.
As the people who make the os for everyone their phones should be leaps and bounds better in reliability software wise. Hell as big as Google is they need to get hardware problems in wraps too. These aren't the old Nexus days.

Multitasking/RAM

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I've been power using the N10 Snapdragon variant for a lil over a week. I'm transitioning from my Pixel 3XL, comparatively I can't tell the difference other than the amount of apps which the phone can seamlessly run and provide an over all smooth fluid switch between. This N10 with it's 8GB Ram, and 2.8ghz CPU is powerful, I have struggled to give this phone a run for it's money. I like to run multiple drawing, audio editing, and chrome tabs for hours at a time. When I'm gaming the phone stays cool and seamlessly plays my YouTube in the background, usually accompanied by several random chrome tabs + my most frequent apps social media platforms stay running and have almost no lag reopening even after hours of being untouched. Personally it blows my mind how exponentially smartphone performance overall is increasing. My Note 10 is a Beast!
A major link in the chain for the Note Legacy in my opinion.
I haven't been this pleased by Sam since the Note 5.
Comment - soooooo grateful they made the smaller N10 variant!! That N10+ is overkilled overkill and had it been the only option, Samsung would've taken another L from me this year. Been a while but after Evie launcher installation + pixel icon pack Samsung's Rom is almost visually bearable enough to look at.
!!!BEAST!!!!
Yeah, you are lucky that you have snapdragon version! Try once exynos and you will change your mind...more heat, cpu throttling, less sot etc! Only positive thing is that i have dual sim that I really need

Note 10+ /exynos 12gb ram here.
Been using it on pwer saving mode since i got it and i don't remember a single time it reloaded anything to be honest, pubg works on ultra without a single hiccup at 60fps.dead effect 2 on ultra everything runs 60fps with no hiccups.
Firefox with ublock origins and youtube on desktop mode + gaming works with no lags and the pen features makes me wonder why the hell isn't it on every single phone ever,i regularly hit 8_10hours of sot with 30% brightness and wifi, sync enabled and no gps.
No Facebook or Instagram crap though, years ago i noticed they never stop running in the background even when you turn off everything they just keep spamming requests to run (deteced with AppOps)
