Im thinking about getting a Tab 8 plus 4/64 to replace my Nexus 7 2013.
I don't see much development support for the Tab 8 Plus. Great to see TWRP and root.
Do you think there will be an XDA community for this device?
There are so few upgrade choices from the Nexus 7.

There seems to be a problem in terms of availability for the tablet worldwide, which is why very few reports have come through.
I have specifically bought this Tab 4 Plus with WiFi and 64GB storage as a Nexus 7 replacement and I am super happy with the decision. Custom recovery and root works as described. Give it a couple of weeks and I assume there will be a dedicated forum for the Tab 4 Plus here on XDA. And as soon as Lenovo publishes the kernel sources for the device, there will be many custom ROMs to choose from.
Right now, the Android on the device is pretty vanilla and serves its purpose very well.
Giving this thread a bump. Dev support for this device still seems pretty quiet. Been eyeing the 4/64 GB on eBay for $330. It ships from Korea.

Do you know if it passes SafetyNet with Magisk 14.3 and Magisk Hide or if it will require a custom kernel to hide the bootloader status?
Hey, I got myself a Tab 4 8 Plus from South Korea recently - the 4 GB RAM / 64 GB storage version. I've used CyanogenMod and LineageOS for ages on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2013, and I'm a little sad the Tab isn't supported yet. If anyone involved in development is interested, I'd be happy to help however I can with my device. I'm not familiar with Android development, however - I'd totally try and port LineageOS to this if I could.
there's a guy in the root thread that was saying he was starting a debloated ROM. lets see if he delivers. this sure is the best android tablet in the market!
Hi guys, I just got this tablet from singapore seller, but it come with chinese rom,
I'm not familiar with lenovo (use to be xiaomi fans).
Is there any tutorial available to change it to global rom? and is there any forum to discuss bugs on each rom version like on the xiaomi miui forum?
I can't find any donwloadable link in the lenovo web support.
Thanks
I did get a Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus to replace my aging Nexus 7 2013. Unfortunately, that was two months ago now and I'm still using my Nexus as this Tab 4 keeps cooking uSD cards. Apparently it's a known problem, some say hardware, some say software, some claim it was fixed with the December 2017 update, some say it's still there. Either way, I want to root this potentially sweet tablet and drop on Lineage or something custom before I give up on it, but for that I want a decent custom ROM.

Since the source code was published by Lenovo there is now a good chance to get something custom if there will be a developer to help us out building a rom.
I did read a lot of complaints about a lack of source code from lenovo, but it was released in November from what I can see. That's six months ago, so I wouldn't hold my breath for anything useful soon.
This nifty little tablet is really awesome. The almost stock android experience is nice... But the additional customisations of a custom ROM would be helpful. Right now lenovos system UI is quite picky about being modded and would FC when I try to tweak the nav bar.
yes, maybe after oreo update there will be some custom rom...

Hi i'm thinking of getting the Verizon S8 during the black friday sale, my question is:
1. From people who own it is it generally a good phone and are y'all happy with it?
2. I saw the thread about rooting the US. Snapdragon version i'd like to know if there's anything different/would stop me from rooting since ill be getting it on Verizon? PS. ill be activating it on Verizon but buying it at BestBuy in case that makes a difference.
Thanks for your help

Personally knowing what I know now I'd be looking at a different phone. These things are carrier owned locked bootloader with no unlock on the horizon. The root method sucks with it being so long and complicated, reminds of the Sony Xperia days. Plus you lose 20% battery and there's no fix because locked bootloader. The list can go on but why bother I think you'll get the point. Have fun
I would suggest you OnePlus 5T if you want root, custom roms ecc. But if you want a freaking georgous screen that stretches at it's maximum, a great camera, and overall great build and design I would suggest S8. I have not rooted it yet, and personally I don't find the need to do it. Regarding the looks I can change through substratum or through custom themes(which just install as a normal apk but change even the notification bar). As far as speed goes it is pretty good, been using it for 5months and never noticed a big lag that bothered me.

It is a great phone, with an amazing screen, it´s super fast, has good batterylife and a great camera. All of it even with a stock Samsung ROM.
That said, if you are used to rooting your phones and installing different Custom ROMs and Mods, maybe the US S8 isn´t right for you. It´s a real hassle to root and it can only be charged to 80% after root. The ROM and Mod development is very slowly picking up with Flashfire, although I´m confident we will see some more ROMs in the future, since the installbase is quite big.
So, the Phone is great on it´s own, but I personally wouldn´t buy the US Version, if I would want to use Custom ROMs or Mods.
As everybody said its a great phone as it is . No need for root and custom roms . But if you are really into these things then don't buy it from any carrier .
I know it's been 1.5 years since the phone is out but since it's cheap (235$), I am considering to buy it (A2017G model).
1. Can I root this phone in stock rom, or do I need to go with a custom rom?
2. Is the stock rom good? ... and will there be new custom roms?
3. Is it worth buying this or should I wait and buy a new phone? (My budget is low so a new phone means mid-low range for me like redmi note 5 which will come in a few months.)
Thanks in advance. :good:

I asked about rooting because I have seen that I can't use twrp or unlock bootloader before downgrading to marshmallow in a thread here, so I was just wondering about the latest update is possible to use with twrp and root.
Thanks for the answers btw.

1) You can root this phone without any problem.
2) The stock rom is decent, if you have apps that need a clean rom from no root and tampering, I suggest you stick with stock, it does everything alright.
3) It is totally worth to buy the phone, the price you mentioned is decent for a new one. There is basically no other phone within that range that has an excellent camera, stereo front facing speakers, fast fingerprint sensor, 2k amoled screen(same panel as in the google pixel 1 XL), 4gb of ram, 64gb storage WITH the ability to add a SD-card for additional storage. Lastly it comes with a SD820 which is a beast regardless and very power efficient(if you don't mind no gaming to light gaming).
I bought mine 2nd hand for 140€ a best buy for me coming from a xperia m4 aqua.
Is any work being done to get full root for the Canadian and American version of the the Samsung Galaxy 8 Plus? Full root meaning we can install custom roms and root the device while keeping 100 per cent of our battery and not being capped at 80 per cent.
Never say never but then again Samsung is very quick on patching any method people find. The worst part is people are helping them. To give you an example, yesterday a reddit user shared s8 official oreo leaked version link and few mins later some idiot posted the url in the Samsung official forum asking if they flash that would give them access to Oreo beta access.

This is the first Galaxy phone I've owned that I'm not able to root and customize and stuff. I may stop buying Galaxy's if they're gonna start locking down the phone. I want root, custom ROMS, Odin, TWRP etc. I've always done this stuff on Galaxy phones ever since the Galaxy S3. Why have they completely locked down this phone?
Is there any way to get multi-user support like what you find on stock Android?

In my opinion, Samsung is going on Apple' footstep where they care bout security more than anything especially with Samsung pay and keeping user data safe. As a user, I think it all comes down to whats more important to you and if you want more customization and rooting then Samsung is the wrong device.
I am coming from the very first Nexus devices to OnePlus and now to Samsung. For years, I enjoyed rooting and flashing custom roms. It got to a point where I got tired of it especially with OnePlus phones. Sure they let you customize and release updates quickly but they rush things and the software is buggy as h*ll with lots of security problem. Where Samsung has grown more mature now. Gone are the days when Touchwiz was ugly. Samsung Experience has lots of features and its very much customizable. It's no where near to flashing a custom rom but its stable which matters to me more.

I second this. Rooting was probably needed to get some nice benefits in earlier versions of Android. Now. The OS is mature where most of the functionality is offered by default.
Plus, capitalism at its best. US snapdragon - locked bootloaders.
I don't see the need for root anymore. Adhell blocks ads without root, and substratum is rootless. Those are the two main things I used to root for. Notes there's just no reason.

Yeah, except Samsung keeps messing with the OS and disabling stuff that's built into stock Android, like multi-user support.

Not to be the A-hole of the post but if you desire root roms twrp etc. Splurge on the rootable exynos model like 90% of others who want root do and did. I live in America and i quit buying US phones after the S5/s6 from sprint. I'm not rich by any means, more poor than anything but I save up and do son hustle and sell phones to feed my tech addiction. Just some honesty for you sir. $600-$700 will get you a like new g955F over on swappa. I'm currently selling mine so I can get a oneplus 5T or a note 8.

Full root meaning not having your battery capped at 80 per cent.

Although I have not rooted yet but I came back to Android after 2 years of iPhoning and never expecting the new ver to be Jailbroken. However, things look different now and its not that I dont like Android but I safely assumed that after 6 + months of release, there would be a full fledged list of roms so much so that I might have a hard time choosing. Galaxy/Samsung to me was like the root would be released the day the phone was even named

Hey guys!
I recently bought the S10+ been wondering why there are only 2 custom Roms available.
Normally you have thousands and more after a few month and you can't even decide which one to take.
Greez, skrippi
It's a fairly new device lol
Ok. I normally had the feeling that on other devices it went much faster. But ok THank you!
Compared to OnePlus devices for instance it is true, development starts as soon OnePlus releases a device ( OP7pro for example).

Just read about how root is achieved on S10, then you will get an idea as to why there are so few custom roms.
S10s one ui has everything so why do you want a rom thats gonna be full of bugsand unstable just buy a oneplus if you want roms

Because the roms do mostly have much more features and give you more control over your phone.
Besides my roms used in past have always had a better battery life than the original firmware.
