I have been using signal as my constant text app for some time now. Mainly due to end to end encryption over data messaging. And then the texts are standard sms. But I'm finding more issues over time with it. What are people's favorite texting apps to use on the N9?

Yaata or Textra.
What is it about yaata that you like? I used to use Textra but had several issues where it wouldn't send pictures.

I like the all the customising it has. Had a similar problem with Textra that's when I went to Yaata.
The other one that's good is Messages by Google.

What issues are you experiencing with the Signal app?
Will Google Assistant read your texts aloud, with Signal?
I love Textra for its customization and the GUI itself. I've been using it for years, across many phones, but Google Assistant will no longer read SMS aloud from third party SMS apps.

Textra or messages. Textra has worked perfect for me for years. It's clean, very customizable, and zero issues.

I've actually never used the Google Assistant feature to read my texts aloud to me. So I'm not sure. I'll be to try it and see. I doubt it will, but worth a try. I loved signal but lately I'm having more and more issues with the picture messaging portion of the app. They seem to constantly fail. And I've used Textra before. In some ways I miss it. But I do love the secure messaging aspect of signal. So I'm torn.
I don't need encryption or all that fancy ****. you wanna read my boring ass texts? Want to read that I'm asking my daughter how her algebra test went or that my wife is asking if i want gray or grey walls? fine. read away. I use samsung text about 20% of the time but I like google hangouts because i can view the text in real time on the web browser and answer back.

I mean you should care lol. Your privacy is YOUR privacy. Why should anyone else have the ability to own YOUR privacy? I know I don't like seeing ads that are related to things I've been texting friends about.

I prefer not having my information I send used for ads, also, I like the fact that it isn't shared over multiple sources of companies that are able to buy my data. Carriers can't read my messages so they don't sell my texts now. It's more of the idea I guess, that I'm not used to increase the companie's bottom dollar more.

I purchased an evo for both me and my wife. A friend of mine did the same as well. It seemed like a good deal at the time and the phone seems to be good quality overall...
However, when messaging back and forth quickly, messages disappear from the thread and cannot be seen in any way. All that I receive is a notification. This has happened for all of us. Messages are also often received in the wrong order.
Would the situation be any better if I was using plain android instead of the buggy sense UI? It looks like the froyo rom is making good progress.. I'm going to try it, but if it's still as buggy as it is stock, Sprint will be getting 4 EVOs returned.
Try another messaging app like handcent or chomp. You have choices.
No problems here, and I'm on my 2nd Android phone. Both have worked great with no problems such as yours.
Seems like more of a rant then a request for help. that being said, my family has 5 Evo's between us and we have had not one complaint with the SMS. possibly sprint service in the area? i know when i'm in smaller towns the sms seems to lag, almost like its stuck in queue somewhere before being sent to me.
good luck mate!
Use Handcent. Problem solved. The stock app is slow and sucks.
If you hate it, go back to the iPhone where you obviously came from?
Now to try to find a question to answer within all that complaining....... hmmm... oh yes, I'm having issues with the SMS coming in odd orders occasionally. I did not ever experience this with my Hero.
So what I can derive from that is that this particular release of Sense, which is NOT Android, has a bug. You need to differentiate between the OS and the VERY deep reaching Sense UI that HTC puts on top.
I'd tell you to wait for the ROM development to pick up, but something tells me you're not a tinkerer. The iPhone is a fantastic phone.. you just can't tinker as much as you can with Android. So with Android you'll have choices but you'll have bugs. It's just something I come to expect.
It's like running Linux. Sure it's trendy to hate Microsoft, but holy hell there are a lot of problems with Linux apps in design, UI, and in general stability (Note, I didn't say Linux has problems.. I said apps. Because it's the crap on top of the underlying system I have complaints with). I still love it, I just have to approach it with an attitude that it's not going to be as polished as OS X, and it's not going to be as stable either.
Welcome to Open Source and the stuff people put out with it.
After hearing everyone praise handcent I decided to give it a try myself and wow is it better. Choice is very nice

Edited to remove ranting, I'll give handcent a shot. Hopefully it doesn't lose random messages =(.
I've gotten some messages out of order, but that's about it.
If I try Handcent and somehow don't like it, is it easy to revert back to the original built-in messaging app?

Just make sure you disable notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. That's annoying.
Also, I haven't had any problems with MMS while using Handcent.

Thanks, I totally noticed that too. But it looks like if I disable notifications in the notification bar then it doesn't let me make sure it plays a sound.
Does handcent control that on its own so it doesn't matter if the sound is disabled on the stock messaging app?

Yea I have that problem alot I usually use built in messaging for MMS and handcent for all other SMS. I never have a problem receiving MMS with handcent just sending.
I prefer chomp, and have had no issues. well maybe one, or two texts out of order. Like if the sender typed a "two page" text and sent, then sent a short text the short one might come in before the second half of the "two page" text.

I ran some tests and I can send over 3g it's only when wifi is enabled. So I did some research and found out sprint only sends MMS over their connections. The default messaging app will bypass wifi and use 3g to send mms. Handcent had patched this for the Hero.
I'd like to put in a plug for ChompSMS. I hadn't used it before, but people were saying that it automatically resizes your pictures when sending MMS. Maybe this isn't a problem on the Evo, but it was on the Hero. I will occasionally get a text out of order if someone sends me a long one that is broken up into more than 2 messages. But, I really like it's interface better than Handcent, which I have also used. As far as I know, I have never had a text go missing when using Chomp.
Android is all about choice. It's really nice to have all these choices and these are FREE (as in beer).
People who respond to a group text are coming in separately on a different text...how do I have it where the conversation is all in one text? Like a chain text instead of individual ones?
I never had this issue in CM..there must be a setting for this.

Thanks for your response...is there a way to use the native messaging app?
Android group messaging out of the box is awful. Tho I wanna say it was grouping properly when I first loaded up my S5. I still would recommend ditching it for Textra. Its vastly superior.
Edit: I just checked my stock messaging app and its grouping properly...
Yes...it groups properly but when ppl respond it is going in a separate text.
Ex. When I send a group text to A and B. When A respond it does go in the group message I sent. Same for B. Are you experiencing this also?

Are you asking me if the example is how it works for me? I have NOT used the stock messaging app to send a single message. I just checked to see if it was grouping messages and it was. So beyond that, I really cant offer help.
Seriously tho, ditch it for Textra. You'll be way happier.

Yea...there is no option there for group messages under Multimedia Message setting. Yea if i can't find the settings, prob need to install Textra or a messaging app. Thanks.
What I don't understand is why Android STILL cannot handle group texting to more than 10 people.
I have a group text with a group of my friends. We have about 12 people in the group and I can't text in it. I receive all of them just fine but nothing I do let's me send a text. Different phones, different apps, different APN settings...nothing. It's a joke.

Okay i figure out what happen, I was missing a setting that now allow S5 to use group text.
Open up native messaging app, menu, multimedia messages, there should be an option that say group messaging. make sure that is checked.
For some odd reason I was missing that setting and finally found someone on the internet that was having the same issue. a factory data reset resolves the issue. yippppie.

What is a good ad free text messaging app? I used to run MIUI and LOVE their texting ap. But MIUI isn't working right for me now so switched to CM11. And while I like it the lack of a good text messenger sucks.
I send lots of MMS messages because of work, and I have 3 different gmail accounts logged in on my phone, and while hangouts is boarderline ok, the fact that I get sign in issues because of the two accounts I don't use hangouts with and then the fact that I have to select what account to send the mms over, it's just a pain, and not nearly as smooth as I think it should be, or that it was.
I have tried and tried to find the APK for the MIUI texting ap so I could just install that, but I just can't find it.
Please help me find a suitable replacement. I don't mind paying the few bucks for it, but it has to be worth it without being all bloat ware, I don't care if it has 9999 different emoticons. I just want to be able to text and send good resolution MMS.
Thanks,
PS, being able to schedule text messages would be awesome too.

If you're a Uber-texter,
Sliding Messsaging Pro:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.messaging_donate
Evolve is okay, But it's essentially a pared down version of Sliding Messagin Pro (even made by the same people)--except for the funky UI. It looks nice, but it's wonky to use:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.evolve_sms
Handcent is another beloved SMS app…It's been around for eons and is a favorite around here. It's got every feature a bacon-loving man could ever want…but it's butt ugly:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Go SMS Pro -- Essentially on par with handcent. But it has a downside. Even though it's one of the most customizable of the bunch….it takes hours to configure, and even then, just like GO Keyboard, it loves to place big buttons in places you don't want them, and it hides obscure details and features deep within the config and settings….which means that you'll find random numbers and other metadata in your inbox, not really understand what they mean, and then you'll spend the next 20-30 mins trying to figure out how to get rid of them. While this is probably the most-heavily-themed of the bunch, the themes are almost universally garbage. They're unpolished-- the whole lot of them. It's nearly impossible to find a theme that actually skins/themes absolutely everything. Dev's choice of colors, graphics, design is questionable at best. Lastly, the GO Dev team's relentless drive towards integration means that any day now, your app will update and you'll suddenly find out that your SMS app is now your dialer, your lock screen, your camera app, and your flashlight app. Oh…and they'll want you to pay for the "prime" version of every one of those apps-- with GETJAR Gold.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms
Other options:
Hangouts now integrates SMS into your Hangouts inbox.
ATT Messaging App-- will integrate voicemail, SMS, MMS, and a few other things like account notifications into a single box for you…which is really, really nice…but the app is also really, really ugly.
There are also apps like SMS Popup which will give you the chance to respond to an incoming message via a notification action or popup.
Lastly, you can just find a AOSP SMS app, configure it, and then theme it with XPosed's XTheme.
Good luck.

Hi,
I restored 16k messages with SMS Backup and Restore. Everything went pretty OK.
In one thread I have more than 7k SMS messages. Others - smaller.
Is it normal that stock SMS app can't handle that big amount of messages (7k+) without lag in one thread?
I had absolutely no problem or lag with my 3Yr old Galaxy Nexus.
Switched to Hangout and no problems or lag there. But still would like to use stock SMS app.
Any ideas?
Agree
I am having the same problem with my S4. Seems like i am not getting twitter or facebook sms for a long period of time. How can we boost the speed?
Me too. Restored 23k of messages.
It is only slow when in a thread trying to go back to the main list. Otherwise it is ok.
Honestly you're asking for trouble leaving all the messages on the phone. I had a Samsung Infuse and kept tons of messages on it. One day I stopped receiving messages. After I deleted all my messages, I started receiving them again smh
Why not use Hangouts? Any reason for the preference to the stock app? I cannot go back since it does not look that great (UI)...
Also, I am curious to know why you need to track so many text messages... I delete them on a weekly basis.
Messaging should be fast. Hangout requires 1-2 taps more than stock app to do same tasks.

Hey, don't judge how people choose to use their phones. Some want all their messages stored, some erase some of them, some erase all of them. It's nobody's business why and certainly sanity is not assessed by the amount of SMS on your phone.

I also don't delete emails in my Gmail account since the start of the Gmail service. Beacuse Google said "you will never need to delete your email". I don't delete my corporate emails as well. I applied the same to text messages. It worked so far: my previous phone (Galaxy Nexus) handled without problems. Today in Note 4 - only Hangout app handles them without a lag.
Absolutely no intentions of future revenge or smth.

Email is different. It not load all in your device.
SMS wise is not, you need full load. Without delete it just equal to find trouble itself.

Switched to Hangout and no problems or lag there. But still would like to use stock SMS app.
Any ideas?

What is it about the stock app that you prefer? I was using mysms for a while between note 4 and tab 4 and then switched back to the stock Messages app and the lag was a bit much for me. Conversations taking 5-10 seconds to load, I had to wait to start typing for a few seconds otherwise I would get a crazy mix of the first few words, etc. There are several alternatives in the play store though, I'm currently trying out textra and haven't had any issues, lag or otherwise.
Now I use Messenger from Google
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
Better than both stock and hangouts.

Just got my S10+ this week, and have been busy playing with settings, etc..I'm coming over from the Note 8 (AT&T).
Question for everyone. Do you prefer the built in Samsung Messages app, or Google Messages. I like both, especially now with the dark them more readily available.
What makes me lean more towards Google Messages is the ability to get messages on the web/browser. Was using it all the time on the Note 8.
Wanted to ask if anybody has switched back/forth between the two messaging apps, and if they have encountered any issues? I had switched from Google Messages back to Samsung's message app on the Note 8, and my messages were being sent to the wrong person. That's not a good situation to be in. I ended up switching back because of that.
Also, I noticed there is an updated apk for Samsung messages. My S10+ is using v 10.0.10.111. Looks like they are up to v 10.0.20.37. Anybody install that apk? Any good/bad things in there?
TIA
Coming from an S7 edge i was forced off Google Messages due to the handling of group messages. Sometimes it would work but other times texts that belonged in a group would come in separately. I would then have to click to download the text before it popped back into the group. Other times those texts would show up as expired (even though i just received them) and i would never see what it was. Needless to say i couldn't use it anymore so i ended up using Samsung Messages which never has that issue. Now that i'm on S10+ i'm tempted to try Google Messages again in hopes that it works the way is should as i do prefer it over Samsung Messages just due to the look and of course the web messages.
I've been flip-flopping between: Textra, Google Messages, and Samsung messages.......I've decided to stick with Google Messages.
The Samsung app, feels dated.... I do like the notifications I get when sending to other (At&t) users using the Samsung messaging app (tells when read, or they're replying...ect...), but I only have 1 person out of my 200+ contacts that it's worked on (my 17yr old son, who hates the Samsung messaging app). Plus, it just feels dated. No swipe to delete and long messages require you to "read more".
Textra is the lightest of the bunch, and I've been using for the past 4 or 5 years..... It's also the most customizable. But, Google has upped their game on the last release and incremental updates. It just feels "native" to the phone now. I also like the fact when you receive a PIN number, it recognizes this and copies just the PIN for you.
Google Messages gets my vote
BTW: No issues with group messages for me on the Google Message app
I like the Google messages app very much, but since the update to OneUI I have been using the Samsung version as it's good enough and themes the same way as the other Samsung stock apps, which I like a lot.
I prefer Truecaller messages because of its spam feature..
I love Google messages over Samsung. It worked perfect when i was with ATT. Now that i'm with Verizon I've had issues with google messages. They would come through late or not come at all. Switching to Samsung messages seemed to clear this issue up, as far as i know. No one has said they texted me and i didn't reply. Although that doesn't mean its working correctly, i may not have been aware of missing texts.. Anyone else had any issues with Verizon? i read somewhere a while back that Verizon text messages only worked right when using Verizon messages app. Not sure why that is... Or if it's true. If anyone can shed any light on whether there is, or is not an issue with Verizon messaging if not using Verizon app.

Been using Google Messages for last like 2 years and never seem to have had any problems on Verizon besides the typical sending and receiving from an iPhone of videos etc
Textra every day of the week!
One more benefit of using Google messages is you can enable chat feature now.

Not in the United States. At least not yet.
It is live for 2 of my phones now
Using Google messages, but really like the ability to pin conversations to the top in Samsung app.
Sent feature request to Google..lol
I prefer Android Messages over the stock one.
I love google messages but 2 minor things why I don’t use it on my s10 .
1. Wish google messages had schedule send sms feature . I use that quite a bit . No where in google messenger can I find this option .
2. The notification doesn’t have a pop up view bubble, quick read notification come on the top of the screen when I receive text . Couldn’t find a way to get google messages to do that like stock app notification does .
If there is a fix for both I’d switch back to google messages.

I prefer Samsung over Google mainly because of the ability to pin conversation and star message, the pop up bubble.
If Samsung had scheduler that would be awesome.
There's Qsms which is quite good but I don't want additional apps installed when Samsung messages works atm .
I use Samsung messages at the moment. But the one thing I really miss from Google messages is swipe to archive conversations...I liked to be able to hide conversations I don't use a lot without having to delete them.
