The functionality of the navbar can be modified extensively. You can make it autohide like the dock in OS X or the taskbar in windows, you can add custom buttons to it, change the location of the buttons, change what the buttons do and give them longpress functionality, and so forth.
But you can't make it do the one thing that makes PIE brilliant: be always hidden, and pop up instantly as you slide from an edge onto a button, and simultaneously and instantaneously disappear and activate the button as you lift your finger.
So I like the PIE metaphor, but I don't like its semicircle shape or the fact that you can't customize it. Therefore, how can I give the navbar the functionality that PIE has, underlined above? Or, not as good but still better than default PIE, how can I make PIE flat instead of semicircle?
Personally I hate PIE, find it annoying. I hope it never finds a way into AOSP.

That's fine. It's also completely irrelevant lol... I'm just looking for info on how I can modify the navbar to have PIE functionality (or alternatively, how to change PIE to a flat shape like the navbar).
You're right. I probably shouldn't have posted.
I've been wanting the same thing. Hopefully its possible.

You know you can disable it right? Even on PA you don't have to use PIE if you don't want to.
why not simply using tablet ui. you get one small combined bar, left side buttons right side status informations and notifications.
personally i love the pie idea *not the flat bar* coz of full screen gaming..

Because that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. It doesn't feature what I explained above..."the one thing that makes PIE brilliant: be always hidden, and pop up instantly as you slide from an edge onto a button, and simultaneously and instantaneously disappear and activate the button as you lift your finger."
It's the combination of not being on the screen ever except for a split second, and the ability to slide onto a button and lift up to activate it.
You are a developer, do you know what I would have to modify to make the navbar function like this? Or, alternatively, to make PIE in a flat, navbar-like theme instead of sci-fi semicircle?
I think PIE beats any cyonegen ROM functions...PIE will end up being part of android OS in the future, its so simple and clean, it can't be annoying because the blackberry z10 utilizes touch/swipe everything to use the phone..

I think another idea about Pie, would be to have a Navbar that comes up like pie. I mean, that when you drag the finger up from the bottom, rather than having a semicircle (pie) shape, you could have the a rectangular bar with buttons (something like the nav bar). So rather than dragging the finger diagonally to the buttons, the user could drag up(start rectangular pie) and then drag to the left or right.
I know it sounds a bit wonky, but I think it's a neat idea. I would make a few conceptual images later today. IMO pie in it's current form is amazing. I am really looking forward to see where Pie development goes.
I believe AOKP has a navbar option that auto-hides it with a small trigger to bring it back up, similar to the Windows auto-hide taskbar option.

That's EXACTLY what I'm describing. I love PIE, I don't love the semicircle shape, I prefer a bar shape. At the same time, you can customize the navbar but you can't customize PIE, so I'd like to just give PIE functionality to the navbar.

Ya a lot of ROMs do. It doesn't really accomplish anything like what PIE does (as described in my posts above). That's why I'm trying to give PIE functionality to the navbar.
It doesn't really seem like it would be very complicated to theme PIE into a flat bar shape, to look like the navbar. I'm willing to do the coding if someone can explain what I need to do. Really though, like I've been saying, the navbar is customizable whereas PIE isn't, so I'd prefer to code PIE functionality into the navbar.

I suppose there's some difference. I use LMT to get PIE controls on CM 10.1 (the default implementation is pretty limited) and it's not much different from the AOKP feature I mentioned. I hope you find what you're looking for.

No it is not. The topic of this thread is about whether it is possible to create a hybrid of pie and the navbar with the appearance of the navbar but with the functionality of PIE. If you wish to discuss the navbar, you are free to discuss it in your own thread.
Furthermore, this thread is in the Q&A section. OP asked a question, so your post should answer his question. This is not General Discussion.

Why not send an email to the PA developers? The codes should be available, so all you really need to ask is which section of the code affects PIE.

Thanks but it's not at all what I'm trying to accomplish. People have offered up various alternatives so I should be clear:
What PIE does is very unique, and things like hidden navbar and button savior are entirely unlike it. It's the mechanism of sliding from an edge > buttons appear > lift finger > button activates as the menu disappears. It's a very brilliant, modern paradigm, seen in UIs like Ubuntu Phone

Hey. I have always wondered, why is it not possible when having transparent navbar in the apps? Just look at LG G2, its transparent in the camera and on the homescreen, so why isnt it possible? Or is it to hard to code?

Ahaa yea i have also seen it in chrome browser with paranoid, but as you say not on purpuse, more a bug.. But i think maybe the people that are more intrested in these codes and things and more experience than me should look in G2s framework and see what the can find Its transparent in the camera as you can see on pictures.
Slimbean and Odyssey have it, that's why I stick to them...I love that feature. It's my alternative to pie, trans navbar and hidden and trans sbar. I'm on Odyssey now and love it just as much as I did illusion on 4.2, illusion was also based on slim. I've attached a pic of my home screen, to give you an idea.

I had that feature once, don't remember the Rom but when I enabled it, it made it somewhat harder to navigate because very often the background is white or a very light color. Another option is to change the height of your nav bar in settings, other than that try PIE.
Fwiw, I prefer the lack of transparency on the nav bar in apps.

Okey. Yea i guess that feature is not ment to be working.
I have carbon now, but it hasnt the PIE, so i guess i have to go with the regular bar.
The reason is because most apps do not draw behind the status bar. So even if it is transparent. It will still show as black because there is nothing behind it.
That is why for those with the transparent notification it only works on the launcher, lock screen & a few apps.
On previous phones I have had some modifications include stretching apps out so that they are behind the status bar resulting in a transparent bar always working however I'm not sure I've seen any such mod for the nexus 4

The home screen icon "customization" is pretty disappointing. No support for icon packs? Lame. I wonder if Smart Bulletin will be worthwhile enough to keep me from switching to Nova like I always do.

Actually if themes add support for LG Home it will, only found 1 theme which does ;}
If only they included a way to make the on screen navigation buttons smaller. Guess we'll have to rely on eXposed.

I do believe the original poster was asking about rounded corners throughout the UI, not icon shapes. Though I may have missed what was in his deleted post. Besides apps like Roundify, some substratum themes do okay with rounding corners also. I suppose he could try those, too.

No, I don't think it does. Not enough to matter anyway. Of course ultra bling type themes might not help much. I'd rather have a little drain than blinding white apps.

Nav bar apps in play store will theme navbar.
I tried the navbar apps, but the 6T memory management seems to keep killing the app. Super annoying with 8 god damn GB of RAM. I set the navbar to amoled black, and it eventually reverts back to default.
