Hello everybody.
I'm on Android 8.1 (not rooted) and my tablet seems to "forget" various settings. Tried wiping cache partition, factory reset, but to no avail.
A few examples:
-Startup sound ("Play power on ringtone" option), although unchecked still plays on every boot
-"Open with" can't register any choice made... each time i try to open a link, i'm asked to select browser. It doesn't matter if i select "just once " or "always", next time it asks me again. Changing default browser in settings doesn't make any difference. Also, it gives me an option to open with an unnamed "browser" with a generic icon. When i select this, i get a "Use a login to open" message and nothing happens!
-Nova Launcher (Prime) crashes every time i attempt to get into Notification Badges settings (i've used Nova for many years on various devices and never had a similar issue).
-Facebook: even though i turned the one-tap login option for my accounts, it keeps asking for password every time i try to login (this also never happened with any of my numerous devices in the past or my other current devices).
Anybody else facing similar problems? Any ideas on how to solve these?
Again, tablet is fresh, no hardware issues found with Lenovo's diagnostic tool, not rooted.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

This may seem dumb to people who know a lot more about development than I do, but I had an issue that I was having a hard time with and came up with a solution that worked. So, I wanted to share it in case anyone else has the problem.
Background: My phone was rooted. I had side loaded some apps including my favorite keyboard that I use on my Galaxy S called TouchPal. There is a whole thread on installing alternative keyboards in the development section.
After I side loaded TouchPal and followed the instructions in the alternative keyboard thread, I was getting consistent FCs and system dumps. My KF wouldn't let me do anything for more than a few seconds without FC and system dump. The system dump is what was really killing me. I couldn't access anything because the device kept going back to the dump after every FC.
I went to different threads and was trying to do some things like unbrick or uninstall the app through adb. But I am too dumb to follow the instructions precisely so in desperation I wondered if I could do anything in those few precious seconds I had when the device was not experiencing a FC.
Now, during this process below I was constantly having to continue after a Force Close until I could do it fast enough that the device didn't have time to FC before I had completed the process. It's seems very simple, but it did work and you have to be quick:
1. Hit the quick menu
2. Hit "More"
3. Hit "Device"
4. Hit "Reset to Factory Defaults"
After I did this, the device started to go back to a default state even though I was continuing to get FC as the device was doing this.
Eventually it was able to complete and the device rebooted. After it was done booting, I was still getting FC from the TouchPad keyboard, but I wasn't getting the system dumps, which is what really prevented me from doing anything. Finally, I was able to get to my applications and "Force Stop" the TouchPal keyboard. Then I was able to remove it.
My situation may be unique, but I hope it helps someone.
STABILITY ISSUES & CAR MODE FAULT --HELP PLEASE!!
Guys I need some help please.
The phone is great but over the past 2 months I have noticed occasional stability issues like programs suddenly opening up when you turn on screen that haven't been selected etc.etc
There is a list of 9 common faults published including some where, for eg OK google was working fine but suddenly doesnt etc.
This week in CAR MODE I noticed this unexpected error that restarting, clearing app cache, clearing app data etc will NOT fix.
Everything was working OK and I changed nothing that could have caused this.
when selecting Nav from carmode home screen it asks you "where do u want to go?", as per normal.
When I open the search text box to enter the address where I want to go, instead of verbally telling it, it accepts text characters for about 3-4 sec then suddenly just goes straight back to the carmode home screen before you finish typing the info and then hitting search!! Every time.
This is extremely annoying as it is the only accurate way to give it an address as it often miss hears the verbal names.
I cannot find anywhere a way of downloading and reinstalling carmode version 1.2.44.16607 so it can reload whatever blasted line of code is suddenly corrupted and causing the problem. if it was a separate app I could just uninstall and reinstall it but it is part of the OS and even in Galaxy apps I cannot find the specific Samsung app.
I DO NOT want to do a factory reset and wipe my phone!!, that is a BS solution just as it is on a PC for trying to fix a minor windows error.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE???
Hey all, somebody please help me before I go totally nuts. Is it only me, or everybody is experiencing this problem and just getting over it? Anybody who has used android should be familiar with this... You tap an image file, android asks you to chose an app to open with, you chose an app, happily press always, and 2 minutes later the same process again! This seems to concern image, audio, video, txt, and whatever other file! 3 extra taps whatever file format you wanna open, googled it, people where asking about this as far back as 2011!! And still, no solution looms in the horizon! Can't beleive Google hasn't realized this for so long... This problem has existed on all my devices, Samsung S2, S3, Note 3,Tab S2... Plz don't start saying go to apps, and clear defaults, coz' that only works in theory but not in practice... Android versions involved were ICS, JELLYBEAN, KITKAT AND NOW LOLLIPOP... Tried with all 3rd party file managers on the play store... No success...
Any workaround?
Never had that problem since S1 and Froyo .
Just tested on Note 3 music file open with power amp ALWAYS reboot and it opens in power amp .
Likewise with a picture open with Always = same result .
Me too never had that problem.
After making defaults for apps, after some minutes go to defaults and check that is that app is selected as default? If it is there and still it says again ask to choose defaults then its firmware issue. And if its not there then you may have some cleaning app installed, which clear defaults after some time.
sorry for bad english.
I use greenify, but AFAIK that shouldn't cause a problem of this sort...
For example, why should an eBook reader constantly attemp to open an image file?!
Obviously, this does not occur when I freeze all but one factory or 3rd party app which do the same, but I can't uninstall an eBook reader because it attempts to open image files
Two separate topics.
I have the LS777 Boost version running Nougat. I broke the screen and it sat for a couple years before I decided to replace it. Either I forgot the pattern lock or it did because I can't get past it. key points:
USB debugging IS on. It shows up as unauthorized
I can access the recovery screen
NOT rooted (yet, seeing it can be on here prompted me to fix it)
NO custom recovery
No dialer in emergency call mode
When I go from the lockscreen to the camera, take a pic, then hit the pic to preview it, then hit the share button, a bunch of social media icons pop up. If I hit one, it ALMOST goes past the lock screen trying to pull up the app to share.
I have it registered with LG, but I can't find a way to do anything with my device, let alone unlock it, you know like Samsung has.
Account device manager experiment: It had all five of my main accounts on there, but since I regularly change my passwords, I get the Account Action Required notification. If I can get it to authenticate on one of them, then I should be able to go to Where's My Device and set a new lock. I know all of the passwords I have used on my accounts, but I don't know what password I was on when this phone was active. Using my hotspot and changing the name to one of an open wifi I know I conneted that phone to, I am able to get it online (hence the notifications). I took one account and started changing the password on it, waiting 24 hours between each change and waiting a few minutes (until the notification hits my main phone at least) before powering it on. I'm on the third password and no luck.
It's theoretically sound, but I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure whether my device will authenticate the account when I get to the right password.
And yes, I know I can just wipe it. It's an old phone running Nougat that I haven't factory reset. The data on there isn't important, it's just a perfect situation to run some experiments on.
Second thing, because the issue of unlocking LG bootloaders still exists:
I have up Windows Device Manager because I'm working with various phones here. It's on the lock screen (booted normally) and is showing up under Portable Devices. If you co to the Details tab, scroll down to Capabilities, it has a second value: "CM_DEVCAP_SURPRISEREMOVALOK"
Remove a lock? Is this something we can exploit, or is LG pouring salt into the wound caused by them refusing to give us the codes to unlock the bootloaders.
Upon further research, that description in device manager is "surprise removal ok" and had to do with unplugging it.
Still, screw LG for keeping their bootloaders locked even after they decided they were getting out of the cell phone business. Makes the fact they had to shut down their forums even funnier.
On password number 4 of 5. I have a feeling this experiment isn't going to work. I'll report back after the next be password change.
I'm fairly certain I have tried every password from that account by now, and it didn't work.
However there are three other counts on there, stop I'll run the same experiment with them and see what happens.
I mentioned something about sharing pics from the gallery. From the lock screen,
1. Go to the camera icon and pull up camera,
2. Take a pic,
3. The picture will show up in the gallery preview box in the lower right corner. Press (or long-press) it and a pop-out menu will appear just above it.
4. If you pull the menu out, you'll see a bunch of links to various social media sites.
5. Click one of them. I've tried them all, but I usually pick Tumblr because it's the first one.
6. The screen changed to the app's background and it appears to start loading the app and will hang there for about 3 seconds, but then you get sent back to lock screen. It's 3 seconds can be maddening because looks like you're allllllllllmost there and then...no, no you're not.
If anyone knows if there's an exploit there, in all ears. I'm going to restart that password experiment with the second account now.
And I know most "plz help me get past me locked screen" posts are sus and address likely people trying to either scam someone by stealing their info or trying to spy on their significant other. So if anybody has any questions I'll gladly verify that I do own all of the accounts, that they're on this locked device, but due to the time that has passed they don't show up in the device lists in the accounts (not even in the web version of the Play store), and due to password changes wile it was broken, it won't sink now and allow me to reset the lock through "where's my device."
Hi All,
I have a tablet Tab A model SM-T515 LTE. It has the latest update but it's so slow it's pain to use it. Any suggestions how to make it a bit more usable?
Greetings.
I have a US SM-T515 with a similar issue. I actually logged in to seek a bare-bones ROM. I was able to improve it a lot, however. I started with standard troubleshooting, disabling all visual and system enhancements in the setings, but that made litle change.
Next, I accessed the "Google" tab in settings. I began to disable everything.
When I got to customizion services, i went down the list, disabling each item.
I got to Chrome and disabled that. The screen froze for a moment, and the window closed. Suddenly, there was a marked improvement in performance.
Next, I changed my default browser from Chrome to Firefox, just to be certain that using the browser might not re-enable this somehow, someday, like after an update.
The only issue I found is that now, when I try to access that Google tab in settings, the window flashes open, and closes. I believe something may be corrupt, and removing all Google applications, then re-installing them might fix that, but for now, everything that I want to work, works fine, so I am not touching it.
Good luck, and best wishes!
A sure fire way to speed everything is to degoogle with microg. I haven't tried it on my T510, but the rom I use here still seems peppy. Another thing to try is use a script to reorganize all the sql lite databases. Last resort before degoogle is to backup all your data with the help of Neo Backup and factory reset your device. Then restore the app backups, leaving out anything you can do without.
