How I fixed persistent Force Closes on Fire - Kindle Fire General

This may seem dumb to people who know a lot more about development than I do, but I had an issue that I was having a hard time with and came up with a solution that worked. So, I wanted to share it in case anyone else has the problem.
Background: My phone was rooted. I had side loaded some apps including my favorite keyboard that I use on my Galaxy S called TouchPal. There is a whole thread on installing alternative keyboards in the development section.
After I side loaded TouchPal and followed the instructions in the alternative keyboard thread, I was getting consistent FCs and system dumps. My KF wouldn't let me do anything for more than a few seconds without FC and system dump. The system dump is what was really killing me. I couldn't access anything because the device kept going back to the dump after every FC.
I went to different threads and was trying to do some things like unbrick or uninstall the app through adb. But I am too dumb to follow the instructions precisely so in desperation I wondered if I could do anything in those few precious seconds I had when the device was not experiencing a FC.
Now, during this process below I was constantly having to continue after a Force Close until I could do it fast enough that the device didn't have time to FC before I had completed the process. It's seems very simple, but it did work and you have to be quick:
1. Hit the quick menu
2. Hit "More"
3. Hit "Device"
4. Hit "Reset to Factory Defaults"
After I did this, the device started to go back to a default state even though I was continuing to get FC as the device was doing this.
Eventually it was able to complete and the device rebooted. After it was done booting, I was still getting FC from the TouchPad keyboard, but I wasn't getting the system dumps, which is what really prevented me from doing anything. Finally, I was able to get to my applications and "Force Stop" the TouchPal keyboard. Then I was able to remove it.
My situation may be unique, but I hope it helps someone.

[Q] force close on Acer apps ?

I have a problem with the Acer "apps" on my a500.
when I launch the eReading, Games, Social and Multimedia shortcuts I get a force close on the process "ApinAp (process android com.acer.app)" I have tried to clear data in "ApinAp" but it did not help... it worked when I bought my A500 a week ago.
but I don't know when it stopped working.
if anyone have a solution or a good idea to try please don't hesitate to answer ;-)
Reset it. There's probably a bad app having it's way with your tablet and causing the instability. If it continues to happen on stock, send it back.
Start installing your apps back one by one with time in between to test. Eventually you'll be able to track down the one app you shouldn't be using.
I have the same problem. After rooting, I restored *a lot* of the backups from my 2.2 phone. I uninstalled some because they didn't play nice with honeycomb, but I still haven't been able to find the culprit. Also, restoring the backup from their original, pristine condition did not help. I would really appreciate it if anyone knows which app(s) is/are responsible for this.

Ideally, you should post all the apps you've installed so anyone coming across this thread can scan what you have and have the chance to see an app that is knowingly bad.
You should always restore to a factory state to make sure it *is* a bad app though. That's the only way to verify if it's Honeycomb or a tablet hardware issue as being the cause rather than a rogue application.
Also, don't install *questionable* apps from *shady* sources. Eventually, this kind of thing will happen.
Well, I have installed lots of free apps, so it would take a while to post them all here. I have removed a few but it didn't help. It could be anything, of course, but I suspect it must be one that has root access. When I tried freezing a few likely culprits, it didn't change anything though.
Do you by any chance use morelocale 2?
I had some force closes and it was because my tablet was using a language that it didn't like (together with my Contacts) so I had to change some settings (use different locale or delete any custom characters from my contact list) and it worked.
I have the same problem. I restored apps from the android market because I couldn't figure out how to make market enabler work in the beginning. Ever since all the native apps are force-closing.

I have removed morelocale2 and the problem persists. However, Even after removing it, the added localisations seem to persist (for example, market is still translated to greek). Does anybody know of a method to completely remove its effects?
Removing locale won't disable it's effects. You can set it and them remove it and the settings will remain as you've set it.
You should reinstall it and then set it back to default settings and see if that helps you problem. My problem was an unsupported language that I've set in it and that caused crashes.
I redownloaded it and reset the settings to English (US). When I did that, the apinap force close message reappeared, so there must be some connection. Then, to make sure, I rebooted and tried the apps. Even though the new/old localisation was working as expected, the acer apps still force close, giving the same error as before.
Odd. Did you enter the info (in morelocale) manually or did you use the two selection buttons and pick the language from there?
I just picked it from the selection list.
Then it's not the same as my problem. But I still suspect that it has something to do with locale.
Do you have any custom characters under your contacts. Because that can cause problems (I've stumbled upon it when I was looking if anyone is experiencing the same crashes as I was).
If you do have them (any greek lethers and such) then try disabling google sync and wiping contacts and see if that helps. If it does than it's your contacts (some people reported that some unsupported characters and multiple notes could cause crashes on tablets).
If it still crashes then just enable sync again and restore the contacts.
I don't know what else you could do if you still experience crashes after that except a hard reset to check if that helps.
Thanks mate, I tried this too. In fact, I also removed everything with any Greek character at all. No luck at all, so I will give it a rest. I will just keep the apps in case they are needed for the 3.1 update.
I never used titanium backup, but if anyone is restoring a full backup set from this application and any honeycomb only settings gets deleted or written over by 2.2 information, you will probably have a crash..
just like flash 10.3 has 2 different libraries loaded, one for 2.2 and one for 3.0 , but only installed one of them, your device with flash will FC, when flash suddenly uses 2.2 libraries.. so not all backups and apps can be easily restored..
you will need to test the apps backed up, and avoid restoring any system settings.

[WARNING] NookColor Tools can cause forced factory reset

I couldn't see anything about this on the forum so far so I thought I ought to post a warning myself....
NookColor Tools is a great app, but don't be tempted to experiment with the menu entries further down the "All Settings" menu, as some of them (for example the multiple "Settings" entries) will force your NST/N2G to factory reset. Basically a B&N dialog appears and says something about a security or permissions breach detected, then forces a reboot and factory reset.
You have been warned!
The following [useful] menu entries are known to be safe:
About Your NOOK
Battery use
Development
Device Info
Diagnostics and Logging
Locale
Manage applications
Quick settings
Running services
Screen
SD Card
(Tested using N2G running 1.2.0 firmware, rooted using GlowNooter 1-12-25)
I can confirm this - just happened to me.
And me

Yup! This happened to me too last week when I first rooted my Nook. I wish I had seen this earlier. It would have saved me from having to root again.
This has happen to me too yesterday. +1
I have made CWM backup just one day before it, but I should mention that it doesn't backup My Files folder from internal storage partition actually, because the 'media' partition just wasn't mount by CWM at all (at least it worked that way in my particular case). So be careful and backup your books and etc from internal storage partition manually if you need them.
I would recommend to have whole ROM (internal storage flash memory) backup to everybody (nookmanager or nogie will help to do it if you don't know how to use dd in adb shell). It obviously rules. I'm glad I had it.
Why isn't this thread stickied? This seems like Need to Know Information.
Oh crap. Does this mean that secret Barnes & Noble stuff is breached? Or does it just mean that the system finds out that it is rooted? Either way, that isn't good. This did get me thinking, if those settings exist, are they included, but blocked by the stock ROM? We already know about the secret factory menu, so is it possible that there are more menus like that? Possibly some that allow acces to that part of settings without causing a security breach?

More likely the settings entry is doing exactly what it is supposed to, and the way it's triggered stock just happens to show it as an entry. I just did this myself on accident, I think I'll leave it in reader only mode for a while, I rarely use the "tablet mode" features.
==EDIT== I do miss the screensaver banner editing (had it as an "if found, contact" notice) and the persistent battery bar I had though. I guess it's less likely to die quickly in reader only mode so the bar isn't really needed any more
I can confirm this. A few NookColor Tools settings don't work (they throw me back to main NCT menu), and at least one of them shown me the security breach message and then restarted my Nook Simple Touch.
After restart, Nook started to boot, but never finished doing that. Eventually i pushed at the top part of the screen - and that brought up the Quick Settings dialog (where you can enable/disable WIFI). After that, the top Android bar appeared, but the screen remained black.
My guess is that since i disabled B&N tools with NookManager, Nook had no home to run, or something like that.
Eventually i had to restore pre-rooting backup i've had.

+1 for making this thread Sticky!!
Just reporting:
Device Registrator can force factory-reset as well. If you register with it and then tap "unregister user."
I was running rooted 1.0.1 rooted with nookmanager.
Mineturtle33,
I'm thinking it's interesting, because the "security breach" problem may be related or the same of you first try to port CM7.
You agree?
Maybe better understanding of that can also solve some of the problems of the port!
Yes, and no. When it recently factory reset on me it was related. When I first tried to port SnowMod (not CM7 btw, but a NST optimized CM7-like ROM) It factory reset when I tried to open an app in the android launcher. This may or may not be related.

This is an old thread but I found this error myself much to my chagrin. I decided to test every selection. Every menu is okay to go through except the second settings down on the list and the registration menu. Some of them cause weird behavior (one of the timezone selections killed button savior after opening the registration menu) but are harmless from what I can tell. I wish there was some way to remove the second "settings" selection since it is on the bottom of the first page and someone could accidentally click on it instead of going to the next page. I tried backing up, letting it reset itself. and restoring, but it seems to be a flag that is on the system. Perhaps there is a way to turn it off but that is beyond me.
Agree

This happened to me too! I was looking for a way to change the time, as the UK has just changed to DST, and hit upon a "settings" that caused a bricking! I agree that this should be a "sticky" warning for noobs (such as me) to read first

[Q] I need some help

I rooted my GS5 recently and nothing went wrong but when I uninstalled a root app the short-cuts on my keyboard disappeared. By that I mean that my keys on my keyboard normally had short-cuts on them that could be activated by holding the key for 1 second but ever since I uninstalled the root app they disappeared and now I have to go to the other tab on the keyboard to use my short-cuts. Its not a huge deal but its something I got used to and now that its gone it feels weird not having the option. Btw the app I deleted was the one I had to install to get Xblast Tools and Wanam but I cant remember the name of the app. Any help would be appreciated
Restore your backup to fix everything with two or three clicks.
If you aren't making backups, now you know why you should start doing so. Root is very useful but also gives you the power to cause greater damage. You should for instance never delete an app, just rename it so that you can revert changes if you need to.
I have no idea what app you are alluding to. Perhaps someone else will recognize it. Or you could break down and do a search. No doubt if you try a handful of different keywords you would quickly identify the app that you want. It's a good habit to always search before posting a question anyway. Often it gives you an immediate answer. And at the least enables you to pose better informed questions.

Carmode problem- need help please!!

STABILITY ISSUES & CAR MODE FAULT --HELP PLEASE!!
Guys I need some help please.
The phone is great but over the past 2 months I have noticed occasional stability issues like programs suddenly opening up when you turn on screen that haven't been selected etc.etc
There is a list of 9 common faults published including some where, for eg OK google was working fine but suddenly doesnt etc.
This week in CAR MODE I noticed this unexpected error that restarting, clearing app cache, clearing app data etc will NOT fix.
Everything was working OK and I changed nothing that could have caused this.
when selecting Nav from carmode home screen it asks you "where do u want to go?", as per normal.
When I open the search text box to enter the address where I want to go, instead of verbally telling it, it accepts text characters for about 3-4 sec then suddenly just goes straight back to the carmode home screen before you finish typing the info and then hitting search!! Every time.
This is extremely annoying as it is the only accurate way to give it an address as it often miss hears the verbal names.
I cannot find anywhere a way of downloading and reinstalling carmode version 1.2.44.16607 so it can reload whatever blasted line of code is suddenly corrupted and causing the problem. if it was a separate app I could just uninstall and reinstall it but it is part of the OS and even in Galaxy apps I cannot find the specific Samsung app.
I DO NOT want to do a factory reset and wipe my phone!!, that is a BS solution just as it is on a PC for trying to fix a minor windows error.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE???

lots of phone issues

I am getting lots of problems with my phone. I recently bumped by Nexus 6p to the beta releases, and noticed apps and the OS/phone as a whole, crashing and restarting. This happens randomly sometimes. I will have Maps open, and Maps closes, and asks me if I want to re-launch it. I do, and within minutes sometimes it force closes again. And when I go to view other apps I have open while I have maps open, and switch to it, or begin to use another app, I also run into issues (apps/phone crashing). I also get, upon reboot sometimes, an error message saying my phone is corrupt. I also will be running a app like Maps, and I once got about 10-12 pop-ups telling me that these apps needed to force close, and asked even if I wanted to restart, even though I don't recall launching some of them (must have been running in the background).
Would a factory reset work, or should I go back to the stable rom, or should I root, or do I need to rma this? I am trying to switch to another rom, and looking at unlocking my phone, but can't copy my files to my desktop (Windows 10): "Calculating the time required to copy the files". It stays at this for a while. Then it begins to copy, and after a short while, I get a pop-up saying "Error Copying Files or Folder" "Unspecified error". Any ideas on where to go from here?

You're running beta so problems can be expected. Go back to the stable Marshmallow builds. You should just be able to unenrol from the Android N Beta Program to do this and get back to MM.

I noticed that if I do roll back, I will loose all of my data. Would you know what is going wrong when I try to get the files off of my phone when copying them?

It's too hard to say. I remember trying to get Windows to play nicely with my Nexus but it wouldn't, I didn't spend very much time trying to get it going though because I very rarely use Windows anyway (Linux user here). Sorry I can't really be of any help with this, hopefully someone else can chime in.
