I just dropped 40 AUD on a white GSM Nexus S! Who knew it took moving across the world to find a reasonably priced non-sprint Nexus S. I own an iPhone 5S at the moment but I will most definitely be using this new Nexus S as my daily driver once it get's here and I flash CM9.1 on it.
Just thought I'd drop in and ask:
Who's still here?
What rom are you running in 2019? (drawer/unused Nexus S' welcome!)
Is there still any interest in Lineage OS 13 or 11? (with /media as /userdata thx @dmitrygr for bringing so many awesome new things in your M for Crespo works)
I'm very excited! I've always wanted a Nexus S, but held off and ended up buying a Galaxy Nexus in 2011.
Hi, i was using my Nexus S until a couple of days. The rom i was using is SlimKat : https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-s/development/rom-slimkat-t2555873
I'm still here, and running Gingerbread 2.3
Cyanogen Mod 7.
This is a great little 'toy' for my toddler.
I founds MX player that seems to be able to handle some of the videos I put into the 16GB of space. VLC Player couldn't play back
Load it up with some baba-black sheep and other kiddie MP3s.
Still looking for more APK's that I can side load. I did find Opera Mini as well, but this unit is in Airplane Mode 100% of the time, and I haven't connected WIFI.
I need:
A good image gallery
Another MP3 Player
Other Launcher apps
I'll tell you what, the AMOLED on this phone is great, and really makes the display, though low resolution, really pop.
I wish my HTC M8 had OLED...
@Galaxyninja66 And a bit late to the party, but considering it's 2020, why not.. I just found my old stock Nexus S (aus model too)... have popped TWRP on it and found a SlimKat 4.4.2 rom to install.. all seemed to work well.. and fast! Now to figure out what else I can play with on this device.
How I miss voodoo sound on this device. Too bad I hard bricked mine 7 years ago.
Nexus S was my first Android phone. I had it from January 2011 to about September of 2016. I used it till it died. I used Cyanogen Mod on it after official updates stopped.
I use this device occasionally, its great to use as a music player, old game player, and alarm clock. I also downgraded mine from the latest 4.1.2 all the way down to 2.3.7. Too bad it's a Sprint model...

I would wait for Samsung's next generation of tablets to hit with the quadcore Exynos SOC that should outperform the Tegra 3 and at least lower the prices of current models some. Either that or buy an iPad 3rd gen.. I'll catch hell for that, but it is a great tablet! Good luck with your decision!
There haven't been any leaked ICS builds yet and the CM build's don't have the camera working.
My 10.1 with 3.2 runs netflix and with bubble pnp and MX video will play all my media on my nas which the ipad won't do.
If you want to use it as a media device it works great as it is. The ICS release for the i9100 has left me convinced that Samsung will throw some ass UI on ICS and it might be a bit snappier (debatable) but my Tab works great now for what it is.
I am using the KANG ROM for ICS. Works well. No camera functionality yet because Samsung has not released the kernel yet. I never use it however, actually have a Canon for that!
KANG WIFI 10.1 ICS P7510
However, as previous poster said, you are in a unique position. I would definitely wait for the next gen tablet. Or if you like a device locked down but nice, get the new ipad. nothing worse than getting a new gizmo, and a new version is released at the store in a couple months!
If money is not an issue, snag a tablet now, maybe the ASUS prime (tegra 3) or the 10.1 at best buy, get the buyback option, and trade it in later when a new one comes out.
If you can wait a couple more months then I would say go with a newer gen tablet that will be coming out. If you cant and you want this one, I would say try to get it second hand off somebody as I think you will be more happy with it.
The lack of updates from samsung sucks. I have a skyrocket and still no working ICS from samsung. I am an active DEV for the skyrocket..
Its just sad that we dont get the latest updates from samsung/google.
Its worth buying and trying out some of these roms. The price of this tab has come down.

I have the Note and I can't wait until ICS!
I just bought it because the $400 price point just hit me right. I like it so far but have not hacked it yet. If you want anything newer it's going to cost more and I doubt there is going to be another price drop anytime in the near future.
XDA is no longer worth my time.
I love mine and I love all the roms that you can try on them.
I got mine off craiglist a month ago that came with a case, carry pouch, sd card adapter, 3 anti gloss screen protector, 16 gig mircro sd, all original wires and its in perfect condition for $350
It the 32 gig model btw
Got it rooted right away and installed the p4wifi build 26
Its been a month and I still haven't gotten any problems
Absolutely love it as I use it to stream movies, shows, sports all type of media and ipad can't do any of that.
I also use it for work
If you can find it for about $300 its still a great deal considering you'll save $100+ compared to buying retail + tax
I played with the new ipad yesterday and all I can say is it got a very gorgeous screen and it's very smooth but it still can't do certain things I need my tablets to do and it's very pricey
I would suggest you wait till a newer one comes out. Samsung is really pathetic when it comes to updates. I have had the 10.1 3G since it was released. I have tried the ICS roms from Mabalito & Pershoot since months. They are pretty good but battery life reallllly sucks & WIFI connectivity problems are far too many since the last few builds. I have also used the iPad 2 along with this and the user experience is just a little bit better. Somehow I am so frustrated with Samsung for not ironing out these little nags with the tablet. They have made a mess of this gorgeous piece of hardware with some very ordinary and laggy touchwiz based software.

Have you tried alternative launchers? Personally I rate ADW and GoLauncher way above TouchWiz (each to their own though). Admittedly I'm smitten with ICS AOSP now as I have that on my phone and my soon-to-be-replaced 7" tab, but I found the GB experience tripled as soon as I stopped using TW.
its pretty funny the lack of love samsung gives everyone in terms of updates for just about every device they make!
no device is perfect
I just pulled the trigger on a refurbed 10.1 on woot.
Hoping it'll be a good replacement for my old Viewsonic G Tablet.
The Galaxy 10.1 is a good choice for a useable TAB,
there are many good custom roms available, HC and ICS.
(yes, no camera yet at all ICS, only on HC)
You can mount windows shares with cifsmanager app,
and watch all videos with bsplayer app direct per directory,
or have access to all your files on the shares.
Realtime TV from a Dreambox with DreamDroid app,
all SD channels of the Box on the TAB.
(HD sucks because wifi only 65Mbps)
With Remote RDP Lite app you have a real RDP Client to use a windows remote session on the TAB.
Musik per DLNA upnp app from the mediaserver to the amplifier, and watch the files and cover on the TAB.
(i do it all so...it make's me happy)
All the suggested apps are free of cost...
some game is not running in ICS on my galaxy tab 10.1
I love my Tab 10.1, however, its inability to handle full 1080p HD videos is really frustrating. For instance my Galaxy S2 generates full 1080p videos using its default settings, but these videos can't be played on my Tab until I convert them to 720p using Handbrake. This a really annoying process. I should be able to play videos produced by my S2 using its default settings on my Tab without any extra steps.
My advice is, if you can wait a couple of months, get the next generation of Tab, which will hopefully have issues like this resolved.
Archer, ADW is really good! Thanks!
Both the ICS ROMs available as of today:
AOKP build 28 has that horrible MAC address issue.
Pershoots ROM (27th March) also has issues with WiFi & Personal Hotspot. Other than that it is pretty good.
Ofcourse one cannot blame these guys who are putting in so much hard work day in and day out for our devices.
It is really Sam'dump' that has to really get their slouchy asses off to releasing an ICS ROMm so Pershoot & Co. can take their builds forward with proper drivers. It seems all their attention is diverted to the Galaxy S2 currently. The Tab and Note both are riddled with an outdated OS. Its almost April 2012, Samsung seems to be sleeping. On the other hand ICS has been floating on rival companies tablets since months now!
I found someone willing to trade their Samsung Galaxy 2 7.7 for a PS Vita. I bought the Vita when it was released, but never touched it. I've been wanting a tablet because I need a large portable device to view documents and whatnot. As much as I'd like a Nexus 10 or a iPad 4th gen, I simply can't afford it.
How is the speed of this device and overall screen quality? Would it be considered a fair trade? I haven't been able to get anyone to consider trading the Vita for a 2nd gen iPad or a better Galaxy tablet. I'm just worried the CPU on this isn't so great.
It's a really great tablet. I have the tab 10.1, but the screen is crystal clear and bright enough to read in moderate sunlight. While the stock ROM is a tad laggy, just get CM10 and your speed worries are over.

Simply go for it its great device.and about cpu its dual core omap which not a old age processor.although now a days we got quad core on devices but dual core also gives good performance.
Screen is good with 1024x600 and tab gives full hd playback.
Books reading is average experience.
And it plays almost all hd games smoothly.so go for it.
Sweet that's reassuring. Although someone offered to trade the vita for a Galaxy tab 10.1. I believe it's the v version would that be a better choice?

I too am wondering if I should get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7 inch). Amazon has them on sale (currently out of stock, but still allowing orders) for $179. I have a $30 credit for pre-ordering Windows 8. I also have $56.58 in rewards points from my Amazon credit card. This brings the price down to $92.42.
My goal is to find a 7 inch tablet that I can use for gaming and occasional movie watching via Netflix and Hulu Plus. Yeah, the Nexus 7 would probably be superior, but I'd never be able to get the price down to this level.
Should I get one?
the SDcard slot in my Galaxy Player 4.0 is dieing (bump the player the wrong way and is says the SD card has been removed and then remounts it seconds later). Anyone here have one of those and can compare sound quality thru HEADPHONES, my primary use will be screen off music playback, so the 4,000MAH battery sounds real nice versus the 1200MAH battery in my SGP 4.0 but I need an idea of the sound quality of the tab 2 7" before I jump on this Amazon 180 dollar deal.

Well I ordered up one earlier today in the "bubble"between last night and now when Amazon had it listed as INSTOCK not the backorder message there now and last night, instead of sorting thru this page can you point me to the basics of Rooting, Stock Recovery Files, PIT files, best kernel/ROMS do I need to backup my EFS (was an issue on my SGP 4.0 when the guys that ported CM7 converted the file system from rfs to mtd and the script wiped the EFS folder)? Is there a Newbs start here thread? I want to be on a custom ROM before bed the day I get it, Also I've got a 64 GB microSD that was formatted and used in my 4.0, that should be plug and play at this point right?
I ordered one, too. I figure that nothing could come close to this for the $92.42 I'm paying. The Nexus 7 would be better, but not worth the additional money. And I just read that Samsung is starting to roll out the Jelly Bean update, too. Well, in France anyway.
I'll see what the stock ROM is like, but if I don't like it I'll switch to an AOKP ROM.
I'm also hoping that 8 GB (4.5 GB available) will be enough. If not, just another reason for a custom ROM...

Yeah, I cashed in my change bucket at the coinstar (loading it to an Amazon gift code, since they don't take a fee that way) and got the first 26 bucks that way, and there are several Jellybean ROMs on here already from what I've read so far.

i ended up getting a 7" galaxy tab 2 from sears.(they tell me 7-10 business days before i get it) paid $177.99 ~190 with tax..
i wanted the N7 32gb since i couldve got it for 220... but ive seen some scary things about burn in on the screen and i saw a few that have melted..
hopefully not long after i get my tab ill start cracking on some roms for the community(dont expect too much. im only a beginner with making roms)
Well my tab 2 7" I ordered on Thanksgiving arrived Today with standard Amazon shipping.
I have ordered the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 the other day. I am waiting for it to get here. But from what I read, and the videos I seen, it does seem to be a really great tablet for the price. I cant wait for mine to come in!. lol
Hi all!
I recently lost my Samsung Galaxy Tab2 (P3100), and as I am running short on funds I was considering Nexus7(2012).
I want to know is it worth it now? I live in India and 16gb WiFi version is available for INR9000 ($145).
I am not really a power user but i do play a lot of games, video chats, web browsing and i also use it as a video player when i travel.
Same spec Nexus7 FHD retails retails at about INR21000 ($340) I am confused which one i should choose. I would keep it for about 2 years before switching. And i do use custom roms so i am not really concerned about future support.
Thanks
waiting for a quick reply
I still have my N7 2012 and it works great as a media device. All of the additions to the 2013 model are nice, but not a must have, such as a rear camera and a 1080p screen vs an 800p screen.
Buy the one that makes you happiest, but personally I can't see enough of an improvement to get the newest one. The Tegra 3 GPU runs every game flawlessly, and the screen is still really nice for watching movies on.

That's it.
Sorry for not keeping up with the thread guys. I saved a little money and purchased a Nexus5 instead.
Amazing device i must say
Is this still a good tablet to pick up? I'm wanting a tablet or a smartwatch, and I like the Nexus 9, but the 7 inch screen and great price are still pretty good. Even if it is discontinued, I still like it, and I would buy it new off eBay or Amazon. I know it has Lollipop too which is a plus and it's a developer Nexus device, so long after Lollipop it will have custom ROMs. Also I've also wanted a Nexus 7, but chose to buy a Nexus 5 over it. I love my Nexus 5, and plan on keeping it at least another year. The battery only concerns me about my phone, 3 hours SOT usually but I think the N7 has better battery? I'll be mostly gaming, reading, and videos on my tablet. A media device.
Do you still think it's worth picking one up?

I would Look at the N-Vidia Tablet. Much better for gaming and not Super Expensive.. or The nexus 7 2013 version. But with that said I still use my nexus 7 . I keep it on my purse for using for email GPS and Google plus while out and about. I wish it had a rear camera thou. I use it at home for xbmc remote. Ohh and i use it at home and away to view my home security cameras while traveling. For my Real work I use my Note 10.1 (2012 version).
Nobody can decide other then you. I Can tell you its either a bit slow on android 5. or there is bugs still in the os..
It's still a great device and I don't see any reason to buy a new tablet. But if I had to, I would probably pick something with more RAM since the N7 feels a bit laggy when I open large PDFs or many apps at once. And more memory would be nice, too. (I have the 16gb version)
EDIT: It's much faster with F2FS now.
If you're interested, I would be willing to sell my Nexus 7 (2012) 32 GB WiFi for $80 + shipping (US only). I bought it brand new in Dec. 2012, and have only used it at home, so it's in very good condition. I even have the original box it came in (plus the cable and charger).
I'm currently running KitKat 4.4.4, but I can upgrade it to Android 5 Lollipop before sending it out if you like.

I have two note 8.0 tablets that i got for my parents years ago that just won't ever die.
i got my dad an upgrade to tab s2 a while back but he continues to use the note 8.0 extensively brings it everywhere, while keeping the s2 only at home and using it lightly.
my mom also uses her note 8.0 extensively watching youtube and all sorts all day.
I now want to get my mom an ipad but with the tablet working so darn flawlessly still with great battery life...i just dont know if i even should bother.
why do these tablets never die??????
my mom also uses an even older samsung laptop thats just not dying. whats happening with these samsung devices??????? will they ever die?????
Yep!!!???
Here also an Note 8.0 workung really fine. It's really bad that there is no Android update...
Heck ya.
I still much prefer the 8" size and having an S-Pen. I use it mostly for reading and recently used it for movies on a long flight
Still using mine! Want to update it and am looking for its "hotspot" ability which I think it has. Wish it'd quit chewing up power while in standby mode.
I've been using mine as a streaming device in the car for the kids and a repository for ripped DVDs, but I'd really like to update it to a more recent version of Android. Twice before over the years I've investigated rooted and trying to change over to something more modern, but I keep running into a stumbling block at some point and returning to one of the stock Kit Kat 4.4.2 ROMs. I've rooted and ROMed plenty of other devices (a Galaxy S4 i337 with safestrap, both 2013 Nexus 7s, an LG G Pad v410 tablet, an LG G20, my Nexus 6x, and others but my n5120 won't ever let me flash TWRP, cyanogenmod, or even Philz recovery and everything pretty much halts there. Seems quite a waste for a really solid 8 inch tablet with 2 gb RAM...
I'm still using this tab from last 5yrs. Mainly using it for Books reading and taking notes on pdf files. I watch movies on the tab and play games too.
Yes, i'am still using and is totally functional, but somebody have a link for update ROM, I can't install apps like google keep and onedrive, etc, android 4.4.2 is too old.
Yes, i Buy this last week because I need 8" with internal pen and this is the only.

my screen got shattered ... I replaced it.. using it for youtube but some videos do stutter... I plan to flash a newer custom rom... any suggestion?
I've been using mine for home automation. Action Tiles. Display has been flickering and it won't keep a charge. I ordered a new battery. Hope that will keep it going for a while longer.
I just installed resurrection rom https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...t/rom-resurrection-remix-5-8-2-rel-1-t3571116 but it seems sluggish... I am disapoointed
Using mine as a church bible and notes
Found my wives old tab in a drawer. At first i thought it was garbage because it was so slow but I installed Civz flexburst rom and now the thing runs great. Fast, responsive, battery life is excellent. Its become a time waster game tablet/recipe book/kid car entertainment system.
Battery died after 2 months of not being used. But ordered gukeedianzi battery with 4800mah capacity from aliexpress. Going to test if it really holds better than original. Still waiting for battery to arrive...
Changed the battery as it failed to charge but think it ware software related as changing to rr 585 with Android 7 fixed it. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...t/rom-resurrection-remix-5-8-2-rel-1-t3571116
Just got a seemingly-dead Note 8.0 from a friend. Won't take a charge, but I haven't determined if the USB port or the battery is the culprit. Should have a replacement USB port in 2-3 weeks ($5.xx shipped, so I'll take the gamble). If that doesn't fix it, I'll try a new battery. Just want to get it running to play with hackability. Looking forward to seeing what this old beast will do, so I hope I get it working.
Who wants to test a Los 16 version for N5110 PM me on telegram. @ComicoX
I bought a Canadian version (SGH-467M) over a U.S. one (SGH-467) because the Canadian one has an unlocked boot loader so that I can flash a newer ROM. It turns out that all the newer ROMs are made for the N5100, 5110, 5120 versions even though they are all called Note 8.0! Since the Canadian one is a simplified version of 5120 (for example, it doesn't have proximity sensor, etc.), a 5120 ROM would not be fully functional on this tablet (Bluetooth is broken, etc.)
I was very disappointed at first until I decided to accept it the way it is. I have been very happy with it for the past few years!
8" is perfect when I am taking notes with it using One Note. A 10" one would be too heavy to hold with just one hand after a while.
I also use it to watch video, streaming or MP4 files. It also serves as a good Kindle reader.
Yes, I am stuck with an ancient 4.4.2 OS. However, since it does everything I need, is an upgrade necessary? After all there are *NOT* that many 8" tablets in the market that also have a built-in stylus. A built-in one is nice, or I would simply lose it! I will continue to use this tablet until it dies!

Then I will try to make my Los 16 version for that one
