Hello, I received my Pixel 2XL yesterday and I find that when it is updated, the internal memory is erased and since there is no external memory, I have to re-record everything that I had previously recorded.
My question is if "is there any application that allows partitioning the internal memory creating a pseudo SD External"? or in case through ADB commands ?.
;thank you very much.
And already step do not know if it is normal or I do not, I insert a memory pen and it does not recognize me and in the TWRP either, only the internal one and I'm not sure but it seems to me that with version 8 that did not happen, instead when updating to the last one of PIE if it occurs.

How are you updating? You should be able to update without wiping data using the ota or factory image with the flash all batch file edited.

Use your pc notepad or whatever you use on your pc, then right click the flash-all.bat file and select edit. Then remove the -w characters, and leave a single space between the remaining words. Then just save your edit

Hi Guys
I noticed another thread here on how to use your external SD card for apps only me being a noob it was far too complicated. I managed to find this video tho and tried it on my device and it works perfectly. You need a rooted device with Busybox and Script Manager to do this and then you will need to download this script and use Script manager to run this script at startup which basically swaps the internal and SD memory around so your device thinks your SD card is SDcard0. Video explains everything quite nicely.
There are other options out there that work too such as an app called Directory Bind, but this is way easier and much more reliable. With directory bind i was having huge problems trying to access the SD card or internal memory when plugged into my PC. Hope this helps.

No. Just remove the script & reboot, or pull the SD Card & reboot.

Question. What size SD card are you guys using?
Can I add a 64gb SD card, on top of the 16gb internal?
so then I would have like 80 gigs total?

I used a 64 GB micro sd card. That became my internal storage (Sdcard0) while the original internal storage now shows up as (extSdcard) ( Which is approx 10GB ) so you can use it all but it will be 2 separate storage areas.
Just look at the OP's post, he has a pic of how your storage will be showing up.
I'm using FolderMount from Google Play to move specific folders to the SD card, seems to be working well.
The internal SD is probably much faster than the external, so I'd rather not do a full swap.

64gb SanDisk Ultra. Yes u can.
Sent from my GT-N5100 using xda app-developers app
Hi guys.
I haven't watched the video yet... I just want to ask a few questions (and state my case) first:
I've just bought a 64gb SanDisk Ultra... I would like to use it as my internal memory as is described here... I have no intention of ever taking it out of the device.
Now my concerns:
1) I've never rooted a device before. I can get my way around windows and build a pc... that's about it. So I'm very nervous about doing this.
2) In all likelyhood I'll be staying on stock, so I want to be able to receive updates in the future.
3) I've already installed some apps to the internal memory... what's going to happen to those after I do this swap?
So what do I need to know?
Who's going to hold my hand in this?

hey man, I was in the same boat as you, never rooted anything before. you can root the note 8 by using framaroot. Its really easy and you can Install from the Link below and once rooted you Wont be able to do updates but you will be able to unroot when you would like to do an OTA update. I had to use the Samsung desktop application (Kies) for windows to apply the original firmware to do the updates. Not sure if you will need Factory reset but i did and I was able to update again. This is a software root and if anything goes wrong a factory reset will fix anything, that or just restoring your firmware, this also shouldn t void your warranty
the apps you have installed already will still work you just need to copy all the data on the internal across to your 64GB card (select all, copy and paste)
1 Install framaroot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1952450&d=1368232060
2. Open frama root and select SupesSu. Select the Aragorn method.
3. Reboot your device
4. Install busy box and open the app. Grant Su permissions and do the smart install
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
5. Now you are rooted and ready to follow the steps of this thread.
6. Use ur device to format the SD card
7. Download script and save to SD card

Had the script running for a while prior to a reboot last night....now smanager shows " sh: /storage/sdcard0/Download/app2sdNote2.bin: can't execute: Permission denied"...Don't know what happened??Tried deleting and reinstalling with no luck?? tried saving the download to the sdcard and the internal memory..neither worked??
This is great info and all but what happens if the sd card gets corrupt. Its a very real possibility as I have seen on AC it happens quite frequently. If the sd gets corrupted and that is where your android os file are now stored does your phone/tablet become a brick?

I wrote the hard to understand version of what's very much this process.
The gui is helpful, but you do need to know what the script is doing and what the script is to troubleshoot problems. It's not actually swapping all of your Android system onto the sdcard, to start with.
Your OS stays internal, and installer files for most of your apps stay on the internal memory. Applications write their data to the sdcard.
Gotchas with this approach include:
-your script needs to be executable by the process which runs it. When I first set this up there were issues around who owned the script and who could run it. If that's broken, you'll get the 'this script could not run' error.
- if you use one of the alternate roms, you will need a different script. Civato's kernel, for example, requires a different version of this script.
- I have heard rumors that 4.2 and above break this approach. Unknown by me.

This is the only part of the script in red when I view the log inSuperSU:
stdout redirected to /dev/null
Don't know if that clears things up a little?
you might try enabling adb and running the script from an adb prompt;
adb shell
cd /etc/init.d
find the script (probably called XYmount where X and Y are numbers) and
type
sh XYmount
That should give you fuller output of the error.

Since this is not a full swap to the sd card I think I am just going to leave it alone....don't want to mess around and risk bricking the unit. If I do decide to try the adb route I will let you know what I find. THANKS!

Thank you for the step by step instructions . I do have a couple questions before I dig into this method.
1 - You mean to copy all the internal sd card to the external one?
2 - the script was written for a Galaxy note II, would it work for the Galaxy Note 8?
3 - When you mention to download and save the script do SD card, do you mean the internal one?
4 - Did you write this script?
Thanks for your help. The lack of internal memory is my biggest issue with the note 8.
Yours,
Alex
The first thing I did after rooting, because it is what the tutorials and this forum always stress, is to make a Nandroid backup, which I did through TWRP Recovery. Nowhere did I see an option regarding where to save it. Low and behold, I find out that it saved the backup files, which are nearly 3gb in size, to the phone, instead of my larger SD card. Obviously I want to move it to the latter. But by what means should I do that, particularly so that the backup can be easily flashed onto the device later if need be? I don't want to move it only to make the files undiscoverable in Recovery.
(I apologize if this is a stupid question, but this is my first time rooting, and nothing useful was yielded from a forum search.)

In order for CWM or TWRP to see the files on your memory card it has to be 32GB (those are usually formatted in FAT32). If you have a 64GB memory card that would be formatted in extFAT. The programs cant read extFAT so you would need to take the card out place it in your PC and use a FAT32 program to make it FAT32.

It shows the 32GB for space with the usage of your memory card right? If so you will need to remove the MicroSD card and place it in your PC and format it to Fat32. You can also try the Format tool built in to the phone in you options.

Did the card read FAT32 on your computer? IF it did it shouldn't change when you put it in the phone unless your running some type of custom software and it's messing with the file system.

It never specified. There is no media format listed like for the computer's internal HD, and when I click to format, it tells me nothing, nor gives me no options. It just tells me that it is done.
So I have solved the problem. Below is a reference for other users who might have the same issue:
1) Used GoodManager for Reboot Recovery
2) Made a new Nandroid backup, this time discovering that I could assign the backup to my sd card. And so I did exactly that.
3) Rebooted after backup made.
4) Connect phone to computer via USB, and use Windows Explorer to drag and drop the backup that was sitting on the phone in the same area where the new backup is.
Basically, knowing that I could back up to the SD card, and that TWRP created a file path for exactly that, I knew that I could move the old backup there too.
That said, I very much appreciate the help given to me.

Just noticed you are on Verizon - I installed on my Sprint device, but it looks like it is available for Verizon S4 as well (I went to http://teamw.in/project/twrp2, and clicked "Get TWRP for your device", entered S4 as search criteria and found "TWRP for Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon) [jfltevzw]" as the last entry in the list.
Personally, I'd recommend downloading goomanager from the play store, and using that to install.

Dude. Don't rage.
Formatting data=deleting it permanently
You can't recovery formatted data. It's gone.
Next time, remember to do a backup.
If you google "recover formatted pics nexus 4" and have a read of the results then you will find progs for your pc/mac and apps for the phone that say you can recover your files from both internal sd(os side) and the sd card(data side).
You can use the trial versions to see what is recoverable but if you want the actual recovery then you will have to pay,its up to you.

I only have my work laptop also so can't adb anything. Do I just download ROM etc put on laptop, wipe all on phone, then transfer ROM, gapps etc back to phone then reboot to recovery and go from there? If someone could provide steps that would be greatly appreciated!

That will work, just make sure you don't wipe the /system until you have something to flash on your internal storage. I'm not 100% sure your phone will be recognized by your PC in recovery mode without adb debugging enabled.
Not sure it will solve your problem though. A fresh factory install would be your best bet when you can do that.

Thanks for that, so if not then by fresh install you mean flash the image from Google and go from there?
You don't need to wipe your SD. At least not everything. Just delete any folders that start with a "." and your "Android" folder and that should wipe any lingering settings.

Thanks for that, so if not then by fresh install you mean flash the image from Google and go from there?

yes, but I'd try what Morpheus says and see if that cures your problems.

OK my main issue at the moment is media server being a top battery drainer. I've searched high and low for a curropt file but can't find anything.

If you are gonna wipe your SD then you might as well wipe it all and flash a factory image and start over. Then slowly add stuff back and see where the problem is. Backup your entire SD card first though so you can just fetch whatever you need off it later. Some files to ignore when backing up though would be any hidden files (the ones with "." In front of them) and your Android folder. They contain nothing but garbage and often fail when copying anyways causing you to start the transfer all over again.

Ater I update to 6.0 and the external sd card is formated that means I will lose all the apps and games I have already moved to the ext car correct? Because there is still data on the internal storage of those apps and games will the apps and games automatically download again or will I have to download each one myself?
Yes, it will format your SD and put an encryption key on it. You won't be able to use the SD on any other machine except for the one that formatted it.

When you format a card, everything on the card turns into unicorns and rainbows!

So, in other words you do not know? Or you want to make fun of me because you are more knowledgeable in this area than me.

Formatting a memory card will delete everything on it. Backup the existing data and then copy it back on after the format process. But, you'll have to use the device to copy because the card will be encrypted.
I think the interesting question, which also I don't know an answer to, is this:

You have to do it manually. Android doesn't know which apps you want on the Ext-SD or the internal storage.
The safest way to do this would seem to be:
-uninstall all apps currently on SD
-reinstall after SD format
If you want to preserve any other type of existing data, back it up somewhere else, then re-copy back onto the SD.

There is no need to uninstall apps on SD.
There will be a persistent notification that asks if you want to forget the SD Card (that you had earlier formatted it as Internal i.e. Adopted Storage).
If you confirm, the encryption key will be deleted from the phone, and apps stored on MicroSD won't be readable by your phone or any other device.
The question: if automatic downloading of apps will occur has been answered above by Neo3D.
And when the external sd stop working, the system crash ?
