Sprint S8 no network after Pie update - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hoping to find some assistance on here since the Samsung forums aren't much help.
A few people out here who (from what I gather) have the SM-G950U are experiencing issues with mobile data after the Pie update.
Personally I will see spotty LTE connection. If i put the phone in CDMA only mode i can get relatively stable 3g.
Tried wiping cache, resetting APN, soft reset, hard reset...
Since its the locked down bootloader version there aren't many good rom options out there that I have been able to find.
There are similar discussions over on Reddit and the Samsung forum, but I don't have link privileges yet so you will need to google if you want to see them.
Any help would be appreciated

Yes, I had the same issue, I had to call Sprint using a different phone and they reset something over on their end and my phone went through some reconfiguration process and it worked after that. They were aware of the problem and had already notified Samsung of the issue. So just call Sprint (*2 from a Sprint phone) and you'll be back in business again.

i tried talking to sprint over the phone, they had me do some ## codes to re-register the device with the network. That helped nothing really. They then said i would have to take it in to a store with a support desk.
I spoke with Samsung and they offered for me to send the device in. I created a ticket and i can ship them the phone, and they will repair it and ship it back. But that will take almost 2 weeks. (2 business days shipping, 5-7 business days for the repair and another 2 business days to get it back)
So i will go to the sprint store today and then if that gets me nowhere I will think about sending it in to Samsung.

I had the same issue with my S8+. They ended up flashing the phone which wiped everything and my sd card was encrypted which they didnt decrypt. Anyways data and everything back.

my location doesnt update, weather, google maps, bing, etc

searched the forums with little info about my situation, other than that it seems to be happening to a handful of others.
havnt changed any settings or added apps or anything to my phone for several weeks if not months. i am using the cell evo v1 rom. 2.11.50.20 radio. i dont have a proxy server running.
for the last 2-3 days my location has only updated itself once. google maps cant find me, as well as bing. manual update does nothing. soft reset does nothing. wifi connect does nothing. i can get on the internet, sms, mms, etc etc.
i read on tmonews.com that tmobile was turning on HSPA+ in my region in the last couple days, along with 18 or so cities around the US, can this have something to do with my problem?
not sure what else to do...cant find any info.
thanks
I'm having this problem now as well. Been working on it for a couple days. T-Mo has had HSPDA+ here in St. Louis since before I got my HD2, so I don't think it's due to them adding it to your region.
Strange things I've noticed so far:
It works if Wifi is on, but not connected to a network.
It works if you are connected through EDGE, but not 3G or H.
The AGPS server IP address in the registry is a private network address: 10.something. If someone with a stock TMOUS rom can look in /HKLM/HTC/SUPD AGPS/ for the Server IP key and post the contents, I'd like to know if it's the same.
These issues are the same as everyone with different devices has been having for a while now, but the older phones with the issue seem to work in some areas without the wifi and edge workarounds, and not others. Mine so far works nowhere without the workarounds.
Try going into the manila slider and on the weather tab press menu > Enable my location
^ that isn't even an option for me on the manila slider anymore for some reason. I disabled the gsm and ran on edge and it was able to locate. as soon as turned gsm back on it wouldn't do it again.
bump, anyone?

Maybe you should move to Denver. Colorado is beautiful this time of year.
Kidding aside, how about trying a hard reset?
from what i've seen on threads somewhat related to this, hard reset is a 50/50 shot. if i'm going do a hard reset where i would have to redo all of my settings and such, i'm just going to wait until the new version of the cell evo rom comes out. which is supposed to be soon.
i really dont understand what would cause this to suddenly happen. especially since it still works on edge. i tried wifi once and it didnt work, but i think i had my network connection still on. but regardless, this is pretty rediculous.
If you've traveled anywhere, your radio may be 'stuck' on a distant tower. This has happened on a couple of our phones and the tmo folks had to do a push/release/unstick type of signal to the phone. May be worth a try.
^ok, i called tmo tech support. mentioned about the possibility of sending me a reset signal, she said that was a possible scenario, but she was pretty confident that it was because my sim card is an older model sim card. claims that the sim card in my phone wasnt designed for 3g services, and any sort of change in the network (like them adding HSPA+ like i mentioned above) could interfere with the connections. she said the fact that i could do this on edge and not 3g is a dead giveaway that the sim card is the problem.
she said they are in the process of trying to get people to go to the corporate stores and switch to the latest sims. apparently this is happening to a lot of people, but the sim should be the fix.
i guess i'll shoot up there later on after work, or tomorrow, and i will give you guys a follow up on this.

Actually that does make perfect sense, and I suspect you'll find it clears up your problem. In fact, for anybody else that finds this thread, I suggest you try that step before other alternatives like hard-reset or ROM flashing.
yep, new sim card did it guys. i would recommend anybody having any connection issues to see if your sim cards are up to date.
edit: it was working before. now its only updating on edge again. not sure what to think or do. going to wait and see what happens when the new rom I use comes out.
any other ideas on this guys? new sim card only worked for a few hours. back to only updating 'my location' on EDGE and WIFI. pretty damn annoying. thinking about calling tmo support again to see if they'd send me a 'reset signal', but with having the new sim card you'd think that it wouldnt be a factor anymore, because i'd imagine it's already been reset.
the only other thing i could think of, and thats what tmo would probably tell me to do, is a hard reset. i'm sure they wouldnt be too happy with having a flashed rom on there either (not that i would tell them anyways).
if nobody has any other ideas but a hard reset, i'm going to wait for a couple days until the new release of the cell evo rom.
thanks
Yea. That weird problem hit my second HD2. I bought one 2 weeks ago and after your post paid more attention and of course noticed my location being Denver....
I deleted all preset locations and added custom one. It updated only once, right after location was activated....
However, wife's phone HD2 which was purchased on 3-24-2010 or original release date does not have that issue, ROM was updated to 2.13 a month ago or so...
Here you go...
Two of the same phones (supposedly), with the same stock ROM, with the SIM cards acquired about 5 years ago. One shows weather update without problem, second (newer one) has that dreaded nag....
I had a similar issue where the weather would only update once then freeze and never update again. All other 15 location updated but not my location. This was normal for stock and 2 roms, then I used energy rom and it now works. huh? Go figure.
Strange...I'm in St. Louis, as well...MO, that is...and it is working fine for me.
Try downloading the HTC connection wizard. This has fixed connection issues I've had before. I know Tmo has 3 networks to choose from MMS, Data, and Internet. I beleive you want data and may be your phone is selecting Internet.

ya that didnt work. either. still does it on edge though. the cell evo rom update will hopefully be here soon, if that doesnt fix it, the i'm not sure what to do.
I also have the problem of weather for my current location not updating (and the location not updating either). I have had the phone for almost a month and it updated regularly, although I noticed an occasional lapse for an hour or two. Following the suggestion by misticninja, I switched the band to Edge and I was able to update the location and weather. When I switched back to auto (3G), the update failed. It occurred to me that when I am in my basement office at home, I get Edge, not 3G. That may be why I got updates there. But I am sure it has updated in the past at my work location where I have very good 3G. Is this an HTC problem or a T-Mobile problem?

I'm having this problem ever since Tmo announced HSPA+ (4G speeds), but my sim is only 2mo. old! Is that an old sim?
You need to have your location enabled. Go to settings tab the location and then click on enable my location.

the problem with me no wifi
no mobile data
That is so far from something you could call a "brick" it's not funny. "Brick" means un-recoverable. If you can "un-brick" something without diassembling it or at least using hardware a normal user couldn't have access to, it's not a brick!
Also, has anybody else actually had this problem? A few people seem to indicate that they have *not*...
No problems what-so-ever updating and running on my Odyssey...other than taking forever to download and install.
Working fine in my Lumia Icon from Verizon.
No cellular data after hard reset
I by no means have a brick, but I do now have an issue. Here’s what happened.
I have a Sprint ATIV S Neo, GDR3, Interop-unlock, the whole deal.
Installed the 8.1 update yesterday, and everything was working. I have been playing with all kinds of “stuff” in the registry and such, so I decided that since I had just installed 8.1 I would start fresh and do a hard reset. I don’t really care about keeping interop-unlock at this point. Even with it, so much is still locked down. I’m sure in the future someone will get this cracked and we can really have fun, but until then, just being developer unlocked is good enough.
So, when I got home I reset the phone (power+volume down, exclamation point, then the remaining sequence).
Phone boots back up, and I connect to my WiFi and set everything back up. I think life is wonderful at this point. Then decide to test my 4G download speed so I turn off wifi.
Oops, no cellular data, phone calls and text are fine (didn’t try mms, but probably doesn’t work, blank url in the provisioning). Tried all the usual tricks (##72786# and such). I have my msl, so I go into the provisioning, and things look messed up. My MDN and MSID are 000003872. That makes no sense, so I set them back to the correct values and still no go.
Called Sprint. They ran me through all the usual things that I had already done (hour on the phone with them).
Long story short: The activation program seems to be missing from my phone. Hands free activation never tries to start, in fact, after hard resetting again and watching closely, during setup it says “Activate your device can’t be opened”. And the network settings are missing from the settings menu.
So after work I’m going to take it to Sprint and hopefully they have a factory image they can flash (hopefully an older version so I can update things myself).
My thinking is that the 8.1 update is basically the new rom, but during install doesn't delete the existing carrier programs. When I hard reset, all that got re-installed was the strictly Microsoft stuff, not the carrier specific items i.e. hands free activation.
PS Sorry about the novel...

HTC confirmed this yesterday, they awared the problem and contacting with MS. Announcement by HTC China
The problem covered both HTC 8s(A620D) and 8x(C620d)
8X/8S have similar but more serious problem with gdr1 - gdr2 upgrade last year, even can't boot into SPL.
By the way, to normal users, if their phone turn into black screen and can't boot, it's a brick. No one will care about if it's a real brick, what they know is: I can't use my phone, it's not working, just like a brick.

No need to apologize for the novel! I did the SAME exact thing as you (except I hard resetted via settings > about > more info > reset your phone). Luckily I know my MSL, and have my MSID handy. I wiped my settings by doing ##72786# and selecting ok twice. I rebooted my phone manually and then went to the 'activate my device' app in settings. It did what looked like a profile update and it said my phone was successfully activated with my phone number listed.
I can browse the web on Sprint's network, make/receive calls and send/receive texts. The only thing I can't figure out to fix is MMS. I can't get or send picture mail, group texts or any kind of MMS at all.
I've managed to get my coworkers settings from his ATIV S Neo but I can't figure out how to edit them on my phone. Going into ##3282# doesn't let me edit things that deeply.
From what I've heard on other forums is that we're basically SOL unless Sprint releases their firmware updates and their release of 8.1 soon (which they have confirmed they will do this summer).
I figured from the get go when this started yesterday that this 8.1 release doesn't seem to properly support CDMA and judging by how many people have this issue, I was correct. Microsoft really needs to work better on the CDMA side of things.

I saw your reply to my thread for the same issue. I did some research on WP Central and found another thread where someone was having the same issue with an Ativ S and the solution was to manually enter the APN information. I don't know what the APN info is for Sprint, but when I checked it on my phone it was blank. It seems like a safe bet that updating that info would fix the issue.

Would you be willing to post the settings? I am guessing that the issue may be partially related to APN settings being missing under Settings, Cellular+SIM, SIM settings. I read a post by someone on another forum who had the same data issues but fixed them by entering the APN information for his carrier. I've tried a couple of different APN settings that I've found out on the web for Sprint, but I'm not sure they are accurate. All I know is that they were missing when I checked them on my phone.
i have fixed my issue with some internet research.
adding manually the APN of the provider in the APN settings solved the issue for me.
hope i helped.

I would not mind at all! I went into ##3282# on his phone, selected 'view' then 'others' then 'MMSC URL' . The two pictures are attached, the order of the settings begins with the picture that says '[email protected]'. The second pic is literally a continuation as it starts right where the first picture ends (I scrolled neatly!)
I've been trying to find the correct Sprint APN settings around the web, and a lot of sites have similar settings as options but either Windows Phone doesn't have enough fields for the settings, and the fact that in the APN settings on 8.1, it doesn't let me change the authentication type.
I noted on my coworker's ATIV S Neo that in his 'cellular+SIM' section, he doesn't have options to input APN like I do... the hard reset must've kicked the CDMA stuff in our phones to the curb.

Ahhhh, Vodafone... I assumed you were a Sprint brethren... I appreciate your post nonetheless! Thank you, sir. Now to continue the hunt for correct Sprint settings -_-
Just got back from two Sprint stores and a Best Buy with Samsung reps on hand. None of them had access to any means of reflashing to stock, and really had no useful information. I was surprised by how little they knew about any Windows phones.
I do have TEP though, and they ordered me a new phone. I should have it in a few days. Costing me nothing
Wish I had something useful to tell you folks...

I actually work for a Sprint store (non service/repair location) and I don't have TEP. I actually DO have an upgrade available since I bought the ATIV S Neo off-contract. I wouldn't mind using my upgrade on another ATIV S Neo... and whatever Windows Phones Sprint gets in the future, I'll have to buy off contract (which is nothing new to me lol).
I could technically add TEP to my line and wait a few days then do an advanced exchange at a local repair center but I'll most likely get a refurb as most of them are. I'd rather a brand new device
So I'm currently debating using my upgrade...

Did you mention the update to 8.1 or did you just play dumb? I am thinking I am going to have to do the same thing as you but I don't want to walk in there and tell them that I did the update and have them tell me I'm SOL.

I was completely honest, gave them the whole story from start to finish. Even pointed out some of the cool features of 8.1
If this was the new Galaxy they might have given me a hard time, who knows.

You didn't provide any detailed information about your phone model, firmware or even a step by step description of how you did a factory reset. So we have no way of discerning whether you missed any essential steps or narrow anything down.
Nevertheless you have an odd problem that no one else seems to be reporting. Ergo the most likely explanation is odd settings or corruption on your phone. As a factory reset (clearing user settings) apparently didn't work, the most plausible remaining cause would be a cache problem or some anomaly in your system files.
To that end, try wiping the cache from recovery mode. If that doesn't help, then use Odin to write a full stock firmware to your phone to replace the system files as well. If your problems persist then open a support ticket with your carrier to look into your account configuration. The latter is unlikely though if the SIM works in another phone. So in as much as we can tell given the paucity of details, you should try replacing your system files with Odin. Also check your APN information.

I'm on AT&T and having the exact same problem. I switched from Verizon as AT&T has a new tower in my rural area for better reception. I have 3 bars in my home and when talking on the phone it goes up to 4 bars. No problem calling out. Purchased the new Samsung Galaxy S5 on 9/15/14.
Incoming calls go directly to VM. Sometimes the phone works as it should and calls and messages came thru in a timely manner.
Mostly the calls go to VM and text messages are delayed. Vm doesn't show up as having a vm for hours.
I have gotten a new sim card, exchanged the phone and the new phone does exactly the same thing, I am now past my 14 days so I am stuck with this phone unless I agree to a warranty replacement phone from AT&T. (Same phone S5)
I have has 4 cases with AT&T and nothing has helped. Last case will be resolved bu Oct 4.
I will try turning off WIFI while at home and see if that helps.
I have reset the new phone, did not help. I don't understand why with 3 bars I can't receive calls.
Calling out is no problem. Incoming doesn't work correctly. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Friends of mine were at my house over the weekend and he had a samsung s4 and had the same problem after logging onto my wifi. It is the wifi causing the problem. I had an old modem and netgear router that we hooked up and then we were able to receive calls like you should. We switched out the modem/router combo on Sat to my older setup and my phone is still working normally! I called my dsl provider and told them about the problem as I just bought the modem/router combo from them recently.
They never heard of anything like this. I do find it hard to believe that the home wifi equipment disrutes the cell phone signal. But my phone is now working!!! Anyone ever heard of this or that can explain why this would happen I would love to hear about it.

Help getting XT1575 working again while in Japan. Please!

I'm in Japan for a couple of weeks for work and signed up for the Japan pack that Sprint offers. I spent almost an entire week working with Sprint support ( ) trying to get data roaming working properly on the phone without much luck (voice and text worked great), but yesterday I lost all connectivity but wifi. Figuring I must have changed something I shouldn't have, I saved everything I could and did a hard reset on the phone.
It still won't connect to any networks. I've re-downloaded PRL and device configs over wifi in the settings but it doesn't even attempt to connect to any wireless networks, or see any for that matter.
I have 2 guesses here but I'd like some kind of confirmation here before I take any action.
1: Maybe my radio firmware is corrupted somehow? I'm not exactly sure how to check it but it just doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. In the SIM status page it says searching for network, but I have no way to know if that's really the case.
2: Since the phone has a Sprint SIM, does it has to be on an actual Sprint network to initialize the networks? (Not Softbank's network here in Japan?) I spent over an hour on Google Voice with them last night trying to get an answer/help but got absolutely nowhere.
The phone is currently all stock but I have no problem unlocking and installing recoveries/software/roms if need be. Any ideas what I can do here or am I just stuck without communication until I get home next week?
Usually the best route is to get a local prepaid sim while traveling but honestly I have no idea what sprint offers for roaming in Japan. Check your plan and see if there is an add on needed.
I'm not alone!
Also THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!
It worked fine for me last time I came to Japan, about a year ago. This time, I only have voice and text, no data. Right now I'm backing everything up to do a factory reset.
Did you ever find a solution to this?
I'm not sure if you've already done your factory reset, but if you're on Sprint, don't do a reset. The phone can't reactivate itself off of Sprint towers. You have to be in the US when you do the reset. I was stuck with WiFi only for most of my time there because I reset mine.
I never found a solution other than dropping Sprint when I got back to the states. Switched to Verizon and never looked back, though I'm not sure what I'm going to do for my next trip with their ridiculous international rates.
I actually got it working last night.
Factory reset and restore over wifi
Update device config over wifi -> handles activation
Update PRL over wifi 3 times
Now it works
Oh, I'm glad it worked. Is yours on Sprint?
Yes, but I may have spoken too soon. It worked for a few hours and now isn't getting back on data. I think it may be SIM related, since I saw a weird SIM error pop up and rebooted my phone, which led to the data working the first time
They must have redone their activation system since I had my issue in July. At that time there was no way for the phone to reactivate without being on Sprint's system.
As far as the data, that's the same thing I had happen and they were never able to solve the problem. It would work for a little while then stop for no reason. If you find a solution I'd love to hear it though.
I'm wondering if I can flash a different radio or something

Note 4 no longer supported by T-Mobile No Network

My husband and I both have a stock N910T. When we woke up yesterday neither phone would get signal, and not even make wifi call. Went to TMo shop today they told me that they were no longer sending signal to Note 4's (Thanks for the heads up TMo). We really like these phones and I wonder if I could root them and flash a stable ROM and get service on them again. When I pull the sim it shows 5 bars, put the sim back and X. I have rooted many phones, but not since I got this one 6 years ago, so I'm sure I'm a bit rusty.
Any advice highly appreciated. TIA
I'm in the same boat with the note edge. It stopped working friday night for me. Put the sim in a stock note 4 and same thing, so I thought my sim card died. Went to the tmobile store on saturday and they said 2 people had came in with the same issue and they had note 4s.
What I don't understand is how they can just stop supporting a phone. I thought that if it accepts the sim card and has the proper bands it'll work. I mean for ****s sake my car takes a tmobile sim for a hotspot and traffic updates.
same exact. i just factory reset and updated stock to see if it would fix but it wont. Any solutions here??
Try to:
a. flash a custom TWRP (recovery) with Odin
IMPORTANT - after you flash TWRP PLEASE TAKE A FULL BACK-UP!
b. flash a custom ROM with root
c. why root? because you can change the build.prop file and "pretend" to be another phone (newer more likely) so that the lovely t-mobile can still allow your phone to connect to the network.
This way you have zero costs, you keep your note 4.
Unless it's too complicated or the procrastination level is TDH (too damn high)
Or you have the cash and buy something new(er).
There's info on this forum about all these steps.
Before you do anything - go and read, search on this forums and on youtube. There are a LOT of tutorials.
Please be careful and READ. Get educated about custom recovery/ROM's.
You will get good knowledge and your satisfaction on make things work will be enormous.
You will be responsible on your actions with the phone.
Good luck.
mine is already rooted with a custom rom. which parameters do you recommend changing in build.prop?
my audi is older than the note 4 and data works fine and calls work on a motorola L6 from 2005, so I doubt it's the age.
someone on reddit came up with a temporary solution until they fix this. you'll lose 4g/LTE tho
To set to 3G/2G turn on airplane mode and enter *#2263#* on the phone dialer. Then select GSM/WCDMA Auto. After that turn airplane mode off.
Hey all - same issue here - Note 4 stopped working Friday morning. I tried everything on my end (factory reset, ROM flash, SIM swap, etc). I even tore the phone down and checked the connections. I ordered a replacement SIM / SD card tray reader thinking that was the issue. Now I hear others having the same issue. I live in Colorado FWIW. Calling into T-Mobile now to see if I can get some info here.
---------- Post added at 02:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:31 PM ----------
After speaking on the phone with a tech support person, T-Mobile reported that they were aware of an issue with Note 4 users not being able to access the network. They said that they "were in contact with Samsung and were actively working on an issue" and reassured me that they would have a solution for customers soon. I sure hope so because I do not want to give up my Note 4!
Note 4 user here too. This sucks. I did the workaround on the dialer posted in one of the above posts, and now it connects. Says 4G at the top, but probably only 3G. That's fine for me in the meantime, but not acceptable in the long run. I just spent 2 days wiping the phone, unrooting, etc only to find this now! Got lots of work to do to get it back to my rooted state. Thankfully I have the backups to do it, just have to find the time now. Thanks T-Mobile!!
Has anyone heard any more on this issue?
Just had the same issue. Called T-mobile support and they had no idea of a widespread issue, said it was likely HW failure. I got a new SIM and that didn't help. Called local cellphone repair shop and they indicated they'd had several calls about this issue and fixed at least one so far by replacing the card reader. I applied the workaround above and got the phone working again so I don't understand why a new card reader is going to fix this.
Note 4 seems like it's back working on T-Mobile as of last night.
HI I purchased galaxy note 4 3 years ago in the first time I put him on i has that problem yet
But I live in curacao in the Caribbean and I think that the mother board was not good.
Then I has flight to medellin Colombia with the phone he began working I was glad but when I arrived to curacao from medellin the same problem
Sometimes he is working sometime not
I have the same problem T-mobile N910T

Thanks for the update! I reversed the workaround I applied earlier and mine is back to 4G LTE now.
Any update on this issue?
The N915-T is spotty and I'm trying to figure out why. It was officially kicked off the network by T-Mobile, but it still works. It connects to most towers but not to a particular one. Whenever I'm on that block the network can not be found. If I walk two blocks away it would connect to another tower and I can make calls. If I walk back toward the 'faulty' tower while on the call, the quality would degrade, the call drops and the phone would lose signal.
This would NOT happen with other phones - not even an older Galaxy S2.
This is likely a different issue altogether, as the phone actually connects and works elsewhere. I'm just hoping someone has an idea.
