ignore what the guy said, he's clueless. you want to make sure you are on MM bootloader (unofficially unlocked from a android marshmellow official ROM), install the latest official TWRP (you can do it through ZCX, just flash the recovery image like you flash a ROM, just change it to flash recovery in TWRP), and download firmware without emmc_appsboot.mbn (i'm sure you can find it on XDA). if you flash firmware with emmc_appsboot.mbn you will brick your device. you might have issues with encryption, so if you do, you just wanna wipe data. after that flash in the order you said above - firmware, ROM, gapps and then reboot.

Flash rom in edl mode. Use edl zip to put phone in edl mode. Run reboot file to put phone in edl mode.

After flashing Then u can use ur unlocking and zcx method. And update to latest twrp official 3.2.3
Flash only rom and gapps using latest twrp 3.2.3
No need to flash any firmware after that. Coz u r on latest firmware already..
Use OrangeFox twrp.

what is the best firmware. stable or the dev
Lol........ u r one true masterpiece.
Are u pretending dumb or r u truly one.. I already explained u . still u prefer to listen to noobs.
U dont need firmware if u flashed and come from 10.2 fastboot rom.
Firmware is nothing different but it is extracted from miui fastboot rom itself.
May God bless ur soul..
You don't even need an unlocked bootloader to flash custom ROMs anymore... Forget about bootloader stuff. But you will need an updated recovery... Flash latest twrp in twrp then you should be able to do custom roms. Latest havac for pie is the best from my experience. You'll need the latest firmware for it though

Sorry if this is a simple question; What I want to know is, do I have to use some recovery mod and flash from the SD card, or can I simply flash custom ROMs from odin 3.09, the same as I did for my stock rom?
Specifically Imperium ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706844&nocache=1
Many thanks.

You always need a custom recovery to flash roms from either your internal or external sd card
I'd suggest philz recovery just flash the .tar file from here in odin then enter recovery & flash away
Not sure if you have rooted your phone as yet if not follow this link first
Okay, I never used a custom recovery when flashing the stock rom.?
I can't just download and flash the rom in Odin from my pc then?

You aren't flashing a stock rom it's a custom rom hence the custom recovery ?

Okay, I need to start looking how to put a custom recovery on then.
I have rooted it using Odin already yeah

Yeah just flash it in pda then flash rom from philz recovery then it's done just setup required
You won't need odin again unless you want to return to stock (which I doubt).
P.s you should like the imperium rom you've been lookin at

Thanks, its between that one and Purified with Domination theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2454205). Not sure which to go for yet, it'll be down to style/reliability/stability/speed.
What I meant was, I can't flash the recovery in odin, then flash the new rom in odin too?

Once you have TWRP 2.8.7.0 successfully flashed, you should be able to flash any custom rom you want......
Are you certain that the TWRP flash is 100% successful?
Edit.....just noticed you have the H variant of the device......
This is the only TWRP you can use.....

What? SYSTEM is the ROM, when you flash a custom ROM, you 100% replace SYSTEM
No idea what you've been doing, but you do not need system to flash custom

I seriously don't know . But it's happend to me
Hello, today i downloaded the latest stable KK rom, and the China miui8 to do some tests in the new China rom, but couldnt flash because there was a error of "cant find flash_all, flash_except_storage, or even flash_except_data_storage. Bats. So i looked into the zip and there was no bats inside the folder.
I know i can simply try to flash via TWRP, but if i do that can i be able to reflash 4.4 rom via TWRP too if i want to come back? Last time i flashedLP bootloader , it wouldnt let me come back via recovery to KK bootloader. Only via miflash. Please give me some clarification if any of you already tried it!
Maybe you are using the wrong rom update package. The recovery rom is different from fastboot rom. If you are trying to flash this "miui_HM2XWC_6.6.23_a0619b1eb0_4.4" package then this is for recovery procedure only. You should download the fastboot (rom) version.

I downloaded both ones, LP rom for recovery and about 3 KK rom for fastboot(miflash). But the fastboot ones are missing the bat files, so i cant flash.
If you have any full download link please share xD

We need to know your model #. (Ex. 2014817 in my case) because flashing wrong model # of rom will give you problems with (service provider) radio signals.
I'm only downloading from official MIUI site.
I have rooted my op5 and got twrp recovery but every time I update the rom by flashing it from recovery the recovery goes back to stock. Is it normal? Or is there a way to keep the twrp recovry ever after updating.
You need to flash supersu/magisk after flashing a ROM update to keep TWRP

Yes, and flashing the stock ROM also flashes the stock recovery. Hence TWRP being replaced.
If you want to keep TWRP after a stock ROM flash, just flash the recovery img file right after you flashed the stock ROM.

Yes. I updated mine the exact same way.
But remember, flash them all at once and reboot only after you're done. Rebooting will replace TWRP with stock recovery and you won't be able to flash TWRP in stock.
Flash stock ROM, Magisk or SuperSU and a TWRP.img file, then reboot.

Firmware is 50mb zip file . the files are taken from fastboot rom and zip is made.
These files updates ur hidden partition like modem, bootloader, firmware of cam, audio, wifi, blueooth.
U dont need to flash firmware with every rom. It is flashed only once and stored permanantly in those partition. Format and wipe doesnt erase it.
Flash Only if u r officially unlocked bootloader by official method.
Flash only global file. Other one is china.

No rules. U can flash firmware any time . Its stored in hidden permanent partition.
Roms , gapps and kernels are flashed in system ,data , cache and dalvik and boot partition. Which can be erased or formatted using factory reset command or format command.
