Galaxy S10+ and blood pressure - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

Will it be possible to measure blood pressure in Galaxy S10+ ?

I'm guessing that like the S9 it does, but you're very limited on apps that use it. I've only found one for my S9 and that's "My BP Lab". I don't find it particularly accurate and maybe that's why Samsung Health won't support it.

My guess is that they can do it, but they are careful with it, because of the huge responsibility. They need to be absolutely sure on every aspect first.

My blood pressure is high just waiting on my Pre-order! lol

My BP Lab requires a cuff reading before it will read BP the first time but I can use it immediatelt after a cuff reading and the phone's reading will be at least 15 points or more higher every time. I didn't get the phone for that so it's not a big deal.

I really think that having such capability would be great achievement and would actually save lives. I'm looking very much forward for this technology to evolve. I didn't know it was still not so accurate. I expected it was already pretty precise.

If it is a consistent difference then it could still be helpful. I haven't actually used it enough to see if that's the case but I may try after I get my S10.

Very Dim Camera Flash LED after VJCandela?

Okay, I was using the camera flash from time to time as a torch and then the VJCandela app came along so I used that too. Usage maybe 2 or 3 times a week for 2-3 mins.
Now I have a very dim camera flash light, it actually looks like there is a black or brown spot in the center of the LED. I am pretty sure it is damaged, now and again it takes on a blue tinge if I test it again.
So I guess its back to O2 for warranty

This program is used to permit control of the flash light on various HTC Phones, to allow it to be used as a torch etc.
Note: this app may will cause permanent damage to your flash led over prolonged periods.
The app will disable itself after prolonged use, but still, use it at your own risk.

I know this is of little use after the fact, but there is a warning on the site.
This is the sort of thing that HTC should have thought about when including a flash LED on the device. Do they not do QA testing? Do they care that they are getting a lot of gear back for warranty repair?
I blame their close ties with Microsoft for this, after all, MS are the masters of rushing something to market and fixing the problems with it later, are they not?
I actually use VJCandela too, so I'll be back in this thread when my flash breaks to say "ME TOO!!!1!11one!" =)

I highly agree. I guess having Billions of dollars at their disposal made them forget how hard it is to earn money. It would be nice for them to be poor before they die and experience life at the other end of the spectrum.
Guys, what kind of periods are you using it for? The latest release has a built in timer to switch itself off after 15 seconds, but even then, are you using it for long blasts or just the odd flash?

Hi Guys,
No disrespect meant here and really not at all knocking Vijay555, but if the flash is used in a way it was not designed to be used then yes, it'll probably fail! Vijay555 warned of this and you took the risk. And to amazingly come back to knock Microsoft about it..?!
The flash will have rating for continuous use and for pulsed use - if it's used continuously at it's pulsed rating, it will fail.
Again, not knocking anyone, but keep it in perspective guys!

I don't have a problem with vijay's app nor my flash as I don't use it that much. But my comment was directed not on the flash of the Universal, but to Microsoft as an entity, seems to me they just want to do what they want rather than consider also what the consumers want.
Same here... I didn't intend to hurt anyone's feelings.
you broke your own toy
My thoughts are with bloney on this one.
You broke your own toy, and now you want to blame someone else for it. The LED wasn't built for continuous illumination, but you ventured forth anyways. if it was actually meant for that, they probably would've included a free app for it anyways. not defending M$ or HTC, but try to use some common sense before you get over-enthusiastic about your expensive toys. It already does alot more than other expensive phones, without the gimmicky hacks, at a relatively good price (for me anyways). and because opportunities for good things to come cheaply for me is valuable, I try to treat it as such. You probably should too, instead of complaining here.
daryl425 - I don't think anyone's blaming anyone else here (I hope ), but IMHO there are two competing ways of looking at VJCandela and similar hacks:
1. They're all unsupported by the Manufacturer and OS designer. There may be a good reason for that, so play it safe, and don't risk your system with unsupported/unofficial products; or
2. Live on the edge, unlock, reflash, use and abuse your hardware to get the most out of it. There will be casualties of war - expect it.
I think most of us are wise enough to use our own common sense and live somewhere between the two extremes. If the Universal had cost me $1000, I wouldn't be using it as a $0.50 flash light, risking my hardware.
I wrote the app, for the fun of writing the app. I don't use my Universal as my main phone, so I can "afford" some minor damage to it in the pursuit of art. But, I strongly advise everyone else to use their own sense, and not sit on the flash for 30 minutes, or do anything else that might risk their precious hardware. Frankly, I hardly use the app at all. However, on the odd occassion that I do, it's come in handy. And it warms my geek heart every time
So, use caution. But remember, every single piece of software you use that isn't official (and a hell of a lot of those that are) could damage your system. Be careful!
But - don't forget to have fun as well. Think how much innovation has come out of this board and guys prepared to push their systems beyond the limit (ie Buzz et al. I don't consider myself within that heady band. I'm just a tinkling tinkerer).
V
hey guys,
its not such a big deal if you burn your flash! I just went to the local camera store (not the digital ones, the age old film based cams store) and found a flash led with almost the same size and rating. I opened up my device (just once again!), took the "dimmed out" led and replaced it. Of course, i got the connector pin from my previous flash led and used the same one. Now it works fine, and i guess the quality of this led is much better.
cheers,
San
To clear up:
I haven't blown my flash (yet). I rarely use it.
I mentioned MS in a disparaging manner because they have a history of releasing products without actually making sure they are ready to go to market (hence all the ServicePacks and patches), and this seems to be what HTC did with this LED. MS works very closely with HTC and I made a joke about the behaviour pattern being contagious.
Whilst I agree that this unofficial hack is intended to utilise the LED in a way that it was not designed for, which idiot sat in his/her lab at HTC and decided that nobody would ever send their PDA in for a warranty repair because of it? Surely this is the kind of thing that bean counters go nuts over? To put an LED that is a little more reliable would have added a penny to the manufacture, as opposed to spending pounds on postage, labour, parts, time, customer support and so forth.
If it can be done, it will be done. Surely this burning out will happen with normal usage too? How many people use the flash on their mobile to read with in bed, find something in the car, blind their friends as a joke? This is nothing to do with Vijay's app, it is a bad choice of materials, costing HTC money and reputation.
I hope this clears up my thoughts when I posted earlier in the thread, and if not, just put it down to too much Slashdot reading =)
PReDiToR - I entirely agree. Although, should a hypothetical guy on the Clapham Omnibus feel the need to trade in his Universal for a newer one, it might be a convenient way to make a warranty claim...
I've never known LEDs to blow unless wired incorrectly. Of course, as stated, it was only designed for bursts, but even so, as you say, LEDs costs pennies, the Universal doesn't. Hopefully, that won't be our loss, and get them to think about the economics of such components in future.

Hello again Guys,
Not wanting to drag this on or to disagree with you Guys, but I've been looking at some LEDs at work (eg http://www.luxeon.com/pdfs/DS49.pdf) for use in a LED strobe and there's a whole load of LEDs out specifically designed for use as a flash.
So, assuming a purpose built flash LED is used in our HTC devices, it's not a matter of an inferior components being selected, but rather an entirely appropriate component that is designed for a very specific task.
From the data sheet, it states that for flash applications the maximum current (up to 1A) should be used. But for continuous operation 350mA max.
All LEDs have a finite lifetime and trebling the max rated current will obviously cause the component to fail pretty quickly!
Obviously the LED I've looked at probably isn't the one in the HTC units (could be though!), but hopefully shows that HTC might not have just been skimping on the flash!
Having said all that, I most commonly use my flash as a torch, so it's good to know it's replacable!
Hope this is of interest - it isn't meant to be not picking!
Bloney
I certainly wasn't complaining about Vijay's app
I was just pointing out my led is now knackered, lol
Keep up the good work Vijay.

No flaming of freeware and shareware
Hi Vijay.
I certainly don't remember a flashlight feature on any adverts for my MDA Pro. Once again, it's good to innovate, but users really can't blame you/HTC/MS/etc. only themselves for this. This is just like the classic CPU overclock situation, you can rev it up, but most people advise to watch out for any burning smoke if you push the pedal too hard
No one here is blaming you or your app, me certainly least of all. My point, just like bloney, is that before someone screams and shouts and cursing out other people, they should really take a look at themselves first. Although most shareware developers usually leave the standard "Use at your own risk" sign on their apps. Something else users should remember.
But then again, if they're screaming and shouting and cursing other people out, they might not be all that good to look at in the first place
Out of interest though??? I know you can leave the flash on whilst using the camera app, I used to use mine this way before. But does the flash timeout on it's own? Also is the flash actually brighter when using Vjcandela as opposed to the camera app? I never noticed it being any different?
Just wondering if I could have done exactly the same thing with just using the camera app over time? After all it does not work like a flash in a traditional sense.
As I said before, keep up the good work Vijay
Regards, Simon
Guys, I think I've said everything that needs to be said on this thread in terms of why we write and use "cutting edge" apps, and risk "bleeding"
Simon: the current version (on my website and XDA forums) has a 15 second timeout I think. This can be overridden, but the override also has a timeout, so it shouldn't be possible to sit on it for toooo long now
The flash is enabled at normal brightness as used in the Camera app. It can go even brighter, but in the circumstances, it's probably not advisable, eh?!
As bloney says, I think the LED is probably rated differently for burst vs sustained current, so hopefully the camera app wouldn't normally burn out the led. But I suppose we'll find out over time with those using the camera app a lot?

kenetic generator?

here is a thought.. i had 4 watch batteries die close togather and decided to get a Seiko Arctrua which has a little kenetic generator in it to keep the battery charged. i wonder if anyone has ever thought of something like this for a cell phone... it certianly gets a lot of movement in my pocket as i walk and would greatly improve battery charge time. maybe as a plun in case or somethign to start with... just a thought..
Nice idea, but the watches in question have a very low power consumption, and I doubt you could get enough to recharge or even run the phone, maybe a couple of minutes extra runtime over a few hours, but nothing massive.
Chris
unless us nuclear charge ...
i think that it could be done because the kinetic generator would be a lot larger than the one used in the watch. i am thinking that the best way to do this, disregard how it would look, would be to make one that replaces the whole back of the phone. I think that it is a good idea I wish there were more people nerdy enough to want this so it could actually be produced.
you would probably still have to charge your phone though.
it would be huge and not that great but a fun toy.
well, wish no more. Someone did it. (pretty sparse on the details, though)

[PETITION] Vote for Samsung to cheer up trapped Chilean miners!

Samsung, help cheer up the trapped Chilean miners
As many of you will know, at the very moment 33 miners are trapped inside a collapsed mine. Until rescuers are able to get to them, there is very little the miners can do except to try to stay alive. It is estimated that it may take until Christmas, 4 months(!) from now, until they can be rescued.
Ongoing news coverage via Google News (link)
Carilion Clinic doctor says Chilean miners face mental health concerns (link)
Trapped Chile miners: Nasa asked to 'help with psychological trauma' (link)
As explained by a NASA astronaut, trying to stay alive while being trapped in a very small confined space means much more than just getting enough to eat and drink. It is very important psychologically for the miners to have something to do to pass the time, to keep them from going insane during their long wait for rescue.
Currently, the only way rescuers are able to transport items to and from the place where the miners are trapped is by some narrow, extremely long bore shafts. There is no way to send down very large or heavy objects...but small, light smartphones should not be a problem!
Being a gadget freak like many of you probably are, too, I would like to petition Samsung to provide the miners with some of our beloved Galaxy S phones
Of course, making ordinary phone calls would be impossible down at that depth underground, but it would certainly be possible for the miners to make video recordings. Maybe even a wireless hotspot device lowered down into the shaft would enable the miners to video call their loved ones topside.
Also, the miners can use the excellent multimedia features to watch movies, listen to music, read ebooks and maybe play some games while they are down there.
I believe it would be a very generous gesture if Samsung could provide these desperate lonely people with something to cheer them up.
This is why I would like to ask you to sign this petition so we can present it to Samsung asking them to help the miners in Chile.
Please reply to this petition by stating your name and any contact info you wish to share. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Signed,
Alain Kalker, Enschede, The Netherlands.
MOD: Chainfire, mikechannon, would you please consider crossposting this thread to the relevant forums, maybe link to it from the portal? Thanks in advance!
One question..how do they charge the phones?
What about batteries... should they send down a new box every day?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
External high capacity USB chargers with replaceable packs (5000mAh+) should do the trick. I've no doubt Samsung can come up with the right specs for those. Beats having to peel off the back cover with gritty hands anytime!
If even NASA's on the job, running out of juice will be the least of the problems
NASA has a wii....
I vote for playboy magazines.
they can probably lower a very long extension cord and usb charger for every one
i saw some video of the miners on the news
they have some sort of webcam down there
Many mining companies send stuff like ipods down anyway (at least they did in Australia). Mining companies are nearly pure profit, so they should be doing this anyway..
In that case, they might as well send down a iPhone4. Not like they are going to get reception problems down there
I wonder if Iridium Sat phones work down there..

I do hope samsung battery does not explode under extream temperature down there.
There is not point have android phone without market. So they need internet too.
I think iphone work better down there.

2. Iphone has more games in app store
3. They need flash to take photo and video. (i9000 does not have flash)

Well, name a better alternative
iPhone 4's are not such a great idea I think, their (external) antennas will short out in the probably damp conditions there. Lol about that one I dare you it's a serious concern.
Also I think the SGS is easily the phone with most features per ounce, so they're not just sending down a heavy stack of shiny pieces of glass (iPhones, whether Gorilla glazed or not). Dangerous that, if the payload gets unhooked!. Just imagine a stack of iPhones barrelling down a tube at terminal velocity, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near!
(Oh my, I've really become tipsy with sleep deprivation working on the fm radio fix, joking about such a serious topic.)
I really hope these people down there get all the help they need, FAST.

Battery & Display suck; why the love?

Hi guys. I just bought the Acer Iconia and wanted to give a few of my initial thoughts.
First thing I noticed after performing all the updates was the lag. After exiting applications, it takes a little while for the icons to re-appear on the homescreen. I haven't added any besides the default. Also, when scrolling with the browser, it tends to render in square blocks.
Battery life..I've read reviews that it goes up to 8 hours while others say it lasts between 4-5 hours, and others say 6 hours. I understand that what we do varies, and the battery needs to be calibrated. After having it on for 3 hours and playing FieldRunners for 45 min (the rest of the time it was idle with all wireless connections off), I'm at 75% remaining. That's pretty crummy. Not even a calibration will improve it THAT much.
Also, when viewing a white background, you can see every "box" or pixel. Goodness, that's pretty frickin' bad. I'm not expecting any ridiculous "retina display" here but this is just a cheap panel.
I went into Staples to compare it to the Galaxy Tab and Xoom, and I see why Iconia is priced $100 less.
So, serious question. Why all the love for this thing?
Thanks!

With 14 posts, maybe you shouldn't comment. And I can't imagine a troll would actually take the time to write up a full post. What a waste of time that'd be.
I genuinely want to know. Perhaps there's something I'm missing. I want to love it because for $299 (after the Staples $100 off tablets coupon) it might not be a bad deal even with my complaints. But for those who actually spent the full $400, what do you actually like about it?
If you wanna go to staples n pay $300 (not $100!) For extra bulk and a non functioning micro SD, or for a device that doesnt even have a micro sd, USB, or HDMI, go for it. If you feel like a thin piece of plastic is a better investment than stainless steel, that's your money. But don't polute our forums with a "grass is greener" thread. You dont like the Iconia cuz it has the same battery as every other device (the only difference is some companies lie more in their specs- I've tested them all, they are all about the same) or cuz you can see pixels on a white screen, go somewhere else.
It's $100 OFF, making it $299 as I posted above. Read the post and learn to write full words in english. Good lord, tough to get a real answer out of babies.
Don't be too hurt if people knock the device. I'm allowed to call it like I see it, and the reason I posted is so someone can point out the actual good parts of the device (besides USB port).
Does anyone else see the issues I was referring to in my original post?

Don't diss the Odom, you can't make any friends that way.
For me it was the ports it offered. If the galaxy offered a micro SD I probabally would have bought it. The Acer on the other hand offers a lot of ports, which I found very fun. On the Xoom issue the Acer actually out performs it on display as thy have the same one but Acer codes it better. That has been proven in tests.
To break it down it was the price and the ports. The graphics are fine, watched The Green Hornet on this last night and I was satisfied with the performance. But to tell the truth I'm not a graphics whore.
I looked and played with all of these devices and I stick with my decision to buy the Acer.

My slight trolling aside, I agree with Torisen. The screen is better than most devices, albeit topped by the Galaxy. I find the extra ports and functionality a major deal breaker for me, as well as the price difference vs what you get with the galaxy (to me the xoom was never even a question, there is a reason google views it as a flop.) Also, I'm personally a fan of.the stainless chassis, both in appearance and functionality. As for the lag, a real world test of the galaxy provided similar results due to the bloated Samsung ui. Another key advantage is the near stock system, free of bloatware. After weighing all of my options, I am very happy with my iconia true, their whole update process was screwy, but they seemed to have cleared it up a little (for instance at least most everyone got the 4.010.13 update at the same time!) In yhe end, if youre not happy with it, it is a ffree market, get a different one.

Sorry, but I tend to agree at least a little with Strider_mt2k because I don't understand posts like this. If I did not like a $300 device that I purchased, I wouldn't criticized it on the dedicated forum for that device, and then expect strangers to convince me to keep it.
My "love" for this tablet is definitely not going to do anything towards negating your disdain for it. Technology life is too short to keep a device that so obviously disappoints you. Return it and get a tablet that you want.

The battery stand 8 hours if
- you do not use 3D Games constantly
- Brigthness arround 50%
I use about 12 hours straight my tablet, wifi constantly open, reading ebook, playing games (a little), going internet....
but I charge my tablet every 1.5 day or 2 days sometimes... no I do not use my tablet every 2 minutes
so far with GPS, full brightness, Sygic navigator... about 5hrs++ wich is nice... since I do not drive that long, and I don't need the navigator 5 hours in a row.
playing games 3D . 6hrs ++
playing normal games (angry bird) 8hrs...
Charge the tablet until 100% do not overnight, let the battery drain until 5% oftenly. that's how I use my tablet.
I do not use OVERCLOCK or else. when I make those feedback
Go get an iPad 2 then and stop whining. Oh wait... the display still sucks on an iPad. At least you get a great range of connectivity with the Iconia.
i work at staples, i have had the time to play with all the tablets, i personally recommend the Acer over all of them, even to my customers
the 100 dollar coupons kill our stores sale figures, but i used one and bought the Acer.
i do not regret it one bit, i love my acer. you shouldnt have your face that close to the screen to see the pixels, if you do need to, you need to get glasses

Those aren't pixels! You're seeing the grid used for touch-input. You're mixing the two concepts!
As for the grid: yes, it is sometimes visible. I personally don't get bothered by it since it isn't as clearly visible as you make it out to be. But I can understand if some others are bothered by it. It is even mentioned in all the better reviews that the grid can be seen easier than on other tablets. If the grid bothers you that much then go and get another tablet. But bear in mind that even iPads have the grid and atleast I can see it on those, too.
So, serious question. Why all the love for this thing?

Because it is great hardware for a great price.
I've had mine for 48 hours, and I have to say I'm loving it. I did take into consideration the $100 off, and getting this device for $299. You can argue positives and negatives on devices of equal price, but for $299, the A500 is a bargain.
The two issues mentioned- display: yes, the transformer's display is brighter. BUT...I've read many, many posts over at the ASUS threads about light bleading. Further, about how the Transformer can "bend" a little due to plastic construction, and this in turn causes further problems. Still, I liked the TF...I was torn over between the two, so don't think I'm hating on ASUS here. But the display is about a 7.5-8/10 for me compared to the BEST displays I've seen. But its a 10/10 for $299.
Battery: I have only good things to say about battery life so far on mine. No, I don't play 3D games constantly, but compared to the many android phones I have had, I realize I'm not always thinking about having this plugged in just in case I'll need the battery power later.
The other points that were in the A500's favor were the aluminum as stated, full USB port (not a feature you should discount), mini usb port, etc. I can't imagine ONLY being able to transfer files via miniSD. That would be a pain.
Most of the other gripes I have are about Honeycomb...it's not up to competing directly yet with iPad, just a few bugs that keep it from going head to head right now. But that has nothing to do with the unit.
I got two A500's now by the way, and both seem to be working as advertised, they were better than I expected when I made the decision to buy them.
+ 1 for all the love here for our devices on such a hateful thread

Pretty Good Read- Anandtech In Depth Review

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5630/indepth-with-the-windows-8-consumer-preview/1
Very LONG read, for those who haven't looked at it yet
But very well written. Not biased much at all. He brings up some good points, and makes very logical arguments.
I do want to point out one thing tho - almost every average joe PC user used a mouse as the sole input method, unless words need to be written, then you use the keyboard. As the author of the article pointed out, to use W8 with any type of efficiency you need to use either a touchscreen or lots of keyboard shortcuts. all of us tech geeks (and yes, if you're reading this, even if you're a noob that means you know exponentially more about tech than most people) are willing to learn and adapt, but most people don't even know that windows HAS keyboard shortcuts. it took me 20 minutes to understand hot corners 100%. how long do you think it'll take your tech illeratite mother to figure it out? a month? my mother still doesn't grasp how bookmarks in Chrome (which i installed for her so she could have an adblocked web) work, and she's had it for about 6 months.
point stands, yes, for us the learning curve isn't that bad. but for your average user off the street who doesn't know what a browser is (seriously, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4MwTvtyrUQ ) the learning curve is going to be too high to handle.
It is a well written article. To me the biggest argument is does it even matter for the average person to know all of the ins and outs of the start screen. As long as they can figure out how to click on the big icon labeled Internet, they can probably get to what they need. Once you're in the browser, metro is no longer applicable.
I think the basics are pretty easy to grab with minimal time on the system. So far I haven't had anybody NOT get it when I let them use it. Only a few minor questions at first which is normal for anything new.
Hmmm....
Well, the problem is that average users are very reluctant in breaking their old habits and often do not even WANT to learn something new. Unless something works roughly the same it used to before, they are not interested and write it off, because the "old one" was "so much better". I'm not saying all the people are like that, but a great deal really is, I used to work at tech support for quite a while and I think the video above is pretty accurate in terms of literacy in this field. People are very quick to write things off for the pettiest of reasons and 'interest' and plain curiosity fade fast.
