T-mobile H918, is my phone permanently unlocked or only temporarily? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I bought the phone from Ebay and it was advertised as unlocked, but when I got the phone, I noticed the T-Mobile Device Unlock app with the options of permanent unlock or temporarily unlocked. I tried doing permanent unlock but it said it didn't work, but temporarily unlocked did.
What confuses me is that before i try all this, I tried 2 different sim cards from 2 different networks and it worked fine. The app says that if it is permanently unlocked, the app will disappear. So is there a way to check if my phone is truly permanently unlocked or only temporarily?
FWIW my phone has been fully refurbished and the s/n has been altered before. So idk what has been changed on this phone.

I'm pretty sure it's temporary, since not only is it not gone but you also pressed temporary which is allowing the other service to work

weird thing is that my phoned worked as "unlocked" before i press temporary unlock. Unless the seller did it and factory reseted the phone so that i don't see it. But anyways, i went here: https://www.t-mobile.com/verifyIMEI.aspx and entered my imei and it said it has a outstanding balance. Gonna email the seller about that...

Has anyone unlocked their g1 running on cyanogen?

Well, the story goes like this:
Bought a g1 and the second logical step was to put in cyanogen. After a while I thought that an unlocked phone would be even better. Went online and purchased the unlock code and tried to use it while running cyanogen. Did not work. Flashed to rc29, tried again, did not work. Then I went to another unlock provider and this guy, gave me the same code as the first, based on my IMEI ( I don't have a fake IMEI), he tried it as well and did not work. Then he searched for different version of the code based on the IMEI for different htc products ( it seems that they have some accounts with htc and for IMEI they receive the unlock code). We also tried it with a goldcard which only made my g1 scream that I don't have a simcard inside.
Bottom line, did cyanogen mood do something to the unlock procedure ( hard locked the phone on tmobile - on tmobile the phone works fine) ? Or I just happened to have a weird phone, Thank you.
Btw, my unlock code is 92179512. Feel free to try it. It would be funny as hell if it were to unlock someone elses phone, and if it does, let me know as well.
I unlocked my phone on a MUCH older version of CM, so I wouldnt be able to tell you if anything has changed to effect the process. However, if you're a TMO customer, you do know that after 90 days they will GIVE you the unlock code for free, right?
I also have unlocked it on Cyanogen mod, but I believe I was on 4.2.7.1 at the time.... not that long ago really.... but T-Mobile does indeed give away the unlock code for free, and it worked flawlessly.
Neither the ROM, SPL or radio can effect the simlock. It's not Cy's ROM that's causing the problem...
What do you mean 'it doesn't work'? Does the phone reject the code?
Thank you for the reply. Well the problem is that I don't have a contract with Tmobile since I don't have the money for it. I bought it off from someone and used Tmobile prepaid sim card, which works fine. And, because of that, Tmobile won't provide me with an unlock code .
Regarding the code, when I type in the code it says network unlock unsuccessful, so I can't do much about it. I'm trying to update to the latest stock donut and see what happens.
Ah that sucks :-( I really can't of any options for you, since any codes generated will always be the same...

notice in the replies above, that cyanogen nor spl, nor anything software related can change your unlock status.
you already have an unlock code, and since you've had it generated from two different sources, i believe that code is correct for THAT IMEI number. that being said, did you copy the imei number from the sticker on the inside, or from what the phone shows in "PHONE INFO" ? I'd make sure they both match.
i also have a phone that is flacky about SIMs. haven't found an explanation yet, I think some of the boards have bad solder joints, or there is another hardware problem that causes similar errors. no proof yet.
try a friends Tmo sim card, and if his is recognized, and allows data connection, you'll know it's your phone that is locked, and that all the hardware is working. i'll bet you entered the wrong code because the sticker inside was wrong, or you fat fingered it. just a guess.
good luck, please update the thread when/if you find a definite answer.
I would bet the IMEI on the sticker and on the board are different... where did you buy said phone and for how much? It could very well be a refurb, which will have bits and pieces from several different phones, and thus could have the SIM locked guts for phone 666 and the case from phone 888 type thing.
Yep, checked it 10 times the first time I bought the code online. The same imei in about this phone is on the sticker. After I saw it did not work, I went to a local unlock shop around my place and the guy there checked it again more than 6 times. So.. weird eh? And both guys got the same code from HTC based on that IMEI
Sounds like this may be a hardware error. If that is the unlock that is generated then it should just work. The unlock does not really pertain to the rom or anything else that people usually mod. Also, maybe ask that dude why he was giving up that phone, maybe there is really something wrong with it.
the only other thing left is get an turbo unlocker chip that sits between SIM and phone
pain in ass to install but I have done it with out cutting the SIM card
I am guessing someone had typed the code in incorectly .. they can be permiatly locked if wrong code has been entered
also just because it was another person does not mean their MEI source wasn't the same
I guess they worked out they work ,,, I payed $5 for mine .. now 4x the price
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEXT-SIM-TUR...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item4cec3cab8c
The unlock codes sources are all the same. I lost over 100$ trying to get unlock codes from them but 80% of them don't work (only the ones for htc phones). I use a turbo sim with my G1 and is really easy to install. just buy one and cut your sim where the CHIP from the turbo sim is located. It works flawlessly.
Im just throwing this out there to say that I was able to successfully unlock my g1 with CM 4.2.10.1
Other than that I would just be repeating what was already said if I was to give any advice.
Best of luck man.

Actually, they will give you an unlock code after 90 days of being a customer and every 90 after the last time you got an unlock code. They will give you an unlock code the same day you buy the phone if you meet those requirements.
Sorry if this is irrelevant to the rest of the thread, but assuming I unlock on JF 1.5 (yea I'm behind) to ATT, and wipe everything to install a HeroUI ROM of some sort, will the unlock still be in effect or will I need to unlock the phone again?
Thanks.

You'll be ok.
I actually like JUST did it on a coworkers(I admit, going from WiMo to Android is a learning curve, but its easy), he got his from craigslist, had JF 1.5 on it. He used it for like a week, complained about sluggishness (he did have like 20 apps constantly running) Anyway, after a few beers and lurking here (it was when I was deciding what HTC to get) we decided to go to CM (latest build). Everything went fine step by step.
I cannot vouch for your particular ROM but for CM it was fine.

[Q] Bought a Stolen Nexus 4. Now what

Ok stupid me. I bought a Nexus 4 from a guy off craigslist. He turned the phone on and all functions worked. I didn't have the sim pin and nor did he so I was not able to insert my sim card and check. Once I got home, and put my sim card in the phone keeps deleting everything. ESN check on Swappa is clear. Now the guy does not pick up my calls texts and his phone is off. Am I stuck with a paperweight? What are the legal ramifications?

The phone is plain stock without any modifications. I will try and load a factory image on the phone. I just don't want the cops coming after me or someone capturing my data.

That is probably your only option since you don't know the sim pin
Unlock the bootloafer then flash factory image. Then pray for it dont be IMEI locked. Its sad when people scam us.

if the ESN/IMEI checks out with swappa you don't have a paperweight. call T-Mobile and register your device.
factory reset every and if it still isn't working try installing factory images.
you're only stuck with a paperweight if its reported stolen (which only works if the phone was bought from T-Mobile directly.) or if it doesn't work whatsoever

galaxy s5 sim locked after reformat

Hey everyone, My dad got his sim locked Verizon galaxy s5 G-900V unlocked a year back and it was working great with his T-mobile sim card. Until few weeks ago when he started to experience that his signal kept dropping and anytime he made calls he got this message on the other line stating ""your account is not authorized to make calls to this phone number "" and this one as well """your phone is not activated to activate your phone please press n key""" . This problem kept persisting until he only could make calls a few times a day because he wasn't getting any signal. I thought that a factory reset might fix the problem but after I did that to my surprise the phone sim-locked back itself to Verizon , I also noticed that if you try and make a call with the locked phone it gives the same message about the phone not being activated like before. So my questions is why did the factory reset sim-lock a phone that was already unlocked and second any idea what was the cause of those messages that prevented the phone to make calls and the fact that they are the exact same messages you get when you are making a call with a incorrect sim card with a sim locked phone.
Bump ... Anyone ???

Regarding unlock problem(network re-locked)

Who already got permanant unlocked guys, Can you let me know "Device Unlock" app icon dispaying on the App drawer after Factory reset.
I known that Device unlock icon should be gone(Exactly Disabled in App manager) and first permanent unlocked success, Device unlock app gone(As Disabled). Do factory reset then still Device unlock app gone(Disabled) in the App drawer? If keep permanent unlock and run device unlock app, what kind of message dispaying in the Device unlock app? Can you capture and share to here?
Also have you ever been network relocked symptom? I had Tmobole note5 and it suddenly network relocked. Reason is mystery. One day I just eject the sim then insert the sim. Thats it.
Who same experinced guys, how can you resolve this relock problem?

Yes, Actually i asked at least 10 times or over about this re-lock problem.
But no luck. They said that network relocked meaning is just network locking problem and this Note5 IMEI indicate outstanding balance or financing.
T-mobile REP. said device contract & financing problem only resolve account owner. But this account owner(ebay seller) cant't reach now. Because I bought this item one year ago.
Yeah, I was using this T-mobile Note5 unlocked status about one year. But after one year and one day, it suddenly relocked. Still i can't believe why my Note5 re-locked.
The important thing is previous owner(ebay seller) now can't reach out. May he is busy or he no longer login to ebay.
At least i don't have to request T-mobile unlock officially. Because i am not real owner of this Note5 device.
So i found 3rd party unlock service, but recently t-mobile device unlock app service price is increased to $130. Its too high cost for unlocking.
I am very confusing how can i resolve this network relock problem.
Think of it, when i first reviced this unlocked T-mobile note5 from ebay buyer, Device unlock app exists on app drawer.
(Refer the Attachment #1 image)
So, when i executed the Device unlock app, message indicate as below.
(Refer the Attachment #2 image)
Code:
Unlock failed
Unlock approved : Mobile device is permanently unlocked.
I think above unlock fail message is wrong and above message keep since network relocked.
So.. Have you tried a different carrier sim on it to confirm if it's locked or not? If you're using only T-Mobile, why are you worried about device unlock app?

Sure, Actually I am living at South Korea, So everytime korean SIM insert into this device and still locked as attached screenshot.
I hope to verify this "Device unlock" app's concept for verify my Note5 relock problem.
As I already said my Note5 device unlock app keep displaying at App drawer since permanent unlocked.
I think that is incorrect symptom and hope to know this T-mobile unlock concept
Code:
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-14011
If you completed a Permanent Unlock, the applications disappear from the device app list.
verified or changed on Galaxy S7 edge(G935T) model.
Really curious point is When permanent unlocked, Device unlock app disappear /disabled from App drawer even though after Factory reset.
I'm not sure if it was factory unlocked by T-Mobile or if it was unlocked by 3rd party and sold on ebay.. my opinion is that several people have unlocked by T-Mobile and they have installed G935U Rom so it doesn't lock itself.. your best bet might be T-Mobile support with details of your usage or 3rd party unlock..

Thanks your detail explanation and good advice.
Regarding official T-mobile response, they said as follows.
Code:
That being said, it's definitely important to know that if it's a T-Mobile Note 5 and you try to use a different carrier's SIM card in it, it may not work unless the device is SIM unlocked to accept service from another carrier. Even more important to note is that the device will ALWAYS be tied to the original owner. This means even if it has a clean IMEI now, if something happens down the road (it's not fully paid off yet, and the original owner stops making payments on it, or if they report it as lost/stolen to insurance, or if they simply reach out to us and request to block the IMEI), this can change that status at any time. There is no way to prevent this, and if it does happen, the only way to get it unblocked is for the original owner to reach out to take care of whatever the issue is. Does this all make sense? I want to be sure, so you don't run into an issue where you buy a phone that you someday cannot use! Let me know what questions you have!
In short, T-mobile device always tied to original user if device have finaning, only original user can resolve this problem, not second buyer like me(ebay buyer)
Yeah, I think remain key is only 3rd party unlock solution. But 3rd party unlock solution price is now too expensive. About $130
Hope to 3rd party unlock price go down nearby $50.

Yeah, At least not blacklisted.
Yesterday I found another solution and resolved this problem.
My conclusion is it's double fault both Samsung and T-Mobile. It meaning first unlock not processed perfectly and it would have been cause relock problem.
Detail things of this provlem will update soon with timeline and evidences.
My GS7 recently re-locked as well after trying the G930U ROM. It was unlocked via the app after 40 days of service, and worked fine on AT&T for a little while. I recently went back to the G930T ROM and the device unlock app showed back up. It now throws the same error - "Unlock Failed: Mobile Device is Permanently Unlocked". Device is not blacklisted, and I no longer have an AT&T sim to try.

LG V20 H918 Unlock Code used/Successful?

Hi there guys,
I seem to have an issue, on my LG V20 H918 I order an unlock code. I figured out a method to make it prompt for the code and bypass the T-Mobile unlocking app all together, however, here's the issue.
I received Three codes in with the markers
NCK:8565570142041856
SPCK:9791172928931644
NSCK:2448289909387735
NOTE: Codes included because they do not identify me or my device directly.
First I entered NCK and got "Network unlock successful" and went on assuming that was the end to it, however, after rebooting it prompts me for the Network Unlock Pin again. After entering the same (NCK) I was this time told the unlock was unsuccessful, so I tried the other codes provided all with the same Network unlock request unsuccessful response.
So my ultimate question is, what the you suppose the first success did and how can I finish the job? If it weren't for me figuring out how to access manual code entry, I wouldn't have spent money on this code.
How I accomplished bypassing the unlock app and getting a unlock prompt was by flashing AOKP and booting with a unauthorized SIM card, I'm just confused because what did that first successful unlock do? Why would it prompt me for the unlock code again and not accept the first successful code. I'm not sure if my device is unlocked or not at this point considering that, is it possible that the initial successful unlock enabled another band to be used in an unlocked state or even unlocked the device just the app does another step I'm failing to do manually to finalize this unlock.
I'd appreciate your opinions and advice in this situation, I personally feel like this might lead to something or either I'm running into a dead end another individual has also.
If you pay for it on like an installment plan you have to pay it off completely before you can unlock it. They keep it locked so you don't just do a promo and leave to someone like AT&T.

I'm not actually sure what the status of this device was, I bought it 3rd party from an Ebay seller. Any speculation on what the first "Unlock request successful" did if anything?
No idea unlocking phones isn't my specialty. But possibly the phone is blacklisted which is making it hard to unlock. Honestly what I'd do is take it to a T-Mobile store and ask them what's up.

Tried giving them a call, they appear to get very rude when they hear the word "unlock" which is sad, I take it they don't particularly care for people getting device unlocks? She hung up on me and the other agent just completely shut me off, she tried to offer me a contract but no further details which is really irritating.
That's unlike their service. It's possible you called at a bad time. More mid day is when they're as helpful as can be. I would take it to a store if possible and just tell them your situation I've done that before and they bent over backwards for me at my store.

Unfortunately, nothing more. Still haven't managed to figure out exactly what it did, I did discover that the phone does not have money owed on it.. Not entirely sure what the chock this up to really. I cannot replicate the results to investigate with logcat, I know that my attempts didn't permanently lock my device thankfully.
