Hi everyone,
I am currently fighting to get my HU working again (here), but I wanted to post a side question here for all the electricians out there, since it doesn't really have anything to do with flashing the unit.
I got myself a power supply, that outputs around 13V and can go up to 10.5A. It was previously used to power another HU so it should be working fine. However, when I connect the Android HU, it refuses to do anything. The display stays black and nothing is really happening. I connected the Power and S-Contact (?, the one that gets power once you turn the key) to the + and the Ground to the - outlet of the PU. I'm not sure, if I need anything else. It really does just stay black. I measured the voltage on the end of the Quadlock connector and it _does_ output about 13.5V, so it definitely has power.
Any ideas on what else I could try? Thanks in advance.

Blown fuse in the (back of the) unit? Did you check that?

Hi surfer63,
yes, indeed, that was the first thing I did. Still looking good (the "bridge" is still connected)

I just did this yesterday with a 14.4v 8.5amp wall wart i had and it is working perfectly for me. Without reading your other thread, I would wager the issue isn't the power source...
Good Luck!!!

Well, the issue is the software. The unit just won't go out of recovery mode.
However, because I needed to sit in the car while trying to fix it, I thought that having it inside the house would be a more convenient solution. Also, that way I could quickly switch between SD cards and also not drain the car battery. So the unit is turning on when it's connected to the car, but not at home.
Is there by any chance another connector, that would prevent it from turning on?

New TF out of the box, charged (apparently), and it will not "turn on".
Note, this is a gift for my father, so my sister is in possession of the TF.
She charged it overnight and this morning, she pushed the power button ... nothing.
She went into a dark bathroom and could see the backlight on... nothing on the screen.
Went through the following:
1. Held power button down for 20 sec - nothing
2. Held volume down + power - nothing
Questions:
1. Is there supposed to be a light indicating that the TF is charging?
2. Is there a way to "reset" the TF?
3. Could the TF be in SLEEP?
4. The AC adapter ... is this 2 pieces? does the outlet portion separate from the cable portion?
5. Is this unit DOA?

Check that the 2 parts of the AC adapter are firmly pressed together. It sounds like it wasn`t charging.

She cannot separate the two parts. Is this supposed to separate easily?
Heard reports of damaged AC adapters. True?

Just tried to separate mine and couldn`t.There is a post about chargers but i`m afraid you will have to search for it. It was related to chargers not working i think (sorry i didn`t pay much attention as mine was fine)As far as i remember there are two different serial numbers for the charger. One was ok the other dodgy.
Sorry i can`t help more,
my tablet turns on as soon as I insert the charging cable... I don't need to press the power button
She tried a different USB charger, and no go. Still acted the same.
System did not boot...just a blank screen (visible in a dark room).
Sending it back to Amazon.
I have the same issue except that the backlight won't even turn on. Quite upsetting.
did you ever find a resolution?
Make sure you hold the power button for at least 8 seconds. If the battery is charged it should turn on. If it still doesnt you probably have a charging issue. (like a bad plugin trandformer). Try another power source. You can also hold down power and then plug in power cable and see if that wakes it up.

So I've made a bit of a discovery that leads me to think the unit is defective.
When I use the method you mention I hear a clicking sound which I think I've correctly identified as the tablet turning off. Once I hold the button 2 more seconds, Windows recognizes the tablet and has installed the proper drivers so the tablet is on at least at some low level.
The screen however remains black even in a dark room (no backlight visible). I have looked but I cannot seem to find an Asus tech support number for this tablet. Also because I can not get the screen to turn on I can not activate debug mode so I cannot get into ADB.
Try Nvflash, should fix any brick. If Nvflash doesn't work it's pretty much a DOA for sure.
Well someone on craigslist is selling an A500 for $80, the only issues with it is the screen intermittently does not respond to touch and it wont charge over 12%. Doing a quick google search both of these problems might be easily fixable. So my question is, is it worth the $80 and if any one has any suggestions to try to fix those two problems. Thanks.
EDIT: Upon talking to them they said the charger cable has to be held at an angle to charge, so that could just be the cable or possibly the jack. I guessing it still doesnt charge past 12%.
Might have talked him down to $50 now, which makes the deal a little sweater if I can fix it for nothing!
I went ahead and bought it and looked at it for awhile lastnight but havent figure out whats going on but these are the problems its having.
1. It will not charge, if you plug it in it says the battery is 12 percent, if you remove the power cable it turns off.
2. Touch screen unresponsive at lockscreen, tried a factory reset it just sits there on the screen that says android system in the top left corner and you can see the back/home/wifi/power icons at the bottom of the screen.
3. The power cable fits very loose in the jack, I popped it open, lifted the jack out from where it sits and plugged it back in. It works just fine until you wiggle the power cable inside of the jack, at that point the device will shut off and if you keep moving the cable you can hear what sounds like a possible short, but only if you wiggle the cable inside of the jack. Somewhere over on the left side of the device you can hear little pops or kind of sounds like paper being crumpled.
I feel like maybe all of the problems are releated to the power issue. I have yet to get another power cable but I think thats where I will start and go from there (Just because I feel like it should not be sooo loose inside of the jack). If any one else has any suggestions I would love to hear them!

A good universal charger is a good start. At least you rule that issue out.
Checking (visable) around the input jack will rule out anything else.
As far as 12%, I would say, EC PWR control. It's quite possible he fubarred the pwr ctrl with some really bad flashes. It happens. This would explain the unresponsivness at the screen.
A good flashing with a stock 3.0x rom might shake some life into it. Might have to do it a few times. Or even a 3.1 or 2x rom.

Ill try flashing it once I get home, it doesnt have CWM or anything on it so I am assuming I can do that through the stock recovery? and would this ICS one fix my problems? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624908
And there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with the jack, but I don't get how the power cable would be too small for it. Its really loose, you barely move and it just slide out.
EDIT: Well you were right I follow this How to unbrick your tablet!!!!!!!!!!!!! - xda-developers got everything working fine except the power cable having to sit at the right angle to charge, but it did charge past 12%, now im off to get a new cable.

Great! You got a bargain of a tablet! Just needed a full rom flash with EC.
As with the charging port, I've heard of some others with the same issue, but be advised, you could break it for good if you go messing with it too much. I would guess the "prong" that sticks out a little on the side of the jack, got flattened in somehow. (I have a TV that mother in law did the same thing to). Now the jack has to be taped to the side to get proper contact.
THEN AGAIN if you have a soldering iron you could remove the port , find another at radio shack ,and re insert>solder the new port and now you have a new tablet for 50 bucks ,I had to do that for my Windows Phone 7 Samsung Focus phone , never had a problem since (that was for a usb port, the power port shouldnt be any different)

Ill have to see if I can find the same port and just remove the wiring from it. If not I found the whole part for $25 online.

It seems there are already several threads about this seemingly common issue with this tablet, but I've tried the normal checks and still can't get any life out of my dad's nexus 7 whatsoever.
I've found several threads stating it's just a loose battery, but in this case it isn't. I've checked absolutely every single connection I can get to without removing the void if removed bits, and can't find anything suspect. However it still won't turn on, won't charge, etc. It's not a faulty charger or cable either, we've all got android in my immediate family and we can't get any life out of it with any lead or charger. It was simply working one day, it was turned off the way it always is once my dad had finished using it, and now it simply won't come back on again.
I also saw some people say to get it into bootloader mode by holding volume down and power straight after plugging it in, but that too does nothing whatsoever?
Does anyone know of anything else I can try, short of sending it back to Asus?
How long have you had it?
This sounds like something that should be addressed as a warranty situation, as anything else may be kludgy at best, and may fail again just after your warranty runs out.
I wouldn't really waste any more time.
JMnsHO....
My dad has had it about half a year, maybe a little more. But he bought it from Comet, who no longer exist since they went under just after Christmas, so he can't return it to them now. Unless it'd just go straight to Asus instead.
I had exactly the same issue.......I fixed it by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting which by the sound of your post you have already tried.......you should be able to go straight to Asus for repair.......good luck....
Sent from my Evo 3D GSM using xda app-developers app
After probably 30 days it would need to go back to ASUS anyway.
As I'd said, I wouldn't waste more time fussing with it.
They'll take care of it and still preserve the balance of the warranty.
If you messed with it too much, you may find yourself with none at all, and on the hook for the cost of the repair.
Make the call..
Well I've not done anything that shows I've been in there like I say, so any manufacturer warranty should still be intact. Same goes for the software too, not rooted, on the standard rom and kernel, etc.
I was just hoping I could fix it for my dad without having to send it off.
Not yet, but anything else would be more 'intrusive'.
How long have you been working on it?
Not long, only 10 minutes here or there to see if I could find something loose. I might check the voltage of it's battery to see if it's flat, and also check to see if any power is getting to the battery while charging. That'll help prove if the battery or it's control board is dead or not.
Just checked the battery over. It's a 3.7v battery according to the label, and my multimeter shows 3.7v, so the battery is fine with no loose connections. At the connector for the power button ribbon cable, I get the 1.8v that should trigger the tablet to power up when the power button is pressed, and the power button is good too, only showing continuity when pressed. Again, no loose connections. But the bloody thing still won't turn on.
Any more ideas?

Yes, your thread is about a faulty or loose battery. As I've said, it's not a loose connection and I've now tested the battery too. Unless you can think of something that I've missed?

That sticky has all of the well-researched methods of addressing the collection of related issues (won't turn on/won't turn off/battery status). It is not only about a faulty or loose battery - there's much more.
Give it a read and let me know if there's a fix in there for you.

I have read it all, and unfortunately there's nothing in it for me.
If your able to get to bootloader maybe try to power off then let it charge for awhile then boot, or hold the power button for a good min
It won't turn on at all, so it can't get into the bootloader. Tried already.

I know you tried almost everything in the box, but when you plug it in the wall and press and hold the power button do you see the screen light up but still black?
If yes ( hopefully ) then continue holding power button then press VOL down til arrow pointing with START appears. Cycle through with VOL down til you see power off and select.
After it shuts down unplug from wall and replug and let it sit for a long awhile
If this didn't help at all sorry......good luck....warranty?

Nothing happens whatsoever mate, even while plugged into the charger. Tried the original charger, my s4 charger, my old HTC chargers, from the pc via USB, etc. None of them make any difference.
Got a feeling it might be the motherboard, as it has power. Can't be the display since I've tried getting a logcat from it after holding the power button for a while to make sure it would have turned on. ADB just kept saying "waiting for device" as if it wasn't plugged in, confirming it isn't even turning on.

Can the pogo pins be used to charge? bit of a long shot and you`d need to buy/borrow a dock of some sort. Definitely sounds like a hardware failure issue.

Need to factory reset one of my old head units to move on to someone else. Issue is I have since sold the car that it was fitted to so don't have a way of powering the unit that I know of.
Has anyone got any idea on a quick way to power a head unit without the use of a car? I.e. if I can create a quick Ghetto power supply to power the unit on with at home so I can perform the reset on the device.

i am going to try this
Today I was using my phone when it locked up, made a strange buzzing noise and then went dead.
It was on charge at the time but now if I plug in the charger I do not get the usual charging display and the phone won't switch on regardless of how long I hold down the power button with or without the volume +/- buttons.
If I connect it to my computer 'adb devices' doesn't find it either and that was working recently.
Is it time for a new phone or is there some other way of reviving it?

Sounds like you need a new battery.
Yeah battery or a power related issue. Easy to fix if you know your way around these things they have videos explaining how to do the battery and stuff. But if you take it to a phone repair shop they should be able to fix it and not very expensively either

Of course. Could of been something in the connector or ribbon. Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't.
