I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. Where can I buy a legit screen replacement?
Not much out there that I can find that looks legit. Best bet is probably this

This seems to be the cost of the screen if I were to repair it through OP. I'd rather just fix it myself tbh.

Yes that's exactly what it is, I would rather do the repair my self as well if I were in your shoes but for the time being it doesn't appear that there are any legitimate replacement screens out.

It's also out of stock. Doesn't do much good unfortunately
This just happened to me this past weekend (6ft fall face first) Was looking for 3rd party replacements on eBay, AliExpress, etc. priced at $140 - $170. Heard from a buddy that oneplus does repairs so I contacted support and summited a RMA for a screen/digitizer replacement and was quoted $90.34 plus tax, shipping and labor.
I personally think this is a better deal compared to replacing it myself since they're using OEM parts. Or am I missing something? [emoji848]

I had no luck finding a reputable supplier so OEM is really the only option, and the prices are not bad. Hopefully the turn around is fast though for you if you go that route.

$90.73 is cheap. Just probably gonna be without your phone for a while .. just send it to them next day mail. Seems like a good price.
For me personally, sending it back to OP is the best option. I'd figure $90 + shipping + labor (hopefully it's like 20%) plus it won't void the warranty if I'd did it myself. I'll update the final price and how long the turn around is after I get the my phone back.
Wow that sucks, I feel bad for you, If your phone is still under warrenty, maybe they'll repair it for free.
Free repair for user initiated cracked screen... Funny. That would be nice

It might be $60+ for the labor though... I would assume it would be a 1 hour charge.... would be neat to see an actual receipt posted here.. Would be even neater if they just sold replacement parts on their website (now THAT would be revolutionary for a phone company)

For a low $24.95 a month we will replace your cracked screen for FREE no matter what you do with it!
Square trade warranty is $9 per month and no copay for repairs including broken screen if you send in the phone or take it to local repairs authorized by them. $25 copay for in home repair.

I would never bring a phone to a repair place. I've done it before to have a screen replaced they put in a very clearly cheap Chinese knockoff screen in. It looked like crap and just off. A couple months later same phone fell off my bed about 2 feet onto carpet and the new screen cracked.
I did some further reading and see that there's actually a $149 deductible/copay for all repairs before the warranty kicks in, and the $25 for in home repairs is on top of that. OK, warranty probably not worth it statistically.
please let us know as soon as you get it back. thank you.

Mine is the T-mobile version, and I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. AFAIK, that voids whe warranty. :/
I don't mind paying for a replacement, but idk how much labor will cost. Worried it would be a lot though.

AFAIK the screen replacement is considered an out of warranty repair. At least that's what I was told over the phone with support.
Just sent mines out today with the label they sent me (next day air). Wasted 2 days waiting for the label and called and they told me to check my spam folder and there it was [emoji1787]. They told me it should be a 3-7 day turnaround (pending inspection and payment).
I'll post the cost/invoice once I receive it.

that sad do you have serial number? in slovakia, police can track phone on base of serial number even if SIM card is changed... can you do something similar in UK?

Gutted indeed. Doesn't microsoft myphone have a tracking facility on it?
If you have household insurance you could claim it on that, i have my phone insured on my business insurance.
Good luck amigo
Of course there aren't any insurance policies that will cover an already lost/stolen phone...if only it were so
If you have home/holiday/credit card insurance you can sometime be covered under such a policy.
If your going to claim it on insurance though, just be careful on exactly how you word your claim. Insurance companies are very...sneaky when it comes to insuring phones. A word, a phrase or a situation out of place would result in £/$/€0. For example if you say you lost it in a pub your pretty much not getting a penny from them. Read the fine print on an insurance form to be sure what, when, where and how your phone would be covered.
I was wondering if maybe i could take out an insurance policy then maybe make a claim in a couple of days? Anyone ever tried something like this??
So gutted

Plenty of people who now have a criminal record have yes
Insurance policies normally have a clause that states you can't claim for x time (mine is 2 weeks for instance) after taking out a policy or changing the phone you want covered. There's also a whole bunch of conditions about timeframes for informing you network provider to block the sim etc.
Really your choice is:
1) learn the lesson, report it to O2 so they can block your sim and issue you with a new one, fork out for a new (sim-free) phone and get it insured this time. Cost: £500 + price of insurance
2) take out insurance now, wait for the required time before you can claim to elapse, submit a fraudulent claim, risk have it turned down and risk someone running a huuuuuuuuuuuge bill on your sim for which you'd be 100% liable. Cost: lots of trouble (for fraud), whatever £££ has been charged to your sim, and most likely having to buy a new phone anyway.
Have you tried calling your number at all (maybe some kind soul has found it)
Points taken, wish i could afford to but another one but unfortunately there is no chance of this. Looks like i'm going to be joing the ranks of non-HD2 owners
Back to my K800i then
Personally I would go back to O2, tell them the phone is lost or stolen, block the sim and imei, then see if there is any way they can help you out.
Better to be upfront and honest and maybe get something rather than dishonest and risk massive problems for yourself. later on.
At worst you will get a replacement sim to use in another phone. You could also try buying yourself out of the contract.
Start by talking to them first to assess your options.
Good luck.

That's hardly a bargin is it!! That's about £60 a year for a £500 phone?!
10% of your device cost on insurance. Why not just add it to your home contents insurance, should be cheaper.
might be cheaper on home insurance but might be more on excess if you need to make a claim, o2 only charge £25 excess
Bugger, really sympathise with you mate. The trouble is that insurance really adds to your monthly bill that it doesnt seem worth taking, until something like this happens.

Make sure you drop that guy a drink or something for Christmas. It's nice to hear of honesty in this world.
So I'm getting out of my car yesterday, and my phone was in my case attached to my belt. However, the magnetic flap the prevents the phone from sliding out apparently didn't make good contact and the phone slid out of its case and landed right on a corner and turned the screen digitizer into a spider web of broken glass.

I don't want to go through my insurance for several reasons. Therefore, I went on eBay and ordered a new digitizer for about $34 shipped with Priority Mail. However, I'd also like to replace the actual plastic case that holds the phone together, as it has some broken clips and the phone looks like it wants to come apart. However, I can't find anyone selling it. There are some video tutorials on Youtube and it seems like an easy enough process, I just can't seem to find the part.
Does anyone know where I can purchase an OEM exterior case for this phone?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Resolved and I double-posted the thread like a moron.
Mods: My apologies. Feel free to delete.
Doesn't Sprint have some new repair policy where for a flat fee ($35) you can bring your phone in (even out of warranty) and they'll repair it?
Someone chime in if they know.....

I might hurry too seeing as there is interest in it. When I mentioned it a while ago when I had them, no one was interested
Go to global direct parts you can get oem cases and parts there for good prices. I think an oem case in there is 30 dollars or so.
Edit: I just went there in my Evo. It's $37.80.

Well, I double-posted this thread trying to edit the subject line to add "resolved" to it. My other thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12141063#post12141063
On this thread, I added a link I found to a US seller on eBay. I got the housing for $25 shipped, and it brings the adhesive already. All you have to do it peel the tape and place the new digitizer in place.
Digitizer = $35 shipped
Housing = $25 shipped
Total cost= $60
Yea, I could have paid $40 more and had Asurion send me a refurb, but then I'd have to start over from scratch and then if I have one more claim within a year, they kick me out and I have no more insurance. I'd rather save my claims for when I do something really stupid and completely break my phone or flat out lose it (knock on wood).
In the meantime, it really sucks because I feel like I'm going to cut my finger on the screen. Works flawlessly, though.......incredibly enough.
Edit: The $35 Sprint deal was a no go. I was told by the in-store rep of the repair center I went to that they are not allowed to even touch the phone because there are obvious signs of physical damage. Even then, the $35 charge was for people who did NOT have insurance on their phones. I asked if I changed the digitizer myself, could I then bring the phone back in to replace the case for cosmetic issues and pay the $35 and was told yes. However, I do not think she knew what she was talking about and I called a different repair center where I was told they couldn't do a damn thing for me. That's when I went ahead and ordered the parts myself.
This just happened to a co-worker of mine and a Sprint repair center here in Kansas City replaced his screen for him. It was covered under his insurance with no deductible. Surprised the hell out of him.

Well, your friend is a very lucky guy. Even when Sprint was doing this a short while ago, there was a $35 fee associated with it. Your buddy's luck was as good getting the problem fixed as it was bad when the phone broke to begin with. lol
crap, I never bought insurance. So they don't do the 35 dollar thing anymore? That was very appealing which is why I waived insurance on my girlfriends evo.

Same happened to me less than 2 months ago. My heart stopped when my Evo slapped the hard tiled floor. One repair center told me to go online (Asurion) and file the claim. Instead I went home & went to a different repair center the next morning. They replaced the screen & didn't charge me a dime.
The $35 repair fee does cover exchanges or repairs without insurance. However, the policy was slightly modified as of Feb 1st. Any LCD/lens/digitizer with multiple cracks or a single crack longer than 1 inch is considered damaged beyond repair (DBR). An insurance claim would have to be filed. If the digitizer simply stops functioning, it can still be replaced under insurance or the $35 repair fee.
For those that would want to do the repair themselves, be warned. There are two different types of Evo screens. One made by Sharp and one made by AUO. They are not interchangeable.
Update:
The process did not go well. It was actually very easy, IMO, but it turns out that the LCD cracked along with the digitizer when the phone fell. Therefore, it broke even more during the process of removing it from the digitizer and became useless. However, I feel that if the LCD would not have been damaged during the initial fall, that I would have been able to do it.
With that said, I called Asurion for a replacement and the Evo is back ordered so I have to wait 7-10 days for them to send me another phone. In the meantime, I have been reduced to this:
Good times!

ouch...if you have no warranty with o2, maybe you got some with your bank account?? anways if your not insured, you will most likely have to pair to get the screen replaced...good luck mate!
If you have full accidental damage cover on your home contents insurance you will be covered (assuming this happened at home, if it didn't you also need personal belongings cover away from home). Of course you'll loose your no claims bonus and have to pay the excess. All depends how much it costs to repair.
Good luck

Your first month free insurance should definitely cover it mate. I would read the contents of the insurance before going through with it though to check if it covers accidental damage.
If it doesn't, then pick a street or an alleyway on a map where there's hardly any cameras and make a story about your phone being stolen by thugs, and make sure you plan your story well, they're likely to ask what you were doing there, give false identities (the common ones; a guy covered in scarf and a hood) get a reference/case number from the police and report it to O2. Your probably going to have to pay an excess of £30, but still well worth it mate.
Good luck.

That really sucks to see. Did you have a case on it? I have a cheap rubber one on but am not sure if it could take a fall like that either. Some of the hard cases seem like they would add weight and not provide any cushion effect either. So was curious to see if it was unprotected or had a case on. Either way though, I am sorry to see that cracked screen
i used a cheap gel case. =S in theory a soft object should absorb the impact right... but i guess it didn't......
I've dropped the phone 3 times already, and it's still good as new thanks to a zenus carbon case
Wow sorry dude, mines has been dropped a few times cus I give it to my nephew to play with and hes not even 2 so he throws it around a little bit no scratches on the screen just a few on the back, but if you got your phone through o2 call centre they replace the phone for any problems within the first 6 months so you can just call them up and tell them that theres a problem with the screen without mentioning the crack or drop. they'll ask you to send it back and they'll send you a new one or they'll even send a courier to make the switch and they never follow up on the damaged handset, I done this when I took out an xperia on o2 I got the handset replaced like 7 times but it won't work if you got it from a o2 store.

Hi
After owning this awesome phone for only 3 weeks, I dropped it from about half a meter distance and got a bad crack in the upper-right corner. Both the screen and the touch works fine, including in the broken area.
I've talked to the people where I bought the phone and they said a repair would be $300! The reason is that the only repair they can offer is a full replacement of the front, glass, AMOLED and touch! :/
So the question is: Is this the only repair possible? It seems overkill to replace the AMOLED and touch when it's only the glass that is broken and the pixels underneath are working just fine. I've found some products that seems to be what I'm looking for. For instance search ebay for Outer-LCD-Screen-Lens-Top-Glass-Replace-Samsung-Galaxy-S3 (I can't post the link since my account was just created).
But this type of repair doesn't seems to be offered 'officially'. Also, I haven't been able to find a video discussing replacing just the glass (they are always about the full display)... or indeed I haven't found one success story in a forum.
So is possible to replace just the glass by buying one of these and maybe take it to a repair shop to get help? Have any of you tried it? Thanks!
i don't know man but the screen is too them expensive. check ebay or amazon

I wouldn't even consider doing this even though a friend offered to have a friend of his replace my display after I dropped and cracked the screen on my phone. I can't say if he was going to replace all layers, but the offer of repair was made. Anyway if this phone wasn't so new, it might be possible to buy some phone that had its insides fried and just replace your with that one. Don't know if that can really be done, just sayin'. Contact the guys at MobilTechVideos and ask them. I read somewhere that they repair screens. Good luck!:good:
you cant replace just the outer glass. it is glued to the amoled screen and you will ruin both by trying to do so. thats why the repair is so much. just buy insurance on it, wiat 30 days and get it replaced
While it does seem extremely overkill, it is the only way to replace the glass screen. To be able to remove it, you have to go through the back of the phone and then take out the glass panel which is also attached to the AMOLED and digitizer. Then they'd have to order all those parts and put them in.
So yeah, you aren't getting scammed or anything since they really do need those parts. I'm guessing the parts would add up to around $200 so if you're comfortable doing it yourself, you could save quite a bit of money.
When the phone is fixed, I highly recommend purchasing insurance. I'd suggest using bestbuy's insurance if you purchased the phone from them. They offer $10 a month which is reasonable compared to $11 TEP for most US carriers. It covers everything with no deductible or limit to replacements.
If you did not purchase the phone from a bestbuy, I'd go with asurion. I'm not sure about asurion's prices but I believe they're cheap with no deductible. The only downside is you can only have 3 replacements per year.

I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone, but Asurion through Verizon is $7 a month with a $99 deductible and a 2 claim limit per year.

Ah, I wasn't aware. $99 deductible still isn't too bad and $7 is pretty cheap so I'd recommend that to OP.

But I've read multiple threads on users having the same inquiry about replacing just the glass screen on SAMOLED screens and the results are somewhat mixed.
The majority claims it can't be done because of the screens being 'fused' together, which is true. But a small handful of members claim, from personal experience, it is possible though extremely hard. They claim using a hair dryer or heating gun to loosen the screens, you have to be VERY, VERY careful when separating the top layer because the LCD can become very easily damaged beyond repair.
So you've got 3 choices really:
1. Accept the crack, learn your lesson and move on.
2. Have a shop repair the entire LCD for you or do it yourself.
3. Attempt to replace the glass and hope you don't end up destroying the entire screen.. which is a very high possibility.
If you choose step 3, there's a thread on here with a step by step on 'dissecting' the screen process. I'm on my phone right now so I don't have the link but it's a thread for an owner of an HTC device, I believe. If I get a chance I'll swing back around with that link plus a few other interesting finds of mine while researching the same subject.
Good luck!

a 2 year extended warranty for android phones costs ~ $124 and a $99 deductible.
(remember every tuesday they offer 20% off coupons..... check slickdeals.net)
that works out to about $5.16 a month w/o coupon
with AT&T's insurance, you are paying $7 a month, AND a $200 deductible.
both insurances cover the Accidental & Liquid damage.
i think the winner is clear. (no i don't work for squaretrade)

left it on top of the car and drove off, got ran over by a dump truck, had insurance, still sucked though
I mean I just dropped it from 2 feet onto carpet, not sure what happened JK
Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I dropped it on a wooden surface. So I would say it was a semi-hard drop. Still I've never broken a screen before and I've had a phone since 1998 including 4 smart phones. Based on other postings I think this phone is more fragile than others.
However I could accept that - but I think it's stupid of Samsung to create a phone where you can only replace a cheap and fragile part by replacing a much more expensive part. That makes no sense at all!
I'm in Denmark and the concept of insurance for something like this is not widespread... I think a few carriers offer it.
Given it's not that big an area and it doesn't affect the camera I think I will leave it as is for now. Not because I don't want to pay for the repair but honestly I'm afraid I could break the screen quickly again. So in that case I would rather safe the repair for when it's really broken! Also, maybe "glass only" type of repairs will become available in repair shops if this turns out to be a more common problem with the S3.
Thanks.

Rofl is all that I can say here about that dump truck. What about these don't for a minute think that they cost as much as they are trying to sell them for. Remember that these phones really cost between 65-100 for the whole phone

Hey guys,
I ordered an S4 off of ebay, it arrived cracked. All of the pictures were clear and the seller never mentioned a cracked in the screen. I just emailed the seller about the issue. I paid $489 for it and other than the crack, the phone is fine. I do have insurance, would At&t cover this device? I'm thinking about getting my money back or seeing if the seller will pay for the repair.
The listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-S-4-SGH-I337-Latest-Model-16GB-Black-Mist-AT-T-Smartphone-/271230170894?ssPageName=ADME%3AX%3AAAQ%3AUS%3A1123&nma=true&si=WXn7jd0U%252F2MaNo7nAkTOGCbo2Bc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
These pictures were taken by me. I didn't see the crack before but it's obvious now. What should I do? Tia.
why would att cover it? you didnt buy it from them; go after the seller or shipper (assuming it was insured during shipping), although technically seller states slight use/return and FULLY FUNCTIONAL, so technically go after the seller, full refund or replacement, shipping included. Paypal/eBay will help out there.

Even when you file a issue with paypal the seller wouldn't be responsible for return shipping value, and would only need to reimburse you for the phone itself while you have to shell out the return shipping fee unless they for whatever reason offer to pay for it. If they knew about it and shipped it cracked like a **** then you are out of luck and it would then be up to you to either get it fixed (as ATT won't fix it even if you had insurance on another phone as it isn't this one) or ship it back and pay the shipping while filing a paypal resolution case. Perhaps just perhaps it was damaged during shipping, but hopefully there was insurance taken out on it suitable enough to replace the damaged screen.

Shipping was free on the item and now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing anything about insuring it. And I definitely didn't think to look into it. That's completely my fault for failing to check. I did see a nick (that was okay with me) on the bezel but not the crack. It seems like it's just the glass and thankfully not the digitizer. I'm not sure that a crack is a cosmetic issue by eBay's policy and the seller didn't list it as an imperfection. Does anyone see the crack in the seller's pictures in the listing? I feel like an idiot right now. It was shipped wrapped in one plastic bag with a more bags and newspapers on top. Not the best for preventing accidents during shipping. I normally use bubble wrap when sending phones.

The crack is not mentioned. The device was advertised as cosmetic wear, not damaged. The seller should be responsible for it until you take possession. You should have immediately filed a claim with shipper or make sure the seller does it. You need to show it was cracked when you opened the box.

I just looked at it again. Is it a crack or a scratch? I see what looks like a scratch and this could be considered normal wear.

I emailed the seller right after opening it, as eBay suggested. I didn't open the box at the post office as I had other errands to do before going home. I picked it up right before they closed after getting off of work. It looks like a light crack in the glass. If I turn the device slightly, light reflects back from that line. I will try to take a better picture.

blow up the only picture he has of the phone with the screen off, you can actually see the crack. HOWEVER, if it doesn't list the crack you likely have a case for a refund due to damage unless it specifically says no returns and as is, which it doesn't. So you should be able to file a claim in a couple days if they haven't responded.
Ok. I see it now. It is in your pic and the original on eBay. But still a crack is not a scratch and seller should have mentioned it. I believe you are entitled to a refund as you were misled. I would contact ebay right away if you don't hear back from seller.
Thanks Phil. I'm glad that you can confirm the crack. I can't really see it that well in the listing only a slight line. But it's really clear in the one I posted with the black background.
Thanks alphadog00. I will be filing a claim tomorrow depending on what the seller has to say.

again, that falls under seller responsibility, or shipping carrier. because seller provided shipping, and condition was guaranteed as a function of the sale, you will have no issues on a legal basis regarding return/refund/replacement in a legal sense. keep a copy of the ebay page, all receipt emails, and all correspondence with the seller, and snag a copy of ebay sales policy as well as any pages related to shipping, condition, etc from the sellers 'home' page.
my GF is an attorney; shes saved my hide dozens of times; you have this one in the bag.

Looks like I will be getting my money back. The seller finally replied and attached unclear pictures. I will file a claim through eBay to insure I get a refund. Is there anything else I need to do?
The seller's message:
There was no crack when I wrapped and sent it to you. Actuallt there was not even the smudge on the phone. It could be that it cracked by delivery people. If you don't want it please sent it back. Before I mailed you this phone I took tons of pictures exactly for his kind of claim. NO CRACK. Please sent it back....see pictures

Why would he take it back if he thinks the crack happened during shipping. That sounds fishy. I'd get my money before sending it if possible.

That's what I was thinking. I'm going to contact eBay during lunch. I definitely will not be sending it back without getting my money.
Update: I opened a case through eBay. I want to be sure that the process flows correctly. That way both parties are covered. I'm hoping that eBay contacts me soon. I'm not comfortable with sending the item back first. I'd like to know I have my money back....
