My Amazon Fire Tablet 7" 16GB which is only two years old. The Tablet works really well. However, it keeps switching off. There is no consistency to this. Sometimes, I am using the device and it goes off. Other times, I leave it on and it switches off. It's driving me mad. Amazon were not at all helpful. I have done a factory reset already. Does anyone have a solution for this problem? Thanks.

Likely a hardware problem - failing battery or loose battery connection. Little you can do unless willing to crack open the case (search YouTube for video guidance). Replacement batteries are rarely authentic even when touted as new/original; approach with skepticism. Loose connections (or main board with a micro fizzure) are tough to track down unless obvious.
These inexpensive Amazon gizmos are pretty much a throw-away when they start acting up. Sorry for the bad news.

Can you open your fire tablet to measure the voltage
Requirements:
Amazon Fire tablet
A repairing toolkit for mobile
Multimeter (use for voltmeter)
1. Open your Fire tablet
2. Prepare the multimeter to mean the battery voltage
3. Connect the probe to battery socket to pin 1-2 positive, 5-6 negative
Pin 1-2 red
Pin 3-4 white
Pin 5-6 black
4. The voltage is higher to 3.8v or lower to 3.4, replace the battery with new battery

My FOTA update keeps failing to install.
You have to fully return your device to stock (not just unroot). Use NVflash to do this. Then go to the asus ftp server and download any update file. Update your device using that file and this should allow your device to update FOTA properly.
Get a tingling sensation when plugging in a charger?
Flip the charger over and plug it into the wall so that the S in asus is on the side with the fat slot on the plug to fix. Seems to be a faulty adapter issue.
My screen isn't displaying anything:
Make sure none of the side buttons are stuck. Press them and make sure they 'click' ok. Force power off your device (10-12 second hold of power button, then release). Wait for about 30 secs. Then power it on normally (6sec power button hold and release). If your screen worked, then stopped, try discharging the battery to 0%. Then re-charging it. This has seemed to clear screen responsiveness for lots of people.
My dock battery is dead and it won't start to re-charge:

My speaker volume is stuck at a certain level:
Force power off your device (10-12 second hold of power button, then release). Then wait for about 30 secs. Then power it on normally (6sec power button hold and release).
My device/dock battery isn't charging OR my device/dock battery isn't holding a charge:
Make sure the charger is 100% clipped together properly. It's a very tight fit and may need slight force to snap together. Also make sure you have inserted the usb cable the right way up in your adapter. Sometimes unclipping, and re-attaching the adapter parts fixes problems (some come pre-assembled already so this may not be your issue). If your dock battery indicator doesn't ever go green after about 8hrs of charging (not for the first charge) then it may need RMA'ing. A normal charge of the tablet itself, from empty to full, should take about 3hrs maximum (not for the first charge).
My battery is draining very quickly:
Some apps run fine in the background, but there are others that may be 'keeping alive' certain functions, such as gps, sensors, etc. In order to get around this you can use free task killing apps from the market. It's recommended to be selective about which apps you choose to auto-kill. Don't just put them all on auto-kill (unless you are using a 'safe' option in the app) or your system may become unstable. If you have wifi on when you put the tablet in standby, it stays connected. If you then leave the network coverage area, the tablet will continually search for any network around it, draining the battery further. So when leaving home, remember to switch it off. Another possible cause of major battery drain is a badly coded/incompatible app. Get a battery monitoring app from the market and keep a close eye on the logs it produces. Don't watch every little blip/spike in the readings, try to take an average reading, over a few hours/days to get a better idea of what's happening.
Why isn't my device charging when I plug it into my pc?
It will only charge when the display of the device is off. And it is extremely slow and will only trickle charge. There are ways to boost power to your usb port, but the risks far outweigh any benefits.

Update to the latest firmware. Set your router/modem to a specific channel (set it to 1-11, NOT channel 12 or 13). Failing that, it's probably time to buy a newer wireless N router/modem (the TF does not support 5ghz, only 2.4ghz).
One of my speakers stays on even when nothing is playing from it:
Put your device into standby mode for 5+ seconds. Then turn on again.
My charging cable is too short:
Some 3rd party USB 3.0 male to female extension cables work to extend the length. This seems to be the luck of the draw if it works for you or not.
I get horrible movie recording framerate issues:

My microsd card isnt working:
Make sure it is formatted to fat32. Make sure it's securely fixed into the slot. It has to be pushed in quite a way. Use a long fingernail or the edge of a credit card. Make sure it clicks and holds in the slot. It should be flush to the side of the device.

Return and replace for a new unit by RMA'ing your device.
My MKV video playback is jerky/unwatchable/not working:
Make sure it's a low profile encoded file.

Perhaps you have put it into APX/nvflash mode by mistake (which doesn't display anything onscreen). Force power off your device (10-12 second hold of power button, then release). Then wait for about 30 secs. Then power it on normally (2sec power button hold and release). If still nothing you might have to RMA it for a replacement.
I can't install any apps from the market:
If you are in an unsupported country you can try THIS. If you're not and still can't install, sometimes google does maintenance that affects certain accounts. Try it again at a later time/date.
My onscreen keyboard is laggy:
Change the keyboard from the default Asus keyboard for the stock honeycomb one. Turn off text prediction. If still laggy you have a conflicting app. If fixed then find another keyboard app that you like.
When I plug my device into my pc I cant transfer any files:
Make sure the device's screen is on, and that the lockscreen is not showing.

There is inbuilt code to stop your device from charging above a certain point to prolong the battery life.

My SDXC card isn't working:
Format it as NTFS, if you are using files over 4gb on it or the card wont work properly. An alternative method is to format the card as Fat32 filesystem (if you are going to be only storing files under 4gb in size), but you will need to partition it into 32gb sections if you use this formatting system, for the full capacity to be usable.

You can modify that behavior in the wifi settings. Take a look at the sleep settngs.
I have not seen this mentioned so it probably is not too common a problem but my wifi was initially invisible to my transformer. Switching the channel from 13 or maybe 14 to something lower fixed the issue.

Yes, and I want to stress: wifi performance on standby is problematic and needs a fix. On the Xoom, wifi can be kept on when the screen turns off and standby performance is in the <.5%/hour battery use range. The Asus needs to have wifi set to turn off when the screen is off to achieve this kind of performance (otherwise, it burns about 3%/hour).
I'm hoping Asus is aware of this issue and will fix it soon in a firmware update.

Touch screen stopped responding to touch
Brand new unit after about an hours use the touchscreen stopped responding to touch. It did this on Friday, May 13th, between Noon and 5pm eastern DST. The unit was working when shut of and was in a safe spot. I went to turn it on and no touchscreen. I noted the time as I think there may have been an OTA update then but I never saw anything on screen.
No monkey business, rooting, tinkering etc. Just learning about unit.
I have wiped the memory and cold booted several times, no change. I note that after a forced off the unit turns back on by its self. I saw earlier when I started the browser for the first time, the right 25% of the screen was over bright then went dark. Exiting browser, screen returned to normal and never saw this behavior again.
Screen may be somewhat dim now but cannot get past setup screen as only power key is responded to.
Already asked B&H for RMA but any magic gratefully accepted.

Unfortunately it sounds like a clear case of a faulty unit. Don't know of anything that can help in that situation im afraid. Not what you'd want to hear of course, but at least it should be a simple exchange for a new one.

Good point, I'm not sure. I assuming that no matter what, the led on the keyboard dock would show just it's own charge.
Will have to monitor it for a bit and get back to you.
Hopefully later once Asus release another update, it will contain the dock battery vs. tablet battery (that got taken out from the .12 beta build) for us to monitor both.

Transformer won't Charge
I received my eee pad transformer from hh gregg yesterday. When I opened the box I noticed that there was a scratch that appeared to be under the the screen. The scratch is very long, but also very fine and you can only see it when the screen is dark and you hold it up to the light. So I figured what the heck, not that big of a deal. However, when I went to charge the transformer, I cannot get it to charge. No light, no nothing. I've tried everything. Plugging it up to the computer, plugging into the wall, taking apart and putting back together, still nothing. I'm trying to figure out what to do. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Asus said I can send to them and they will look at it or I can send it back to the store, however, the store does not have anymore of the transformers in stock.

If you are taking apart and putting back together the wall charger then you likely haven't put it together properly yet; it will not come apart easily at all if it is fully together.
Try pushing harder than you think you should until the pronged portion is snapped in to place and you cannot easily remove it again. If it doesn't snap down, the contacts on the back side don't line up and it won't charge.

[Q] Touch and charger.

Hey guys,
A friend of mine recently bought this tablet and everything was running very very smooth, until he received the OTA to 3.1 . Besides the wifi bug ( very easy to get rid of ), he is now experiencing a really really weird touch lag. Let me explain: as soon as he plugs the tablet in the charger the touch gets really unresponsive forcing him to slide/touch several times before the tablet detects the input even if the system keeps working as it should, ie no slowdowns etc.
Funny things is this bug only shows up (for now) when he plugs the charger in university while not happening at home.
Has anyone experienced the same? Im starting to think that the charger plug has a defect and is in some way affecting the touch system ( electric\magnetic stuff ) leading this to an hardware related problem, but I want to be sure so maybe we will try to flash something (Are there Acer tools to flash full stock roms?). Tablet is running original rom and recovery, I just messed with the wpa_supplicant files but I dont see how this could be related.

When my screen is off and I turn it back on when I switch from charger to battery I get laggie for a minute. Same on my notebook and my cell.I believe its to do with changing some power profiles/settings. If you recover in a minute or so its prob fine. If not watch running apps. If you see something running all the time.use a freeze program to trouble shoot if its a rouge app.

I live in indiana.
When you plug your charger in the fram becomes hot. 110 volts to earth. Just check it, can't be good.

More details - please. "110 volts to earth"? Not making much sense.
My guess, and its just a guess, is that his charger is somewhat faulty and not regulating the power correctly. Ask him if he plugs straight to the wall at university and into a power strip/surge protector at home. If he is, then I would imagine that the power strip is regulating the voltage enough to let the charger work, where the wall outlet is making the charger fail. I'd try a new charger if one is available and see if that fixes the issue...or take a surge protector with him to university and see if that also takes care of it. If he isn't using a power strip at either place, then we are back at square one.
Have you tried going back to an unmodded system to see if that works? (by that I mean remove/undo wpa supplicant).
I have no idea what that problem could be as it seems hardware based by just reading what you typed, but it could be software too which is called into question by the little mod you did.
What I find odd is that it works in one place and not another.
Does it happen when Wifi is off completely? (Just asking because I'm thinking if it has to do with the wifi mod you made, perhaps turning Wifi off and testing would show up something).
I'll just tell you what I would try in that situation.
1. Go back to a stock ROM, fully. No mods, no root, no hacks. Preferably one designed for your region. (We have no idea if any of the hardware in these units is different based on region, which is why I never recommend putting a ROM on the device unless it's 100% certified to be originated from a device purchased within that region).
2. Factory reset. (It doesn't fix everything, but it fixes most software glitches - especially when they're caused by outside sources like apps or settings mess ups).
If it still happens after that then you've at least ruled out all software suspects.
The frame of the a500 is hot. The charger is none polorized so makes no difference which way you plug it into the wall or extention plug is the same. Check your charger to earth and you will see line voltage no mater where it's pluged in, and don't have to be pluged into the a500. They need replaced. Just meter from the outside of the charger plug to ground and you will see the problem. Might not be on all chargers, but I would check mine.
Just check you charger plug to earth without the a500 pluged in, the problem is not in the unit or software just the charger.

I had an issue like this with a palm pre, and the only solution i could determine was that i was using an offbrand charger that wasn't supplying the right voltage/amperage and causing flakiness with the electrical charge on the screen. maybe the charger is damaged, or they're using an off-brand one?

Yeah I was thinking about reverting back to the stock system but unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the tablet scene not having one and since he is a little frustrated atm about his situation maybe flashing a recovery to flash a stock rom isnt really the way to go. Isn't Acer delivering any tool to flash a full rom just to try if that will solve the problem?

I found this thread, and this is exactly what's happening to my tablet. When it's plugged in, the screen becomes very unresponsive, and it's very annoying. I can't charge it and use it at the same time. It's not even like galaxy tab 10.1 or ipad 2 where the battery life lasts like 10 hours! I am extremely frustrated about this issue..Mine has this issue at home. I don't bring charger to school, so I don't know about that. I'm really surprised that only very few people actually have this issue..

I had a similar experience to all of this when I was recently travelling by airplane. There were charging outlets (US-style 2-prong) on the back of each seat and my tablet absolutely REFUSED to respond properly to touch when I plugged it in. At the airport, in the hotel, at home, and everywhere else I've used it, it worked properly.
My conclusion: touch screens on A500 are very sensitive to electrical problems. I suspect that an airplane's electrical system isn't as "standard" as everywhere else, and whatever the difference was (a grounding issue, or a voltage regulation issue, or whatever) caused the touchscreen to freeze.
My suggestion to the poster and others with "when I plug in the touch screen stops working": go to another location (i.e., a friend's house, work, school, a coffee shop, etc.), plug in and see if the same problem happens. If it does, it might be your charger, so try someone else's A500 charger at a bunch of locations and see if the the same problem occurs.
I would guess that most people with this problem (not the "when I plug it in it gets for a few seconds" problem, but the "touch screen doesn't work when plugged in" problem) will find a solution lies in their power source, not the A500 itself.

I have run into another problem related to touch screens - mine doesn't work on airplanes. I think that there is some sort of pressure differential issue - the screen works fine on the ground, but once I open the tablet when the plane is at altitude, the screen just stops working - it doesn't matter if the tablet is plugged in or not.
Annoying to say the least. Last night I pulled out my wireless mouse to use the tablet, and a stewardess noticed this and told me to put it away as wireless devices aren't allowed on airplanes.......
Any suggestions?

[Q] Horizontal lines on the screen

My nook is rooted. I nearly always use it plugged to the wall outlet to save battery live. I use it mainly to read pdf files using "OfficeSuite". When I start up my nook I activate to the app "Nook refresh" and "Smart Rotator"(to use my OfficeSuite in landscape mode).
Some days ago I installed a screen rotator app (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678431) and couldn't use it, so I uninstalled it. I do not know if this can have any relation with the problem that I am having with the screen.
Some days ago my Nook screen was perfect, no strange thing.
But one day I noticed a horizontal line (from the usual perspective, with the "nook" button below) that was dark/white (that is when the background is white, the line is black and viceversa). I did not give it much importance.
Another day, while I was reading a pdf file, appeared another horizontal line.
Today, while I was reading a pdf file, appeared another horizontal line.
That is 3 lines for now.
What could it be? Do you have any idea to solve this issue?

I would not recommend using the NST plugged in at all times - I think you will do better to let the battery cycle.
E-ink is attracted to and repelled from the screen by electrostatic charge, as I understand it. So if there's anything like a power surge or other mechanical issue affecting your unit while charging, possibly you could see an artifact in the display?

Why do you think that? I do it because a read that when the battery is fully charged, the light turns green and not continues charging the battery, so I suppose that direct energy is feeding the use of the device instead of charging my nook.
E-ink is attracted to and repelled from the screen by electrostatic charge, as I understand it. So if there's anything like a power surge or other mechanical issue affecting your unit while charging, possibly you could see an artifact in the display?
No, the only image that appears on the display when I power it on is a SD CARD image informing that there is a sd card.

I did this with the wall outlet disconnect several times, but it does not work. The lines are there.
They're probably permanent if after unplugging, powering off all the way, then powering on again they persist. If your device is still under warranty, I'd suggest resetting it to stock and getting a return.
I would not recommend using the NST plugged in at all times - I think you will do better to let the battery cycle.
Why do you think that? I do it because a read that when the battery is fully charged, the light turns green and not continues charging the battery, so I suppose that direct energy is feeding the use of the device instead of charging my nook.
I thought about that a little more. On the NC, if the device is plugged in, the screen tends to behave very strangely - detecting nonexistent touches or accepting input, but then repeating it (fast page flipping through a book, rather than turning one page.)
The charger on the NC and NST is not its strong point (the NC in particular, but I've never liked the fit of the NST chargers much - on both of my devices, they tend to seat at an odd angle and need to be pushed a bit to seat correctly) and I've always wondered how well the rest of the device is actually isolated from current when it's plugged in.

I've just had the same happen to my NST. First a single horizontal line, now two.

Same here. One, two, three and yesterday appeared the fourth line! I have the Nook more than one year. I noticed the lines everytime after charging, so it could be connected. Discharge, charge, reset, nothing helps. When I will buy myself a tablet or a new reader. I will open it and pay with some display connectors.
I ended up returning mine to B&N as it was still under warranty.
But I'd be interested to know what you find if you take yours apart. It kinda sounds like a loose connection somewhere...

Running Nexus 7 without the battery inserted

Being a network specialist, I somehow got the idea that I would be able to bring my finace's N7 back from the grave even though it's outside of my training. I have never owned an N7 nor have I worked on one.
The unit is being shipped to me from Miami while I'm in Berkeley so I have a few days to do some preliminary research on the topic. From what she says, it sounds like the device will not turn on or charge.
I'll do the usual remedies like reconnecting the battery cable and cold boot options, but I'd like some insight if it's possible at all for the device to boot directly from the USB fed power connection without the battery inserted. That is, without any modification to the unit (soldering, etc) just the battery taken out.
If that's the case, I would be able to determine whether just a simple aftermarket battery purchase would be enough.
Any advice?

A mix of mechanical and ROM questions

2018 may be late in the game to become a new owner of a OnePlus 2 phone. But here I am. My main phone at present remains a Samsung Note 4, and I'm trying to get a feel for how this old (but not as old as the Note 4) phone can be repaired. My issues are a mix of battery, possible circuit board, and other problems / eccentricities.
The phone was given to me non-working. I have a minor-league reputation for rescuing phones, so thought I'd try this one.
First, I had to get it up and going. Nothing worked initially. I wasn't delighted to find out the battery is only accessible after removing two covers and about 30 microscopic screws. I reset it by pulling the small "plug" at top center-right and the phone decided to allow me to boot. I immediately (per instructions I found elsewhere here) went to fastboot and wiped the cache.
I did manage to install TWRP and the latest (as of a few days back) version of Lineage 8.1. But then the problems began again. The phone would suddenly, after charging for a while (and reporting a battery that was nearly charged), shut down. No charging icon showed on the screen.
Fast foward. Today, I got a cheap knock-off battery in the mail. It intially worked and I got it nearly charged. But after more spontaneous reboots I noticed something odd; in TWRP, the battery said only 50% charged while in Lineage it said 97% charged. So once again I wiped the cache and this time the ART/Dalvik cache as well (pointless, but ya never know).
This did get the two percentage reports matching up. And initially it got the phone working again. But alas, once again, the phone started the shutting down.
Currently, I'm leaving it overnight to charge - if in fact it is charging (how does one tell)? If that doesn't work, I'm thinking about using Odin to totally reflash the original version of the operating system.
Any other ideas or input - including laughing at me for bothering with this - is permitted.
I will say that the engineering of this phone compared to the older Note 4 leaves the Note easily the winner; to take its battery out is a matter of 20 seconds. Really not impressed with my OnePlus experience so far...
Thought I'd update things. After spending a day on sites (here and on the official OnePlus community boards) I tried any number of fixes. I'm reasonably convinced the only way to somewhat consistently start my particular OnePlus 2 phone is to:
1. Open it up, thus voiding the warranty (hehehe.... by now that's void anyway).
2. Unplug the battery's small plug at upper right-center of battery (a fingernail works fine, but do make sure the phone isn't plugged in!)
3. *Leave the back off* or at best gingerly snap it on but without attaching the screws. (Every time I did so, even after extensively using the phone while it lay on my sofa's arm and rebooting it numerous successful times previous to replacing the screws, the phone refused to reboot.)
4. I also cleaned the usb c socket with a wood toothpick and was a little surprised at how dirty it was; I did the same in a minimal way to the battery contacts.
5. I found no real use to having the actual OnePlus charger; I used it a bit but my best results came from the Samsung charger and a new (though cheap) usb c cable I nabbed via ebay.
Today I did get the phone going and intentionally wiped Lineage and installed the latest (2017) version of the OnePlus2 official os. It went on fine. I rooted it, installed apps, and (as mentioned) repeatedly shut down and restarted the phone, which promptly restarted with only a 3 second lag. I did this 5 times because one thread I found suggested this was an official OnePlus suggestion. (I rolled my eyes but did it anyway.) Played with the phone a bit, then shut it down again and screwed the back on. As noted, the phone suddenly wouldn't turn on again.
In summary, I'm not sure if this phone can be meaningfully resurrected. If I knew where what may be a short in it was, I could possibly replace that part. But I have little idea and am not quite the geek enough to sort that out. I am guessing at a short because without the lid or screws, it wants to work. It wants to be a good phone for me and I'll keep toying with it for a while longer.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Has anyone else experienced their OnePlus 2 working fine *without* the back cover screwed on, but as soon as it was screwed on the phone stopped working and wouldn't start again? And, if so, did they ever sort out why?

Hey. I experienced the same symptoms with a "official" replacement battery I found online. Random reboots over and over again until I couldn't even turn it one anymore.
TWRP was always showing different battery percentages than OS.once I put back in my old but original battery that came with the phone it turned on again and it works flawlessly again.

This is something I've read, and may well do. It also, however, raises another thorny set of issues re battery calibration. I understand that sometimes new batteries have to be "calibrated" by being charged, discharged completely, charged again, discharged completely, and charged yet again and discharged. After that, things are supposedly going to run right. Trouble is in my case, the phone doesn't want the battery; it keeps stopping completely and not restarting. Either the battery stats are wholly inaccurate (says around 57% charged during those brief times I've had it up) or I need to go with your idea. Trouble is there the original battery from this phone is dated 2015; I hope it has anything at all left to give.

Mine is dated 2015 as well and I'm getting through the day with closely 3 hours of SOT.

I'm trying this in desperation. The phone has gone completely unresponsive at this point, and I'm looking at having a technological paper weight. Hope I can resurrect it but the odds are not good.
Some progress, some regress.
Here's what I'm seeing. I can get the phone up and running again after extensive recharging. As long as I leave the back of the phone off - that is, both the inner and outer backs - it seems willing to keep running. As soon as I snap the inner back into place, not even with the screws yet, the phone locks up. Soon after, around 10 to 20 seconds, it shuts off. Sometimes it will restart and other times it won't for a long time, even after unplugging and replugging battery.
Has anyone else run into shorting or grounding issues associated with the back (inner, the one w/ 18 screws) case?
I am now back to a dead phone. A new (3rd party) battery is my current hope... charging it for over a day now has not yet led to the phone showing any sign of life.
One other question: I know both this cable and charger work, but as they are not the "original" OnePlus charger / cable combo, could that be the difference? I'd appreciate it if there is any clear evidence regarding this question.
The below article raises a disturbing possibility, based on the reality that OnePlus cables and chargers are - by OnePlus' own admission - non-standard and possibly could harm other electronics. But on top of that, and not well explored in the article, is whether or not OnePlus' charger/cable combo might even be damaging to the OnePlus 2 (and other OnePlus phones). They "assure us" this is not the case. Hmm.

I thought I'd update this thread with what may be the final installment.
I invested $70 in a highly bent but somehow still working second OnePlus 2 phone off ebay. (The guy had a great fall on a log story as to how the phone got bent.) Long story short... I gambled and won. That is, I gambled that the innards of the second phone would go into my first phone and that the first phone's screen would work. YES. And so, after playing amateur phone repairman, I have myself a OnePlus 2.
So many questions. Going to peruse this board now...
