Hi all,
I think I have soft bricked my S4 i337m rogers Canadian variant.
I had rooted / unlocked the bootloader with motochopper successfully.
- I am using CWM
First thing I tried to do was backup the phone onto the external SD which would not work so I just went onto the next step.
I tried flashing a ROM onto the phone after doing phone restore and clearing cache. All installed correctly (apparently) and now when I boot up the phone the Samsung logo will appear for about 5 seconds then the phone will go black and try to boot up again.
The good:
- i have access the recovery mode still
The bad:
- no recovery made for the phone
- seems to be boot looping
As a side not I have tried installing a couple other ROMs which all result in the same issue.
Is there anything that can possibly be done?
I would happily put the stock ROM back on the phone.
All help would be greatly appreciated!
Rob.
9 times out of 10 a factory reset will get you out of a boot loop. Do that in recovery and reboot.

Hi thanks for the reply. I have tried the factory reset and still does not fix the issue

If you are flashing a custom ROM that is not specifically for your phone, say a i9505 rom, you need to flash a Canadian kernel right after or you will bootloop. You also cannot flash any loki based roms either. As for the CWM backups, are you trying to back up to your external SD? If so, ensure the card is formatted fat32. To help get through your softbrick, just get into download mode and flash with odin

Okay great I will try these. Does the kernel have to be specific to the ROM?

The kernel is specific to your device. so you would use the i337M kernel.
So the procedure would be flash the rom of your choice, then before you boot flash YOUR i337M kernel, it will boot.
Good luck.
And make sure you do not flash a rom for the i9500 as you will hard brick
Also,
Make sure you choose the right i337m kernel. ie. a TouchWiz kernel for TW Roms and an AOSP kernel for CM10.1/AOSP Roms.
You should be able to:
remove your sdcard,
format it to fat32,
download the correct rom and kernel for you i337m to your freshly formatted sdcard,
put the card back into your phone,
boot into recovery,
install ROM zip from ext-sdcard,
install Kernel zip from ext-sdcard,
reboot.
phew....sounds like a lot of steps but not really I guess.

Hello,
Greetings to you, I am sorry you have come to this point. I myself have bricked my phone just yesterday from flashing a bad ROM and not backing up my ROM properly. But I hope I can help you with some tips that i did to recover my phone fully. I apply some links to help you out but I recommend some patience lots of HW. ( Kies didn't work for me bugger =p.)

there is a user by the name of samersh72. you can request for a link to download your correct firmware it's best to get back to stock, ( don't forget to thank the user . )
this is someones video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a3qghhpDxg ( this helped me out as well)
I have these files/programs readied when I reverted back to stock
odin 1.3 ( i have odin 3.0 and didn't work for me reverting stock as it couldnt detect my tar.md5 file, but for some reason it worked for odin 1.3)
have your correct firmware ( I downloaded mine from http://www.sammobile.com, but for some reason I can't find yours, there is one on this site for sure just have the patience to look) make sure its for your correct carrier too.
im pretty sure you know how to do the DL mode, but just incase ill assume that you may or may not know, ill type this in anyway:
Get your S4 Download mode, [pressing up+power+home], (sometimes if i feel its not kicking in, just quick release then do it again)
open your odin 1.3, plug your phone in, tick auto-reboot, and F. reset time. PDA ticked, then find your correct firmware. hit start, then i hope from this something good will come out.
Best of wishes in your journey here in xda.
Cheers!

Thanks for posting this. I hope many people read it. Anyone who flashes needs to know how to return to stock before they start flashing roms. You will need it someday!

I've done a lot of searching online but couldn't find a solution. Something happened on my S5 and now when it boots, it shows a unlocked padlock and says "Custom" underneath that and goes to a screen that says "System software not authorized". I searched online and tried all the solutions (going to recovery mode, going to download mode, hitting volume down when it boots up, etc) but none of it works.
This is the only success I had: I installed the phone drivers and Odin3 3.0.7 and then tried using a recovery rom from this website, but it failed to write in Download mode. I was then going to try using the stock ROM to flash it, but I'm wondering, would that erase all the data on the phone? My phone model is SM-G900V and the SKU is SMG900VZWV, thanks in advance!
My entire goal is just to get to the pictures on the phone. Is there some way to do that? Even if I was able to get into the home screen once, I would move the files onto the microSD card and be all set. Please help! I'd really like to be able to save my pics from over 2 years!
At least can someone tell me if I get the stock ROM and flash it in Download mode, will that wipe the data on the phone?

The pics are on the internal storage of the phone. I'm going to get the stock ROM and try flashing it. My only question now is the stock ROM is like 1.7gb. The internal memory on the phone was low because of all the pics and stuff. So when I write the stock ROM to the phone, isn't it going to overwrite some stuff? I'm only interested in the pics.
Thanks for the reply!
Hi,
I've owned all the Galaxies and never had any problems installing ROMs.
Ten days ago I bought an unlocked new GT-I9500 in USA. It's not a knockoff, I've checked the IMEI and I know the device (I've had one for a year back in 2013), there is no chance this phone is not legit (even though it's made in China).
I brought the phone to Argentina, where I live.
When I first turned it on I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, so I assume it worked fine. The thing is I didn't get to test it thoroughly at that moment because I installed a 5.0.1 stock ROM right away (I think the phone came with 4.4.2).
This 5.0.1 ROM worked horribly, all apps were force closing all over the place (even unopened apps), without me doing anything, I would be just watching the screen and the FC dialogs would just pile up. The phone was unusable because you needed to dismiss several FC dialogs before you could get to the screen below, and by then you got a new FC coming up.
Many times when I rebooted, it would say it was optimizing 3 or 4 apps, and then it would work a bit better, or maybe a bit worse, it was a totally random thing. It also rebooted spontaneously, Play Store would close spontaneously, many apps refused to update giving error codes like "unknown error 960" or something like that.
Things I already tried:
-Reinstalled same ROM 5.0.1 I9500UBUHOE2_I9500UUBHOE2_I9500UBUHOE1_HOME.tar
-Installed different ROM 5.0.1 I9500UBUHOE3_I9500ZTOHOF1_I9500UBUHOE1_HOME.tar
-Did all wipes, before and after
-Reinstalled with PIT and re-partition
-Installed Philz and tried "clean to install a new ROM"
-Reinstalled 5.0.1 ROM
-Again tried "clean to install a new ROM"
-Reinstalled 4.4.2 I9500UBUGNJ1_I9500UUBGNJ1_I9500UBUGNJ1_HOME.tar, which is the version I think the phone originally had installed.
-Of course, in the meantime I lost the IMEI and had to restore it from backup.
After downgrading to 4.4.2 the situation got a little better, but I still get several FCs and spontaneous reboots. On one opportunity I booted into recovery, wiped cache, and when I rebooted it got stuck in the boot logo. I removed the battery, turned it on and it did the same thing. I had to boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset to get it to boot.
I have two theories:
1) There are some residual files or settings from previous ROMs that I can't seem to get erased, and these are interfering with the new ROMs I install.
2) The phone is defective (memory issue, perhaps?)
Theory 2) seems odd because before installing 5.0.1 for the first time, the phone appeared to work correctly. Granted, I just tried it for a minute or so, but anyway.
Theory 1) seems odd because I did all the wipes, the "clean to install a new ROM" thing, and even re-partition. Can any problematic data survive after all that?
I guess the questions for you guys are:
1) Did this happen to anyone else? Could you solve the problem?
2) Is there a way to erase the phone more deeply?
Thank you.
Ricardo
The PIT file should repartition the phone, meaning it should also wipe it.
Are you sure it is a GT-I9500?
People tend to repair phones with compatible parts from other phones. In this case maybe they used parts from other S4 models (9505, 9506 etc).
Boot into download mode and check the phone model.

The phone is brand new, and I've checked all known signs of it possibly being fake. I'm pretty sure it's not fake.
See attached image.
Sound like your storage is corrupted.
If you are out of options then you can try to select nand erase all in Odin. Maybe that could fix it. Make sure to add a .pit file, bootloader, modem, rom and check re-partition before doing that.

I believe there's no "brand new" S4 in the market right now.
I haven't used philz but twrp .. and if you also install twrp recovery for i9500 ..then you get option for advance wipe .. check everything in advance wipe ( don't forget to take backups .. contacts ..files etc) then swipe to wipe everything .. then go back to main menu and reboot in download mode .. (you may get warning like no OS installed) then install a new ROM via Odin from PC .. you will get a fresh installed ROM
If you still face any FC .. go back to recovery mode .. choose advance then do fix permission .. hope that helps ..

The Samsung official Roms have all integrated, SO, booloader, modem, etc. What lacks is the pit file, you have to get it from other place. I have an I9500 and had those issues when installing 5.0.1 official rom, i believe is not a very stable rom and also drains a LOT of battery. If you can install a custom recovery, try the "[GearCM][i9500][5.1.x] Optimized CyanogenMod 12.1 for Samsung Galaxy S4" rom, the post is in this forum , I'm currently using it and works awesome.
Ok guys, so I tried nand erase and the results are the same. Used both a 5.0.1 and a 4.4.2 ROM. Could this be a memory hardware error? Is there anything more radical that is left for me to try?

You can try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-orig-develop/mod-multirom-v28-t2864469
Then you can boot a rom from your sd card. See if that works ok.
Will try that.
In the meantime, quick question: I've noticed that after nand erase the IMEI is retained. This would mean that nand erase does not erase everything really. Isn't it possible that some information is preserved (like the IMEI), and this is what is causing trouble?

Greetings,
Yesterday I was about to change my current rom as my phone was running on a custom rom that I found here on the forum with a CWM recovery.
So I went into recovery mode to make a nandroid backup for my device just incase of something bad happens.
When I started the backing up process it took a min or 2 to start and transferring the data and afterwards the device turned off and it went to a black screen with the android logo and it says downloading don't turn off target..
the thing is it still on that screen since yesterday and I can do anything about it because it took longer than the usual as the youtube videos showed me.
I tried turning off the device and turning it back on and still no luck.
I went to download mode to bascially flash a TWRP recovery or a root using odin to later on flash the rom that I wanted but I had no luck as every single time I try to flash something in odin it says "There is no PIT partition"
I looked up online and I found few PIT files and I tried again and its the same thing but it says re partition operation failed something like that.
after doing some research I found even If I flashed the stock firmware it won't change anything as the device won't accept it because of the PIT thing.
I really need your help guys, what can I do now ?
Try using different USB cables and USB 2.0 ports to flash a stock ROM with Odin.

I did and I still have the same issue..
I even tried a different computer and nothing really works, keep in mind that I have downloaded the official stock rom and tried to flash that too and I still have no luck.
I really need help guys :/
Find the correct PIT file and flash that or take for service repair .
Alright I'm writing this reply to whoever searches online for a similar problem.
I fixed my phone long time ago and the problem was ... "the phone USB port"
it turns out my port isn't really good as it had issues in the past and it was changed but I didn't know that until recently and I completely forgot about it.
I didn't fix my port though but how did I fix the phone ?
well it turns out even if your port was bad (depends on the ports condition of course) getting an original cable can help you flash something isn't big such as a root or a recovery mode.
in my case I used an original cable a normal micro USB but after using an original USB 3.0 cable I was able to flash a root and a custom recovery, yes I tried flashing a stock firmware but it I didn't work because of how my port is acting I was kinda limited to the things I can flash so I was able to flash small files but not an entire operating system.
So I flashed a root and a TWRP custom recovery in order to be able to flash an entire OS through the phone itself without the need of plugging it to my computer so I uploaded my custom ROM on an SD Card and flashed it through the recovery mode and I was back in business!
I can safely say the case is solved, I don't know if you guys close the solved topics here or something but thanks for everyone's help.
SEE YA LATER
But port is not PIT problem .
I've had LOS for 6 months now and really impressed with it but want to go back to stock ROM or to a debloated stock ROM because of how bad the camera is and battery is on LOS. It wasn't really bothering me much back then but now I need it more than ever. I have TWRP flashed as well if that helps.
I ask you guys to help me get back as close to stock ROM as possible or a debloated stock ROM and please show me how. I have Odin and Samsung Drivers.
Also can I get some suggestions on what ROM I should download and where?
Thanks in advance. :good:

Just go back to stock marshmallow ROM. Best for battery .. Do your own debloat. Many threads here that explain in a safe way. For the rom collection, sammobile.com has many types.. but for free downloads, it is very slow. I recommend going to samsung-updates.ru for a quick download. But few types are provided. Good luck.

You don't need wipe anything. Actually, flash stock ROM with odin via AP slot, it will wipe everything (If your phone ROM is different from the one you're flashing) .. including internal memory / sdcard. So backup first if you need it. You need ODIN for flash stock ROM instead of TWRP.

Flashing via PC odin will not touch your data neither in internal nor external sd cards so no need to remove the card from the phone. You only need to back up your user data which you will lose like: contacts, SMS, call history, system settings etc.

Basically for OTA to work you need to be unrooted so it should work but why not to chose easier way - just download latest stock MM Rom for your country and flash it via odin.

Yea .. that really happened. But if I flash from the same ROM, it will not be re-format. Using Odin v3.13. My device G900D. Probably not Odin's cause. Maybe my ROM auto-reformat all when flash above custom system. Lol .. just my guess ..

Check updato.com. I used sammobile.com but it is rather slow and you have to be registered.
im downloading official firmware now.
going Lineage 15.1-20180903-nighlty 8.0.1 --------> G900TUVS1FOL1 6.0.1 and then back to lineage. Hopefully this will allow the unlock code to actually work.
It kept looping after i put it in so i figured it was a rom thing since the tmobile stuffs gone. Its cool, i needed the practice anyway. lol
I wanto to do the same.
From LOS 15.1 I want to go back to the official ROM.
I found it (cannot post the Url because I'm a new user) but I have trouble downloading it, even if I bought the fast connection speed.
I have a Mac and I don't have Odin and I'm trying to figure out how to restore it.
In the meantime I'm try to understand which Odin version I have to use in case a friend of mine will let me use his laptop to restore it.
Thanks to anyone that can help me.

Believe it or not, MacOS is actually the best go to for a portable platform. I was kinda like you until I actually used one.
Although I am using a budget grade gaming laptop from ASUS, I cannot deny how polished it is at doing general everyday things.

I will be attempting almost the same exact thinkg tonight, but going from Lineage16 to G900TUVU1GQC2 so I can enter my unlock code.
You mentioned the phone was looping....when was this? after you entered the code in stock? Or after you went back to Lineage?
Also, did you reinstall TWRP and restore a backup of Lineage and was able to keep unlocked? I read somewehere restoring a backup after unlocking will lock the network again.
