[Question] Current state of custom roms - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Its been quite a while since I've had a phone that's been able to run custom roms (been on samsung snapdragon models with non unlockable bootloaders for a while now....think nexus 6p was my last phone with custom roms), but I remember that rom's came out pretty quick (however that could have been because of some nexus devices I had)
I guess what i'm getting at is, like how TWRP was facing issues with decryption, is there a major hurdle with custom roms for the 6t? Is it the fingerprint reader? Or perhaps lack of interest in the device (this one would be weird to me since it feels like this is a pretty popular device at this point).
Please don't this as a "WHERE R ALL MAH ROMZ AT " kinda thread. Purely curiosity as I'm super happy with my phone currently with magisk and substratum :]

Well, this should probably go in the question and answer area, but legitimate question still. I have heard some others in other threads say that the fingerprint scanner might be weird to work with, since it's a new concept. It seems that OnePlus devices generally have some solid Dev scenes though, I'm thinking it's a matter of time until we start to see a bunch of custom roms surface. We just got a functional TWRP build that even still is getting small tweaks and updates so I think we're just in early stages of the phone, the best is yet to come! Never settle ma dude!

6 and 6T source's are unified so roms aren't hard to bring up but most devs will not be interested making the jump from 6 or they'll make the jump to the Poco F1

Sucks that the F1 doesn't have my LTE bands 2 and 12, or I would have gotten it in a heartbeat over this. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing phone that looks way better than the F1, but the bigger battery and thriving development is super tempting.

Yep if it wasn't for the poor quality panel they used and the LED bleed + the notch I'd of taken the Poco F1 was on sale recently for like £279 for the 6/64 variant. Cheaper than a OnePlus 3 at launch.

The notch and panel weren't deal breakers for me, but my phone is my primary source of internet access and I need those 2 bands in my area for decent connection.

Should i buy oneplus one ?

Hello,
i have a Samsung S3 right now with CM11 nightly. It is pretty good and stable. Drivers are not perfect. Expecially camera drivers.
I would like to buy a new device. I have waited for N6 and unfortunally it is too big, too thick e too expensive. So I am thinking to buy a Oneplus One.
I have read around about touchscreen issue. It is fixed ? Drivers in Cyanogen are stable ?
I want a stable phone for daily use. It is ok to test new rom o new kernel sometimes, but i need a stable phone to work with.
What you think ? Should i buy one ?
Thank you !
I have the OPO and its been over 2 month i'm using it!The phone is great and so are the drivers! No touchscreen issues for me!I use multi rom to test new rooms!I think you should go with the oneplus!

I think before making a new thread for a question thats been asked a million times before and an answer that only you can answer you should search for what others have said. Here are only a few I found real quick that can help you out. Lets be honest as well you are asking about rooting your phone and will it be stable. You can read up on any rom you like and find out if its stable but honestly there all based off of cm which is quite stable at this moment. If you are worried stay stock.
First link stock rooted where I would go to ask or rather read up to see just how stable the stock rom is... At least its a starting point. My bad if you think I am being an ass but your question is slightly subjective and all your answers are out there for you. Again my bad

OnePlus One fits a niche crowd, people who like to tinker with their devices and want a true powerhouse to take advantage of. There is also a subset of users that would want a pure-ish Android experience with a customizable interface minus the fluff that comes with a skinned interface like TouchWiz or Sense.
As it stands, I like CyanogenMod without any further tweaks. The phone runs well and doesn't give me many issues to worry about. (Note: no phone is perfect)
If you need mhl, hell no. Otherwise it's the best phone out right now...

Yes though it depends on budget as well I guess. Dollar for dollar I think the OnePlus is still a better buy, however if it's within budget the nexus 6 is clearly the better phone overall.
Mmm bacon
Thnk you all for reply.
I have readed a lot about OPO. I dont like N6, it is big, fat, heavy and expencive. I prefere a 5.5 inc display.
The main problem about OPO are the yellow band and touchscreen issue, that are not resolved with 38R.
I will wait till that problems will be resolved, later i will buy one.
Thank you all !
Its definitely the best smartphone for its price range right now. I have been using it over two month now and i did not have any issue.
Before i bought it, i too was worried about the yellow band problem. But until now I never get the yellow band or touch screen problem.
OnePlus One is perfectly fine and great performance. After i got this phone i immediately try antutu benchmark and suprised that it got the first ranking. That is something to brag to your friends.
As for the rom, CM11S is really stable for daily use and i did not have any problems with it. Great multitasking, smooth gaming, nice camera performance, great speaker quality and great battery life. Plus i heard that they are working to release Android L update for OPO. Cant wait for that. Even if you still want custom rom, most of them that i tried are stable for daily use.

It also depend on how long you're going to keep this phone also. I get at lease 2 phones a year. I have the oneplus one and it always seem like I go back to the Note 3.... But the nexus 6 will be a phone you can keep for another year

Ok if you have read then you also know that not everyone has these issues and the touchscreen issue was software related and those on 38r saying they still have an issue could be user error or faulty devices. Now lets be honest 1+ has sold quite a few devices and I know of at least half a dozen people with them. With that being said I am the only one with yellow banding and its barely noticeable and since the update no one has the touchscreen issue.
Why do so many allow the voices of the few decide for them. At the end of the day it is your decision and if you have done your research then YOU are making the best choice for you....
I've had the s3 and was running cm11 with oneplus mods on it and I can say it doesn't compare.
This phone is ridiculous, it amazingly fast and I have had no problems.
I ordered mine on Saturday and it came yesterday so I've only had a day with it so far but I'm so impressed, would recommend to anyone.
I had a G3, Note3, Z2 and this OPO It's the most incredible smartphone. And the feature that we can unlock bootloader and not lose the warranty is the best!

The G3 was the 16Gb (2GB ram) or 32GB (3GB ram) version?
I'm thinking of buying the oneplus 64GB or the G3 32GB, but i really can't choose which one...
Ive got the 64gb sandstone black, had it for 3 weeks now, worth every penny. At this point the company is well situated and running at full speed, buy with confidence and you will not be disappointed.
You should buy and have a try yourself. For me, this phone is better than expected.
Phone is amazing, period. Get it if you can

For sure. I've been pleased with the phone. The size is nice for me even with my small hands, the battery stands on its own, its plenty fast, many ROMs and kernels to enjoy and for the price what more can you ask for.
This phone should of been the new Nexus 6. Tons of development here
SlimKat or SlimPop
As someone who was in love with my previous phone, nexus 5. The OnePlus is the best phone at market price-wise. If it was priced in the same range as N5 or N6, I would definitely chose a N phone. Software-wise it is kinda buggy (both cm11 and cm11s) and hardware-wise (touchscreen and yellow screen)
I would wait until n6, and then make a choice, because the n6 isn't that much bigger then the OnePlusOne, but damn expensive.
I think I will sell my OnePlusOne when the n6 hit the market, cause I really miss the wireless charging.

Is ZTE developer friendly?

Hey folks,
what are the experiences with developing custom roms/kernels for ZTE?
Does ZTE release any helpfull sources, or are they as "closed sourced" as Samsung is?
Currenty OnePlus are releasing all sources they have and developers need, and as a result just 2 weeks after the launch there are already ALL imporant customs roms are available for the OP3. Can we expect any neraly simmilar from ZTE?
Regards,
Mika
They are not friendly at all. Some of the Axon series can't even be rooted so yea.
for the moment we're all waiting anxiously with the hope that ZTE releases unlocking bootloader and sources?
Sounds not very promising or motivating to buy the Axon 7. I really don't get it why companies are trying to prevent million of android enthusiast to buy their devices ...
they probably see stuff like sources as intellectual property which could be copied by their competitors or lead to more exploits.

Kernelsources fall under GPl though. So if they dont comply with the Licence you could just sue them for it.
I was thinking of things like drivers for proprietary stuff like the speakers, DAC, HDMI etc, anything that they've made themselves or licensed from a third party.
Axon 7 is from specs side way better than 1+3 in my opinion and it costs only €50 more...but...the thing about hard or impossible to root and lack of custom ROMs holds me from buying it.
I am unsure about ZTE to deliver long-term updates...usually....I can only rely on custom ROMs for updates.
At the moment, I still haven't decided which one to get. I am torn between community support (1+3) vs better balanced specs (Axon7).
I agree the ZTE Axon 7 looks really good. I am a bit concerned with its lack of root. Without root no Custom O/S or software will be developed. I have pre ordered the phone but may cancel due to lack of root. I will decide soon what to do.

An Android smartphone without root possibility and custom ROMs, as long as the manufacturer keeps delivering updates...let say for at least 2 years... you do not have a huge problem.
The problem is...if you do not have root, do not have custom ROMs and the manufacturer does not deliver updates at all....the phone is so good as a piece of junk
Apparently some of the chinese ones are getting google play and other google apps on them, that isn't usually just as easy as installing the apk file so how are they getting these apps on?
Any chinese phone I've bought generally refuses to let you install google apps as they want system access.

I completely agree on this. I'm split between those two and consider a third one which hasn't been released yet the Asus Zenfone 3 deluxe.
I guess we will wait somewhat longer for more information to come out.
@celoxocis
Zenfone 3 deluxe, the variant with Snap 821+6GB RAM+256GB memory is too expensive.
The 820, 4GB RAM and 64GB memory version is interesting too...but...nobody knows when this will come to Europe.

For Europe it will be launched after "IFA 2016" which is 04.-09. September 2016.
The good thing is the older Zenfone Series is already supported by CM.
And i know some CM devs are looking forward to add support for the Zenfone 3 deluxe once out.
I will definitely wait. For me it comes down which one of the three gets the best dev support.
For now:
1+3 is leading (except for their Dash(Vooc) Charger sources. which is why i still hold back)
ZTE Axon 7. Who knows if it ever be unlock-able. The forum post might just have been another PR gag.
Zenfone 3 deluxe. Waiting patiently...
Almost complete pre-order but decided against it due to its uncertain rootability. I still own Oneplus One and love it but want slight upgrade and thought Axon 7 would be the perfect upgrade progression. I will wait and see.

I like how you said "slight upgrade"! I love my OPO too, it is as fast as ever and plenty powerful, but the front facing speakers of the Axon 7 are very intriguing and I'm also considering it unless ZTE is awful with pushing out updates and if the bootloader will stay locked with no root. Then the only option is OP3.
Another One owner here looking to "upgrade". The battery on my phone is getting bad. I'm sure a new battery would breath life into this phone but after my wife's new Moto G (125$) camera bested my One's, I knew it was time. Bring on the front face speakers and Daydream support, as long as the bootloader is unlocked! Better have double tap to wake!

It has double tap to wake. Very useful.
Word going around is that ZTE said in a community webinar tonight that it's a matter of when NOT if the bootloader is going to be unlocked. Doesn't sound like it's launching with an unlocked bootloader but it will be unlocked "later". Kinda lame.
I can confirm that on the webinar it was stated its a matter of "when" not "if"

Opinions about leeco

Hey guys, im looking for opinions about leeco and their smartphones, maybe some owners of previous devices? Long story short, i currently own nexus 6p, its a fricking awesome device, but i kinda grew bored of it, and battery life is not that great. I dont want to spend extra money on new toy, but by selling 6p i should get atleast 300euros, and for this money i have few options. Its either le pro 3, mi 5s plus, or 100euros extra for mi note 2. I pretty much know what to expect from xiaomi, but im completely clueless about leeco. Is there any development? I looked around forums of older devices, and they seem pretty dead I dont expect same level of development as nexus, but having few options, like miui or cm would be great, cause im already sure i couldnt stand stock rom lol. Also what about customer support? So any input is welcome, also any recommendations of above devices, thank you and sorry for long ass post lol
Currently, the bootloader of the US version of the Pro3 cannot be unlocked. There is a lot of negative comments about that on the forum. [http://forum.le.com/us/index.php?threads/unlock-bootloader.3682/
There is a positive first impressions post on the LeEco Pro3 XDA site. I'm conflicted - getting my phone tomorrow.
I have Le 1 PRO, to be honest it is a gamble. The devices are good but the support is terrible. If someone is not porting AOSP/CM to these devices they will have a very short life.
Le 1 series suffered some major faulty design problems in term of GPS/Wifi and so on. We moved to 6.0.1 only when series 2 came out.
Probably Le 3 series will receive n7.1.1 only after Le 4 series (if any) will be announced/sold, in the meantime you will have countless of useless update (clearly not on the camera since it will be too good).
I've seen some work on Le 2 series, hopefully there will be even more on Le 3 series.
As of now i'm not 100% regretting my choice (270 euros 1.5 years ago for Le 1 Pro) but it is literally a for-geek phone.
If you just want a top-spec phone to use at a great price the le pro 3 fits the bill.
If you want to tinker, probably any other unlocked phone will work better unless they decide to unlock the bootloader.
I've got no regrets so far for $299 us

If you get bored, but then also want the option of cm, I'm not sure how getting a new device will help you. You can have CM or miui now. And CM isn't exactly a grand departure from AOSP/CAF. It's relatively barebones android. Most phones these days are almost identical slabs. If you're gonna use the same OS as you had before, all you're really changing is the shape. Also, the Nexus is going to be your best bet for tinkering. Nexus or Pixel.
As for support, from what I understand LeEco isn't great when it comes to that. Whatever fashion you receive your device in, expect it to change VERY little. It also doesn't help that reports are popping up that the north american venture is coming up very short. Makes me believe they'll be pulling up stakes and going back to China. With the Pro3 currently locked, I'd say avoid it. If you want a toy phone to tinker with, the S3 might be a better choice. It's cheaper, already unlockable (or so people are reporting, I don't actually know myself), and if it receives any development, then it should be interesting. If you get it for $150, it isn't too much of a gamble.
If I were in your position, I'd steer clear. Especially if you were in the US on T-Mobile and can qualify for a Pixel half off through their promotion. At least that way you'll get wifi calling and some top-notch cameras. Either that or an Oppo. Since you're in europe, I don't know what the alternatives are. At least the chinese version is unlockable (the x720) but there's still the matter of development. And I think that'll be unlikely since CM development usually comes to US models.
I don't understand why you keep saying the bootloader is locked though, there is a user on this forum that had it unlocked on x727, LeTV also is officially stating on lemall site that the bootloader is unlockable

I've seen several folks in the US version discussion thread report that does NOT work, or -go command version either. So far Leeco are being dicks and not allowing it. Maybe an OTA will change that, and they just didn't want it being unlockable right away... No idea yet. I don't really mind the software that much, it's pretty nice, performs well and battery life is excellent expecially standby. But not even having root is quite a deal breaker. I'd return it just on that news but I don't have more money to replace it with anything else since I broke my X Pure that I was going to sell to offset the Pro3 price. Guess I'm stuck waiting for root and roms that so far looks like will never come. Still a great phone though, even signal and GPS are great which were my biggest concerns about it.

Yeah, not as good as a 6P for sure. It's like most cheaper cameras... Still great in bright light. Indoors not great. Low light, pretty bad. I've seen worse on more expensive phones though. It's better than my X Pure's camera.

This phone is great. So far so good. Coming from a GS5
Well like everyone else have said so far, the x727 can't be unlocked.
the x720 is quite another story, im sitting with TWRP, rooted and with xposed along with all the other great stuff.
The phone is outstanding quality, full metal unibody and all that jazz.
The Camera is uhm there? but it's overall not the best performer, you can take some nice shots in daylight but that's about it.
i installed a custom version of EUI to remove the bloatware, and i'm currently rocking the leaked pixel launcher on top, so far so good.
The only other rom for this phone is MIUI, which is having some issues (atleast for me) with 4g LTE, it just locks itself onto 3g and HSPA+
My dream is a CM based rom sometime in the near future.

Looking to buy OP 2; couple questions

Hello.
I'm looking for a new phone, my budget is around 320 USD and therefore OnePlus 2 has really caught my eye. I've found a deal for 300 USD and I'd like to ask a couple questions.
1. The OnePlus 2 sports Snapdragon 810. I haven't heard much about it, but isn't SD 810 infamous for its issues with overheating? Is overheating an issue with OnePlus 2? Can it be completely resolved by flashing a different ROM/Kernel?
2. I plan to have this device for a longer period of time, around 3-4 years. Is OnePlus 2 a viable choice, despite the fact that almost 2 years passed from the release? Will it be able to hold off for that long, in terms of ROM support and general performance/usage?
3. How satisfied are you with your phone? Would you recommend it to me?
Thanks in advance.

1. Snapdragon 810: daily usage is good (I'm not a gamer at all): Messenger, Fenix (Twitter Client), WhatsApp, Facebook through Chrome Dev: everything is good. Yes, just good. Not awesome.
2. Long period of time ? Hell no. Look at OxygenOS update(s) for example. Well. we still don't have 7.x as OnePlus 3 / 3T already have 7.1.x. ROM support. Maybe custom ones yeah, but I think that's all.
Also, Grarak, which is one of the maintainer of LineageOS for the OnePlus 2, seems to stop build ROMs, as announced here. This might be an issue in future, even if there is some developers on this phone.
3. Satisfied ? Not at all. I bought this phone because I had an invite back in time there were still some, and I though hype would be the same as OnePlus One. But very disappointed with phone.
Just go for 3T, or if you have time, wait for OnePlus 4 | 5 , rumors say OnePlus might announced it soon.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer.
I'd like to look back on some questions:
2. Well, I was probably planning to use custom ROMs exclusively, I'll see about that. I didn't expect much from OygenOS to be honest. The thing about Garak seems worrying though.
3. I'd really like to go for the 3T, but I'm restricted by my budget which is around 330 USD. Do you have a better phone to propose?

You could search for the LG G4 for example, which as a Snapdragon 808, 3GB of RAM, Sdcard and QHD Screen, around 325-350$. Be sure, if you buy it, to check for an unlocked one (no locked bootloader for example).
If you search, you could be able to find a OnePlus 3 (just 3, not 3T), under 350$.

While G4 is certainly an interesting choice, I'm hesitant when going for it since I'm worried of all the bootloop issues that were reported to occur. I also think that I could use a little bumped-up specs.
Thank you for reminding me of OnePlus 3. Since there are small differences between 3 and 3T, I'll try and find a deal under 350$. If you have any online shops to propose, please do so.

You could have a look at Swappa which is a platform where users sell their used mobile. There is "partnership" with XDA, so this site can be trust.

Sadly there are no entries for my market (Europe). However, browsing Ebay, I found a listing claiming they have a new OP 3T 64 GB at $352 "in perfect condition". The seller states: "Bought as Anniversary present. To be honest it's a lovely phone if you like Android But I wanted an iPhone. My wife thought I'd like this instead. Used for 2 hrs around the house and that's all. "
How legit do you think this is?
Oh yess man! I've been using the device for quite awhile now and yes I won't recommend it to u now. It's good but not awesome, just good! Moreover, the software updates are kind of on a standstill now however Custom roms are abundant.
At this point of time, within your budget, I would rather recommend you to go with a device with a sd625! Excellent processor with an exceptional battery management, no heating no matter what you throw at it! Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Lenovo P2 or the upcoming Moto G5 plus ( supposedly to come with Dual Pixel tech same as in Samsung S7) are a few to mention. Moreover, Xiaomi Mi 5 (comes with SD820) is a crazy good phone to consider if u can get your hands on one! Highly recommended!!

Thank you for the reply. I can't go with the Mi 5 due to it being incompatible with my network. What do you think of the Lenovo ZUK Z2 Pro? It looks like an absolute beast to me.

Ya Z2 pro is a pretty good device! But i don't think that it has much software development! And the Camera is mediocre too. Performance wise, its a beast.

Agreed. I don't use camera that much so it's fine for me. I wish it had more software development than it, but even then, it seems to be extremely good out of the box (software-wise). So yeah, I'm in kind of a dilemma now, cause I need a device that will last 3 years or more. Also I can't go with Redmi Note 4 or Lenovo P2 because they don't have the required bands for my provider.

Then my opinion is that u must wait a week or two and buy yourself a Moto G5+ it will be having the same multipurpose fingerprint sensor (the one Lenovo uses), a class apart camera, much faster updates and vast dev community and this time they are even implementing moto voice feature which was earlier enjoyed only by the moto x users! I am not a moto fan though but this device looks promising!

Seems reasonable. I might as well wait for G5+ and buy it when it becomes available. Thank you once again.
Take my advice and don't buy it.
So did you go for the OP2?
The G5 looks like a good alternative!
no save your hard earned money and buy a better phone, this is already a 2 year old phone and its not worth buying anymore, otherwise if you find a new one for just $50 bucks go for it otherwise forget this phone even existed.

Low development

So maybe it's because I'm coming from a Nexus 6 and a Nexus 6p but the pixel development doesn't seem to be as bountiful. Could be the fact Oreo just got released and devs are busy or the pixel is harder to work with. Not complaining, just an observation. Just scored a pixel for nothing so this should get me through till the pixel 3 comes out. Really nice phone.

Also, the ownership takes a huge hit from sooo many Verizon owners being locked out of any rooting or mods of any kind. Big Red tells us that these phones are not ours to do with what we want. I would bet even after you pay the phone off you still won't be able to unlock your bootloader.

That's true. Guess I didn't think of that. I'm in a area where Verizon is not good at all so to me they don't seem like a big deal. Then again I'm on us cellular which is way small lol. I wish I could get in that TMobile or att train and use a one plus device. That seems like the new Nexus but with no cdma support I can't get it.
This is actually the first phone that I felt satisfied with out of the box. I used be a flashaholic, but now I haven't even rooted my XL. Maybe that sentiment is also common.
yeah dev definitely slowed down after oreo update since it broke twrp for a while and devs had to figure out why rom flashes were bootlooping. just saw pixel dust was released for oreo so if you want a custom rom you can give that one a shot https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/development/rom-pixeldust-marlin-t3581750
It wasn't just Oreo hampering development. Even on Nougat it was a long effort just to dev recovery and root due to new system (A/B partitions) and security.
Stock Oreo is so solid no real need for ROM. It's enough to root and do a few tweaks or install kernel or run root apps. Even on 7.1 the custom roms offer very little over stock to bother with them.
So like I said I'm new to the pixel. What is the hot kernel? I know elemental is always a solid choice but I loved @TheFLash kernel on my Nexus 6p. What are you guys running for some additional battery life?
using kirisakura right now https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/development/kernel-kirisakura-kernel-0-1-t3554330 dev is active and always updates every month

Most use the Elemental X. There was also Franco, but no Oreo compatibility yet.

I think it has a lot to do with how smooth the software is by default and how much Android has evolved. We can now theme are phones without root on stock roms, use picture in picture, split screen apps. Battery life is good, bloat is minimal. I'm running out of reasons to install a rom, there really is no longer a bit performance jump. The only rom I'm really interested in is Paranoid Android when it's Oreo release drops. They offer some very cool features that makes it just worth the effort such as the PIE wheel.
@snoprosledneck88 May I ask how you got a pixel for nothing? Been trying to get one for development/app development but don't feel like spending hundreds when I have a perfectly good phone right now.

It was a replacement phone for a Nexus 6p that had a bad battery.
For me, it has to do with how smooth the phone is out of the box and the evolution of Substratum to enable theming which completes my needs.

That's true. If I was on a "stable build" I would root and use it. (I'm on the Android beta program) I know you can do it without root but you need to buy another app so for right now it's a no-go.
You can root 8.1 beta no problem.

I know you can. Maybe a little lazy haha. How often does android release a new beta? This is my first time being on it, always have flashed roms.
I gotta say I do miss the tons of options that come with custom roms.. Little things like the speed meter in the status bar, customizing the buttons, hardware volume keys to audio skip, etc.
Sure they aren't functional necessities but damn nice amenities once you get used to them. Does there exist something to add these kinds of features to 8.x?
Since Oreo release i don't flash Custom ROMs anymore. too much effort for me and i can spend that time on something productive ? .. I'm not missing any feature either. Skip playlist with volume button can be done with tasker, for data speed on status bar I'm using an app. For missing tiles in the extended notification panel, I'm using"tiles" app.
Right now on 8.1 beta. There will be another DP coming this month and then final launch in December I guess. Most stable DP1 I've even used so far

Dp1 with root has been amazing. Incredible fluidity and insane battery. Zero complaints. Miss some small tweaks, and would love always on display, but we've come a long way from donut and eclair

I did a warranty exchange on my 32GB Verizon Pixel XL and they sent me a brand new 128GB Version. I booted it the 1st time with my TMO SIM and been happy ever since Bootloader UNLOCKED, Rooted, etc. There is however a lack of development compared to the Nexus 6, but flashing on the Pixel is like no other device. I'm new to the community and was confused as hell with the A Partion and B Partion flashing. Never ran into this before the Pixel, but im getting the hang of it...
