How to reinstall android on Sony X compact from sailfish? - Sony Xperia X Compact Questions & Answers

I just installed sailfish X on an Sony X compact and would like reinstall android again. At best I like to try AOSP pie if the play store is available.
I missed the the step to backup the TA partition.
How can I reinstall android? I am on a linux mashine and was wondering if there is a simple terminal based guide on how to reinstall stock andoid and then install android pie.

Flash TWRP if you don't have, then wipe system, data and cache. Then flash aosp zip from phone storage or sd card.

Inner working of a custom ROM / Kernel

To all the devs around here. Great work by the way!! Not that I wanna know all the technical details, but it would be nice to get an overview of how things work together on the GT.
I have a PC Windows and Linux background, but I don't fully understand as of yet how things blend together on the tab.
Can you explain a few things;
How come flashing a ROM doesn't wipe the entire system? Is a rom pretty much the same as a ghost image for PC?
How are system files (OS) differentiate with your media/videos for example.
If you install a custom kernel (see pershoot for example), will installing a rom overwrite the newly installed kernel, or do they reside in a different place on the disk? If so, can you explain.
How are things separated on the GTAB? Where is CWM installed, is it something similar to a PC bios that you flash with a custom bios?
The internal memory is split up (probably partitioned but it could be something else) into the system area and the user area that acts like the sd card does in most android devices. System files are in the system area, your media files are on the part acting like an sd card.
ROMs contain their own kernel which will overwrite your custom kernel but as long as the custom kernel is compatible with the ROM you can flash the custom kernel over the ROMs kernel. Im not sure if touchwiz and non-touchwiz need different kernels like htc sense.
I dont know where cwm is installed but its separate from the os.
That's a good start, but id love to hear more about the inner workings of everything. I don't want to know if X is compatible with Y. I just want to know how to work together and why A isnt overwriting B.
Wrong section buddy, go to the Q&A
i going to oversimplify this a bit to focus on the relevant portions of ROM flashing.
System partition - this is where the android operating system is installed. It contains the all of the files and apks for android to run. System apks are located here - stuff like the browser, gmail, contacts, calendar, etc. Just the apps are stored here, not their settings.
Boot partition - this is the kernel
Data partition - this is where all of your data is stored. Data includes all settings (including os settings like wifi passwords, brightness level, etc.), as well as any apps you have downloaded as well as their settings and data (example, the angry birds apk is here as well the angry birds data that contains your game progress.) Also the setting and data for the system apks mentioned above (like Gmail and the browser) are stored here.
Sdcard - on android phones this is a separate partition, but on tablets it is a pseudo partition - really just a folder on the data partition but treated like a separate partition most of the time.
When you flash a ROM without wiping anything you are just overwriting the system and boot partitions, that's why all of your data stays in tact.
Cool thanks, can someone describe how does the different options in CWM affect those partitions?
What is wiped when you do a factory reset? cache? and davlik?
I would also be interested in knbowing where does CWM resides.
Thanks

A factory reset in cwm wipes data and cache. Davlik cache is wiped separately through the advanced menu. You can also wipe system, data, cache, and sdcard in the mounts section of cwm.
Cwm is a replacement of the stock recovery partition that shipped on your tablet or phone.

questions before installing ROM

hello. I am having some questions before I install a new ROM to my Nook Color.
The device has already been rooted with CM10 by someone else, I am completely noob in this process So there goes:
1) the encore ROM files available on get.cm are made only for nook color?
2) can I downgrade to an older CM version afterwards, due to bad experience with it (ex: lag in applications...) ?
3) if I go to settings-apps and move all my applications to SD card will they still work after installing the new ROM ?
4) do I have to format the sd card that I put the zip ROM file on?
5) do I have to make a bootable sd card ?
6) is it recommended to format the system before I install the new ROM file? and how to do it ?
7) wipe data/factory reset means FORMAT ?
Thank you
These answers assume that the original person installed the CM10 to internal memory. If they installed it to an SD, you need different answers.
1. Encore means Nook Color, so all labeled with encore should work.
2. Yes, just flash the older one over the new one This assumes you continue to use CM10 not the new CM10.1. You do not want to mix CM10 and CM10.1.
3. Yes, as long as you don't wipe data/factory reset.
4. No, it can and should be put on your normal SD without formatting.
5. You either need a bootable CWM or TWRP SD or have one of them installed internally. You can tell if you have it installed internally by using the cyanoboot boot menu. Hold n on boot and choose emmc recovery and see if you get one of them.
6. It is not recommended to wipe /system. The CM rom zip does that for you.
7. Wipe data/factory reset means it formats a few partitions on internal (/cache, /data) and then removes any apps you installed to SD.

Will Not Install Gapps

I have just installed Blisspop rom and trying to install TKGapps. I have tried to install Full, mini and micro. I get not enough space to install and to run gapps-config.
How can I just clean out the /system/app folder so I can reinstall Bliss and then Gapps?
Is there a way to format the whole thing to remove everything, then reinstall Bliss (5.1.1) and gapps?
There is no way that I'm full up I have 12.28GB of space but it tells me that I don't. I'm getting really irritated.
Thanks in advance.
I'd advice go to recovery, clean everything, reinstall rom, then gapps
Otherwise, use file explorer to see if you"ve got the rom zip in internal (would take **** loads of storage)

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I have gone into recovery, done a full wipe, Cache, system, data, internal storage. I have also did the factory reset.
Then I flash said Rom, and then try to install Gapps. That's when the error come up in recovery installing gapps that not enough room in system to install and to use gapps-config to modify or remove unwanted programs.
I have used file manager to access root/system/app folder however im not sure what is safe to remove without causing havoc.
I will try your suggestion and get back.
Didyou do dalvik/ART too?

[Q] Easy way to downgrade from official Marshmallow 6.0.1 to Lollipop 5.02

Hi Folks
Running MM on my Galaxy S4 i9505 and have made a decision that I want to revert back to LL as I am having a few daily issues and really need the functionality working as when I was on a Lollipop ROM.
I also used Link2SD which too be honest has caused me no end of problems and I dont believe it has linkedApps successfully to the SD card as I have consuming space on my phone memory at an alarming rate.
I have a titanium backups sync in the cloud and have made a TWRP backup which is stored on my phone.
My approach was to do the following and really I just want to get feedback on this:
Copy Backup files to computer
Install 3.0 TWRP version or latest verison available
clean wipe of phone/Data/SD Card
Install chosen ROM and GAPPS and if necessary kernel
Connect to Google account and install requied apps from play store.
use TB to restore only data for chosen apps
As I am going a version back would there be an issues with this when restoring my User App data and other phone related stored in google such as WIFI, Bluetooth contacts etc.
Thanks
If there any issues just reinstall the app from the play store and restore data with titanium backup.
out of interest what is the best method to partition an external SDcard when not on MM ? I've used cronmod on an ancient wildfire but never considered it for my s4...

Moto X Play XT1562 Recovery

I have flashed the TWRP recovery on my Moto X Play.
I don't know what is this system image consisting approx. 3gb.
Even if i try to wipe all system , data , cache, internal, dalvik ,etc
there is still that weird stuff of 3gb approx. System image.
What is this even if there is no os install .
Is there any way to clear this to free up some memory.
Thank you!
this is backup. system image is your system files. like windows - if you use format you lost system. if you need install other rom you must delete system image
