questions before installing ROM - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello. I am having some questions before I install a new ROM to my Nook Color.
The device has already been rooted with CM10 by someone else, I am completely noob in this process So there goes:
1) the encore ROM files available on get.cm are made only for nook color?
2) can I downgrade to an older CM version afterwards, due to bad experience with it (ex: lag in applications...) ?
3) if I go to settings-apps and move all my applications to SD card will they still work after installing the new ROM ?
4) do I have to format the sd card that I put the zip ROM file on?
5) do I have to make a bootable sd card ?
6) is it recommended to format the system before I install the new ROM file? and how to do it ?
7) wipe data/factory reset means FORMAT ?
Thank you

These answers assume that the original person installed the CM10 to internal memory. If they installed it to an SD, you need different answers.
1. Encore means Nook Color, so all labeled with encore should work.
2. Yes, just flash the older one over the new one This assumes you continue to use CM10 not the new CM10.1. You do not want to mix CM10 and CM10.1.
3. Yes, as long as you don't wipe data/factory reset.
4. No, it can and should be put on your normal SD without formatting.
5. You either need a bootable CWM or TWRP SD or have one of them installed internally. You can tell if you have it installed internally by using the cyanoboot boot menu. Hold n on boot and choose emmc recovery and see if you get one of them.
6. It is not recommended to wipe /system. The CM rom zip does that for you.
7. Wipe data/factory reset means it formats a few partitions on internal (/cache, /data) and then removes any apps you installed to SD.

Want to change ROM but confused about a few things.

Hi.
After getting my HD2 last week I tentatively but successfully flashed my first ROM, which was the Rafdroid 4.0.2.
I had correct radio.
I installed HSPL 2.08.
I installed MAGLDR 1.13
I got the Rafdroid ZIP file
Prepared SD card with Primary Partition and 1GB ext3 partition.
Downloaded the 400MB CWM partition and flashed to HD2
Then installed the Rafdroid Zip from SD card via CWM.
Everything seemed to go fine and I've been using the Rafdroid for a week. But now I want to try a new ROM, specifically the NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.7 ROM.
Now I'am a bit unsure on how best to proceed still being new to the world of NAND. A few things in the Nexus ROM thread confuse me.
Installing CWM_Recovery_for_NexusHD2 (135MB system and 2MB cache)
Does this mean I need to reflash to CWM partiton size 1.3v 150MB? I'm unsure what the 2MB cache means.
Enter ClockworkMod Recovery when you're on MAGLDR 1.13 (hold "Power" button during boot) and select "AD Recovery" or "Boot AD SD" (if ever copied CWM's initrd.gz and zImage to SD).
The first part of this I understand but I don't know what the bold bit is. Do I need to copy these files to my sd card? I didn't do anything like this when I flashed Rafdoid.
Thanks for your time. Hopefully a few pointers can get me on my way
Yes, reflash cwm but with a different partition layout.
(look in cwm folder find flash.cfg, open it in notepad, you will see the numbers to change)
The bit in bold - ignore that, there are two types of cwm, one that installs to the nand, like you have, and one that runs from sd, so ignore the sd bit.
So,
Into magldr,,
usb flashing,,,
flash the new layout with the sizes the rom suggests, (you can tinker with your own sizes as you get used to changing, it's the system size that is important, a few meg bigger than the unzipped size of the system folder in the rom.zip)
When that completes, back into magldr,
Ad recovery (option 8 I think) to boot cwm, and flash the rom.
You can set the system size to what you like, so long as it is bigger than the roms system folder, but anything over is wasted, it doesn't count towards internal storage, so if the rom says 135 and you flash 150 layout, there is 15meg wasted space. (that being said, 150 is a good size to use, since quite a few roms use that or smaller,, sense free roms will mostly all fit in 150 layouts,) meaning you can switch between them without flashing cwm again. Also means you can restore cwm backups from any of them into that layout, so you can set one up, take backup, flash another, take backup, flash a third, then any time restore either of the backups.
Use flash.cfg to change partition.. Btw. I read in NexusHD rom topic you need to flash 135MB system and 2MB cache.
About the second problem:
Just make sure you have zipped rom on your sd card, enter MAGLDR, select AD Recovery and flash zip.
I think the second way is possible if you manually copy those files, never tried it.
Hi Sam and volv.
Many thanks for taking the time to answer my queries!
Should I get rid of the Rafdroid sd card layout and just re format the card to FAT32? I don't think I'll be going back to it.
Another thing about the backup - where are they stored - in the NAND memory or on the sd card for loading back into NAND?
Everything else you've posted has been very clear and super helpful. I'll definitely be a lot more confident at flashing the ROM tomorrow!
Thank you.

Hi,
Before starting anything,BACKUP YOUR STUFF.
Go to ad recovery>backup and restore and make a backup of your current system and data. This is stored on your sd card in clockworkmod/backup.
Next ,flash your new partition.
Then go to ad recovery and wipe data, cache partition, and dalvik(advanced)
Then go back and choose install zip from sd card(having placed your new ROM zip on the root of your sd card using a card reader)
Most roms support using the ext partition, so definitely keep it.
Before you flash, in cwm, do a 'wipe data/factory reset','wipe cache', and then 'advanced - wipe dalvik cache'. This will clear out the data and such from the previous rom, so no need to format it. (there may be some leftover folders from certain apps in the fat32 partition, you can manually delete them as and if necessary, shouldnt cause any problems)
backups get saved to the sd card, in a folder called clockwork, so be sure and back that up if you plan on formatting your sd card.
Hi again.
I just want to say the flash went like clockwork (no pun intended ) The NexusHD ROM has a really nice feel to it. Its my first taste of stock Android and I like it.
I was going to sell the HD2 and keep my old Hero, but I'm not so sure now after trying NEXUS HD ROM.
Hmmn decisions decisions.
Once again thanks for all your help. It definitely filled in the missing blanks.
Ta Ta
you can use every flash.cfg and change the values to the needet. Run the flash tool and after that flash the zip via recovery

[Q] What can be done to eMMC from CM7 SD install?

I'm running CM7 off of an SD card. I believe if I flash CWM Recovery from ROM Manager, it will flash it onto the eMMC ... is that correct?
Also, if I update the su binary from within Superuser apk, will it update it on the SD or eMMC?
Also, what would happen if I formatted SD from within CM7? Would it format the WHOLE SD or just the FAT32 partition that CM7 sees as the SD card?
My Nookcolor is not rooted or modified at all. I've never booted into the stock rom to be exact.
Thanks for the help.

You are right, flashing from ROM Manager puts it on emmc. And flashing things from CWM recovery normally flashes things to emmc. There are special modified versions of CWM that will flash things to SD, but I'm sure you don't have one of those. If you are interested in getting one that you put on SD so that you can backup your system, etc, just search for alternate CWM recovery and my name. I posted a version. (Edit: look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22719241)
Updating su will put it on the system you are running at the time.
I think formatting the SD will format the whole card, if not at least your boot partition. I would not try it. You can put it in your PC and use partition software to format just partition 4 if you want just that sdcard partition cleared.

[Q] Update your TRIPLE-BOOT SD Card for nook color

First of all a big THANKS! I successfully installed the triple boot SD Card. I see there is an update with a new zip file. As a newby I want to make sure I understand correctly: I will burn the zip img to a clean SD Card, install it, power up, and basically follow the steps previously including flashing the gapps, etc. I can then copy anything I have in the old SD Card 7th partition to the new 7th partition. Is that correct? I am asking to make sure I don't just copy something into the existing partitions on the existing SD Card.
When I updated racks triple boot, i did not reinstall Gapps. Just reloaded everything from my Titanium bu and there it all was.
Thanks
Thanks, that is a good idea. May I ask, did you use your existing SD Card and put the zip on the 7th partition and use a blank formatted SD Card. I just wonder if the zip will create new partitions or simply overwrite the existing files in the existing partitions.

You don't need a blank formatted card. The zip overwrites files in the existing partitions on your current SD but doesn't create new ones. Nothing on the 7th partition (the SD partition) is affected, nor are your downloaded market apps in the /data partitions. Personally, I have created a folder in the emmc for all the flashable zips. The CWM recovery allows you to install the zips from the internal sd (emmc) instead of the sd sd (7th partition). That way, I can flash zips to a backup or test sd, and flash to my working sd if everthing's OK.
Thanks again
Thanks once again. Those are good ideas and I will use them also. I may have been over-thinking the update but this is all new to me. Thanks again.
Can I add my inquisition to this thread as well? It is exactly what I was wondering....
I have spent a few up and running using the Triple Boot directions found here. Everything has been rock solid.
Now I'm interested in upgrading. Just wanted to make sure I understood this correctly:
1. Since the image I flashed is dated 3/4/12. then does it have all of the changes up to then already baked in? If not....
2. I don't need to do incremental updates, correct? I can just flash the newest images, right?
3. Since the primary (and I believe secondary as well) ROMs have been changed, I need to "boot into the CWM that is included with the dualbootSD and go to "mounts and storage" and choose to format "/system1" "/data1". Remember to also wipe cache."
4. I will need to reinstall all of the following?: gapp and the calendar-email-tts fix even if installing the latest release
Thanks so much. Loving what I've been able to do so far...but just had too many questions to proceed forward with any degree of confidence.
Thanks!

Although a newby I think I can help as I went through the same process. Of course this applies only to Racks triple boot option and how I have done it.
1) What he is doing is upgrading the complete zip file with the most current files so it is complete as in the first install. You could actually install it following the original install instructions.
2) Correct
3) No, it will overwrite any existing files in the partitions with the new, upgraded files.
4) If you have used Titanium to back up your apps and data(which I recommend) - Titanium is one of the apps Racks includes - then no. Once you boot up, etc and have everything running you can run Titanium to restore your apps and data.
Remember that if you update only from the zip you will only have those apps and data that were included originally. Your SDCard partition will remain unchanged so if you have apps/data on that partition then those will simply have to be reloaded/restored.
Hope this helps.
Great...had to give you a "Thanks".
I figured he was updating the original install to include newest upgraded files. Maybe the DualBoot image is not 100% updated? (The image I just installed was dated 3/4, but there are updates dated 3/6 and 3/26). Not sure if I should update those or not.
The file I installed was Mirage_CM7_ICS_CM9_DualbootSD.img.zip dated 3/4/12. I have not yet installed any updated.
Thanks for the additional info. I actually didn't have anything of consequence up to this point as I just decided to do a fresh install on a new 8GB Sandisk card with slightly better random write speeds than the old 4GB card. No data of consequence will be lost, but I will look into Titanium for the future upgrades.
Thanks!
Nice. Did the updates, but had to reinstall gapps. Will try titanium next time. Loving being able to mess around with ICS. Will have to play around as I get more time.
One last question....I only downloaded and updated the mirage CM7 and Encore CM9 files.
I did not update and encore MIUI files, as, if I understand this correctly, this will take the place of my current mirage CM7 boot image...so I will have this brand new interface.
With the Triple boot, you get a flavor of ICS, but you need to choose whether you waint either "CM7 mirage" or "MIUI". And if I choose MIUI...I need to decide whether I want ICS or GB. Is that about right?
Thanks.
Thanks!

Can't write to internal EMMC

Hi,
I have a nook that I rooted and put a custom rom on back about a year and a half ago. I flashed the ROM to the internal EMMC and CWM 3.2.0.1 was flashed as recovery. If it makes any difference it was a CM9 ROM
Now here's where I'm at. I can run ROMs off the sd-card but they are not stable at all. I get a whole bunch of force closes and such.
When I try and flash a new ROM to the internal EMMC it says it completes, but nothing changes. It is still the previous ROM. When I try and format the /data and /system partitions with the EMMC recovery, it doesn't complete. It says there is an error. When I format with TWRP off an sd card, it says it completes but once again, the rom is not wiped.
I've tried the 8 reboot error method, and it never gets to the stock recovery screen. It keeps booting to the EMMC ROM.
I've tried repartioning the EMMC with leapinlar's zip files. It says it successfully completes, but once again nothing changes.
Ideally I'd like to get the emmc back to stock and try and run a rom off the sdcard.
I've read the threads that I thought were applicable to my issues, but nothing seemed to work. I'm completely out of ideas. Anyone have similar issues or can provide some guidance?
Thanks.
The problem you are having running a ROM from SD is the brand and speed of SD you are using. It needs to be SanDisk class 4.
The reason the 8 failed boot does not work is you replaced the stock recovery with CWM. It needs the stock recovery to be able to complete. See my NC tips thread linked in my signature and read item A12. Assuming you can get it to flash, I have a stock recovery zip there.
I don't understand why the ROMs are not flashing. You say it gives errors when you try to wipe with CWM. What do the errors say? You used the internal CWM and TWRP on SD, but none worked. Try my bootable CWM SD to see if that helps.
I don't understand why my partition zips did not work. I know the newest TWRP will not flash them without giving an error 2 message. Try my bootable CWM SD.

Thanks for the advice...
I've been using a Patriot class 10 micro sd to run the roms/attempt to flash new roms. Its worked fine before, but I'll try and pickup another one from someplace.
When I try and format /system and /data from the emmc CWM it says "Error formatting /system" or "error formatting /data" after working away for about 5 minutes
Here's what i did:
Created CWM 6.0.1.2 Bootable SD
- Flashed NookColor-emmc-stockrecovery.zip
- Message said successfull.
- tried to restart and old CWM recovery 3.2.0.1 was still installed
Booted into CWM 6.0.1.2 Bootable SD Recovery
- mounted /system and /data
- attempted to format
- Message "Done." for both
- attempted to flash stock 1.4.3 that you have modified for CWM
- install from sdcard complete
- reboot
- Old CynanogenMod bootscreen and old rom still installed.
Using same CWM 6.0.1.2 Bootable Sd Recovery
-flashed NookColor-emmc-repair-partitions-1-4-5-6-7-8.zip and NookColor-emmc-format-partitions-5-6-7.zip
-said success
-attempted to flash stock 1.4.3
- nothing changed. Old rom still installed
One more thing I noticed:
Everytime I login to the currently flashed rom, any changes I make are never saved. For example, if i install an apk or uninstall an app, the next time i can successfully boot into the emmc ROM, those changes are reversed to the previous version. Could it be that the current rom is being stored somewhere and being reflashed when it tries to bootup?
I hate to say this, but it sounds like your internal embedded card has become read only. I have had this happen to SDs but not to emmc. The apps act like they are writing and if you leave the folder and come back, they are not there. It is like they are writing to a ramdisk instead of your SD. You might try booting to a ROM on SD and see if you can write to any of the internal partitions like /cache or /rom and see if they stick. If not, you may only be able to run off SD and maybe not even then. You might have to change your dalvik cache setting on SD so it uses /data instead of /cache.

I tried copying a file to the emmc partition from twrp and it didn't persist after reboot... so it looks like the emmc is set to read only. I don't supposed I can change that using adb and/or software solutions right? It's a hardware issue?
Any guidance on how to change davlik cache to use /data instead of /cache? I'll be happy to get any sort of stable rom running off any SD card.
I was hoping to repurpose the nook as in in car tablet to tether a data connection to my phone and play music and such.
Thanks for your help. I appreciate you taking the time.

I don't know of anything that can revive it. I never could revive my SD that that happened to.
To make your ROM on SD use /data for all of the dalvik cache, create a file in /data named local.prop. In that file put this line:
dalvik.vm.dexopt-data-only=1
Next time it boots the system file portion of dalvik cache will be on /data along with the installed app portion.
Sent from my stock Nook HD+ using XDA Premium
I now have a stable version of CM 7.2 running off the SD card. I put the davlik cache on the data partition and everything seems to be running pretty smooth.
I'll keep messing around seeing if there is anything to revive the internal emmc, but at least I can use the nook off the SD card again.
Thanks for helping me troubleshoot and figure this out. Cheers.

Which ROM

Hi All,
I want to root my HD nook today, if anyone can guide me to the appropriate ROM/Image/GAAPS/anything else I need will be appreciated.
I want to install the Hybrid version on my nook - my software version is 2.0.6.
I am planning to follow the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37578234 (Diogenes5 post). He provides links to which roms but don't know which ones to download.
Any other assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You can either use stock to download the CM10.1 zip directly to the internal SD or connect the USB cable with stock booted and use the cable to copy the file from your PC to the internal SD.
Once the file is on the internal SD, you can boot to the SD again and use the "install zip from SD/choose zip from internal memory" option.
And my files are attached to the post he quoted (my HD+ Hybrid thread linked in my signature) and instructions are there to. I have a section there devoted to the HD Hybrid.

I am really sorry to be so dense about this. I copied the ROM and the GAAPS to the Internal SD, I didn't put it inside any particular folder. Now when I boot the nook back up, choosing install zip from SD/Internal memory - it asks choose which zip to apply - i do not see the ROM zip and the GAAPS zip.
Did I need to extract the Flashable ROM zip and copy those files to the internal SD or the copying the entire folder is fine?
What am I missing....

I don't remember exactly how bokbokan did his CWM internal memory. You may have to look in a folder named /media.
And keep the zips intact.

I'll attempt to describe this to you as easy as possible, and hopefully you should have your Nook ready in minutes. It doesn't take too much effort or time; mainly waiting for install requires time, other than that it's a quick process. It's not difficult either; the more you believe it is difficult, the more it will be.
I'll start from the beginning; and you go can go from there.
1. Download the latest ROM for your Nook HD (this is a hummingbird variation) from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063968
The latest version is, as of today (CTRL + F in your browser, then paste the first line of the following quote to find it easily):
cm-10.1-20130418-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird *** NEWEST ***
MD5: 26dcb32d40fdcf7779ac0d34843c4404
Click to collapse
2. Now you need to download the latest ClockWorkMod Recovery for your Nook (to install the ROM). Once you download it, you must also download the latest update file. Download CWM & the Update from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2097731
The latest version of CWM + the update, as of today:

Click to collapse
update-20130221.zip

Download both these from the link on step two (above; in this paragraph).
3. You optionally can install Gapps too; which I would recommend to access all of Google Services, including the Play Store. So download it from here: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
4. Let's get started! First, if you have a Windows machine, download WinDiskReader32 (click). This is to burn the CWM .img to your SD card. Now plug in your SD card into your PC. Extract the CWM files, it was downloaded in step 2. You should have a single file with the extension .img. Load up WinDiskImager, select the CWM file, and also select the drive which your SD card is inserted into. Make sure you do not overwrite any other drive (i.e. C drive), as you will wipe out your whole PC OS. Then hit the "Write" button on WinDiskImager. Your SD card will now have CWM installed (and your SD will be partitioned. This is fine, and you should only see around ~160MB on your SD card; again this is perfectly normal).
5. After burning CWM to your SD card, extract the update file (also downloaded in step two) directly into your SD card. So basically, extract the update file into your SD card, and it will ask if you want to overwrite any existing files, confirm this.
6. Connect your Nook to your PC, whilst on the stock B&N ROM and in MTP mode (if you don't know what MTP is, most likely you haven't changed it, so your can ignore it). Once plugged in. Transfer the ROM file you downloaded in step 1, and Gapps which you downloaded in step 3 to your Nook's "Internal Storage". Transfer the ROM & Gapps (DO NOT EXTRACT THESE FILES, JUST COPY THEM TO YOUR SD CARD) to your Nook HD's internal storage via PC. Once fully transferred, move onto the next step.
7. Turn your Nook off. Eject your SD card from your PC. Place the SD card into your Nook. Turn on your device. At this point, your Nook will constantly restart as it sets up your SD card (don't touch it at this point, let it do it's thing). After a while, you should be booted into CWM. This is when the process of setting up the SD card has been complete.
8. In CWM, select "install .zip from SD card", then select "install .zip from internal sd card". Locate and install the ROM. This may take some time. Once complete, locate and install the Gapps file.
9. This isn't mentioned in the original setup, or anywhere else, but I would recommend that you fix the permission of your Nook HD now, as a fresh install before you proceed to use it. Go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233688 and start from Section 5 on the link, once done, return to this thread, then move onto the next step here.
10. Optionally (if you don't want to install, skip to step 11), now you can install a patch by leapinlar. For example, if you boot into CyanogenMod, you cannot use your internal storage. You can only use your SD card. However, if you would like to use your internal storage when in CyanogenMod, install this fix by leapinlar:
NookHD-HDplus-Hybrid-SDSwap-for CM10-10.1-rev2-(03.09.13).zip

From: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38153094#post38153094 If you install this fix, your internal storage will be used instead of your SD card (this is a bonus for those who are using 2GB SD cards, since they're limited on storage). After this fix, all your apps and everything will treat the internal storage as it's default native storage space.
11. Go to the root menu on ClockWorkMod Recovery, and select "reboot system now". Your tablet will now reboot into CyanogenMod perfectly.
You are good to go. All the best.

I don't remember exactly how bokbokan did his CWM internal memory. You may have to look in a folder named /media.
And keep the zips intact.

It is in Media - so I installed the ROM but my fat fingers clicked something else before I can wipe cache etc. I still need to install GAAPS and your files.
How do I get back to the menu structure that enables me to clear cashe and install from internal sd?

Power Button: To go up one menu, for example if you go into "Advanced", to return to the original menu, you simple press the power key.
Volume Up/Down: These two keys are for navigation purposes, allowing you to scroll up or down the menu respectively. Use these keys to highlight your option.
Home/'n' Button: This is to select the current option, for example, if you're currently hovered over "Reboot system now", and press the 'n' key, your tablet would reboot.
Use the power button.

You mean once you have left CWM and booted to CM10, how do you get back to CWM recovery? Reboot and hold the n key. A boot menu will pop up. Follow the directions there to get to CWM recovery.

Since you wiped it after installing Gapps, there's no need to do it again; as it won't make a difference. But if you want to, simply boot into recovery.
On a Nook HD, to boot into the recovery. Turn off your Nook, and using the boot menu select CWM. Or, if you prefer, follow the guide here from Step 3 to 5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233688

What is hanging at 99%? Stock? You should not be booting to stock, you should be booting to SD and selecting CWM recovery in the boot menu.

Use the boot menu to get to stock. To get to CM10 from rooted stock, install an app from Play Store named Quick Boot by Sirius Applications. You can use that to tell it to reboot. If you do not have stock rooted, you must power off and back on.

I downloaded the app - when I go into bootloader from the app, the nook reboots and hangs at 99%.
I do believe I rooted the nook and installed CM10 because I was able to go to play store and download the app.
