I have flashed the TWRP recovery on my Moto X Play.
I don't know what is this system image consisting approx. 3gb.
Even if i try to wipe all system , data , cache, internal, dalvik ,etc
there is still that weird stuff of 3gb approx. System image.
What is this even if there is no os install .
Is there any way to clear this to free up some memory.
Thank you!
this is backup. system image is your system files. like windows - if you use format you lost system. if you need install other rom you must delete system image

I'm thinking about wiping my Nook since I can't get WiFisleep to work anymore. But what will happen to all my books and comics stored on the EMMC then? I'm running cyanogen 7 from the internal memory with no traces of BN(the first thing you get when you boot is a small cyanogen logo). Do I have to back all those files up?
If you wipe data and Dalvik you most likely lose those files (depending on where you have stored this files to save). I would suggest backing them up to your uSD to be safe for now.

Wiping Davlik will not delete those files. I wipe it every time I upgrade to a higher nightly. In fact, it is all that I wipe. The real question is will an update or reflash solve the problem? If it were me, I would flash an update using ROM Manager, wiping Davlik and including gaaps in the update. If that does not solve the issue I would then start from scratch since a system wipe will be needed. However, backing up the apps first using Titanium Backup (but not system settings) will get you back after the new flash.
pat is right, wipe Dalvik doesn't touch files but skeeter also right as wipe /data, everything most likely gone with the wind

Wiping /data will indeed wipe all downloaded applications and their associated settings but I think the OP is referring to media files stored on the emmc partition and this will not be touched by a data, system or cache wipe, just like SD card contents won't be touched.
I store some basic media files on internal emmc making use of about 4GB spare capacity. This gets scanned as well as the stuff stored on SD.
HI there people, just a n00b question, after flashing a custom rom in my i9500 (wanam lite v1.8) i see all my previous configurations, data, installed apps (including bloatware) are still on my phone, is this the normal condition? i mean....when u flash a custom rom previous apps and data keeps on the phone??? or im missing something (like cleaning cache or something)?? i just followed the custom's rom developer guide (download rom, backup current firmware, flash custom rom, enjoy) I supposed a new installation of all system's components was performed when flashing....any info will be appreciated.. thanks
Did you flash via Odin or Recovery?

1) Download ROM and put it in the SD card.
2) Make a backup.
3) Wipe Data Factory.
4) Wipe cache partition.
5) Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik Cache.
6) Mount and storage -> Format Data
7) Mount and storage -> Format Cache
8) Mount and storage -> Format System

1). It DOES matter... You are wiping internal storage... What are you gonna flash when the rom on the internal storage is wiped with ALL the other Data?
it a special feature of the ROM ur trying to install..... wannam 1.8 says - no wipe - hence it only wipes dalvik and regular cache - all the user data is preserved, like apps, contact, sms , etc, etc, - you wouldn't even need a backup when moving to wannam 1.8 ROM.
if u want to start from a clean system i recommend using the Super.Wipe (its comes available on the Phoenix ROM thread)
Cheers

With Clockwork Recovery you don't touch the internal storage, unless you use "Mount and Storage -> Format Internal SD" ( or something like that ).

Unless you really try - you won't format the internal SD with CWM. the clean cache is a command that cleans the OS partition - but if you'll format the internal SD you'll loose all data and apps
infact - what are you trying to do? do you want to completely wipe your device?
Thanks to all for your answers........finally i perform a new clean installation, wiping all data and cache and formating all the /data, /cache, /preload, including internal sdcard (moving rom to external sdcard first of course) and next flashing WanamLite using CMW.
By the way, i was wonder about i9500 suppose to be a 16 GB (internal memory) phone, however......even with a new clean installation internal memory its just about 8.77 GB, am not talking about free space (wich is 6.9 GB now after clean install), the whole internal memory capacity is just 8.77 GB!!! so what about the other 7.x GB in this model???
Hello,
I was recently mucking around with custom recoveries on my Motorola Defy Mini XT320, and deleted some system applications to make some room on the /system directory. Unfortunately, one of those apps was the standard Clock app that came with the phone, and I'd become quite attached to that widget.
I was wondering, is there any way to restore deleted system apps/widgets after they've been deleted from the /system directory?
Cheers,
Welshie
Ext undelete
Undeletion on Ext3/Ext4 filesystem (the one your phone use) is not a trivial task and AFAIK there is nothing like this in recovery. You may always reflash your phone with the same version of the system formware you already have. This should not harm your data. Try do just wipe cache and Dalvik cache. Do not do factory reset, as it deletes /data where all the updates and personal data are. Also don't go between Slim/CM/Stock firmware as they probably have different partition layout so you loose your data anyway. So do nandroid backum in recovery first (your data, not the system). Then flash. You may restore your data then. Next time, do nandroid backup (in recovery) of the system before you make changes
Hi, I'm new to the android world. I read some tutorials about rooting switching custom roms and stuff, but one thing is not clear enogh.
If I'm using teamwin recovery and backing up the phone, where the backup is actually saved? How is that when I'm wiping the device the backup is not deleted with the other files on the device?
If I'm checking the data box and cache box what it saves?
Sorry for bad english..
Thanks!!
In recovery mode you will see " backup " and restore " , backup will create a save of your phone , in case you brick it or had a bad flash you can restore everything ( data , system... )

/system is where the ROM is installed. You want to wipe that when installing ROMs.
/data if where apps you install from the Play Store are kept, and where your apps keep their data and settings and whatnot. If you don't wipe this when installing a newer version of the same ROM, then all your apps and data are kept. This is called a "dirty flash".
/cache is where apps and the Dalvik VM keep things temporarily to speed things up later. You can wipe this at any time without causing issues.
/sdcard is the "internal storage" for the user. This is where your camera stores it's pictures, where your media player stores music, where your downloads are kept. This is your storage. When installing ROMs, do *NOT* wipe this! If you do wipe it, you won't be able to install anything as there will be no files to read from!
/ext-sd is s folder that represents an external Micro SD card, if your phone supports that feature. Works similar to /sdcard.
So, to do a "clean install" or a "full wipe", you format /system, /data, and /cache.
To do a "dirty flash" you format just /system and /cache.

Hello.
My question is clear, what will be deleted when I wipe system partition?
Also will the apps & their data will be deleted too?
Anything installed on the system partition. Basically, the entire OS.

I got this, I'm upgrading from crdroid v2.4 to v2.5 ..
But will this wipe delete other apps like Facebook & games...etc
Wiping /system removes Android from the device. Your apps and data are in /data, which is another partition. That is untouched unless you perform a factory reset.
