Up and down speed comparison vs Pixel 3XL - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Coming from a Pixel 3XL I was concerned about download speeds since the phone was optimized for TMobile and not specifically Verizon.
Did 4 tests on LTE in the same spot in my house and was getting an average of 24 Mbps down and 12 Mbps up on the Pixel 3XL. The 6T is averaging 10Mbps down and 9 Mbps up.
Overall the 6T seems much faster so I'm not sure what this test really means for real world use. At this point I'm pretty happy with the 6T.
A few people asked for comparisons so I wanted to post my results.

So you are saying the Pixel 3 XL records a higher speed but the 6T feels faster than the 3XL?

Only the T-Mobile version is optimized for T-Mobile. The unlocked version that works on Verizon is not optimized for T-Mobile.

Thanks for clarifying, that def makes sense.
I tried my 6T against my wife's Pixel 2 side by side last night and in every test the 6T was faster!!

i have the pixel 2 xl and did the same test as you, for curiosity of course. 6t beat the pixel by a lot...download pixel 1.66 Vs 7.85 on the 6t

I went to the gym just now and tested it. Usually I get terrible reception there. Got some of the highest speeds I've ever seen!!!!

"optimized" for T-Mobile is a ridiculous marketing ploy
I've had the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 5T, and my wife's OnePlus 6 all on T-Mobile. Here's my numbers at my house on T-Mobile with my "non-optimzied" OnePlus 6T unlocked direct from OnePlus.
Factory ROM no tweaks other than an adblocker...looks to work okay for me...
VoLTE, VoWiFI just like my previous OnePlus devices...
109Mbit down
24Mbit up
19ms ping
Non-opitimzied my butt...

S7 vs Pixel?

Has anyone had the opportunity to compare these two phones in daily usage?
Interested in perspectives on things like performance, battery life, screen....
Galaxy S7 eats the Google Pixel for breakfast. Had them both and S7 its way superior. I got rid of the Pixel and kept the S7.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk
Personally, I'd go with the Pixel.
I have the S7 Edge. My wife has a Pixel XL, she had a Nexus 6P before that and a N6 before that. Before the S7 I had a Nexus 6, and before that an S2 then S4. All that to say I'm pretty familiar with both Samsung and Google phones.
I left the N6 for the S7 primarily for the camera and hardware upgrades. At first I didn't mind the slow updates from AT&T. It irritated me how quickly my wife's N6P got Nougat, but I still preferred the speed and camera of my S7.
Once she got her Pixel XL, though, I went into immediate regret mode and wish I'd waited. That's easy to say in retrospect, of course.
Battery wise, her Pixel easily outlasts my S7. She can go a couple of days without a recharge, mine has to be recharged once during the day and at night. Our usage patterns are similar enough that it's not a factor.
Performance is about equal from a user experience standpoint. I don't perceive one as being faster than the other. I don't know how the technical specs compare.
The camera on the Pixel is sick. The detail and color it picks up easily outpaces the S7's, and the S7 has an excellent camera. I'd say as of this post the Pixel's camera is the one to beat.
The Pixel is obviously easy to root and flash, I know that from my N6 days. I didn't think I'd miss that, but I do.
I rather like the TouchWiz UI but after a while that stopped making up for the slow GUI updates from Samsung/AT&T.
Just my $.02, might be an unpopular opinion in this forum.
Has the Pixel been released for AT&T? I thought it was a verizon exclusive.

It's a Google phone, works with any Carrier, just has to be bought outright
One thing the Pixel will currently not do is WIFI calling on AT&T which is a show stopper for me. Once you get used to this feature it is hard to go back.

Oneplus 5 vs the pixel xl?

Deciding which to try next. Coming from a s8, always trying different phones.
Heard great things about both, any users have used both? How do the experiences differ in real world use age which is smoother/better etc..
Not trying to create a flame thread.
Had a Pixel XL for a little while. OnePlus 5 seems like an upgrade. Games load faster and play smoother. Also, more RAM is a huge plus for me. Also, I love the physical he button and capacative back/apps buttons.
Pixels camera took better photos.
Both are smooth in UI.
Pixel XL2 is announced in a couple of days... that should be your comparison.
I'm in the same boat I can get a NIB Google Pixel XL 128gb for $400 or a Oneplus 5 128gb or go for the motherload at almost 1k for the Google Pixel XL 2 128gb...I'm going to wait for the latter but regardless a tough decision for me. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.
The OnePlus 5 would be the obvious choice. Newer hardware, more RAM.
Why pay the same money for an older phone?
And I honestly doubt there's anything on the Pixel 2 that makes it worth paying an extra $500 for it.
I had a Pixel XL before buying the OP5. The Pixel XL takes much better pictures than the OP5 and offers a smoother overall experience than the OP5. The biggest problem for me with the Pixel XL is that the phone runs way too hot and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. Search for the official Google Pixel Support page (not the fanboy threads on XDA) and look at the posts. Those phones are dying right and left and the phone isn't even a year old yet. The Pixel XL is another Google flagship phone like the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P before it that seems to be designed so it won't last much longer than the warranty.
Thanks guys, was able to get the onep5 64 GB 6 GB variant for 500 Canadian dollars. Great condition dude barely used it and went back to iOS. This phone after taxes new cost over 700 and I pocketed about 200 dollars.
Only had this for a few minutes now so I'll report back in a few days but it already seems smoother then my s8

In your opinion, is the OP6T an upgrade?

I could get the OP6T for quite cheap if I traded in my Pixel 2 XL. I am just wondering if that would be a mistake that I would eventually regret, or whether it's a definite upgrade from the 2 XL. I really like the 2 XL, but with so many ecstatic reviews on the OP6T I am wondering if I am missing something great. What do you guys think?
You're going to regret it, but not now, probably when the next developer preview comes out in march or when the new galaxy S10 gets announced. As much as the 6T looks like a cool device, its barely an upgrade.

If you care about camera and day 1 updates wouldn't bother. Although I owned a Pixel XL and OP3 and I preferred the OP3 due to costing only £309 vs the £719 or the Pixel XL, Almost the same hardware and a ton of developer support.
Pros:
-Gorilla Glass 6 (versus 5 on 2 XL)
-Snapdragon 845 (+0.45 ghz clock speed versus 835 in 2 XL)
-6-8 gb ram (versus 4 gb)
-3700 mAh battery (versus 3520 mAh battery)
-Faster charging (max 20W versus 10.5W)
Cons:
-2 XL camera seems to be better based on early reviews
-No water resistance certification ("trust us, it's resistant" isn't good enough for me)
-Notch, although in my opinion this is the least ugly notch of any phone yet. It's almost attractive.
-Slower updates
-Probably a shorter update lifetime
-USB-C 2.0 (versus 3.1 in 2 XL)
-Supports proprietary quick charging instead of USB-PD
-lower ppi (402 versus 538)
-front finger print scanner placement (this is not my preference. I think the 2 XL placement is perfect, but that's just me.)
So is it an upgrade? Yes, in some ways. Is it worth an upgrade from a 2 XL? Absolutely not, in my opinion. If I'm going to throw away the 3 years of the fastest Android updates you can get that I paid for, and exchange it for updates that are slower and less numerous, it's going to be for something a lot better than this.
op6t is a downgrade. just that simple ?
6t owners are gonna be stuck when-
1. 5G tech phones are gonna pop up everywhere starting feb march.
2. Even OP is gonna ditch this old '2 step' fingerprint scanner ( which is not consistent, quick and as secure) for the Ultrasonic/3D scanner that'll be intro'd by s10 and will most defintly be in OP7.
3. And NO LED Notif light. For the love of God OnePlus. Companies like Vivo have incorporated even an infrared sensor in that teardrop notch for face unlock in the dark and you couldn;t find space for THAT
I'm sort of tempted honestly. If my p2xl had taken a beating I would probably jump on the TMO deal
OnePlus camera is good enough for me and the extra ram and the super active dev community are major advantages.
OP6T is a nice phone. And since I've used OPO, OP3T and my wife has OP5T - one thing I can definitely say about OnePlus, it's a great phone and definitely the best OS in my opinion.
But if you have a Pixel 2 XL already, and moving to OP6T - You'll loose a 2K screen, way superior camera quality, front speakers ... And that's about it I guess. If it was a exchange for no extra money, I'd take it, but if I need to pay extra, meh, doesn't make that much sense.

I'd like to amend your Pros Cons list:
Pros:
-Smoother OS with a few added features
-Gorilla Glass 6 (versus 5 on 2 XL)
-Snapdragon 845 (+0.45 ghz clock speed versus 835 in 2 XL)
-6-8 gb ram (versus 4 gb)
-3700 mAh battery (versus 3520 mAh battery)
-Faster charging (max 20W versus 10.5W)
-Slightly bigger screen (6.4" vs 6")
-It's a fresh change after being on Google stock OS for 5+ years
Cons:
-2 XL camera is definitely better specially with the new pixel 3 camera APK
-No front facing speakers, a single tiny bottom firing speaker
-No water resistance certification ("trust us, it's resistant" isn't good enough for me)
-Notch, although in my opinion this is the least ugly notch of any phone yet. It's almost attractive.
-Slower updates although they might extend past the updates for the 2XL (unsure we'll have to wait and see)
-USB-C 2.0 (versus 3.1 in 2 XL)
-Supports proprietary quick charging instead of USB-PD
-lower resolution screen (1080 x 2280 vs 2880×1440 ) and lower PPI (402 versus 538)
-fingerprint is slower and less secure

Doubtful. According to the most recently published OnePlus update schedule that I can find, they are giving 2 years of OS updates and one additional year of security updates. With Pixels, I'm pretty sure you get 3 years of OS updates.
https://www.droid-life.com/2018/06/28/oneplus-software-maintenance-schedule/
Correct, Pixel is 3 years of updates, and OP is two. But at this point, that would provide update endings at roughly the same time since the 2 XL is a year older than the 6T. Its a very compelling device. And having owned three OP phones, they are the fastest and smoothest phones I have ever used. If they only had a better camera!
Not in my opinion, based on what matters to me.
Yes you gain a faster SoC (in benchmarks, but does it really matter in real-life usage?) and more RAM (the most interesting upgrade the OP6T has to offer imo vs the Pixel 2 XL), but you lose a better camera, faster updates, the Pixel-exclusive features, the front-facing speakers, a sharper display, etc.
The OP6T seems to be a great phone, but personaly I won't replace my Pixel 2 XL with anything else until two things happen:
-That new device uses the Snapdragon 855. It promises to be a way better upgrade than what you gain by using a phone powered by the 845 versus the 835
-That new device supports 5G (probably the biggest revolution in years in the stagnant mobile phone industry)
I don't see any good reason at the moment to replace the Pixel 2 XL by anything else, including the OP6T. That phone is better in some areas, and worst in others.

Exactly...
I had OP6 before this and I can say as a fact, even if in 2 days of usage, that I now get all the hype about Pixel devices.
.
That 2 step unlocking system on the oneplus 6t has already started to get on peoples nerves. And I am not even talking about its accuracy or security.
Do not go by what they are showing on YouTube its actual accuracy is about three or four times out of 5.
.
I’ve been through many phones in last few months
Started off with pixel 2 XL. Moved to note 9 to op6 , back to note 9, then to a mate 20 pro now I’m back with pixel 2 XL.
For the cost of a pixel 2 XL (used) compared to the competition, it’s a bargain and I’m sticking with it now.
The op6 was nice, was very quick, but camera and speaker sound let it down.
Note 9 was lush, but the camera I thought let it down.
M20Pro, hardware was amazing but poor software full of bugs, this has been a rushed release.
I’m now content with pixel 2 XL. Nice speeds, fast updates, great camera, nice scree, nice dual speakers.
I like OnePlus features but rest is same. Slow updates and life cycle is short. I have Pixel 2 XL and I dunno why I want to get Essential Phone.

Oneplus 6t from pixel 2 xl

Hi I'm looking to change my pixel 2 xl cause of performance issues alot of lag and delay
I was thinking of Mate Pro 20 but I changed my mind after reading honest review on XDA-Developers
Is it better choice to get one plus 6t instead
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I got a 2xl and waiting for my 6t, which will be delivered tomorrow. Considered the pixel 3 but it's just a rerocked 2
I'm coming from a pixel 2xl. I was looking for something new because i started to feel apps were closing out too fast and reloading too often.
I started adding more apps. Mostly security camera and home automation apps. I wanted to see if having more RAM would help. I didn't even have any interest in the pixel 3 since they didn't upgrade the RAM
So far I've been pleased. Apps stay open longer but it seems it takes awhile for the phone to know which apps you use the most.
Battery life has been noticeably better but not by much
In screen fingerprint scanner isn't as fast as the pixel but the face unlock on the op6t is blazing.
I miss AOD and I'm surprised how often i use the squeeze for Google Assistant.
OnePlus gestures blows away both of Android navigation options. I'm happy to have the extra screen space.
Surprised how well the OnePlus screen compares to the pixel. There are more color options to adjust for your liking and the OnePlus seems to get a tad brighter. The pixel looks sharper on higher res content but barely and only if you stare.
OnePlus camera is okay. I'm not a huge picture person so the OnePlus is passable for me.
Pixel feels lighter and is easier to hold. Less fingerprints because of the material on the back of the pixel.
Right now I've factory reset the pixel to see if i can recover the performance. I bet it will be smooth again.
Hope this helps

I have Pixel 2 as well and will be getting OP 6T in couple of days... 6T seems to be a upgrade almost all cases except Camera.. well we have Gcam port for that
Coming from the pixel 2xl. The 3xls notch is disgusting compared with the price of the 3xl brining not a whole lot of new things make the 3xl a definite pass. It's unfortunate that this was the fastest phone I've ever had but in a year I've reset it 4 times due to extreme lagging and slowdown recently. Battery life dropped by almost half as well. The only redeeming quality is the camera but I am willing to give that up for the time being.

Yes. It's just a repost of the one from the 6 subforum.
Functionality is the same on the 6. Same things work, and same things don't work.
We can only use the 6.1 mods. Older 5.x versions won't connect to the camera on our phones.

Ordered 6t yesterday from 2XL

I've been doing everything I can not to order a new phone because I'm not in love with the pixel 3 and my two has been just fine. that is until I went to work, one of my 8th graders knocked my giant coffee tumbler straight on to the corner of the screen and it broke my Whitestone tempered glass screen protector and the screen underneath. Rather than put several hundred dollars into replacing the screen I decided it was a sign from God to try a new phone. My cousin and I were Nexus lovers since the Galaxy Nexus and I think this is the closest thing to it on paper. I'm getting a little nervous reading some of the reviews and I will be on Verizon.. I really loved my 2xl, but honestly I miss my 6p.

I came from a pixel 1. Pretty much everything seems better on the 6t. Except the camera, which is not too bad..
But the biggest letdown on the 6t is no usb3.0.

Dont worry man, u'll gonna love it, came from 2xl myself too, yes cam... Hmm sometimes can be a bit temperamental like fake lighting etc... But overall is not bad, once we get a stable gcam then we're golden
Came from/ still have an unlocked rom'd xl2 and I haven't touched it since the day I bought the 6t.
Edit: take that back, used it to take photos of my Spigen case on the 6T. And also for comparison shots with the cams. Apologies

I liked my 6P so much that I skipped the Pixels 1 and 2. Just purchased a 6T as it seems a more natural successor to the 6P than the overpriced P3XL. A little worried about no CDMA/no wifi calling on VZW but hoping it's a non-issue.
I love the 6T better than my pixel 2 XL, my pixel 2 XL would freeze up running the apps I use for work. The 6T has no issues whatsoever. Only thing I miss is the camera

honestly, i was skeptical about the CDMA-less service (what you have to have Vzw change your sim to), but it has been leaps and bounds better than my Axon 7s were, and even my Droid Turbo.
Its LTE only and that contributes to some amazing battery life. I easily get through a whole work day using GPS, Bluetooth for audio streaming music, etc with an average of 6-7 hours SOT. i am fairly sure the CDMA-less option is more efficient as there is no switching except from wifi to LTE, when applicable. I live in upstate SC, and my coverage has been better on 6t than any phone I have had. It takes a moment to get vzw to switch to cdma-less, but aside from that 5 min chat session from the My Verizon page, it has been flawless. Places i have never had coverage have it. I could not be happier.

I hope you're right. Here in metro Los Angeles there are a few spots near me where I see LTE drop down to 3G (on my N6P) and I'm concerned whether that equals no service on the 6T. Am I going to have calls dropped in that case? I understand roaming can take over if no LTE but then I assume that means roaming charges, which I normally have turned off to avoid roaming charges. I am encouraged that there are literally no threads/posts about people having dropped calls, though it's probably too soon to see complaints about roaming charges.
I had the Nexus 6p ,struggled to leave it but moved to the essential phones which ( after updates ) is a excellent phone .Never had a one plus device but was impressed by the 6T so got it .It's an excellent device ,battery life is just outstanding

the crazy thing with vzw and the OP6t is that in all of the areas i used to switch to 3g then LTE, now, i just have LTE. Its been great. and the battery life is amazing. probably bc the phone isnt trying to switch to cdma. lol.
I switched from a Pixel 2 XL as well and was only hesitate on this change because I loved the Pixel camera. I switched because of the poor ram management that I experienced. The Op6T has been great so far, my only gripe is the fingerprint scanner takes some time to get use too and the speakers. I recommend downloading the Google cam port and it'll drastically make difference on pictures.
