S7 vs Pixel? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Has anyone had the opportunity to compare these two phones in daily usage?
Interested in perspectives on things like performance, battery life, screen....

Galaxy S7 eats the Google Pixel for breakfast. Had them both and S7 its way superior. I got rid of the Pixel and kept the S7.

Personally, I'd go with the Pixel.
I have the S7 Edge. My wife has a Pixel XL, she had a Nexus 6P before that and a N6 before that. Before the S7 I had a Nexus 6, and before that an S2 then S4. All that to say I'm pretty familiar with both Samsung and Google phones.
I left the N6 for the S7 primarily for the camera and hardware upgrades. At first I didn't mind the slow updates from AT&T. It irritated me how quickly my wife's N6P got Nougat, but I still preferred the speed and camera of my S7.
Once she got her Pixel XL, though, I went into immediate regret mode and wish I'd waited. That's easy to say in retrospect, of course.
Battery wise, her Pixel easily outlasts my S7. She can go a couple of days without a recharge, mine has to be recharged once during the day and at night. Our usage patterns are similar enough that it's not a factor.
Performance is about equal from a user experience standpoint. I don't perceive one as being faster than the other. I don't know how the technical specs compare.
The camera on the Pixel is sick. The detail and color it picks up easily outpaces the S7's, and the S7 has an excellent camera. I'd say as of this post the Pixel's camera is the one to beat.
The Pixel is obviously easy to root and flash, I know that from my N6 days. I didn't think I'd miss that, but I do.
I rather like the TouchWiz UI but after a while that stopped making up for the slow GUI updates from Samsung/AT&T.
Just my $.02, might be an unpopular opinion in this forum.

Has the Pixel been released for AT&T? I thought it was a verizon exclusive.

It's a Google phone, works with any Carrier, just has to be bought outright

One thing the Pixel will currently not do is WIFI calling on AT&T which is a show stopper for me. Once you get used to this feature it is hard to go back.

Sell Galaxy S6 then buy Nexus 6P?

I have the same dilemna with the case of the oneplus two. The Galaxy S6 for me would have been perfect if it weren't for the damn UI stuttering of TouchWiz.
With regards to the specifications and software experience, do you think I should sell my galaxy s6 and get me a Nexus 6P or Oneplus 2? Opinions would be greatly appreciated. 2 things are holding me back, the beastly Exynos chip and the Camera.
I'd sell it for the 6p. The picture quality from the camera should be very close to the S6 and even though the exynos is the better chipset, touchwizz is still stuttery (as u claim) whereas the S810 Nexus 6P has been said to be extremely smooth/fluid.
Hi there,
When S6 released, I watched Galaxy Unpack live and I was very very excited. I was going to buy S6 but one thing hold me off. THE CLOSED SOURCE EXYNOS. And of course, locked bootloader.
According to DxOMark, Camera differences between S6 and Nexus 6P are small.
Camera Review For Nexus 6P
Camera Review For Galaxy S6
According to this, you should never miss your shots with S6 while you hold 6P's camera.
And what's the purpose of "beastly Exynos" when it lags in UI?
Comparing 6P to S6 and One Plus Two, for me 6P is winner for following reasons:
1. More durable body.
2. Stereo front facing speakers.
3. More active aftermarket development. Means a lot of cool stuff for 6P(Roms, kernels, tweaks, etc)
4. Seems like 6P has better battery than One Plus Two and S6 (Wait for GSM Arena's battery test. Those are the most accurate battery tests.)
5. Better screen that One Plus Two, however it comes toe to toe with S6. The only ones who complain about screen of 6P are PhoneArena guys, seems like they forgot to turn off adaptive brightness or turn on sRGB mode.
6. More stable and lagfree OS.
7. Fastest updates.
8. Using Android the way it meant to be used.
I would definitely recommend the 6p. I own an S6, and I can fully relate to the Touchwiz issues. All Nexus devices are made to give the user the smoothest, fastest experience possible. Uninhibited by 3rd party layers and skins that can slow everything down. The hardware and software are both high-end enough on the 6p to meet or beat the S6, so you wouldn't be sacrificing anything by switching. Also, you can't beat being first in line to receive security and other updates!
Read an article testing cell reception s6 and 2 other phones, no 6p but another huwei phone - s6 was horrible.
A couple have mentioned reception on the 6p is fantastic - which is supposedly a strong point for huwei (or however you spell it!) devices.
That would be enough for me to sell.
I've done just this, sold my S6 to buy a nexus. The goods on the S6 were very good - design, size, screen, camera. The bads similarly were very bad - software, ram management, battery.
Bloated horrible mess. So I have got the 6p now to try out. The screen is not as good as the s6, the camera is close but not equal to the s6 but the software experience on the 6p wipes the floor with the s6. I'd not hesitate to sell the S6 to get either of the new nexus phones.
This is my plan to sell S6 as soon as I go the 6P. S6 has been great so far, it took amazing photos. However, I really can't stand for the battery life. I basically has to put on battery save mode everyday. The touch wiz has been improved a lot, but it somehow still managed to slow the phone down after a while.
I owned the S6 and sold it for a Nexus 6P, im not going to ***** about the S6 because it was a great little phone. I just prefer a bigger handset and a better modding scene
Sold my s6 in July due to the crappy battery life, small screen and touch wiz.. It was a nice phone though

In process of selling my S6. The battery life and junk AT&T and Samsung have on it is abysmal and battery is even worse. I shouldn't have to spend hours disabling and turning off features to get the phone battery to last more than a few hours. I actually went back to my Nexus 6 and the Galaxy S6 has been sitting in the drawer

The exynos chip shouldn't be a reason to keep the phone. Its crap and locked down
No dev support and Knox... One plus 2 has its flaws with customer support and buggy software only advantage I see is the dual SIM . 6p is imho best android phone out.

Odd that you would say this and yet I'm reading it on my unlocked, rooted, debloated, knox removed S6 with a custom rom derived from the development that doesn't exist using that crap exynos chip you mentioned that rides at or near the top of the leaderboard in nearly every measurable performance category. lol
Not that the concept in general doesn't have merit as the stock rom does hitch up here and there and thats a shame on such excellent hardware but there is no reason to kick objectivity and factual information to the curb.
To the thread in general I have the S6 and I'm getting this phone but I'll be moving on come spring. I love the Nexus line but I have never made friends with phablet sizing and I'll tire of this phones size after a short while just like I did with all the other phablets I've owned. It is rather irritating to me that my preferred size is the 5 to 5.2 range and this seems to be more and more relegated to the mid range but I'm hopeful that come spring one of the 820 offerings will come with flagship hardware in the 5ish inch range. Of course come next fall I'll jump on the N5/6.1P or whatever it will be called because I'll miss the Nexus line and its unrivaled support. I've owned all but the second, forget what that one was called?
One other thing that jumps out at me about the P is the lack of wireless charging. I'm completely converted over to it for ordinary day to day use and have pads around the house and holders in the cars and on my boat. I do like to have quick charge by whatever name for those moments where you need to pump some quick batt so one is not a replacement for the other. Not a deal breaker but it rides over on the con side for me.
Most of the other stuff mentioned here seems like advantage P or a push to me but the camera is still a question in my mind. It has been reviewed well but none of the reviews I've seen so far have mentioned much about its ability to take a "snap" shot. You know, the one where the moment is there and you take the shot or miss it because its gone forever. No set up, no time to make adjustments. The S6 is as good as I've experienced at that kind of shot. I can usually expect such a picture to be in focus and have reasonably good exposure and so on. Not art, not perfect, but pretty darn good. The P may be just as good or better so I'm not calling it out just saying I haven't seen any reviewers or users here talking about this aspect of the cameras performance.
Did I mention I hate that the flagship hardware is more and more becoming available only in the phablet sizing?

Nexus 6p to Essential!

Im really thinking about the Essental, its pretty much down to this or G Pixel 2 XL, , but the price point and features of the essential are way better, it looks better too, specwise they are very similiar.
I love Project Fi though , i pay only what use , so if my plan is $60 bucks but i only use $20, i pay $20, thats the thing about the Pixel, but at over a $1000 bucks it looks like the Essential with $60/ unlimited by Sprint is a better deal
Anyone else coming from 6P, ive been a Nitrogen rom guy since day one , i love the 6 p , but once you get the battery bug "25%" , the hardware fails quivkly and its time to move on , this is my second 6P ,
Also switching betweeen Sprint/tmobile/uscellular is really cool, however the best service abd what im on 99% of the time is Sprint anyway, its looking like the Essential is tge one
Im coming from.Nexus 6p, OnePlus One , Moto X developers, Note 2, S2 , Note and a few HTCs before that
Well camera is better in 6P and Pixel 2. More features in these phones, there are really no special things at all in essential. Don't get me wrong, i like that. Software is not mature enough, but the Oreo-beta seems Essential are going the right way. Lineage 14.1 is availible and its great. Lineage 15 on the way too. The size of the phone, and the overall quality of it is the best i've ever had! It's a great phone for the price and if price matters, this is a great alternative to pixel 2.
Get the essential phone. No regrats, YOLO swagin here on Oreo and magisk.
Don't get no ca ca lg made phone ?
I upgraded from the original ones one lineage and this phone is very similar in terms of software but very different, upgraded hardware.
Do you want something that already looks dated (pixel 2 or xl2) or do you want that flashy iPhone X look and save $500+ cash?
It's no brainer when you think about how fash technologies advance. Not worth the price and on top of that the stupid little issues they are having.
If I'm paying $1100+ for a phone it better be damn perfect and have the best build quality out there...the new pixels are not...get the essential
I moved from 6P to Essentials over a week ago originally due to the battery bug problem. I was tired of carrying around a battery pack and random phone shutdown at 35% battery. Disclosure, I'm not a techy or an enthusiast so my feedback from just a regular user's perspective. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality and price I paid ($450). I was looking at Pixel 2xl, LG V30 but the design/build with the attractive price point of Essential sealed the deal. The camera is pretty decent. I have no complaints about it. I sideloaded Google camera app and used both Essential and Google apps. I don't find much difference between the two. The pictures from Google app seem to be brighter but Essential app seem quicker to me. Battery is excellent but that's sort of a low bar coming from 6P with battery issue. Software-wise, I'm ok with not being on Oreo it didn't impact my daily use much and overall the softwares on the phones are ok. I think to me this is the best-looking android phones I have ever seen. The build with premium materials and the design look great and feel great in your hands. With the hardware spec not much different from Pixel 2 or LG V30 and the right pricing, I'm willing to compromise somewhat and I was extremely happy with it. Hope this helps.

Same here. Came from a 6P. Did not get the first Pixel because the screen was 5.5 and that was too small for me. Got one of the first essential phones that came out. Had some bugs and they fixed it. Looked into the Pixel XL. Like the larger screen but the price is absurd when you get basically the same with the Essential. Running Oreo beta. No other kids, root or such. Phone works well for me. Camera is adequate for my needs.
Also came from 6P & I freaking love the Essential phone. The build quality is phenomenal and I can get by with the camera. Google didn't do it right to many issues with pixel 2. Go with Essential you won't regret it.
Came from a 6p as my battery was dying at 40% and I bought my phone from best buy instead of google so google could care less that their phone failed me. got the $160 deal on the phone from sprint and liking it so far way better battery camera is decent with the google app and is pretty snappy. the bugs can be annoying but i think it will be good once oreo is out of beta I Hope. really just happy I don't have to carry around my batter pack anymore.

I came from a 6P to and Essential PH-1.
I sent mine back but I was in the first wave of phones with the high price and all the issues.
I have a LG G6 but I'd trade the LG G6 to get a PH-1 again since most of the issues are resolved and accessories are available.
Also at $500 it's the phone bargain of the year.
The feel and form factor are great.
The Quality feels every bit as good as the iPhone X.
Also the XL is bigger and doesn't feel as good. YMMV
Also the XL costs almost double.
Unless the camera is your thing go for the PH-1.
I went 6p to Axon7(great device by the way) to Essential. All were good upgrades over the other. My Essential camera is just as good and really has taken some better pics than either of the devices before it using Gcam. Only thing I miss is the accessories as I'm a case and protector whore.
Go For It
Two 6P's and a Moto X developer phone also. Essential phone is now my daily driver with absolutely no regrets. I'm using Verizon's networkdue to location. Only reasons not to get this would be if you have to have Fi, or have to have headsets. Super quality build, camera on 6P is slightly better, screen is worse on the 6P. For size, imagine that just the screen on the 6P is the size of the whole phone. Battery is so much better. Underwhelmed by the overpriced new Pixels.
Sprint has you sign up never telling you they dont have the goddamn device in stock, they wait til you order it , then send an email that says were sorry its back ordered tough **** asshole , wont have any til christmas, but we are still charging you fees and the overnight shipping and anything else, thats piss poor
I canceled and gave my opinion of the way Sprint is f ucking people , they never mention anywhere that they dont have the phone instock and encourage you to use overnight shipping if you do it before 2 pm for $10 bucks, once you sign up, they send an email and blame the manufacturers of not having enough devices, if this was a first run fone id say ok , this fone came out in august, uts your fwult Sprint and lying to public is bull****
i have some experience of what you have so let me give my 2 cents.
i came from HTC M9 and Moto X Pure on Sprint. i still have my SERO-P Plan but instead i dont lease phones (because they make me switch my plan). I bought the Essential phone in the end of Oct. at best buy and im quite happy with it compared to the other two. At first, i had to return it because it would not activate on sprint and we couldnt figure out why. so i returned it and got another one. the other one turns out though was slippery like glass and overheated so i returned it... then after reading the XDA forums i noticed there is a heavier weight on the new ones so we weighed it before i took it. the new one is actually much more grippy than the last even with dry hands.
what i love about it:
first... the battery life. easily the best in battery life. i get 5 to 6 hours on a normal day of on screen time
fast android updates. the newest updates you have to take out your sprint sim, put a gsm sim and from there it will take the updates
the size, beauty, and weight
internet speed is pretty good too, thought gigabit speed is a hard time of getting actual confirmation from them. ive received on a few occasions 70+ mbps in my small town where ive gotten 30 last time with m9 and x pure.
the look is amazing and pure android is the icing on the cake.
bad things are:
camera is been improved since ive gotten it but still needs work. the issue ive experienced is the graininess.
sometimes i miss calls and texts (not sure if its sprint or the phone itself) but what i noticed is its pretty good compared to the m9 as far as bars go. the x pure was better in signal but it never got the speeds i got from this phone.
usb-c dongle but there is a 3.5mm mod coming for the phone soon from what i heard
response could be improved a bit
overall i will say go for it. despite the negative review... i still give it a 4.5 out of 5 because its andy rubin who knows how to tweak android anyway he feels like it and so far they did alot of improvement with just software updates. do a speed test with your 6p and essential and see for yourself. post a video if you can
Well im still up in the air , im not gonna use Sprint , i dont like being lied to, you dont start a relationship with a lie it never ends well, that being said, i dig the Essential and it is unkocked, just wish Fi would accept it, im also looking at the Pixel 2 XL and the Razer , seen another flagship killer called the Blackview S8 and id jusmp for a samsung S8+ , if the bl.was unlocked , i wont ever buy a locked boot loader unless it can be unlocked , thanks for the review that was what i wanted
I came for the 6P as well and I have no regrets. I do miss the camera on the 6P but I tend to still carry it around for the camera and mess with the os with new roms.
With the gcam port the essential takes some good shots.

@gman2pi or anyone on Verizon's network. how is the data speed and connectivity? My 6P has been having the shutdown issue at 50% and i missed emergency calls text today.
Was so frustrated that I ordered a battery tried to replace it and broke the damn phone and need one ASAP.
My concern has been the thread with the connectivity issues that the phone is having and slow data speeds.

I've had no issues and get the same bar strength and performance as my 6P in my usual locations. I only use phone, text, and primarily e-mail and some downloads on their network. I don't stream much on cellular and don't use Verizon visual voicemail or their other "special features" so can't comment on that.
Thanks, button presses.
Now I'm kind of salty because i got an email from best buy where i could have gotten one with the camera for $500 and i did not pull the trigger.
Came from og pixel, earpiece speaker blew, then went back to my nexus 6.. then this.. battery life is insane..on verizon signal seems great though i have missed some calls.. not sure why.. but great build quality.. no regrets

Currently have a 6P that I replaced the battery on. I am ordering the pixel 2 xl. It's a lot more money, but the video stabilization is so bad on the essential I couldn't buy it.

Samsung Galaxy S9?

Well, i just watched Samsung's unpacked event and i can honestly say it's pretty underwhelming and for the first time in ages i don't have the itch to preorder a Samsung phone. As fellow pixel 2 owners I was wondering what you thought?
Would never buy Samsung . All flash no refinement
Same here. I can't stand Samsung. Although they have the best build quality on the market imo, I just hate their customer service and software.
Well... I appreciate a good Samsung device but I love my Pixel XL 2 even more. Thankfully I didn't get the itch either. Wish we had mst ..
It's not supposed to impress this year. That was the S8's job. The S9 is just a spec bump year. Apple and Samsung both do this.
Besides the screen, nothing on it interests me. Had the S8 for 2 months cause I picked up cheap between phones until the 2XL came out and was longest 2 months of my life
Nothing to rave about! Snapdragon 845 processor is a plus....
Oh, I so need this Samsung phone gotta get it.
I'm so sick and tired of all these nasty monthly updates.
Samsuck is the future.
The only phone that can make me switch from pixel 2 xl is pixel 3 xl
Cheers ?

I've always liked Samsung stuff but I hate the edge screen. They fixed the fingerprint scanner...I might have tried the S9 instead of the 2XL if it was available then. Samsung is promising better updates for enterprise S9s so I am wondering how this plays out for everyone else.
The 2XL is still the phone for me. We get another device here in this house next December and I'll see whats on the go then. Probably the 3XL or Note 9 will be up there for me.
The early days of the notes where good but ever since Knox, I won't go back. Overpriced and locked down tight. Not worth it.
They Just improved little bit camera but from videos as i saw pixel 2 xl its still the King out there..
So it doesnt worth it For me.
No way. Samsung support alone is enough to keep me far, far away. They have to be one of the worst I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. A very close second is the lack of updates. Over 6 months into Oreo, and most of their S8's still don't have it. Lastly, how my S7 edge magically slowed down and slowed down until it was almost unusable right around when the S8 was released was the nail in the coffin. Never ever again will I buy a Samsung phone.
Regardless, I love my XL 2. This phone is just bada$$. Zero lag, the camera is amazing, immediate updates. Yep, this is THE phone for me. Unless Essential 2 or some other stock Android phone comes out and does pretty much immediate updates and actually beats a pixel, I'm sticking with these. XL 3 will be my next I'm sure.

Totally agree. I had a S8+ and couldn't wait to get rid of it to get a Pixel 2 XL.
The only good thing is that they at least tinker with their camera hardware. Changing F stop is not bad for ppl who like to shoot manual.
And honestly, for slow/ long exposure shot, sometimes I miss the pro mode in this pixel phone.

Coming from the Pixel 2 XL? Are you happy so far? Dissapointed? I want the s10+

I'm on the fence about coming back to samsung. I'm so used to being rooted and doing what i want but i hear now you can do most of that now without root. Main thing is blocking ads throughout the ecosystem and blocking apps from accessing the internet.
Will i gain more than i loose upgrading to the S10 plus?
Come back just for the OneUI .
It's a game changer.
Thank you Samsung.
Not that informative but thx?
I came from a 3XL and I went back to the 3XL. The hardware is great (except the fingerprint sensor, it stinks), but the software just doesn't work for me. Every time I give the S10+ another try I'm just annoyed with it. The Pixel experience is just better for me. My S10+ has been relegated to backup phone status.
disappointed, stay with the 2XL. battery life worse, smoothness of the software are worse. pixel experience is the best.
Sorry for kicking this topic but I'm curious about your experiences.
I have been using a Pixel 2 XL for 1,5 years now (and Nexus 6P, 5X, 5 before) and moved to a S10 3 weeks ago. I honestly don't know for sure whether I am going to stick with the S10 or not. It has it's advantages; especially the wide angle camera is one, but also memory management is much better. I never did a factory reset on my Pixel 2 XL though and went from Android 8 > 8.1 > 9 > 10 so that might be better after a reset.
I have tested several apps and actions but they are equal in terms of speed. The volume rocker of the S10 is located so annoyingly high it irritates me nearly every day and it is also on the incorrect side. I am used to the fingerprint scanner in the display and don't think it is better or worse. I tested the S10 one next to the one of the 2XL and the display of the S10 usually wakes up quicker. Battery life is comparable (I think) and of course the S10 is smaller, which is also an advantage. But the main camera is worse (especially sharpening and noise reduction are way, way too agressive) and some of the apps you can't change. I am using an Exynos version, but I don't think that will make much of a difference. Oh and why the hell are there so many holes in this thing at the bottom?
Anyone who made the same step from a Pixel 2 XL > S10 who'd like to share their experience?
I went from 2xl to Xperia 1 to S10. I loved my 2xl and I also liked the Sony but bought S10 for two reasons. Dual SIM which I need for work and size. I simply don't get why the phones have to be absolutely huge these days, S10 has a perfect size for me. I love stock android so had to make few adjustments to the UI but that's not a big issue. Camera is comparable to 2xl although not had much time to play with it yet. Battery life sucks at the moment but again, still early days, hopefully it'll get better.

Worth the upgrade from Galaxy S7?

Hello everyone.
I used to have an account here but I lost my password a long time ago ...anyway, I am back!
The title says it all really, do you think its worth upgrading from my Galaxy S7? Honestly, I am only interested in the camera(s), the 90 hertz screen (which I will force to 90 hertz mode all the time). Worth it? My S7 probably has only a year of life left in it at best.
Also I have a few smaller questions.
-I don't really need the other features, can I turn them off/disable without rooting? Will this increase battery life?
-How bad is the battery when the screen is forced to run at at 90 hertz?
-I had to root my S7 to disable some Samsung garbage from always running in the background, is the pixel a better experience in that regard?
Have a look here:

The pure Android experience that Pixel devices offer is definitely a plus over most manufacture's phones with bloat. Three years of guaranteed updates is nice too. The phone is also available to be bootloader unlocked (as long as it isn't the Verizon model) in case you ever want to root it.
That being said.....
- definitely wait until the $200 off prices around Black Friday if you want a Pixel 4/4XL
- seriously consider a Pixel 3a/3a XL instead - especially with the $100 off pricing available now and around Black Friday. It doesn't have the 90hz screen, but other wise is a very capable phone. It is certainly a "better value" than the Pixel 4/4XL. (In other words, the phone offers probably 70% of what the Pixel 4 does, yet costs half as much as the Pixel 4).
S7 is still a great phone, especially with Gcam, but I think Pixel 4 is worth the upgrade for telephoto, 6GB RAM, and buttery smooth performance. Just make sure you pay no more than $600 USD.
I came from a LG G7 and it was a great, noticeable upgrade in terms of smoothness and speed. The G7 was becoming frustrating to use and its CPU is two generations ahead of the one in your S7. As for battery life, it's about on par with my G7, it's decent. If you're looking for a great Android experience, it's hard to beat a Pixel.

Thank you both, and everyone for your reply's.
Yeah, I wont be getting it until they (hopefully) drop the price for black Friday sales/cyber Monday.
I almost forgot that I lover wireless charging - so it has to be the 4!
Any Other Pixel *except* the 4/4XL

Sorry; I have to vote *NYET* on the 4/4 XL as an upgrade/crossgrade from an S7 - and it is entirely because of one feature it lacks - no fingerprint lock. I don't hate the S7; I came from it myself (it remains my backup phone). The fingerprint lock, though, was my go-to feature on the S7. Every OTHER Pixel retains the feature; however, the Pixel 4 (and 4 XL) tossed it. Given that face-lock has issues with security, until they fix it, I don't trust it. Also, those same earlier Pixels import your saved fingerprints (along with every other setting) from your S7; I lost diddly (moved to Pixel 3a). I never ran Gcam on my own S7 - which was likely the one thing I *should* have tried; I went from Camera 7.1 (which came on my 3a with stock 10) to 7.2 (which came this year as an update) - I've discovered taking pictures with a phone can actually be useful! (I've taken more pictures with my 3a than in my entire phone history previous - which shows how little I got out of previous Android phones.) One feature I expected to miss (rooting), I don't - unlike with the S7, where I *did* miss being able to root or run TWRP, I could do so now (by merely dropping back to Android 9); however, I have absolutely no interest OR desire to do so. I'm quite happy running dead-stock 10. (And by dead-stock, I mean exactly that - Pixel Launcher and all; I haven't run dead-stock Android since Android 5 on a tablet - or ever on a phone. If I move FROM dead-stock, it will be to AOSP 10 - 9 has no chance of going back on my 3a.)
