So excited about getting my new phone today but have a question prior to opening just to be prepared. What is the best process to ensure the battery health when first opening device? Do I charge the device fully prior to turning it on for the first time or do I let the battery drain fully before I put it on the charger? I know this is an age old discussion but not sure with these new phones how to best handle it.

I honestly used it took it died, then I charged it all the way to 100 (never leave overnight) then I let it die all the way, then charge again.. So far good battery life

That is the worst thing you can do. These aren't NiCads. LiIon batteries do not like to be fully discharged.
You'll likely find that the battery will be charged to roughly 40%. This is considered the ideal amount of charge for long-term storage. People often still worry about memory effects of batteries, harping back to the days of older battery types such as Ni-Cad and some Ni-Mh batteries but the same isn't true for Li-ion or Li-Pol batteries.
The one thing to absolutely try to avoid is letting the battery run down to flat. Li-ion batteries will degrade quicker over time if discharged fully, which is also why devices have a built-in "buffer" amount when you run the battery down to avoid damaging them.
Honestly, the main issue for your battery is heat, and large drops or knocks. Try and keep it cool and never let it die on you!
You don't need to do anything special, just use it. One thing you should definitely not do is completely discharge the battery though. You should also refrain from keeping the device connected to a charger once it's reached full charge, keeping the battery at peak voltage decreases the long-term battery life. Just a point of info: Phone batteries don't LET you completely discharge. Once your phone shuts down (afer running "out" of battery, the battery still has some level of charge left.

That is right, but if you continue to power the device on in order to drain it more you'll cause problems. It's virtually impossible to completely drain one of these batteries, it actually powers down at something like 50% of its true capacity, because if it gets much lower than this it can cause irreparable damage. If you do somehow manage to drain one of these batteries past that magical point (by the methods I described above), it will simply not power on again because there's a minimum amount of voltage required.
Interesting. I normally charge my devices while I sleep so when I wake up they are fully charged. Once I'm up I'm ready to go and have a full charge not wake up to charge the device and wait for it to reach capacity idk. I haven't had any issues in any phone I've had while charging it while I sleep at night

It just basically reduces the capacity of the battery over time. I charge in the evening before bed, it only drops a couple of percent overnight thanks to doze.

With my Nexus like now I'm in bed with 77% battery, I'm usually on my device until I fall asleep, my BlackBerry has great standby time. With doze, I don't lose much battery if any and since the phone recharges so fast. I'm rarely "dead" enough to warrant me charging it while I sleep like say my note four etc. But this is food for thought in regards to charging

Just like the title says, I'm not sure it's the last few updates but I'm on nougat. I'm not using power saving but I wasn't before. I haven't really changed more or added any new apps that I can remember. Can anyone advise if they have encountered a similar issue and how you fixed it?

Same for me. Battery has started draining significantly faster than before. I was told to go into recovery, wipe cache, and reboot but that hasn't fixed it. Although, I don't want too, I may be pushed towards an s8 upgrade if I can't figure out why my battery sucks now.
my battery has sucked from day 1, absolutely the worst phone ever for this. Nougat helped it last a little longer, but it still takes a year and a half to charge compared to past few phones I've owned. Charging from a 2.1amp car charger doesn't move but 3% in 3 hours. My portable battery charger is the same way, can barley budge the phone charge. Yes fast charge is on.
Note 7 and iPhone 6S + both charged just fine with the same vehicles and with the same portable brick charger.
what I still don't get is why with the same hardware specs for the most part minus the screen, why the note 7 was such a drastically better phone for battery life. I thought it was nougat, but that definitely wasn't it. I'm down to 20% battery life left by noon anymore with the S7E. Note 7 wouldn't hit 20% until 10pm at night (day starts around 7-7:30am)

You might have a defective battery. The fact that it won't charge up and assuming your charger is still good, is telling.

charges perfectly fine when plugged into the power brick. Used the same cable in the car etc. to no change. Just something about those it hates.
I'm finally going to breakdown at some point and restore it and start over just to make sure. next step will be to see if sprint will replace it. I am thinking I am going to buy an S8E outright here very soon...
I bought a brand new unlocked Moto G4 Play from.Amazon Prime last week. Between purchasing it on Prime and the phone being old and OOP I got a great deal. However, I'm having a couple issues.
The first is with the battery. It charges insanely slow. Yesterday morning I had it plugged in for 3+ hours and it only charged 70%, from 15% to 85%. Also, for a battery rated at 2800mAH, it seems to drain fairly quick. Is it possible that the battery lost some of it's power while sitting around in the Amazon warehouse for so long?
My second issue is with file transfers onto my Mac. This is the third Android phone I've owned and it's the first to.cause my computer to freeze up when connecting it via USB. The charger that came with the phone is just one piece, I.e you can't disconnect the USB cable from the outlet plug. I had rummage around for a USB cable to use. It's an old cable, so I think that's what could be causing my.computer to.freeze. I'm gonna buy a new USB cable today and hopefully it fixes the problem.
Getting back to the battery, is there an app the can analyze my battery? So I can find out if it's defective or just not running at 100%? Any other suggestions on what I can do to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated.

As far as apps go you can check the Play Store, and go by rating to see what is best for you. I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsinib.batterymonitor
Charging with the stock charger will take hours. It's only rated at like 527 mamps (or whatever it's called), but it will never charge fast. I use a 2 amp quick charger, and from around 20% to 100% it takes just about an hour.
The drain may be because it's new, and getting settled in, so it should get better after a bit of time. Plus it does take a couple charge cycles to reach its full charging potential. I get an easy 5 1/2 to 6 hours screen on time on a full charge.
Now for using a computer I don't have experience with Macs, but I have heard issues with Android and Macs not playing well together. Maybe newer/better cable will help.

Like said above, the charger that comes with it is very low power, you can charge faster with a 1 - 2 amp charger and it won't hurt anything since there is built-in circuitry in the phone to control charging.
When I first got my G4 Play, I charged it up and let it sit unused for about 2 weeks only checking the battery remaining periodically and it still had ~15% left after 2 weeks on standby.
If your battery doesn't get better, you may want to exchange the phone with Amazon before your return is up.
G4 Play XT1607 Battery Drain

I bought a phone from eBay. Ok, a bunch of them. I'm buying broken, fixing, and selling. I have hovered around G4 Plays as that is what I learned with and am slightly comfortable with. This new issue has got me stumped though.
Moto G4 Play - listing stated 'will not power on or charge'. No problem, I have extra parts. I tried to plug it in and sure 'nuff, no power. Tried another battery and she fired right up with Marshmallow already reset. I replaced the charging board and it started charging but it was hot. Hotter than normal I thought. Said that it would take 3 hours to fully charge from 71%. Whatever. She wanted the update to 7.1.1 just like the two xt1609s, the other two xt1607s, and my recent xt1601. I let it update then turned it off. Battery was dead the next morning. Plugged it up and no charging animation appeared. Another battery and it fired up. The heat is coming from the metal plate just above the battery contacts. Drains the battery no matter if it's on or off. What could it be?

ok, first: I'm on stock rom, december update. completely stock, not even flash twrp yet. been on this for... a week maybe. and there is a really weird thing happening: I charge my phone normally, original charger and cable and everything, but when I unplug, it goes down like... one percent per minute. like, from 100% to 80% in 20 minutes. if I'm using the phone it's even faster. it stops at 58%, and the drain is normal from this point on.
any thoughts?
no thoughts? I just cant understand. my phone is fully stock, theres no unusual app and such. keeps draining as water.

You could try to press and hold the power button until your device reboots. While it reboots, plug in your charger and let it charge at least 1h more after it has reached 100%.
I don't know if this procedure really re-callibrates your battery, got this from the "official" Moto forums. At least you can't harm your device with it.

tried this method and a curioud thing is that the phone didn't go over 93%. it stopped charging at this point
just a lil update: I just charged my phone with a non turbopower charger (I have two of those from moto) and... my phone came back to normal.
seems to be that it was charging properly with my turbopower charger, and... after trting a regular chsrger, its charging with my turbo again.

I was going to suggest the same thing as I have been experiencing that the battery lasts much longer when charged via a regular charger rather than with turbo. Try using a regular charger for overnight charging & see if you notice an increase in battery life.
I'm a heavy user with 125+ Apps installed now down to (60-80) & use it daily for 6-8 hours straight but I noticed after about a year with my Moto G4 Plus XT1644 RETAIL US my battery life was dying literally a full (turbo-charge) only lasted 30 mins & then it was dead. I then decided to bootloader unlock my device & that improved my battery tremendously but I found that custom roms have issues with either displaying the bars correctly or are just weaker due to some proprietary software. So for two weeks I've been fixing one thing & having another issue with something else.
I'm officially back on stock nougat with December security update & soon to be twrp+magisk. It seems to be the most stable & doesn't have the software issue with the bars which was a dealbreaker for me.
Report back if you find differences in battery using a standard charger vs the official turbo one!

man, I just needed to charge once with a regular charger and everything came back to normal. I'll try again and see if theres difference. thank you for replying!
The past couple months I have had some charging issues with my phone. The first few times it just didn't want to recognize the charger or would only slow charge. A couple times cleaning the port helped. Then it seemed like the cord might be the problem so I ordered a new OEM one. The problem has gotten worse and happens the same with the brand new charger.
The last few days it will fast charge to 70% and then stop charging altogether. I can't get it to take any more than 70%. I had the accubattery app which had a feature to stop the charging at a preset value to prevent wear of the battery. I only used this for a little bit and turned it off. Then I uninstalled the app in case a glitch was causing it to keep stopping the charge.
I have a new OEM battery ready to install if the battery is indeed faulty but even starting at 70% I can't kill the phone in a day so I'm not rushing to replace the battery yet. I'm just not sure that is the problem.
The phone is not rooted and is completely stock. It hasn't been wiped or anything since I bought it new over a year ago. Anyone have any ideas?

Update: I powered off the phone when it was refusing to charge at all and it was down to 56 percent. While powered off it charged all the way up to 100% no problem and since doing that it will charge without problems. Seems like this fixed it.
Update: the problem is still there. Still not charging above 70% while turned on. Not sure if the battery is failing or if it's a software issue.
Does anyone know of any other forums people might be discussing issues with the OnePlus 5? This forum is looking quiet these days and/or people aren't having a lot of hardware issues with this phone (hopefully).

The op5 forum isn't quiet. If nobody has an idea or any possible solution for you, you won't receive an answer. Seems you're the only one who has this sort of problem.
If you have warranty, just claim it. That's the easier way. Cause when it's the logic board or parts of it, it can be expensive.
It's already over a year old so no more warranty. I'm just going to try replacing the battery when I get a chance. If that doesn't work I'll try a new charging port (already tried a new charger).

Have you tried using the Ampere app? It does not make any magic, but it can give you and idea of what the problem may be.

Yes I installed it the other day and discovered when I was plugged in above 70% it was actually charging but very slowly. But this isn't always the case because when I first discovered the problem I kept waking up with a phone at 70% that had been plugged in all night.
I'm not sure how long ago this started because I typically try to charge it in the morning after my alarm goes off since dash charging is so fast. Eventually I noticed it never getting above 70% so I plugged it in overnight and still didn't get over 70%.
Accubattery says my battery is now 82% healthy. Despite not being able to charge above 70 I can still get a heavy days usage or a couple easy days. So maybe the lost health in my battery came completely off the top of the displayed percentage of my battery?
Occasionally it seemed like my phone wouldn't charge at all no matter what the percentage so the problem could be worse, but I may also be dealing with a worn out 1 year old charger cable and a new one I got a month ago that is defective because when I couldn't charge at all with the new one the old one charged fine. So I'm still trying to figure this out.

i am facing the same issue, i keep plugging the charger in and out till it works ... don't know why
Now that I've gone back to the original charger it seems to be making it to 100% every time and no longer seems to stop at 70 but if I move the phone a little while plugged in it sometimes stops dash charging and starts slow charging. Before when I heard it stop charging and start charging again randomly while I was in bed (it makes that little sound when dash charging starts) it was sitting on the floor unmoved.
So I think my possibilities are 1) 2 bad chargers
2) 1 bad charger and a bad charging port
3) bad charging port
4) bad battery + 1 or more bad chargers.
Or any other combinations of those problems. I think I'm dealing with 2 issues and that's why I can't figure it out.
