Xperia Z1 2nd Place in DxO Mark's Overall Mobile Camera Ranking

Apparently, DxO Mark just gave out a score to Xperia Z1 and amazingly, just sits at 2nd place behind the Pureview 808 in overall Mobile Camera Ranking! :victory:
And that's without the "firmware updates" that will supposedly improve the camera!

I guess the big sensor is the key here. Dxomark doesn't reflect the real life though. I'm not very happy with the z1 camera... far too noisy especially at 20mp. Still better than my older nexus 4 anyway.

Just curious, what settings are you using? I'm pretty satisfied with the Z1 Camera of mine, but that was after tweaking some of the shooting settings I'm in. At first, I was pretty disappointed as well but now I think I'm good.

I bought the phone yesterday so I'm still testing it. At the moment I like to shoot in manual mode at 8mp with image stabiliser on.

Ah ok. That's good then. Shooting at 20MP especially in low-light results in (I'm not sure why) worse pictures than shooting at 8MP 4:3 .. in my tests, it resulted in darker images.
I also like to shoot at 8MP 4:3 to take advantage of the oversampling and leave the rest of the settings to Auto. One thing though is that I turn off the Stabilizer. I found that turning it on resulted in the camera choosing a much higher ISO than intended compared when leaving it off. This may be due to its detection of slight handshake movements and it tries to compensate by upping the ISO in favor of a faster shutter speed.

Yes shooting at 20mp is useless. Pics are so noisy... it's a shame. At 8mp the image quality is pretty good and yes, with the stabiliser on the iso is higher for that reason. But I prefer a bit more noise other than a blurred image.

Nice. What metering and focus are you using? Particularly for macro / night shots. I find that using Single Auto Focus setting doesn't keep the whole image in focus and just the middle part, but I find that the multi-auto focus setting doesn't do too well either particularly in macro shots. Currently, I shoot in landscape mode when shooting macro.

I'm using metering average (it seems to do a better job with white balance as well). About focus I always use touch focus... I like to choose what I want in focus...
I love th bokeh management of the lens.. look at this for example

And there's you mistake - the software image stabiliser introduces noise. Switch it off.

Yeah, I know... but as I said I prefer a slighty noiser image than a blurred one. I'll try again without stabiliser anyway.

Hopefully new update has improved superior auto mode...

Try night mode can reduce noise.

What i find telling from that review is this graph.
Above 80 lux the S4 shots have more 'texture' than the Z1.
Contrary to what people might think the Z1 has the best noise reduction indoors.

Not much of a fan of them anymore, after I wrote to them to see if they would do the Xperia Z test again after Sony updating the firmware to fix the bad camera quality, they didn't even respond to me. On the flip side it is Sony's fault for shipping substandard equipment, get all the important things right first, especially the camera when they are making such a big deal about how amazing it is.

DxO finally got around to testing the G2. Overall G2 placed 6th. However in the photo section it ties with the Z1 in terms of score. A closer examination of the parameters tested shows the Z1 edges ahead slighlty.
Where the Z1 comes out ahead : Exposure & Contrast, Colour, Noise Reduction, Flash
Where the G2 comes out ahead : Autofocus, Texture, Artifacts
4 > 3 or Z1 ahead by a little.
What lets the G2 down is video, where its ranked 15th to the Z1's 2nd place.
If you consider phones alone, Z1 has the best video out there.
Now we have to wait for DxO to test the Note 3 to see whether it will affect the Z1's ranking.

Sorry to jump here like that, I don't even know all this stuff but after read what you guys saying is like the camera on Z1 was made for experienced people who know how to set up the device. This is a phone anyway and I like to go around and shooting everything but almost of the pictures are crap. That how shouldn't be with a camera on a phone with 20mpx.

Mate 9 camera... AMAAAAZING!!!!

Just got my Mate 9, and I chose it for a number of reasons over the competition (Samsung S8+) and one of those reasons was the camera.
Yes of course the S8+ will have a better camera in many ways but the one thing no smartphone can do properly in moving targets like children (the reason I wanted it) is bokeh.
So of course the first thing I tried when I got it was wide aperture mode to see how good it actually is - is it a gimmick? a novelty? not that good? is the rest of the camera so awful that it negates this?
The answer is it is ABSOLUTELY BLOODY BRILLIANT. I have an expensive DSLR with an expensive lens to get those nice wide aperture shots but oh my God this thing is in a different league! We went down to the lake yesterday with our daughter and I was snapping away in wide aperture mode. Got back home and spent an hour or so with my wife going through all the shots altering the bokeh effect RETROSPECTIVELY. The results are purely STUNNING - like my DLSR if not better. But the real clincher is the fact that you can alter the bokeh effect as you wish, chaneg the amount, change what is in focus... print out two photos of the same scene but with different bokeh focus.... all of this done RETROSPECTIVELY, something I can never do with the DSLR.
I jsut don't see the need to take my big ehavy DSLR out anymore now I have this. AMAZING!
Yes the low light performance of the smallish aperture is not amazing, but then no smartphone I've come across is good enough in this regard anyway for me... and it's a small price to pay really for this amazing effect.
It really should be marketed more!
I'll do a proper review at some point I guess, but it's also worth mentioning that whilst colour reproduction isn't brilliant, the screen is phenomenally crisp and bright and looks sharper and clearer than my quad HD.
And the fingerprint sensor - OH MY GOD this is the quickest most amazing sensor EVER. I soppted usign the sensor on my old phone as too unreliable but this is like some sort of voodoo magic. AMAZING!
The feel - the most premium phone I have EVER had the pleasure of holding. EVER. Beats any Samsung or iPhone hands down. It's like the Bentley of phones in your hand.
Battery - I've not charged it in two days despite having everything on and taking photos and editing them loads. Does it run on magic?
Huawei in my mind have blown the competition out of the water with this phone. NOTHING can come close. I just look forward to the next gen which will hopefully have larger aperture cameras for the low light performance then it will pretty much be the perfect phone (if they sort out the sports GPS issue).

On my Note 3 I have installed 20-25 camera apps and picture apps, here on my new Mate 9 I don't know if any other app works?
I have the feeling that any other app for the camera is just 10 steps backwards!

I'm the most novice of users when it comes to cameras so I'm in no position to do any tutorials but that raises a good point because if someone as novice as me can use it so well it just further goes to show how incredible this thing is!
Press the aperture button and then all shots you take can be bokeh'd afterwards. So elegant it's unbelievable. Good old German engineering! :good:

Interesting... I bought the mate 9 because of the camera but i am totally disappointed. Horrible photo quality, totally oversharpened and things which are wide away or in the corner of the pic completely blurred.
Before the 700€ mate 9 i had a 350€ allview x2 xtreme (blu pure xl) which had a much much better camera. So for photos i use my old phone again because i just HATE the look of the mate 9 photos, they hurt in my eyes.

Good to hear other viewpoints about that!
In my case I just can say that no other camera impressed me like this one!
Maybe it help you if you also read that article (translated) or search for a tutorial on how to get everything out of that Camera?
Or maybe the "Standard" Settings aren't that good as they say, and you (we) should start to use the PRO Modus?

The camera hw and sw on the Mate 9 is really amazing. It gives perfect control about the exposure, focus and shutter release are fast. Additionally there are some nice filters to choose from. Pictures get sharp and have good dynamic range for a smartphone camera. Bear in mind that this is a 12 MP sensor, I think it has pretty good low light performance but lacks some resolution. I see it as advantage.
If the results are really disappointing, you can try to delete data and cache of the camera app to reset the settings - or contact service.

The overall look of the photos ist good, but if you zoom in, the photos from my mate 9 are just total ****, like from a normal cheap chinese 200€ phone camera. Really dissapointing.
And i DO understand something about photography. I also set focus manually before every shot because if i just press the camera button the photos are completely trash. But as you see, even with manual focus, it's not very good.

I have attached some shots I made on a walk on Poel Island, Timmendorf harbour.
Edit: As I see now, the images seem to get compressed massively during / after upload so attaching them here results in a hefty loss of quality.
Edit2: I decided not to leave them here, shrinked to 256kb each, as they do no justice to the Mate 9. Sorry.

I guess it depends on your expectations. I researched a lot too and realised its low light limitations and how the s7 or s8 would be better in that regard and technically some other cams on phones may take better photos. However I felt the difference in quality between different phones was minimal compared to phones and a real camera. Bit sharper here, better colour there, low light slightly better etc etc. Im not fussed.
But the thing that set this camera apart head and shoulders above any phone camera without any argument is the INCREDIBLE bokeh effect. Unlike other pathetic attempts by other phones this uses its two lenses elegantly and ingeniously. Everyone ive showed picture to has been mesmerised by the quality saying stuff like "this looks professional" "this is like a poster" etc without knowing why. Then i explain bokeh. And the fact that you can adjust bokeh AFTER the shot has been taken, well that's just a dream. Its exactly what i bought this thing for and it's delivered beautifully. To me it doesn't just blast phone competition out the water it beats my DSLR too because of this retrospective editing.
If i was expecting a good standard camera sure i might be a little disappointed but i knew what i wanted this for. The standard cam is id say above average. But the bokeh is simply genius. I've never had soooo many professional phenomenal photos of my baby daughter and ive only haf it 3 days! My wife even said last night "its a shame we didn't have this from when she was born."

You're right, macro shots and the bokeh effect are great but they are irrelevant for me, i don't use it. I only use my phone camera for normal photos from landscapes, cities, buildings, streets... If i had known that the mate 9 camera is only good for bokeh effect photos and normal photos are only average, i wouldn't have bought that phone and this annoys me now. So much waste of money for a camera which is only specialised on features i do not use anyway.

Yeah that makes sense mate.
According to pro reviewers you really need to use pro mode to get the most out of the cam and then you get pretty good results, regardless of bokeh. But I'm not interested in that (yet)

The wide aperture lens pics I get with this phone are unreal. People have also asked me if I am a professional photographer and I laugh. Just as novice as the next guy.
Also in the right lighting it takes outstanding pics on normal settings. Way better than my s7edge.
Now in low light or certain lighting, it's not that good. My s7edge auto adjusts and focuses way faster and produces a better image. Even my note 5 is better. I tend not to take photos during those moments if I can.
Also any camera phone will lose qaility when you zoom way in. Invest in a Dslr if you are worried about that.
Camera is outstanding overall and I was skeptical at 1st, but when in the right lighting.... Just Wow!

Went to a rock concert a few days ago and took excelent photos from the stage (10x zoom) and some videos as well.
Still haven´t tried landscapes or nature, but so far, so good!

How to make Mi MIX camera digestible

Hi folks,
i wanted to share some of my insights from 2 days of usage of Mi Mix. As for most, camera was biggest letdown. I knew it was bad, but actual experience exceeded all expectations After some digging and thanks to some threads in xda forum i found a way to make quite decent photos with little sacrifice.
So few things first:
- I'm on rooted LineageOS with Camera API2 unlocked (to be honest i didn't have to unlock it - i suppose it is unlocked with LineageOS? )
- As some noticed before, the hardware isn't that bad, it's software that spoils photos with ugly postprocessing in most cases.
- I'm using Snap Camera HDR - i tried most of software in Google Play and only in it found something like Low Light Mode - if someone know software with similar feature - pls let me know .
So what i did is basically turning off all useless postpro in Snap Camera (sharpenning, denoising, post-processing, anti-banding) and enabled Low Light Mode in all photos . From what i understand i takes series of photos and compare them to make one clean photo. You can choose how many frames to take. More you take the better picture you will get but it will also take more time to process. The processing time is biggest letdown of this method. You can't take another photo during processing so burst mode won't work. I found 5 to be best compromise - it enhances photo noticeably and takes only 1-3s to process. If u can spare more time between photos u can crank it up to 32 - with that count i had really impressive results even with ISO around 1500-2000 but the processing can take 10-30s. Another letdown as you can probably guess is that you can have some issues with moving objects - the darker it gets, the more blurred will they be (slower shutter for every frame).
Now to main dish, examples
All photos taken in 16Mpx without flash or any tripod, all taken form hand for real life comparison. As photo is processed in Snap Camera the jpg lose photo metadata so i only write that data for stock camera, for Snap Camera i write how many frames was set for Low Light Mode. I know it's not very scientific but i take photos in both softwares almost at the same time, in same light conditions and on basic auto modes.
Stock camera on left, Snap Camera on right - I'm posting 100% crops, ill post full pictures if there will be some demand

3. [ISO 1600 1/17s] [5 LLM] - small details in mediocre light
4. [ISO 160 1/33s] [32 LLM] - outdoor in good light - i took more frames to show some extra foliage details
5. [ISO 6400 1/15s] [32 LLM] - most hardcore example, very bad indoor lighting. Snap Camera algorithm made some wired border around Marshall logo, but apart form that great job.
I hope my post will help some of you with Mi Mix camera, please post your own experiences with camera - maybe there is even better solution for our phones

Download Google Camer Hdr+ from OnePlus 5 thread and all your problems will solved you wont need to do any kinds of settings and quality of photos will be much much better!!(i past this step that you are now months ago and i had tried hundred type of apps out there )

I'm considering getting this device, but the camera is the main thing holding me back (besides price for last year's SoC...)
Does the Google HDR camera make this acceptable? I don't necessarily need the BEST camera, but I'd prefer relatively fast rate of capture and at least mediocre detail. The initial reviews of the device's camera make it seem like utter trash.
Also consider I want to root the device & install something Lineage based, most devices you sacrifice camera quality when you go this route (because of lack of API 2 / hardware source).

The camera is equally bad regardless what ROM you run

No idea if there is one for it. As i said I found it on AFH, but works on my mix. Perhaps re-downloading by another browser or app?

Unfortunately no, same with edge on desktop and yandex on mobile. Running rooted stock Global MIUI 8.5.5.0.

That's the file link, I thought there is a discussion thread where I could ask for help because of the error. I also got parsing error with other ported Google Camera apks featured in XDA news, other 3rd party camera apps work though.

It's not prerequisite to have Nougat ? Stock Global ROM is under Marshmallow...

Today tried it on Epic 7.11.9 and got the same error. Didn't really invest why.

Perhaps but see my above post. Anyway it's not a ''wow'' app, just saying.

Received the Nightly OTA today, updated to V9.1.1.0 . Now I am on Nougat, the OP5 port linked in this thread works now , other versions of the google camera get installed but will close immediatly. Just tested it in my room and can't say that I see an improvement, maybe when tested outside at daylight. But I use the google camera anyway because I'm using immersive mode + dpi changes which make stock camera working less stable.

Hi. I updated yesterday to V9.1.1.0 via OTA. I tried the OP5 camera and is does a better job in lower light and image stays in better focus then stock camera. Is the OP5 the same as the google HDR camera. If not, is there a version of google hdr camera that works on Mi Mix without root? Also is there there a way to turn on some type of optical stabilization on stock camera. If I hold it really still when snapping pic the image is a lot sharper. It's actually pretty good. Just not practical to take pictures that way.
EDIT: OK. I guess no OIS on Mix...

I got my mi mix a bit more than a month ago coming from a OP3 and I was shocked by the awful camera of the mi mix. Sorry, I have no other words for it.
The op5 APK seems to make it digestible, but it's still not great. I know that for a GREAT camera I should've picked a different phone, but I didn't expect it to be like this.

Helo guys em new to this community...yeasterday i got my LG G6 ( India) ever since i took it out of the box everything was fine except the camera...The pictures seems soo grainy & full of noise...Even in the indoor lighting conditions...I was in the impression that LG g6 camera is one of the best.But my front cam tooks pictures even worst than a VGA camera phone . I havnt got any update since yesterday my software details are as follow: Android version 7.0....Build Num NRD90U....Software version V10K-IND-XX
Please suggest a fix if anybody knows...

Try outdoor first to evaluate the camera quality with good lighting.
Indoor is subjective. Were you using a flash? What types of light, florescent, incandescent or LED?

Were you trying with wide Angle? Because, wide angle sometimes get grainy..

Check camera settings they are set for lower resolutions from factory

I feel the same
got mine last week and i cannot make a decent shot with auto, even my old Iphone6 is more capable of making a good shot.
Indoors is terrible, like a oil painting and most of the time not sharp.
I dont get it, did i got a Lemon? I will try some time but if this is not getting better i will send it back. Besides that i like the phone, feels good but i will not have a phone where the camera sucks / the automode sucks. Which is the same for me, because i just want to snap pics and not work on dials (for this i have my dslr) . And coming from a Sony z3c, which also was a fine phone except the camera, the iphone is just meant as a substitute, i dont see the point in keeping that thing.

Low light photos on the G6 are poor. Nothing wrong with your phone, its just the sensor that was used. Gcam doesn't really help, IMHO. Don't try to zoom in too much and you won't notice the noise in the photo too much.

I also notice that the G6 camera is not that thing there, but I noticed that when taking a photo with the phone as still as possible they are better. My problem is the videos that are shaking a lot, especially at night.

Well this is something I haven't seen on smartphone photos yet. This is low light photo and I tried to keep phone as steady as possible. So there is quite nice details on the background, but very, very heavy processing in the area that contain movement. Is it the sensor or camera app itself that does this? It is like only certain areas of the photo are processed more than the rest.

I have almost same problem, with the main/frontal camera on LG G6 (LS 993) Sprint.
All execpt the camera working good.

You are encountering the limits of a cellphone camera. Very low light, combined with a small sensor, high ISO and low shutter speed=crappy photo. You can't defeat the laws of optics. In the lighting conditions of the photo in the snow, you would have to have a good SLR camera to capture action shots with any clarity.

Also be aware that of the 3 G6 cameras, only the rear standard one is even remotely capable of acceptable image quality in low light.
The ultra-wide is slow (f/2.4), unstabilized, and on some devices downright broken.
Front cam is simply not very good.

I know the limits of smartphone camera. But the interesting thing in my sample photo is that there is jpeg processing in only PARTS of the image. There is quite good amount of details in those parts which did not have any movement (by the object and by the device).

Yes I see what you mean. The processing artifacts seem to be concentrated on the edges of the figure. My guess is that the software is detecting the blurry edges and attempting to "sharpen", unsuccessfully.

About the front camera "issues":
if your selfies look like this:
- that's normal. my camera does the same thing (in all camera apps), I really have to edit the sh*t out of them in Photoshop to get acceptable results
I saw someone calling it an aquamarell effect and yup, that's exactly it
Really don't know what the hell is the issue with that sensor, I didn't think that 5mp pics would ever look that blurry lol

I was wondering about the camera quality right when I read that the sensor's pixel size is merely 1.12 µm, which is actually the lowest I ever saw in a mid-range to high-end phone. The standard is 1.4 µm, my 2 years old Nexus 5X even has 1.55 µm, which easily compensates for the smaller aperture of f/2.0 compared to f/1.8 in the L6.
The bigger the pixels on the sensor, the more light information (e.g. brightness, colors) they can capture. That's also the reason why it's better to have less pixels in total (e.g. 12 MP instead of 16 MP), giving each single pixel more space to capture light, especially on such small sensors.
So the low-light performance of this camera comes as no suprise to me.
This actually kept my from buying the L6, which I otherwise liked when I held it in my hands.

From my experience the pictures are ok/good, but the video done indoor is really poor, I have a strange feeling, that my old G2 made better videos....

about your low light photo. It is possible that the smudged area around the moving object is because the phone camera is taking more than one image similar to the hdr process so it can eliminate the noise, it is possible that this is the hdr itself if it is turned on. This is because the area around the moving object as well as the object itself has less info recorded for the same pixels from the image (as it was shot in one image not few like usually the hdr or low light noise reduction images are done for good quality) and thats why is not looking that sharp.
Sorry my english is not native and i am not sure if i explained it good enough. For reference check how HDR and/or image stacking noice reduction work.

I compare samsung note 4 photo vs lg g6 and I can say.... note 4 win in all ways in photo quality. Ofc dont have ultra wide buuut? Collor , sharpness, noise ? Note 4 win. I own lg g6+ h870dsu

Hi. To be honest, camera improvements over Mate 20 Pro is minimal. I own this phone right now as well as Pixel 3 XL. Previously had Mate 20 Pro for 4 month. I expected much better and more consistent shots compared to Mate 20 Pro. But it is not the case here unfortunately. Hit and miss is still the proper description of camera experience. Sure the phone is able to produce really nice photos but heaps of crappy ones popping up too (over-, underexposed, overcontrasted, out of focus...). I wish that P30 would be better than Pixel 3 XL in camera department at least and I'd finally ditch the last one.
At the same time I'd recommend P30 (non-Pro) over Mate 20 Pro due to slightly better (warm) camera tone to my test, more comfortable size, much better fingerprint scanner, flat (!) screen, better speakers (even not stereo ones), headphone jack. Wireless charging can be added for extra $50 via quite nice official Huawei wireless charging case.

P30 Lite cam test

Selfie cam quality seems a bit iffy, says 32MP but more often than not I get a worse quality image than my 8MP selfie cam on the S9 gave, similarity the 40MP setting for the rear cam I can see no difference between 10MP and 40MP, I took a photo across the room of a label on a box, zoomed in on 10MP and 40MP and they were both exactly the same as each other in terms of quality and readability, only difference I see is you lose some options with 40MP such as zoom
Focus seems fairly bad too, it borders my face to say it knows my face is there but when I check the photo it has actually focussed on something behind me or my top or something other than my face, which is slightly OOF compared
In bright sunlight the 10MP rear cam takes great pics, low light is clever but not great quality, seems like Huawei spent too much of their time adding features and gimmicks than actually making sure everything basic worked properly first

That yellowish tint is horrible. When the light is a little bit worse it appears... What is intresting - on ultra wide mode it looks much more normally, no yellow tint, colors look more realistic. My HTC 10 from 2016 do much more realistic shots and the quality is much more stable on its camera. Have you the same look on your cameras?
And imo photos are very unstable, sometimes great, sometimes sucks, low sharpness, yellow tint, candy colors, dont like it. On selfie cam at least it looks very good for me.

I don't know what's wrong with your camera. I have a HTC U11 with GCam installed, (was my previous phone) and i like to compare very often the camera side by side and for daytime they look pretty similar, sometimes i prefer the P30, sometimes U11, but on low light, there's no contest, the P30 is way ahead, as it should be. And for the consistency, we have to accept that the lack of OIS means we have to be a little more careful when we take pictures.

Hey, thanks for answer. Dont know how about u11, but i found in my HTC 10 more softness image, in p30 looks a litttle bit grainy when you zoom photo you made. Have u seen that too? Yeah, in good light the same opinion : one time htc, one time p30. But when im in the building, room etc. p30 begins to give yellow shade. Maybe ill upload some shots later to compare.
In low light sometimes shots loks unreal lighty, but sometimes camera makes perfect job

I uploaded some shots :
First are the night shots : one the most realistic regulated manualy, one in auto, one in night mode - auto and night mode looks so unreal, dont like it.
Next in room : one in auto, one on ultra wide mode which gives much more realistic colors, on auto that yellowish tint.
And shots from work one on auto which gives yellow tints, and one on 3x tele which looks much more realistic (the tiles color) than auto.
Huawei made alot of intrested things, but they didnt paid enough attention and work on main camera in my opinion.

Hello. Can anybody compare P20 PRO with P30 (not pro) in camera quality? I have had P20 Pro for a moment but "hit and miss" camera quality, especially for fast moving objects (children) forced me to sell it. Now I am thinking about P30 (not pro), but if it doesn't have OIS can I expect real any improvement in camera quality?

OIS or not you won't find much if any difference with either of those, they take too much time to process the photo once u press the shutter hence the hit or miss

This is odd. My three years old HTC U11 have IMHO better photo recurrence as P20 PRO (more hits nor miss). Also less images were blurred with U11 like with P20 PRO.

Not so big difference in cameras !
OIS and EIS both both work together for better image processing!
P30 screen size is perfect for me !

Like most of you I had much bigger expectation from P30 camera, but I am totally disappointed specially when found out cannot shoot in RAW, now I wish I went with my initial guts feeling and purchased the LG
