Unlock bootloader BrightPoint bpt us996 - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Anybody with any knowledge on weather dirty Santa works on a bpt (Bright Point) us996? Then if it does what version it needs to be in to do it and if I can just flash standard us996 firmware over it? I have tried posting in the a few other thread about it with no luck. There is info on using dirty santy on us996 but most of it is about standard unlocked version or the ucl (US Cellular) version there is almost no mention if bpt(BrightPoint) version.

Yeah you posted in multiple threads all within a few minutes and haven't waited for a reply, what do you think we're just anxiously sitting here waiting for post? SMH

Just post in multiple threads then help in other threads about samsung note 4, s5 and a couple of other older device threads. This is my last hope for some info. Just been waiting for days on response in other threads and don't want to have to rewrite the question due to dislexia. I have to reread my post multiple times to make sure it's coherent. Even then I will have to edit it after. So the post took like 10 minutes to get to where I thought it actually made sense then I actually edited it 2 times after. Just like I had to edit this one 4 times...

Better yet quit spamming the forum and start reading threads and figure it out yourself, xda is resource for the user to develope and mod your phone, not a hand holding spoon ? feed tool. It's your phone so in the end whatever you do to it is your responsibility, so proceed with caution

You right calling me a baby is well within roles of this forum... I have read threads for days not only here but rededit and android central how might time do you take to learn as much as possible before posting your question? :silly: Honestly though I challenge you to find info on the bpt version and on brightpoint in general. There is not a lot about either. Only one post on reedit about it and no comfirmation flashing standard us996 firmware worked on it and details about how Bootloader was unlocked other then they downgraded firmware. I assume was with uppercut and lgug but not sure... Hence why I am asking in large number of areas and this thread in particular so in future the knowledge is out there and searchable in Google. Way to spam well complaining about what you feel is spam btw!:fingers-crossed::highfive:

Who called you a baby? Yourself, sounds like it. With your ridiculous multiple posts. But I digress not going to reply anymore that way you and your posts will fade away into the long forgotten depths of xda. Peace

Thanks I was thinking about that. Just not sure how good LG devices are about reflashing. Honestly was going to use uppercut lgug to only other version of os put out for the bpt then back it up and try to run dirty santa then back everything up and try a os on it. Just not sure how prone to bricking these v20s are. Sounds like there is a default download mode from pressing up volume you might be able to get to if you brick it. So I have read a lot just not much for this variation of the us996.

Please explain what the difference in this model is compared to the other one thanks........
Ok pretty sure I ended up with one of those bpt one's no big problem I just won't bother rooting it.

I think it's the same deal as the us Cellular version the hardware is the same as the normal us996 but it has a custom firmware that does not allow oem unlocking. From a rededit post I read you need to roll it back one firmware version (there are only two) then you can use dirty Santa on it and change it to a firmware for a normal us996. Same bands and 2g and 3g from what I can tell. It works and i was able to add to verizon wireless. Brightpoint was a third-party seller of equipment for sprint i think. It was sold and the name had changed yet some equipment is still labeled brightpoint from lg. It's hard to find info on it.

Thanks for responding I tried this flashing us996usa us cellular nothing changed except now I have products code name Elsa_nao_ us......

Not sure what you are trying to do but you downgrade to previous build version then run dirty Santa to get TWRP on it. Then probably upgrade TWRP after that upgrade to lineage 15.1 aka Android 8.1.

LG V20 T-Mobile Rooting - Soo many threads; I have no idea what I'm doing

I've done a bit of research, searched through threads on this forum, and I still have no idea what I'm doing. The last phone I rooted was a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket.
What's the simple-man's way of rooting the T-Mobile variant of the LG V20? I see the below threads:

First which firmware are you on now? 10i, 10j, 10k, what? I think 10k is not rootable. But... If you have older firmwares then you can root with dirtycow method. it is not that hard. I think the hardest part should be to try to flash the twrp (but even that was easy at least for me an average flasher and tester). If you have any issues, the system will usually restore to the original image as a last resort.

Thanks! I'm on 10i.
I'm guessing following this guide is my best bet:

What is the 'H91810j KDZ' version I see online?

yeah. that's the original thread. and i think somene also recopied it on his own word on another thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/instruction-to-root-h918-10i-t3536472
The 10j kdz version is to be flashed with LG UP if you needed it. but up to now it is better you dont move further from 10j, because 10k is not rootable (i believe I've seen). If you want to have 10k you can flash 10j and then flash via twrp a zip of the stock rom with 10k

I'm at the last step; are there any advantages to disabling encryption? Any reason why I may/may not want to do this?

Encryption is mostly used for companies as extra security . But if i dont misremember , it is necessary to do it. Best thing would be to follow the instructions provided on the original thread.
T-Mobile LG V2010t
Hey all I new at all this and I'm trying to unlock or root my T-Mobile LG V20. I've never done any of this stuff, but I want to be able to use this phone on a network other than T-Mobile. Can anyone give this rookie ( me) some help?
T-Mobile won't unlock it for me. The day there is a balance owed on it. And when I tried the unlock app. It say failure in processing the request. Please reboot and try again.. If you can walk me through this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Why did you reply to a post from last year for this?
Rooting has nothing to do with network unlocking the phone (and if it's on 10t or really anything past 10k it's unrootable anyway).
Your best option is to get T-MOBILE to unlock it, otherwise there are some other third party websites which may be able to unlock it for a fee.

I'm sorry my bad. I'm new here and did know how to start a thread. I just thought someone here might be able to help me. I didn't want to cause any problems. But I've tried T-Mobile support,T-Mobile store' called around here and tried several online 3rd party. And because of the message I get when I try to unlock it, nobody can help. So I figured there were some smart people here, they might be able to help me (rookie). Sorry I caused you trouble.

Just wondering if 15a is downgradable i know 14b is
Yes. You can downgrade 15a with any KDZ with Uppercut.

Not to sound rude, but if you really felt like something like this needed to be "verified" then do it yourself, or don't ask.
Yes, it works. I've done it. I dont know what more you need, but I ain't doing any more than trying to help the guy out. You're on the internet, so if you need that much verification then do it yourself.

I literally answered a question, then you followed up by requesting verification on that answer. That's pretty rude dude, if that's how you handle your questions then yeah don't ask please.
But in an effort to help, I wasn't aware of any anti-rollback in place. However, since I personally wanted to try the newest update, I just took the Ota to 15a. Then, using Uppercut, went back to 12a.
If that's your plan, to go back to either 12a or 13a, I'd recommend right after Uppercut completes to do a factory reset as you will likely get overwhelmed with force closes (kdz with uppercut doesn't wipe data). Then after you're on a clean slate 12a or 13a, right away enable airplane mode so your phone doesn't hang trying to download everything. All you're interested in is enabling USB debugging for dirty santa (i assume).
Make sense?

When I ask verified I ment was it in a thread or something didn't know for 100% if you did it or read it and if I'm not mistaken the last update was also bootloader unlockable. I read the forum a lot I ment no disrespect when asking the question. As you can tell I've been a member about as long as you and come to XDA very often. Granted yes Google does work but when i looked in to it about the downgrade all I found was how the verizon V20 has gotten root witch was a old article as we all know. I unlocked mine on version 12. Thank you for your reply it was helpful and now I feel safe enough to do my wife's phone.

Yes, I have faced similar issues. But I always fall back on Uppercut. If you're truly stuck then try to wipe everything including internal storage, system, etc. Then do the Uppercut method, that always fixes every issue I've had.
Edit:to be clear, I've had plenty of issues similar to you. However, rather than identify the problem I always just wipe the slate clean. With that said, I suspect a lot of what you're facing and issues I had were kernel related.

If you wanted to troubleshoot what you have now, you could try a different kernel or even stock boot.img would be best. If still no change then always fall back to the full wipe and Uppercut.

I personally use reStock or modStock. Those both have been successful for me.
Check here for the stock boot.img https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/device-kernel-aka-boot-img-s-carrier-t3533426
No need for the shoutout or anything. I'm just passing the info along that might help.

Well my phone got so worse that i could not make a facebook call to my girl. It was always choppy like wtf. So i took your first idea. Wipe the POS, system, cache etc. And uppercut it. Now it runs snappy with 13a with root and restock. I checkout the link when i get home. As for the shoutout its for the help you give me. The devs will get their thanks for making things possible i give this phone another month and see if it works. If it dose with all bs off of it (bloatware) i make a video for those who was asking for it. Thanka for the help you are awesome and i keep you updated how my v20 is. My brothers wife has same issues i do and if my phone works maybe she will let me root hers. Just hope they dont give out a update with anti rollback

Glad you got yours taken care of. Did you do the airplane mode thing? I only bring it up because I flip flop back and forth so many times from stock unroot to root access (I'm indecisive).
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think as long as we have the kdz file, there will always be a way to downgrade. I think the kdz is a total device wide wipe/reinstall regardless of whatever version was on before.

true but i want to know if you dont mind testing new OTA when they come out to see if they can downgrade, if you dont wont to its fine i dont wont to take the chance as the phone has been a POS and hoping the full wipe/ uppercut fixes my issue forever at least, reasion im asking to test is im pretty sure my brothers wife updates her phone and i am trying to get to to let me have the phone so i can fix it and give it back so she can atleast be happy with a phone with no regrets
I have a VS995 I took the OTA 15A updated and I just used LGUP to downgrade back to 12A
Off subject question did you notice your GPS taking forever to find your location on google maps or waze while your VS995 was rooted. I kept having this issue so I went back to full stock and the issue went away.

Please do a search..this has been addressed multiple times. All US S7 Edges' are able to interchange firmwares. So, it will be ok for you to flash the T-Mobile firmware on your device.

I have been searching, but getting conflicting or dated info. Since you've stated as of today that all are able to interchange firmwares I'm hoping you can clarify for me. From what I've seen, since my S7 Edge is on G935PVPU6BRD2 (Sprint), with the 6 indicating BL 6 if I'm understanding correctly, would I still be able to odin the most recent T Mobile firmware, G935TUVS4BRC1 with the 4 indicating BL 4 (again, if I am understanding this correctly) on to it? From my searches it seems that I may not be able to flash a lower BL #. TIA

Mr Clown is correct. This info is VERY easily found with a little Google grease. Sorry if I've stepped on your toes @Mr. Clown.

My recommendation is that you flash ALL files (BL, AP..etc) from the T-Mobile firmware (or whatever carrier you want to flash). If not, you might get some annoying issues on the way.

Thanks for the reply. So the BL version is of no issue when flashing from a higher to a lower in this scenario then?

Sir, you are correct, this is a major pain in the ass that Sprint has become the only carrier to currently use this 'bootloader' or 'binary' version 6 (5th Digit from last indicates this) and you are not able to install any other firmware because the Unlocked and other carrier firmwares are still using bootloader 4. I was hopeful since Sprint came out with the 6 that the other carriers will be updating to the version 5 (being as i'm currently stuck on Sprint's bootloader 5 firmware) when the official oreo update comes to these other carriers.
Also, if your searches are turning up with possibly outdated or incomplete information it has helped me to go thru each of the carriers seperate threads for this device to locate additional and more recent information.

Yes, I have found that it is indeed a very big issue. As my password with my former carrier stated: Sprintsux1big1. Spent most of a Saturday working my way out of a soft brick bootloop after being assured here in this thread that "No, there are no issues" with downgrading to a lower bootloader on this device. I should have known better, but accepted that statement at face value based upon the source. So... now I too await the Oreo update. With scant hope that T Mobile's Oreo will come with bl 6.

that is extremely unforteanute.. sorry. You can still use sprint firmware and sim unlock the device, it's a poor substitution but a workaround.

Flashing to fix

I'm hoping flashing my phone will fix an issue I'm having. Currently VoLTE isn't working on my phone. I've chased the rabbit hole with Verizon. They ended up locking my account, and I had to go to a store to even make phone calls.
My phone model is SM-G975U1
Purchased from Samsung, unlocked.
Carrier is Verizon.
I've never used Odin. I'm used to TWRP. But I don't want to use TWRP (if it's even possible yet). Odin seems safer anyhow.
Questions are:
1. Where can I find firmware compatible with my model. Most websites look sketchy AF. Would it be better to flash Verizon's build?
1.a. does it matter if I flash for my specific model?
2. Will I be able to pull OTA/security updates once I flash?
I realize there are plenty of threads covering Odin. I will be using those as an Odin guide. Hopefully I haven't duplicated an existing thread. I'm terrified to mess up my $1200 phone.
Thank you for any help in advance!

1. Where can I find firmware compatible with my model. Most websites look sketchy AF. Would it be better to flash Verizon's build?
Use this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9/how-to/tool-frija-samsung-firmware-downloader-t3910584
I've also attached a screenshot on what your setup should look like.
1.a. Does it matter if I flash for my specific model?
SM-G975U and SM-G975U1 are ALMOST the same; the '1' denotes that the device has been shipped unlocked.
I say ALMOST.
Note: It's the SIM, in conjunction with the CSC folder, that determines which applications and system configuration that should be loaded. With a factory unlocked device straight from Samsung, you usually see very little bloat but some carrier specific features may not work or may be missing entirely (e.g., VoLTE/WiFi Calling etc). Take care because you might end up installing U software with a Verizon SIM and see MORE bloat than you originally had.
Seeing as you are looking for better compatibility, I would use SM-G975U.
2. Will I be able to pull OTA/security updates once I flash?
Absolutely. U models have, in the past at least, received faster updates than U1. With Google's more stringent update policies, this could always change.
Thanks a lot for the info, sorry for the late reply. I read it when I woke up last week, and completely forgot... I'm going to work on this today!
@ApolloisGod

How did you make out? Any progress?

LS99720a - Any way to root JUST for deleted file recovery? Don't need other stuff.

Title. I no longer use this phone but I would _love_ to be able to get deleted stuff off of it. I did this in the past with my old LG G3 and never had any issues like this phone has with getting to root. I tried it when I first got the phone, tried it a year later. never worked. Now trying 3 yrs lol. Is there anything I can do or am I SOL?
@Phoenix591 already answered this for you on Reddit. I don't know what else to tell you.
Original Reddit post for anyone else who is reading
Thats an Oreo version, and so is past the point of no return. It's unrootable. Tiny electronic fuses have been physically burned to prevent it from booting rootable firmware.
As I mentioned the last version that has the ability to return to a rootable version was ZV7 (the actually rootable versions were ZV5 or earlier, however LS997 did updates weird which ment that firmware wasn't available to flash using the same tools other models use... If on ZV6 or ZV7 its possible to root by crossflashing another model's firmware briefly ) , which was a few updates before oreo came out.

Unfortunately, the LS997 ended up being more limited than the other carrier-specific models. However, root access is getting harder to come by on new carrier-specific devices in general.
