Hi. It's been almost a year since the Essential phone has been released. I have my 2nd PH-1 rooted now. Am wondering if we are now able to make nandroid backups yet?
Thanks.

Hi there,
I have a question on backing up Nandroid. If I backup Nandroid let's say now, is it recommended to back it up again next time? Or every once in a while? What I'm planning to do is backup Nandroid every month. Is there any need for that at all or just one backup is fine? Thanks for the help.
There is no need to do a backup every month. Just do it when you are upgrading/changing to a different ROM or you're customizing something like flashing a new boot screen. If you do not have the intention to do such things then there is no point in doing a backup.
I see, thanks.
I'm looking to back up my wife's X before performing the 2.2 to 2.3 update just to make sure she doesn't lose anything (I know there's a low chance, but better safe than sorry, huh); what is considered the best backup utility out there, and, more importantly, can you back up from one release and restore to a newer one?
Thanks in advance -
I just updated to the 2.3 on my DX and all i used was the factory backupassistant on the phone, smooth sailing. Originally i had some issue with the update because I was rooted and had Bootstrapped my phone, during that time I had used Titianium Backup as well as made a mb5 nandroid backup with bootstrap through clockwork, but if she is stock has a google account then you are good to go. Just be sure that before you install the update that you sync with google/backupassistant on her phone. Good luck.
HI guys a question, I just received a new phone and I have rooted it, now my problem is I am wondering if I can restore my previous backups from my last phone to my newly rooted new phone?
as long as you don't restore wimax,i think you should be ok. risky nonetheless. I wouldn't. I'd also wait until others chime in.
edit: are you talking about nand backups? I've restored apps w/ data fine (not system).

I've restored apps and data to new phones, never system data. I've never had a problem.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Therefore restoring a nanroid will contain system files so I should just reflash rom and start a new? I was hoping for a different answer but the quick responses are appreicated.
Yea don't do a nandroid to a different phone. Too many device specific files.

Greetings,
I was searching and hunting and couldnt truly find a definitive answer and I am hoping someone or two or three could chime in.
When flashing a custom ROM and you have done a backup, could that back up be restored? Or is all previous data and such lost?
If you restore that backup you will be back to that version of whatever ROM/setup you were on prior.
For application backups it is recommended to use titanium backup or helium.

I broke my Oneplus 5t (I dropped it and the volume button got pushed right in to the case so it doesn't boot now. I hope to somehow pry the volume rocker button out of the case, so I can boot it again) and want to transfer the nandroid backup I made using TWRP from the Oneplus 5t to my soon arriving Oneplus 8Pro.
My question is how would I go about it?
Thanks.
Sorry to hear about your 5T ! I don't think you can just take the whole nandroid backup and restore it via TWRP - this includes the fact that I'm not sure whether OP8Pro TWRP can safely restore backups right now.
If you got access to your old device I would recommend going via Titanium Backup or Swift Backup, which are both very good solutions for backup and restore - at least I got very good experience with both. Titanium Backup can also restore from a nandroid backup, which would be the second option.
Thanks. I'll see what can be done about the 5T. I was thinking of restoring only the data partition, the rest of course is different between the two phones.
I wonder if that would work.

Even restoring the data partition will not work.
Titanium backup or swift backup is your best option. Titanium backup has a nandroid extractor to restore app you can try using. Although I'm uncertain how well it performs these days.
Don't even attempt this. It will not work.
