So whenever Sprint pushes its 2.1 update, will those of us with rooted heroes and custom roms have to unroot in order to receive the update? Or will we have to wait for the custom roms to support 2.1?
Just wondering, because I really want and like 2.1 but I don't want to wipe my data.
More than likely the debate here will have a 2.1 build that's fully functional long before Sprint pushes one but even if they don't after it. Gets pushed out the debate here will have one that supports root. If you ruu and take the ota update it may correct the security exploit that was used to root so you would have to wait until someone found a way to root it again.
Be pacient we have great devs on here it will only be a matter of time.
Dang predictive text
basically, wait until we have a ROM here to upgrade, don't get OTA if you want to keep root access. You might not be able to get it back
Source code released yesterday, so won't be much longer.
bye the time sprint pushes an update, there will be 3 other android phones to chose from.
edit: new android phones at sprint i mean
Yeah, Sprint sucks with updates being released in a timely manner. With my bberry, I was always using other carriers to update.
So I guess the consensus is to wait for our devs to get a full 2.1 rom working rather than unrooting and upgrading ota.
When the new dev roms come out, I was also wondering if I could save all my data, or how i could save all my data if a wipe was required.
If your phone is rooted, I would recommend an app from the market called "Backup for Root Users".

Thanks. I'll try that. Do you have any experience using it with one of the dev roms that need wipes? I am considering switching from modaco 2.0 to the aosp 2.1 but my concern was getting all my data back.
Ya it works. After you restore everything, you need to hard restart the phone (SEND+MENU+END) or it will be real slow until you do hard reset it.

Maybe there's a special way to do it, or maybe you don't backup everything, but Backup for Root Users totally effed up my restore when I moved from Fresh 1.1 to Modaco 2.0.
Actually, I tried Backup for Root Users, Astro File Manager, Titanium Backup, all of them sucked. (even after a fresh wipe of course)
I finally went back to my Fresh nandroid backup because I was getting so many FC's.
Maybe it was because it copied the APK's + "System Data" that did it, but it certainly didn't work, not smoothly anyway. :/
I've never had issues with Backup for Root Users. It takes time to restore everything & it is highly recommended that you hard reset your phone it it is finished restoring.

I've moved from Fresh to MoDaCo without wiping and it has worked just fine.
I have a backup made from Fresh, and I am planning on flashing AOSP 2.1 soon. I'll try the restore tool and tell you how it works. If it doesn't...That's what nandroid backups are for.
I have a question related to this topic. I have a rooted Hero with TTG 1.6 ROM running. Seems like right now, if I wanted to switch to a different ROM like Fresh, all I ever needed to do is copy the zip file to the SD root, reboot while holding the Home button down, and select "Install from .zip" or however it's phrased. When a new 2.1 ROM comes out, would it be that simple, or would there be more steps involved since the ROM isn't based on the current 1.5?

A factory wipe would probably be required (Not the RUU though)

How many apps does it support? Or is it even that? How much is the reware mybackup software? Do you have a link for it? And will it only work on rooted phones or can the backups be transferred to unrooted ones as well?
Hi all,
I am interested in trying custom roms for various reasons on my G2. With the recent breakthrough in allowing full root, now seems to be a good time to try.
What I don't seem to be grasping is the whole process so, here is what I think* needs to be done, and I'd appreciate a more seasoned person to set me straight
1. Obtain full root via RAGE or oneclick Visionary method
2. Install RomManager
3. Obtain Rom
Here is where I kind of get blurry on the whole topic.
Once I have the files needed, Does RomManager do a nandroid backup so I can revert back in case I want to revert back to stock? Is this how I would revert back to stock or do I need to find the original pre or post OTA rom for the g2?
Does a program like Titanium Backup allow me to backup all of my apps and settings so they are easily restored no matter the rom, or if I revert back to stock?
Thanks in advance all, I have been reading every subset of these forums but I still feel a bit scared to try and wanted to get the facts straight before trying. I'm mostly just concerned that I wouldnt be able to revert back to stock if I had to.

rom manager can perform the backup, wipe, and install of a new ROM all in one go, you just need to tell rom manager where the ROM is on the sdcard and it will ask if you want to backup and/or wipe first

i do not know if titanium backup will restore the settings within the apps, but the backed up apps will work on any custom ROM you install on your phone.
Thank you for making that more clear!
So when wiping for a new rom, you want to wipe the cache, and do a full system wipe as well?
Lastly, now that I have the stock g2 rom backed up (did it manually via recovery, not in the rommanager app) I can flash as many roms I want to try them, but really can revert back to stock based on that backup. I guess what I'm saying is, I dont have to revert to stock before trying out a new rom right?
Thanks again, this is a huge help!
With your ROM backed up, that's essentially a "screenshot" of the state of your phone at that time. So yes, you can jump from ROM to ROM, clearing data, and whenever you're ready to go back to stock, you just restore your stock ROM and pretend nothing happened.
And yes, I recommend wiping everything when flashing a new ROM. Although if you're coming from the same type of ROM (I.E HTC Sense to another HTC Sense) you can probably get away with not wiping data.
And with Titanium Backup, I do reckon that settings are kept. When you restore apps, you're given the option to restore the app or app+data.

Perfect,
Thanks for the help all, much appreciated.
Have flashed and rooted - can someone confirm
a) OTA updates no longer work - what will happen if I accidently OK the install prompts - is there any way to suppress these?
B) best app to made backups - clockwork recovery with titanium backup - if I make full nandroid - will titatium restore all apps fully?
c) I plan to test out paranoid android first then probably the modoco ROM - any other suggestions
Thanks in advance
A)No, OTA updates will not work if you're rooted. I don't know what would happen, but it wouldn't be pretty. Don't sweat it, just don't accept the update
B)I back up my apps with titanium backup, so j can restore them onto new ROMs that I flash and still have the same in app data and whatnot, but if you do a nandroid, it will backup everything into a (somewhat large) file, apps included. I use ROM manager to create my nandroids, but you can do it in clockwork mod recovery without the app too.
C)As for what ROM, its a good idea to try a few out, then settle with the one that you like and enjoy using the most. I would suggest at least try out the glazed jellybean ROM, super smooth and stable
I have successfully rooted my device using the version 2.0.0 of the toolkit. I think I'm going to donate a few euros to get the latest, the author deserves all the money.
A few questions:
What exactly is CWM? What's the difference between a backup made with titanium backup and a backup made with CWM? Is it enough to backup the system settings or do I need to backup even the apps? I mean the list of installed and purchased apps should be always available on the Google play account, at least I hope so...
Should I download the latest version of CWM (the . IMG file) and flash it with the toolkit or should I use the integrated version that seems to be IN the toolkit?
Thanks in advance for the answers.
A CWM backup will backup everything. If you restore it, your device will be exactly the same as it was when the backup was made.
Titanium backup only backs up apps and their data
But with titanium backup do I need to backup all the or only their data?
Is CWM useful even to install other Roms?
Sorry for the confusion: I'm not an expert.
Clock work mod will backup your entire android build as it is. all data, apps, settings, contacts, messages. etc
Titanium will backup apps and their data only
If you bork your software or try another rom then decide you want to go back, a Cwm backup will take you right back to the exact point you made the backup
Titanium is useful to have when changing roms because after loading a new one you can load your previous apps & data into your new rom whereas Cwm would completely overwrite the rom
In essence they are similar but perform completely different tasks
Sent from my Nexus 7
With titanium I usually just backup all user apps with data (meaning anything you have downloaded that is not part of the rom)
You cannot flash a new rom with titanium. that is what Cwm is for
Cwm deals with the roms
Titanium deals with apps

CWM is a recovery mod used for Flashing new rom while at the same time gives you handy things to do like, do a NANDROID- Creating a image for ur current rom and all its sys settings with apps and there data. U can also Flash other things like a previously created Update.zip for Titanium Backup, which is helpful after u have flashed a new rom and want all ur previous apps and data back.
A small thing a consider sharing, When Flashing a new ROM, Back up only the apps+data thing and not the System. As ur new ROM will have its own System settings (better to adjust it then than bfore). Now, also Create an update.zip, which a mentioned earlier from TitBckp Menu.
Have Fun.

I still don't get the point of backing up apps. I mean: their settings (and system settings) ok but why backup something that can be downloaded again from google play store? I guess my account keeps record of my installed and (above all) purchased apps (tapatalk only). Am I wrong?
Other question:
I'm using the stock Jelly Bean 4.1.1 rooted and I don't want to mess with cooked roms whatsoever. I rooted the device in order to get USB on the go support and TiBackup.
Will I get updates from google or I will have to manually flash a rooted version of an updated Rom? I think I will have to install CWM at the end, I guess

So, in my condition (rooted stock rom) will I get the official google updates without doing anything?
You will still get the updates but Cwm will not be able to install them.
You would need the stock recovery to apply ota updates
In reference to your previous question regarding titanium. You could re download the apps from play store after a wipe.
Titanium also restores any preferences you had saved. And in the case of games it will also restore your progress & game saves

Thanks, so there's no point in backing up the whole app, we only need its data and settings.
I haven't installed cwm yet. Did you use the toolkit downloadable from another thread in this forum? If yes, does the toolkit automatically download the latest version of cwm?
I'm not sure with the tooolkits
I have never rated them
It's much wiser to learn to do these things manually as it really doesn't take very much learning and it's always valuable to know what to do in case you bork something

Does cwm also backup sripts like link2sd and 2nd fat32 partition?
Hi- am wondering if anyone out there can help me and might be able to tell me what went wrong? I downloaded the Alliance rom 2, after flashing it I ran into all kinds of problems with processes but I am not sure it is something that I did or didn't do. After downloading, I created a nandroid backup then a factory wipe, then a wiped cache and dalvik again, flashed the rom, stayed in recovery, selected restore, selected the nandroid backup that I made, unchecked all but data, flashed the data waited then rebooted. The phone basically would not fully reboot- it is stopped by process errors but i was able to actually get to settings and scroll to application manager. Going through 'all', I read go to phone and wipe cache and data if that dosent work but neither did work. I also find that safestrap is nowhere to be found and if I choose reboot to recovery in power button menu, it takes me to the stock recovery or the bootloader- from there I tried to wipe cache but no luck. I was on Biggins latest 9.5 I think it was and NC4. I put a 32 gb chip in the pnone but not even a 10th is used and the theres less than a gb left in the phone side. The following process errors are whats coming up-
Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stoppped,
Unfortunately, Unified Daemon(EUR) has stopped
commonimservice isn't responding. Do you want to close it?- cancel, ok
Unfortunately, TouchWiz home has stopped.- ok
I hooked the phone up to the computer and successfully found the nandroid backup that I made and copied ut from the phone to a new folder. Can you tell me what your best recommendation would be to fix this so I can restore this nandroud back up an possibly remove most of the internal storage of the phone since all I need is the nandroid back- I have one or 2 other nans I can delete. Should I use Odin to restore the nandroid backup? I'm just not toally sure how to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated- thanks,
TJ

I'm assuming that you have a Retail Verizon Note 3, and not the Developer's Edition.
You should only try to restore the Nandroid backup with the Custom Recovery that you had used to create it. If you were on 4.4.2 NC4 before things got messed up, then you would restore the Nandroid (Safestrap TWRP backup) through Safestrap after you get the phone restored to stock and rooted/set up again.
Droidstyle has put together a really helpful stock restore guide here: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46461911 ).
Carefully follow the Restore to Stock instructions in Section 1 of his guide, and use Odin to flash the phone back to the "Official VRUCNC4 4.4.2." After you Odin flash the stock Firmware, make sure to boot into stock recovery and do a factory reset /wipe cache. (Odin doesn't wipe everything, so you'll need to do that to ensure you're starting fresh).
After you're restored to stock 4.4.2 NC4... then use Towelroot again to root, then install busybox, and finally install Safestrap v. 3.75. You should be able to restore your Safestrap backup after doing all that. (If you are going to restore a previous backup of Stock 4.4.2 NC4... then that should work fine).
(Don't forget that since you were on 4.4.2 NC4, you will have to Odin the Unified Kit Kat Firmware that's linked in the Biggins Rom v.9.5 thread's installation instructions (Step 7) if you're restoring a Biggins Nandroid backup). So if you are going to restore a backup of a previous Biggins v9.5 Rom... then I would probably just follow the Biggins Rom "Coming From NC4 OTA" Install instructions again and reinstall Biggins Rom, then factory reset in Safestrap and restore your Biggins backup.
Hope this helps you to get it fixed.
Hi thanks for that great bit of information. I have gotten to restoring my phone back to stock with Odin and now have almost 22.5 Gbs. vs less than 1 Gb before on the phone stotage. That must have been the slight lag. I used TowelRoot to root, installed SupersuPro, Busybox, Titanium Backup and Root Checker. My next step was installing Safestrap since I am NC4, I looked for the 3.75 but it said NC2 but I do recall the 804 version was for both. My next step would be install the rom. I had wanted to check out Alliance vs the Biggins rom I'v been on. I read this thread on installing a new rom in 10 minutes and restoring all data as if you you dont skip a beat. This has worked for me before before Biggins and also 3 other galaxy note 10" tablets I have so I'm perplexed as to why I got the 4 different "Unfortunately, such and such has stopped"… oThis is the guide I followed-
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766443
Would you not recommend this. I figured on installing the Alliance rom but would like to use this guide to restore my data
so I have my phone set up just like it was without running into the errors again. What would you be your best suggestion for getting my data restored so that I don't have to go through the painstaking task of customizing it again. If I have to stick with the Biggins ron then no big deal. My only other concern would be that if I restore that nandroud backup thus installing the rom, will I have all the crap that was filling up the phones storage to begin with? Or should I start a new flash of Biggins? If I did that then I would have to figure out how to pluck only the data from the nandroid back I have on my pc.
Thanks again for getting me out of that moss,
TJ

I would not recommend trying to flash data from your Biggins backup over to Alliance. Alliance and Biggins are both stock based , but Alliance has had so many mods done to it, that I wouldn't think importing the data over would have good results. If you want to flash Alliance, I would follow their install instructions which says to wipe first ... and then maybe try to import data from each app individually if you really have to have that backed up data on the new ROM. If you made any backups in Titanium Backup Pro, you could try to import data from apps individually to see if that would work.
Tonight when I get in I am going to try your suggestion of wipe, import data by app although I have never done it- would I gather the saved data from the app from the nandroid on my pc before putting on my sd card and back on the phone or TB Pro will have a method? I've nevr seen apps in recovery and I'm sure you can tell how rediculously unsavvy I am on this androud thing. Is this your daily driver and if so what rom do you use? I saw the JasmineRom v5.1 sportibg the multisystem (not exactly surenwhat that is) but I looks to be lollipop- if I went to that rom, I am guessing I would have to reinstall stock firmware again before getting back into a KK rom- I've done that on a tablet and was able to flash from a 5.1.1 rom right back to a 4.4.2 rom without issue but I gather phones are different?
Hey thanks again I appreciate it,

I was thinking that you had previously used Titanium Backup Pro to backup your apps prior to trying to switch roms. If that is the case, then you can just use Titanium Backup to restore app data for whichever individual apps you feel you need to restore.
If you didn't use Titanium Backup, and you only made a Safestrap/TWRP backup of the Biggins ROM... then I believe it will be more complicated with trying to import the data from individual apps if you're wanting to run Alliance ROM and import that old app data. There are tools and ways to do this, but I'm not really knowledgeable enough about them to help. You can google search and look for some of the tools if you're desperate to try to get the old data imported to a new ROM. I did a Google search and found an app called Nandroid Manager that might work for you.
Personally, I prefer to start fresh after flashing a new ROM, and set things up from scratch. I usually then run the ROM for a few days to make sure it's working like I like... then make a backup of the ROM to have if I need to restore it from messing something up.
I am currently running biggins ROM v. 9.5 on Safestrap 3.75/ stock ROM slot. It is extremely stable, everything works, and I get great battery life. I'm not really one to flash a lot of ROM's once I find one that I really like. I also have a few other Android devices that I tinker with, so I think that keeps me from wanting to constantly change the ROM on the Note 3.
As far as trying out the Jasmine Lollipop--- I would strongly advise you read and fully understand everything before you consider flashing it. Once you upgrade to the Lollipop ROM, you won't be able to revert back to KitKat and if you mess up something with the flashing process, then you will only be able to restore the phone to stock lollipop and will lose root. Since there's no current method root Lollipop, then you may be stuck without root for a while if not forever..
Hmm that nandroid manager looks like a must have. I am just going to just check out the Alliance then go back to Biggins. This way I can restore the nandroid I had but I am definitely getting TB Pro and the Nan mngr then I can see if it works with the nandroid backup I'll put back on my sd card. Did you ever check Alliance? It sounds like its loaded with too much stuff. I definitely wont be flashing the Jasmine rom- I had a feeling something was up with flashing a upgraded os on the phone vs tablet. Everything I own is Samsung- like 4 tv's, 2 Series 7 (win7) Chronos i5 & i7 notebooks, 3 10" Galaxy Note tablets not to mention the 11.6" XE700 win 7 tablet I haven't used much- not that easy to set up- did you ever see the ATIV Q? It was a convertible dual boot windows android tablet notebook- that would have been ideal but not with win 8- if I could get full android on the windows tablet- I wouldn't need anything else besides the phone- I'm told it can be done from one of the tech's at the Samsung solid state hard drive dept.
Again, much appreciated advive and info-

Your idea to restore your Biggins Nandroid backup, then use Titanium Backup Pro to backup the apps and data--- that is a good idea. You could go to the preferences section in Titanium Backup and set it to back up your apps and data to your external SD card. Once you have that backed up, you could then put on the Alliance ROM and restore individual apps and data as you please. I believe that it's usually recommended that when you restore apps and data with Titanium Backup, that you don't restore system data. You could try to restore 1 app at a time and test things out to see if you get any strange results.
I tried out Alliance on my Note 2, but haven't gotten around to trying out Alliance on my Note 3 yet. I've had such a good user experience with Biggins... and it has pretty much all the tweaks I want.... so I really haven't had a desire to try out Alliance.
I haven't heard of the ATIV Q, but it sounds pretty cool. Good luck man!
The ATIV Q got shelved I guess due to patent issues between windows and android-
Anyway ya back on Biggins- The Alliance rom had way too much goin on for me- I'll definately go the TB Pro route and follow that from now on. So glad to be back on Biggins without the phone being used up. I dont know if you experienced this but on the Biggins for some reason the NC4 modem kinda sucks. I have all 5 modems on my notebook- you may want to switch yours with up (Odin)-I thinks its the mje, nc4 & nc2 that seem to suck- the other 2 the mi9 & mj7 are the ones that are good. I Also forgot about the missing visual voicemail, I had to hit up Deuce for the file last year which I forgot to save but he since he put it in the downloads- I had one hell of a time getting it to work without error (you can't have wifi on). Do you use the xposed thing? Im not really sure what it is. Not sure if you also know this but if you go into settings, dev opts, and under 'drawing' and set window animation, transition animation and animation duration to .25 or off, it speeds up the phone and touch response. I read that on some root site and I think our phones are or were 1.5 on those scales.
I wonder if DB is going to work on or has worked on the note 4- the 4 from what I saw had just a few alterations in features, slightly boosted cpu, the image atabilation on the camera (a must), enhancements to the S Note- this is a huge tool for me especially since they have it for windows- I guess mac too.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what tricks the upcoming note 5 will have.
Thanks again bro for your help,
TJ
