Selfie quality - Xiaomi Poco F1 Real Life Review

You're beautiful and everyone knows it. That's why you take selfies. Rate this thread to express how the front-facing camera of the Xiaomi Poco F1 performs. A higher rating indicates that the front camera produces fantastic results consistently.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I've rated selfie cam average coz it's a mixed bag
In artificial lighting conditions it produces somewhat blurry images. In fact selfies in complete darkness with the screen flash look better than selfies in artificial lights such as tubelights, bulbs etc. Bokeh selfies are better with more details as compared to normal selfies.
I'm talking about selfies with 0 beautification.
I must admit that I'm coming from nexus 5 which has 1.2 mp front camera so maybe I was expecting a bit too much from the 20 mp cam of Poco f1!
Come to think of it, various hardware checking apps show front camera as 5 mp!
May be they are detecting secondary camera at the back as front camera...anyone knows any app that detects all 3 cameras (megapixel and sensor used) correctly??!

It is correct with 5mp. The Cam combines four Pixels top one Superpixel.

I thought it's detecting 5 mp is secondary back camera and mistaking it for front cam

So you mean the front camera is actually a 5 mp cam and it should be denoted as such in hardware info apps such as CPU X? This explains why the selfie quality wasn't much much better as I had expected. I'm not that impressed with this 4 pixel combining to form a Superpixel technology....at least in poor lighting conditions.
It would also mean that the secondary 5 mp camera at the back isn't mentioned in the information generated by such apps!
Shouldn't it be mentioned?
I hope I'm clear on this point.

Noticed nowadays new camera unable to capture sharp pic for grp selfie
Grp selfie is where u at front n few members at the back to ensure everyone fit it in the picture
But what happen is only ur pic is sharp while the rest quite blur
This not happened during single lens with fix focus like s7 or 2016 model
How to fix this ?

I must admit that the selfies come out blurry when taken indoors especially when taken with volume rocker. It shakes up due to the press of the button. Do you guys face that?

Yes indeed. But just verifying if it's only my phone gets blurry due to such small shakes.

It's the same with me also, even on the rear camera most of the pictures taken on artificial lighting conditions are blurry because of that shaking.

The correct name for this thread is "Blurry camera" Quality
Even with the tripod its taking blurry shot - Cool is it ?
Need a Fix for this soon

The youtube reviews were good regarding the front camera & even the photos were good. Were the review units different or the camera hardware in the 8gb+256gb?

I see the phone uses a 20MP sensor from Samsung.
This not a real 20MP camera...I mean, it can't be! Or it's very, VERY bad, even in natural light conditions.
The quality of selfies is way inferior to the 12MP sensor of the back camera.
The amount of details captured by it makes it look more like a 5-8MP sensor...

Nice travesty

It's pretty good considering Huawei and Samsung selfie are overfiltered and poor quality.
This one can see your pores and pixel bins to prevent noise.

Hi look at this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssw9H08ddlw

You guys are completely crazy or have fault devices. The frontal camera is absolutely amazing. My girlfriend have a XS and its there's no comparison, F1 is much better in every way. You just need to turn off Beautiful Mode and increase sharpness on Options to make things more clear. It's one of the best selfie cameras that I ever see in my life. Get out of here you guys.
But there's a issue that Xiaomi need to fix. The camera dont focus acurately subjects at 1 meter from device. If you use Selfie Group Mode, the problem is gone.

The issue is with focus which is fixed at a distance of around 50cm. Beyond that, objects get blurred.

Selfie Camera 16MP?

I just noticed the selfie Camera is always out of focus or not as sharp as the mega pickles it says. I turned off the beautification mode and still same results. I compared it to my S8+ and even though it has 8mp; it captures sharp focused selfies. Tsk tsk tsk!
sharpness has nothing to do with mega pixels..
maybe you can take some sample photos with the front cameras of both devices and show here to illustrate..

The OP5 selfie cam has a fixed focus.
This means that there is an optimal distance which has to be kept to the camera for the pictures to be in focus.
If you are too close or too far away from the sensor you won't be sharp and there is nothing you can do about this.
Your S8+ selfie camera has autofocus, so the distance to the camera doesn't matter.
Wrong! Lol. Megapixels plays a part in photo sharpness and quality. I'm just baffled the sheer amount of marketing they have for better pics. It's a huge b.s. Ifou have the 1+5 you can try it out! And compare it to your other phones!

Exactly.
But if you still are unhappy you might try Google Camera for selfies.
I use it on my OP3 and it uses less postprocessing so depending on the lighting,
selfies come out better in my opinion. In lowlight you will see more noise though.

it does take part in quality but not sharpness. Sharpness has to do with optical lens and sensor size. I am in the process of returning OP5 because my 6P camera is sharper and crispier. 1.55 µm on 6P vs 1.12 µm and 1.0 µm on OP5.
Full frame DSLR like Canon 5D has 6.5+ µm.
OP5 just used legacy marketing tactic using mpx size instead of actuality of the quality.

Best selfie camera I've ever had. 16mp plus a flash. Also has the selfie enhancement built into the app to use if desired.
Excellent quality. Portrait mode picture taken by Arnova's Gcam.
The front camera is outstanding.. I really love the quality of the pictures taken from the front cam.
Just a side note about the selfie camera:
It is advertised as a 16MP, but the Moto camera defaults to a 4MP (Adaptive Low Light) setting. You can manually choose the 16MP setting, but it's not selected by default. Also, I have yet to see any 3rd party camera use anything higher than 4MP on the selfie camera. I've tried multiple GCam mods, as well as several camera apps from the Gplay store, and they can only see 4MP as the highest resolution.
I'm not sure if it's a 16MP sensor that down-samples to 4MP for better low-light performance, or if it's a 4MP sensor that up-samples to 16MP. Either way, I'm not complaining about the quality of the images. They're quite nice, and take fantastic photos!

Almost every phone has a fixed focus front facing camera. The problem is that, in the X4, the focus distance is way higher than the usual. Half of the Galaxy S7 Flat units has this "problem" aswell, although way worse.
In photos where the subject is a big group of people, this is nice, as most people will be in focus. However, in a closeup selfie you will be very unfocused.
In my experience, the selfie has to be taken with at least 70% of an arm length from you to the phone, so you will be in focus.

5T features ported??

Hi All,
It seems that the 5T has a low light shooting preference over telephoto and facial unlock.
Although the latter is not something I'd ever use, I was thinking would it be possible for the camera's on the 5 to use the low light functionality of the 5T? I've read that they're similar?
If not, it's not the end of the world, I've took some great pics with my 1+ but if I could improve low light then it'd be a bonus.
I believe the 5T has a different camera sensor.
If that's the case, it won't be portable unless you change the camera altogether.
The primary camera is the same, the difference is on the second camera. Now its nos a zoom len, it will work for low Light shoots because the sensor has a different aperture.
The 5 has de 1.6x len zoom, now on the 5T, all the zoom is digital
Enviado do meu ONEPLUS A5000 através de Tapatalk
Actually I think OP5 is doing the same thing (obviously with different second camera sensor) test yourself: open camera app, cover the main camera and obviously you will see just black, here is the weird thing: change to "zoom" (2x), cover the second camera (supposed zoom lens) you'll still have image then cover the main camera boom no image! So for 2x is just a digital zoom (a good one) from the main camera, and the second camera is just used for portrait mode effect
I think this is only in low light condition. Try this again in good light and it would work as expected
google cam with HDR+ will give you better low light shots
i took a picture of the night sky the other day and it actually turned out a beautiful picture. very surprised how well it judged exposure time.
We need to wait OxygenOS 4.7 to discover how many new features will arrive also in our OnePlus 5.

?? Oreo had nothing to do with what I've asked.?
I only need to know if the camera choice!! Low light over zoom can be transferred. In all honesty the second camera never works. Cover it an nothing happens.
In low light the second camera doesn't work, and it's better that way. With an f/2.6 aperture, it just wouldn't allow enough light in to the tiny sensor to be useful. This would be true even with the pixel binning technique the 5T uses for its secondary camera.
It's also entirely possible that there's hardware involved for that feature to work properly too.

Unbelievable bull crap from a senior member. This untrue.
Second lens activates in good looking lighting automatically, you covered the lens manually so it thinks it's dark and it will take the picture with main lens.
Best way to test is to test outside, I can visually see, how it's jumping from one lens to another when zooming. Also you can see whether it used the second lens from the photo details.
You don't need to be rude dude... Yes I'm senior member but I'm not a God that know how everything works, I just did that test and see that results, didn't know how this dual camera works. So I researched a bit and found what you said. My bad

Not likely since you have to have a lower aperture (1.7 or so) a Tele lens aperture is usually higher and allows less light to reach the sensor. With this, it is highly unlikely to have a software update that will allow the 5 to reproduce the 5T's low light photo quality.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

Rear Camera
Well for a upper middrange phone not so good. I mean yes you can caught some good images but without OIS you can notice some blur sometimes. Also before using it for first time I recommend to turn off hdr auto and full screen camera because it can effect the image quality.
Front Camera
I must admit that front one is much much better than rear. For group photos or alone you can really capture a great photo. Also selfies sometimes can be too detailed, and that only thing that i don't like. 16 mp plus 8 mp dual one makes a great combination.
Rear camera is bad, nailing focus even in a decently lighted environment is a hit and miss. Don't even dare to expect an S7 quality.
Front camera is one of the best I've seen, specially in video calls.
Rear camera doesn't have portrait mode and pics are not of good quality , Daylight photos are good but not the best ones and low light camera isn't that good as it was shown on the teaser.
front cam is much better than rear cam.
i have been satisfied with the results of the front and rear cam. the front is from another world, but the rear is not the best but of course it is very good as well!!! i have enjoyed it in all conditions.

Pro mode is very limited compared to the Galaxy S7/S8 stock camera app, we can't control exposure time. Is there a way to enable that feature? I think this phone has all what it takes to do the same.

According to pocket-link, this phone can shoot multiple frame resulting in 109 megapixel photos. I haven't read from other sites before.

All of this but no mention of the zoom capabilities.
Obviously optical zoom would have been mentioned, but I'm wondering how the digital zoom is before the image starts breaking up.

Really holds up well
Im holding off at present, some of the pics look way to soft, and way to much colour saturation.
Don't expect huge improvements from what they've delivered in the past. They do have some new tech to play with to improve night shots thanks to the 48MP sensor (although missing OIS). And some will prefer the superior front cam capabilities for sure.
New update, also enables EIS on 4k 60 fps filming, from this video:

DXoMark does smartphones as 'selfie' (front) and 'mobile' (rear) with separate reviews. I imagine the criteria is different so they can't use one score for both still. If you look at any rear cam review the photos are a mix of people and objects, while the front cam reviews are practically entirely people based (hence 'selfie' score). It won't necessarily get the same score as a rear cam as it does a selfie cam since there is different criteria to keep even testing.
