Hey all,
Maybe some of you who are way smarter than me can look into this. A little background: Currently have 2 Essential phones on the T-Mobile. Ran one phone stock, upgraded to Android PIE out of the box, for about a week. Noticed it was having connection problems. The data would cut in and out (as reported by others). The signal bars were all over the place, full bars, no bars etc...
The second phone was unlocked and flashed to several different PH-1 roms, never updated to PIE. Noticed on almost all the roms when WIFI was turned on then off the phone would drop data LTE connection and it wouldn't come back. The only way found to get it back is to flip airplane mode on/off. Finally settled on AOSiP 8.1. It too had connection issues with the WIFI on/off:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/aosip-8-1-official-t3735143
In summary, both phones had signal problems, bars jumping all over. Both phones had predictable data connection loss after WIFI on/off and no SMS messaging. Only Airplane mode would restore data and SMS.
Here are the current base-bands of each phone:
Phone1 (moon black,AOSIP): 2.0.c4-M2.0.3
Phone2 (halo grey, had PIE for a week, but now on AOSIP): 2.0.c4-M1.3.1
Ok now for the fix (?). Made a few changes to Phone1. Signal is almost full bars, and it doesn't drop signal after WIFI. SMS works fine. If fact its been working fine all day with no issues. Here are the changes I made to both phones:
Made the following changes on both phones:
1. Turned off Enhanced LTE Mode
2. Set Preferred network type to LTE/WCDMA
2. Removed all APN's except for T-Mobile, with the following:
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy: none
Port: none
Username: none
Password: none
Server: none
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: none
MMS Port: none
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Auth Type: none
APN TYPE: default,mms,supl,hipri,admin,mobile,dun
APN protocol: IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv6
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
In my testing I found that setting the APN protocol to IPv6 seemed to be what fixed the WIFI bug. Stock it was set to IPv6/IPv4. So far so good. Phone1 one has been solid all day, no connection issues. Using bluetooth headset, WIFI etc.
Now I'm confused about Phone2. It has the same settings, and the WIFI bug is gone, and its also working almost all the time. The only problem it has now is if I let it sit for 20min or so, the data connection gets lost and have to use Airplane mode to get it back.
Summary: Both phones were having signal drops and data connection issues on T-Mobile. Doing the above steps solved all the problems on Phone1. It has perfect signal and has been working fine all day. I can't break it. Most of Phone2's problems have been solved, except when it goes to sleep it looses data connection and I have to use airplane mode on/off to fix. Both phones are identical except for the baseband.
Anyone know where I could find the baseband that’s running on Phone1 so I could flash to Phone2?
Hope this is of some help to those of you on T-Mobile and having signal problems.

Sorry, found the radio's here:

Flashed the Package without boot: PPR1.180610.091 AFH (latest pie 9.0 august) to Phone2.
New baseband on phone 2 is 2.0.c4-m2.0.5.
Will get back to you on if it solved all my T-Mobile issues.
But why didn't the baseband get updated with the official OTA update to PIE?

please keep us posted.
Setting roaming to IPv6 is likely to cause a *large* number of roaming providers to fail connections. If you never actually roam you may not care, but if you do....
The "factory" setup in the SIM and firmware for Pie on my Essential has IPv6 only for native on the "FAST" APN, but IPV4 for roaming -- which is what I've seen on other devices and used on T-Mobile for the last several years without problems. I also have no issues with mobile data disappearing and not reconnecting when I go on and off WiFi.
Additionally setting the bandplan to LTE/HSPA will prevent 3g (and 2g) connections from coming up at all in my experience. I ran it there for a bit but put it back to "Global" and have better results in marginal service areas -- a slow connection is better than none!

Hey all,
Since my original post I've only had signal problems twice, which a simple air plane mode fixed. I am not able to reproduce either.
The radio upgrade made a huge difference.
And we don't roam where we are, so roaming isn't an issue for us.

I've just realised that ever since I updated to GRI40, my 3g/EDGE/HSDPA connections don't work at all.
I've tried flashing radios 5.08, 5.12 and even 4.06, but it just doesn't seem to pick up my data connection at all. All I've got is standard connection, but no 3g/E/H icon to tell me that i've got a data connection...???

Saw this post in the First Impressions of GRI40 thread (see here).
I also have this problem. It's intermittent, but currently I'm at home, I turned off wifi, and my phone shows bars of signals, but no 2g/3g icon at all. Normally I can get both 2g/3g at home just find.
Tried turning off stuff like Juicedefender (worried about it messing things up). Rebooted the phone, toggled 2g/3g, nothing... Intermittent as earlier today I was using 2g and 3g with no problems...
Anyone else with this problem?
I'm on Rogers Canada, and am using a stock unrooted Nexus One.
Might have fixed it... was googling around. Right after GRI40 I had 2 APNs (I've never set them up.. there by default).
Replaced it with these values from this thread:
http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/...ess-apn-settings-data-mms-here.html#post47938
Name: Rogers

This is obviously only a rogers fix, original poster who had this problem was Vodafone UK.. maybe APN problem?
I am having this issue, too. 3G doesn't work at all. I have to tell the phone to only stay on Edge and then it will stay connected. In fact if I uncheck that box, I lose everything including voice/text
I filled in the new settings in APN but im getting 2G instead of 3G ?
Anyone knows what i did wrong ? And the airtel "customer help" are not exactly helping me in any way.

For Airtel mobile office your settings are ok just remove proxy and port. if you are trying to setup airtel live then apn should be airtelfun.com and proxy and port remains. most of the android phone will not display 3G instead it will show H for HSPDA. if 3G signal is weak it will switch back to edge and will show "E". try changing the mode to WCDMA only. then check.
as an alternate give these a try for data.
1. Homepage – any page you want to set.
2. User Name – Blank
3. Password – Blank
4. Proxy – Enabled/yes.
5. Proxy and Server Adress – 202.56.231.117
6. Proxy and Server Port – 8080
7. Data bearer – GPRS or Packet Data.
8. Access Point Name – airtelgprs.com
9. Authentication Type – Normal
10. Use preferred access point – No
Even I am having the same problem. My settings are correct as stated above but I am getting only 2G. 3G hasnt come up even once and I have travelled over 20 Kms across the length of Bombay, so coverage cannot be an issue. Do I need to change anything else?
Open Dialer and type this *#*#4636#*#*
Select the drop-down that says "Phone Information". From there, scroll down to where it should say "WCDMA preferred", and change it to "WCDMA only". Use the back key to get out. now check if your phone is able to detect 3G network. once it connects to 3G and you see H.
Airtel has worst network in mumbai so for phone to stay connected on 3G network signal strenght should be above -125db or else phone will switch back to 2G network. may be because of low signal stength you are not able to get 3G

Hey Smokin,
I tried this method to force WCDMA mode on my Samsung Captivate, but had no luck getting the 3g symbol on my phone. Instead I still have the E symbol for edge.
I have been trying since Saturday to get Airtel to put their 3g service on my phone, but had no luck. I went to a Airtel shop yesterday here in Manipal to get 3g manually activated on my phone. That didn't do any good as well.
I believe like you said that the problem isn't the activation aspect of 3g, but rather the signal strength for 3g is too low to be picked up by android phones. When I went to the Airtel shop the other day I noticed that most of the people there with working 3g phones had either a blackberry or iphone device.
If this is actually the case, I have no choice but to switch to another cell phone service provider who provides 3g service with a "android-friendly" signal strength. Is there such a thing?
Can you try with any of 3g enabled handset to see if you get 3g network in Nokia phones like n95 it should Show 3.5g. Also was your phone able to see Airtel network in wcdma only mode.

Hey,
I don't have any other handset with 3g capability nor do my buddies here. When I put the phone in WCDMA mode, I didn't get a signal for the GSM Airtel Network.
Apparently other Galaxy S owners have been having problems with Airtel's 3g network (Read at the comment section below: mobilegyaan.com/airtel-3g-karnataka-price).
Maybe Airtel will resolve this soon?
Edit: 3g is working now on my handset with Airtel network in Manipal.

Airtel launched its 3g service in Hyderabad today. And I was facing similar problems as others here. Selecting "WCDMA Only" did the trick for me and now I have the 'H' symbol on my HTC Wildfire.
However, I checked the signal strength and it is displaying -81dBm 16 asu. Does this mean I won't be able to access 3g with "WCDMA preferred" selected as I often roam and would like to fall back on 2g in the absence of 3g signal.
Also, will the above mentioned signal strength affect the call quality in any way?
Thanks for your help..

-81dBm is greater than -124dBm it is a good signal strength. problem with WCDMA only mode is if there is no 3G signal there will be no service. best would be to keep on on WCDMA prefered.

Not to sound like a completely dumb guy, but I have a Nexus One and resolved my issue by texting "3G" to 121 on Airtel. That activated 3G service and with the APN settings above, I started getting HSDPA speeds.
Hope that helps someone. Took me an hour to find that part....
So i activated 3g n put a 3g pack...
Galaxy fit..... But this goddamn Airtel gives me like 15kb/s in new Bombay....... Calling those jerks CC Temme some Bull**** that Airtel operating 3g In Maharashtra on Vodafone and Idea networks... Tells me to manually select Vodafone or idea network! (absurd! Airtel Sim registered on Vodafone network )
So i try that also... Speed 20kb/s...
Bharti mittal should resign!!
Get a Vodafone Sim... I get like 4.84mbps on cell which is terrific!!

Have fun!
I came from my skyrocket that had LTE so im still on the LTE plan.
i copied my APN settings from the sky rocket to the N4 and have been enjoying the slow measly 4-5mb download on GOOD days but averaging 1-3mb most days.
i have the older radio AND can enable the LTE setting and have it stick but dont need it as im currently on WCDMA preferred.
my phone status shows HSPA+ ATT when it usd to show just HSPA:10 or :15 etc what ever number it shows at the time.
now i'm getting consistent speed tests over 14mb down and 1mb up
I'm currently in the Lawrenceville/Duluth Area of Georgia if that helps
I have enclosed some screen shots.
anyone else noticing this?
its really nice to have these speeds now.
You should block out your phone number on the first screenshot lol.

I'm curious to see what your APN settings are now. Noticed any obvious differences in original/default APN?
Im not even using the LTE radio lol
i just saw an email at my company that said this:
Dear all,
I know that it's been a long time coming, but hopefully you all have already experienced, and felt, the new in building wireless solution that AT&T has deployed for us. As part of the contract renewal that we did a few months ago we negotiated with AT&T to deploy, at their cost, a new in-building cell system to solve our cell phone coverage challenges. This system went fully live earlier this week, and we now have across buildings A and B full 3G, 4G and LTE coverage for AT&T with a state of the art system.
I hope that all of you enjoy the new system and extended coverage!
Thank you!

so it looks like that AT&T came out and deployed a new tower that gives us full range of coverage including 3G, 4G and LTE
since i'm NOT using LTE an band right now and on 4G that means that AT&Ts NEW towers have the capability of HSPA+ since we are using it right now but its just not deployed everywhere yet.
im spoiled now and wont want to go back home to my normal AT&T tower
Here are my APN settings
APN Settings:
Name: AT&T US HSPA+ (This doesn’t matter)
APN: pta

this along with being on an LTE plan from my skyrocket is giving me these speeds as well plus the new tower implementation at work.
Hey Everyone,
I need the AT&T APN Settings for the Galaxy S4. I flashed to Foxhound Rom(I9505 rom) and flashed a AT&T Kernel but now my data speeds are all out of whack.
Here's the settings I've tried so far http://rootzwiki.com/topic/31135-att-apns-for-custom-roms/, but it's still too slow on the speedtest app compared to what I was getting before.
Also I noticed after using the above settings, my "Network Mode" (found in the Mobile Network settings) keeps switching from what I set it to -- LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) -- automatically to WCDMA/GSM (auto connect).
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the speedy response Thermawolf. Currently I have all 5 APNs plugged in, and I'm still getting these speeds (3 down /.5 up) in an area where I was confirmed to have LTE. Should I only be using one APN?

Hmmmm I don't know what you mean by plugged in? The phone itself should acquire these APN's when it scans for networks. Make sure you are just using the ATT LTE apn it acquires and then go back and select GSM/LTE/CDMA or something like that and it should stick and hopefully fix your speed. Although your area might not have full LTE yet.

I had to manually enter new APNs into my phone. what I did just now was delete the other 2-3 APNs (Cingular, Cingular MMS) and now my speeds are back up to 20Mbps down, but my upload is at 4.5Mbps up. Is the upload speed normally that much lower?

That is an extremely low upload for LTE that's for sure. I would run a couple tests and see what happens. It could also be ROM related as I am running Task650 AOKP.
Also I updated my post with my APN settings.
what modem are you using? Also, I noticed you are sprint, is this for the same device?
Galaxy S4 - no LTE option?
I recently bought an unlocked unbranded Galaxy S4 GT-I9500. I let it (probably a bad judgement call) auto update via WIFI from 4.2 to 4.3 before it ever had a sim chip in it. I'm assuming not an ATT update, no branded bloatware. Root was easy with Odin. So...now on ATT, but not getting LTE? Added the APN settings shown above, but found no LTE listed in the Network mode options. No Network access when I select that APN either. WCDMA/GSM auto and single option for each only thing there.
Any ideas / suggestions?
Maybe I just need to find the right ROM, I like Cyanogenmod 11 kitkat, and get that on there and see what happens.

I do believe that that the i9500 does not have LTE.

You're correct the i9505 does
Hello,
Got mt XL today from EE and I can happily tell you that WiFi calling and VoLTE work straight out of the box. WiFi calling needed to be enabled in the phone settings but VoLTE was on by default. Top job :good:
For those in the US I suppose this means the phone can do it, you just need your network to have it enabled.

I'm on EE yet it's blurred out the option to use it ?

Doesn't matter, it's enabled by default and you can't disable it.
Ignore the slider, if you make a call you'll see it sticks to 4G and doesn't drop down to 3G
Yep.... Worked straight out of the box for me too,
God this phone is slick
Happy days XD
Great to see an Android phone that is running the latest software and supports VoLTE and WiFi Calling. A true iPhone competitor.
Just need Three, Vodafone and O2 to add support now too
How are people finding the phone on EE after a few days use? Has anyone noticed if the reception is any better / worse than their previous handsets? I read somewhere the top half is glass so the signal isn't hampered by the aluminium.
Also, has anyone ran any speedtests?
I've been running a few days, in the house it defaults to wifi due to the reception being low since I live in a dip on the coast near people who moaned about having masts near them, I still get about a 30-40meg data connection it just prefers the wifi in the house, at work on the other hand I'm seeing speeds around 60meg and reception is great, far better than it was on O2 with my S6/Note 7, but the reception does seem fine and also seems to still work inside big shops more than other devices.
as for O2 getting on wifi calling, it wont happen, they want to force people to use tugo, also it's the same firm that once told me 3G was a failure and would never catch on.
Thanks for the update @Belimawr, if you have wifi calling on is there an icon for it? And does it only kick in if you have poor signal? On my S7 if i have wifi calling on, it calls / texts over that 100% of the time even if I'm in a good signal area.
@FSOP seems to depend on the wifi, it seems to prefer the wifi if the data speed is better than the 4G, if the wifi outperforms the 4G it defaults to the wifi. so my wifi in the house (80meg connection) is always better than the 4G so it will always go to that first, but the openzone we have at work online gives about 5meg so it stays on 4G for calling, so I'm guessing someway it gauges performance to decide how to connect.
as for knowing how you are calling, it seems to be the network thing that tells you who you are connected to, normally it will just show "EE" but when it goes over to wifi calling it changes over to "EE Wi-Fi Calling" it is the same in the quick access menu on the notifications draw.

Great, thanks for that
On my S7 there's an icon, so it sounds like it's a bit more like the iPhone where it changes the operator from EE to EE WiFi-Call
thank you OP. can you also take screenshots of the APN settings that are used? Maybe something could be carried over to Nexus line.
Every time I access the settings under phone (dialing *#*#4636#*#*)info and enable it, it gets disabled automatically. Does anyone have any idea how to fix that?

It's disabled by default on the Pixel with EE anyway, changing toggles won't disable it

That's a shame! Thanks a lot for letting me know, I spent a lot of time fooling around thinking that something was not being done right

There is no apn for WiFi calling / volte.
Depending on device it's done via carrier settings (pixel) or ims settings (S7 other branded devices)
