Hmm I havent found the APN info yet for AT&T I tried a google search but there are so many different types the process is below but you will need the info. I will keep looking for APN settings.
Ok so follow these instructions.
1. Go to settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
2. Then press menu and press New APN
Try these I'm not sure if they will work I got them from a friend who has an AT&T Atrix but that phone is 4G. You wont lose anything from trying.

Ok thanks ill give it a shot . I appreciate you trying to help .
Tried it and it does not seem to have changed anything .
Under network mode in the mobile network settings i have 3 choices also where i can pick GSM only or CDMA only or a combo preferred one and when i set it preferred the E at the top switches to an H ?.
It says i am in HSPA mode ? under phone info when i enable this ?.
I am just accustomed to seeing the 3g symbol at the top so i am not sure whats going on.

Yeah i was not sure if it was or was not .
All the screen caps i have seen thus far of people with the phone say 3G so i am still a little miffed atm .

No problem. So is your problem solved?
If what he says is true and 3g is H then i guess it is .
Id prefer to see 3g up at the top just for the sake of it but i guess ill have to live with H .
I came from my skyrocket that had LTE so im still on the LTE plan.
i copied my APN settings from the sky rocket to the N4 and have been enjoying the slow measly 4-5mb download on GOOD days but averaging 1-3mb most days.
i have the older radio AND can enable the LTE setting and have it stick but dont need it as im currently on WCDMA preferred.
my phone status shows HSPA+ ATT when it usd to show just HSPA:10 or :15 etc what ever number it shows at the time.
now i'm getting consistent speed tests over 14mb down and 1mb up
I'm currently in the Lawrenceville/Duluth Area of Georgia if that helps
I have enclosed some screen shots.
anyone else noticing this?
its really nice to have these speeds now.
You should block out your phone number on the first screenshot lol.

I'm curious to see what your APN settings are now. Noticed any obvious differences in original/default APN?
Im not even using the LTE radio lol
i just saw an email at my company that said this:
Dear all,
I know that it's been a long time coming, but hopefully you all have already experienced, and felt, the new in building wireless solution that AT&T has deployed for us. As part of the contract renewal that we did a few months ago we negotiated with AT&T to deploy, at their cost, a new in-building cell system to solve our cell phone coverage challenges. This system went fully live earlier this week, and we now have across buildings A and B full 3G, 4G and LTE coverage for AT&T with a state of the art system.
I hope that all of you enjoy the new system and extended coverage!
Thank you!

so it looks like that AT&T came out and deployed a new tower that gives us full range of coverage including 3G, 4G and LTE
since i'm NOT using LTE an band right now and on 4G that means that AT&Ts NEW towers have the capability of HSPA+ since we are using it right now but its just not deployed everywhere yet.
im spoiled now and wont want to go back home to my normal AT&T tower
Here are my APN settings

this along with being on an LTE plan from my skyrocket is giving me these speeds as well plus the new tower implementation at work.
Hey Everyone,
I need the AT&T APN Settings for the Galaxy S4. I flashed to Foxhound Rom(I9505 rom) and flashed a AT&T Kernel but now my data speeds are all out of whack.
Here's the settings I've tried so far http://rootzwiki.com/topic/31135-att-apns-for-custom-roms/, but it's still too slow on the speedtest app compared to what I was getting before.
Also I noticed after using the above settings, my "Network Mode" (found in the Mobile Network settings) keeps switching from what I set it to -- LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) -- automatically to WCDMA/GSM (auto connect).
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the speedy response Thermawolf. Currently I have all 5 APNs plugged in, and I'm still getting these speeds (3 down /.5 up) in an area where I was confirmed to have LTE. Should I only be using one APN?

Hmmmm I don't know what you mean by plugged in? The phone itself should acquire these APN's when it scans for networks. Make sure you are just using the ATT LTE apn it acquires and then go back and select GSM/LTE/CDMA or something like that and it should stick and hopefully fix your speed. Although your area might not have full LTE yet.
Ok here's my exact ATT LTE settings from the APN, sorry I didn't realize I could be more specific with this lol, still learning as I go myself

I had to manually enter new APNs into my phone. what I did just now was delete the other 2-3 APNs (Cingular, Cingular MMS) and now my speeds are back up to 20Mbps down, but my upload is at 4.5Mbps up. Is the upload speed normally that much lower?

That is an extremely low upload for LTE that's for sure. I would run a couple tests and see what happens. It could also be ROM related as I am running Task650 AOKP.
Also I updated my post with my APN settings.
what modem are you using? Also, I noticed you are sprint, is this for the same device?
Galaxy S4 - no LTE option?
I recently bought an unlocked unbranded Galaxy S4 GT-I9500. I let it (probably a bad judgement call) auto update via WIFI from 4.2 to 4.3 before it ever had a sim chip in it. I'm assuming not an ATT update, no branded bloatware. Root was easy with Odin. So...now on ATT, but not getting LTE? Added the APN settings shown above, but found no LTE listed in the Network mode options. No Network access when I select that APN either. WCDMA/GSM auto and single option for each only thing there.
Any ideas / suggestions?
Maybe I just need to find the right ROM, I like Cyanogenmod 11 kitkat, and get that on there and see what happens.

For some reason, in every ROM for L7 (at least CM based), the 3G doesn't work. I still have to try 3G on stock to see if it is a problem of the ROM or the phone but after some searching, I found that I'm not the only one with this problem. I have tried going to *#*#4636#*#* menu and forcing the phone to WCDMA only but that makes me have no network service at all, only if I put it to GSM only it will work. Is there any fix for this?

Contacted my network provider, and I configured the APN correctly as they told me, still don't get 3G, only H. It's set to GSM Auto PRL since I can't set it to WCDMA preffered, so it should be getting 3G, but I can get 3G basically nowhere in my country while my old phone (Galaxy Gio) could get 3G almost anywhere in my country.. don't know what's going on on
By the way, in the Phone info (*#*#4636#*#*) menu, when I change to WCDMA preferred, it always goes back to GSM Auto (PRL) by itself. Does the problem have to do with this?

H stands for 3G HSDPA which provides theoretical speeds up to 7.2Mbps.
3G stands for 3G UMTS which provides speed to 3.6Mbps (not sure)
Its better to get H than 3G. But both stand for 3G.
Some ROMs show H, some show only 3G (like Jelly Bean Mini Project), and some show both ...
It is best to set to Auto Mode (GSM/WCDMA) or 3G preferred, rather than 3G only because in some areas where 3G isn't available, battery will drain high searching for network. In that cases, if in Auto Mode or 3G preferred, it will latch on to 2G and back to 3G when you get 3G coverage!

Hey all,
Maybe some of you who are way smarter than me can look into this. A little background: Currently have 2 Essential phones on the T-Mobile. Ran one phone stock, upgraded to Android PIE out of the box, for about a week. Noticed it was having connection problems. The data would cut in and out (as reported by others). The signal bars were all over the place, full bars, no bars etc...
The second phone was unlocked and flashed to several different PH-1 roms, never updated to PIE. Noticed on almost all the roms when WIFI was turned on then off the phone would drop data LTE connection and it wouldn't come back. The only way found to get it back is to flip airplane mode on/off. Finally settled on AOSiP 8.1. It too had connection issues with the WIFI on/off:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/aosip-8-1-official-t3735143
In summary, both phones had signal problems, bars jumping all over. Both phones had predictable data connection loss after WIFI on/off and no SMS messaging. Only Airplane mode would restore data and SMS.
Here are the current base-bands of each phone:
Phone1 (moon black,AOSIP): 2.0.c4-M2.0.3
Phone2 (halo grey, had PIE for a week, but now on AOSIP): 2.0.c4-M1.3.1
Ok now for the fix (?). Made a few changes to Phone1. Signal is almost full bars, and it doesn't drop signal after WIFI. SMS works fine. If fact its been working fine all day with no issues. Here are the changes I made to both phones:
Made the following changes on both phones:
1. Turned off Enhanced LTE Mode
2. Set Preferred network type to LTE/WCDMA
2. Removed all APN's except for T-Mobile, with the following:
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy: none
Port: none
Username: none
Password: none
Server: none
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: none
MMS Port: none
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Auth Type: none
APN TYPE: default,mms,supl,hipri,admin,mobile,dun
APN protocol: IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv6
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
In my testing I found that setting the APN protocol to IPv6 seemed to be what fixed the WIFI bug. Stock it was set to IPv6/IPv4. So far so good. Phone1 one has been solid all day, no connection issues. Using bluetooth headset, WIFI etc.
Now I'm confused about Phone2. It has the same settings, and the WIFI bug is gone, and its also working almost all the time. The only problem it has now is if I let it sit for 20min or so, the data connection gets lost and have to use Airplane mode to get it back.
Summary: Both phones were having signal drops and data connection issues on T-Mobile. Doing the above steps solved all the problems on Phone1. It has perfect signal and has been working fine all day. I can't break it. Most of Phone2's problems have been solved, except when it goes to sleep it looses data connection and I have to use airplane mode on/off to fix. Both phones are identical except for the baseband.
Anyone know where I could find the baseband that’s running on Phone1 so I could flash to Phone2?
Hope this is of some help to those of you on T-Mobile and having signal problems.

######### UPDATE#########
Sorry, found the radio's here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/stock-7-1-1-nmj20d-t3701681
Flashed the Package without boot: PPR1.180610.091 AFH (latest pie 9.0 august) to Phone2.
New baseband on phone 2 is 2.0.c4-m2.0.5.
Will get back to you on if it solved all my T-Mobile issues.
But why didn't the baseband get updated with the official OTA update to PIE?

Setting roaming to IPv6 is likely to cause a *large* number of roaming providers to fail connections. If you never actually roam you may not care, but if you do....
The "factory" setup in the SIM and firmware for Pie on my Essential has IPv6 only for native on the "FAST" APN, but IPV4 for roaming -- which is what I've seen on other devices and used on T-Mobile for the last several years without problems. I also have no issues with mobile data disappearing and not reconnecting when I go on and off WiFi.
Additionally setting the bandplan to LTE/HSPA will prevent 3g (and 2g) connections from coming up at all in my experience. I ran it there for a bit but put it back to "Global" and have better results in marginal service areas -- a slow connection is better than none!

Hey all,
Since my original post I've only had signal problems twice, which a simple air plane mode fixed. I am not able to reproduce either.
The radio upgrade made a huge difference.
And we don't roam where we are, so roaming isn't an issue for us.
