You need to put the phone in download mode.
Power off your Samsung phone, press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power keys at the same time.
Release all three buttons when Samsung phone reboot and you see a warning sign.
Press Volume Up to enter the main screen of Recovery mode.

Soft Bricked Help!

Trying to fix a friends Vibrant...
He was running jk6 software when the phone bricked itself in his pocket (?).
Now, the only thing we can do is access download mode by holding down the power button.
If I run Odin, and try to start up the phone into download mode, none of the COM Ports detect the phone, even though he is in download mode. Conventional methods don't work (Starting up ODIN, Plug in USB, hold down volume buttons). Only way I access download mode is by holding the power button down.
Any Help?
Try switching to a different USB port.

You need to make sure the computer has the usb drivers installed. Simple plug and play won't work. Its good you can get into download mode. Look in the bible sticky and download and install the usb drivers. Also if its windows vista or 7, when you open odin don't double click it. Right click and run as administrator. Also, make sure you open odin first before you connect the phone to the computer. Good luck.

Drivers have already been installed.
I can access download mode perfectly using my Vibrant and ODIN recognizes it, but when i plug my friends Vibrant in, thats when the problems happen.
For the record, when I plug my friends Vibrant into the USB port..a message pops up saying that one of the usb devices attached has malfunctioned (Code 43). I'm thinking this is directly related to ODIN not recognizing it (although it recognizes mine)
If you can reach download mode fear not its not an issue with the phone its definitely a problem with the drivers or maybe even try a different usb cable.
Yea, but I can only reach download mode. Phone will not boot into recovery, or even start up, just download mode lol. And i dont think its the USB, seeing as how i can plug in my other Vibrant and odin detects it immediately (on the same computer).

Well if the very same usb cable and port recognizes your phone (I'm assuming you both have the same exact phones) and odin recognizes your phone and not his, then his usb port on his phone must be where the problem lies... Try looking it, or even opening your phone and cleaning his usb port or something. Or try a different computer. if you can get into download mode don't worry, you'll find a way to fix your phone.
Still having the same problems. Tried a different USB cable, different computer running Odin...no luck. Only my computer detects that the phone even exists by shooting me an error saying that the device has malfunctioned. Phone just stays in download mode...Odin doesnt detect it. I've tried different methods to have ODIN detect it and still nothing.
Had to go through this too, but didn't have another phone in download mode to test against.
Win7 x64, tried a bunch of different drivers, but in the end was running the ones that come with Samsung Kies. In my case it ended up working without the original samsung cable (just a generic one), and with a USB port hanging right off my motherboard at the back of my tower. I have two USB ports on the front of my tower and they always errored, no matter what combinations I tried (including the same cable and driver). But when I switched to a port at the back, I got past the malfunctioning USB device error. Also, it seemed like Odin likes to be running when the phone boots into download mode. This took hours but phone runs perfectly now.

Odin/COM port issue

Sup guys, I've got a following problem, basically when I connect my Galaxy 3 to USB port Odin detects is as COM3, however this is when phone is turned on, then when I switch device off and proceed to download mode (power + home + vol+), Odin doesn't detect the phone. I do have Kies and drivers installed, anyone can think of what might be wrong?
EDIT:
Also when I press power + home + vol- combo, Odin doesn't detect device either.
when your phone is off, try power button + vol+ + home button.

Hmm, thanks for the hint but "Forced upload" doesn't work either.
make sure kies isn't running, check the processes to make sure, then open odin and try. A few attempts at recognition might be needed and is not uncommon

Just as you said, I checked running processes and Kies is not running. Device still isn't recognised by Odin.
Also I have't said that before but when I said that phone is detected by Odin when turned on, is when I set USB to Modem by calling *#7284#, otherwise when I set it to PDA, Odin doesn't even detect the device when turned on, neither when off.
Could it be because of my old computer operating system? (Windows XP Professional SP 3 32Bit)

Is there any other Firmware flashing solution for Galaxy 3 or just Odin?

No luck with odin.

Okay im running windows xp, and i have all those drivers installed...
http://www.userdrivers.com/PDA-Mobil...dows-XP-Vista/
and http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
so what am i missing to get my vibrant to be recognised by odin in download mode????
What are you running currently?
simply honey 3.6..... gingerbread
By chance did you forget to enable usb debugging?
idk, i flashed from a 2.2.1 rom to simply honey 3.6 through rom manager, but i did have it enabled through before i flashed for sure.... And usb debugging is not required for download mode as (i think) thats a whole different thing???
It needs to be enabled to use Odin. Also, sometimes for Odin to see my phone I have to unplug my phone and open Odin a few times before I finally get Odin to see my phone. It's very finicky for me, always has been

Go into windows device manager. Make sure that your computer is even seeing the device and that it has recognized the drivers for it. If it recognizes it, try rebooting computer then restart the process. Also make sure your phone is actually in DOWNLOAD mode. Not Recovery mode.
If you do not know the difference between the two, let us now and we'll assist further.
Happy hacking!
I use to always have trouble with Odin..then one day someone mentioned they always right clicked on Odin and chose "run as Administrator", I have never done that because I figured I was the administrator....but once I did it, never had a problem since.
Another problem I run into (well not anymore) is the USB port I plugged into. If I was on a hub or something it wouldn't work. If I plug right into my computer it works properly.
I also use adb commands to get into download and recovery when I'm Odin'ing. It also let's me know if my phone is detected by the OS.
#adb devices (should show your phone listed)
#adb reboot download (reboots your phone into download mode)
#adb reboot recovery (reboots your phone into recovery mode)
You'll need the SDK installed for adb to work.
Since I started doing these things, I have had ZERO problems with Odin and flashing my phone.
ay.. usb debuging was enabled before i flashed... now if my turn turns on it goee onto a bootloop... so everytime i cinnect my phone to the computer it says device not recognised. ohh and one thing to mention is that my computer doesnt have a highspeed usb port
Three button to download mode - power+vol up+vol down and see if you can get it into download mode then plug in usb (1.0 should work), then run odin...
otherwise i think you're looking at trying to make one of those jigs or replacing your phone...
try
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
Afaik the three button combo is for
Recovery mode. Follow the above directions up to the power button part. While holding both volume buttons, it should go directly into download mode when the usb us plugged in
Try removing all drivers then reinstall if xp doesn't pick it up
Beware of angry gingerbread man
power off phone
pull out battery
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
Install samsung kies mini. It gives you the correct drivers. I once installed those and it messed it up. So install kies mini.

I have ODIN and the file, but I cannot get my phone to be recognized on either computer I have when I open ODIN. I've tried to update the drivers, etc and nothing. All it does when I plug in my phone is charge. I dont see the option to change the MTP either.
Just need some help. Im not a newb, but im stuck and have spent a couple hours trying to figure out where to go.

You have to put your phone in download mode to use odin. Power off your phone, then while holding down volume press and hold power until it boots into the download mode menu. Select volume up to enter download mode. Now connect your phone to the computer and odin should recognize it.

Thanks... But I've tried this. And while I am in download mode, when I open up ODIN, it screen never goes green. So I know it doesnt recognize the phone. I've tried to close and reopen the app and unplug and replug the phone, which usually solves this issue to no avail. Its like it doesn't recognize the phone at all... Which I used the same computer to root the phone in the first place, so totally weird to me.
Make sure that you are using the latest version of Odin (3.09?) and running it as an administrator. If you have Kies installed, uninstall it. If all that fails, uninstall and reinstall the Samsung drivers. Should fix the problem.
And you are just trying install the MK2 modem correct?

[Help] No Recovery, Boot loop, and not recognized by Odin

Seems I've hit the jackpot, my phone's a potato. I had just installed king of nougat v9 and it worked fine until I rebooted into recovery by holding the power button and selecting recovery. At first it was in a boot loop and wouldn't open recovery or get recognized by odin, I read somewhere here to disconnect the battery so I opened the back cover and disconnected it which apparently ****ed the phone a step further now it's dead unless it's connected to a power source and after disconnecting it stays on samsung logo/download mode for a bit then dies.
On my old rom it was working fine except for the fact that I couldn't connect the phone to pc as storage, and it couldn't recognize usb devices I plugged in using the adapter. I took the phone to a repair shop and they said they replaced the micro usb assembly and it still didn't show up on odin, then a few days later they said it's a problem with the power IC and they replaced that then the guy said it worked once on odin then stopped again.
Idk what to do lol, phone's bricked or should I try a different repair shop incase these were idiots.
note: it says device descriptor request failed when connected to pc
Have you tried to reboot to the bootloader by holding down the power button, home button and volume down when your phone is at the android logo?

Then it means you must install Samsung drivers, so that the computer would recognize your phone. Try downloading smart switch or kies and that should also install the drivers.

"device descriptor request failed when connected to pc" sounds like a windows problem not android. You can check in the "computer management" device manager to see if the phone is recognized. I am going to assume not.
Try this link for possible solutions. https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledg...ice-descriptor-request-failed-for-windows-10/
